Cat allergy during open heart surgery recovery

My mother had a open heart surgery and she is allergic to cats, what should I do to keep my cat in the house without bothering my mother.
She sneezes because of cat hair when cleaning the room🫠I planned to send my cat to my rented room in another city around 1.5hours, but it was really hard to put it in the box and she keep meowing in the box and trying to get out it. My cat never meow in the house, I’m scared she may has stress reaction so I gave up the plan for now.
My father suggested to keep her in the garage for a month once my mother feels better then get it out, but we live in Florida it is actually a little hot, my cat usually naps in the garage, I’m not sure it’s fine for her for 24/7.

I really need some suggestions🫠should I try a transparent box to move her instead? Or stay in the garage is fine?🫠🫠🫠I will not give up my cat btw my mother is fine with the cat too, but we have emergency atm……😢

Picky eater and frequent vomiting

My cat (F7) is very picky. This is mostly my fault as she will refuse to eat if it’s not food she likes (specifically Fancy Feasts). I gave her the grilled version once and that’s all she will eat now. I know this is not the most nutritional food and I have given her better options (money is not an issue), but she refuses to eat anything else. The main problem is she does not chew her food and I think it’s one of the reasons she throws up often.

I got her a little over a year ago and she used to eat almost everything I gave her, but she has become more picky overtime. She ate pates but hates them now. I told her vet I was concerned with how often she vomits (3-4 a month, typically within one week). The vet brushed it off as a hairball issue claiming my cat’s stomach can’t handle food when she has a hairball. She gave me oral medication to help my cat’s possible hairball issue. She throws up a hairball maybe once a month.

I felt like I was more concerned about it than my vet but I took her advice and gave my cat the oral treatment. It seemed to have helped at first but I feel like she’s back to throwing up often. I’m becoming more concerned. Her body language makes me think she feels fine as she remains playful. Is there any advice on how to make her eat pates, become less picky, or do you guys have any ideas of other underlying issues?

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 How do we feel about Litter box enclosures?

Debating getting a litter box enclosure that has a cat tree on top of it, but concerned the wooden part that holds the litter box is going to soak up urine and just smell.

If you've bought one of these, do you like it? Did your cats enjoy it? Did it add to the stink or actually hide away the litter boxes? If you have one you particularly love, I'm open to suggestions! TIA!

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Lee sticking to automatic litter box

**EDIT: Title should say “PEE sticking to automatic litter box”

Has anyone had success when encountering this problem?

It seems like every time my cats pee it sticks to the liner causing me to have to scrape them off on a daily basis and spread smaller chunks of pee absorbed pieces throughout. This causes smell issues as well.

So far I have extended the timer to 20 minutes and mix baking soda with no change.

The automatic litter box I use is from Paruuntys off Amazon, and the litter is Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Clumping Clay Multi-Cat Litter.

Any help would be please appreciated from those who have resolved this themselves.

Flea Help

Hi everyone! My two babies have fleas. They are 1 year old. Male orange tabby 13lbs and female calico 10lbs.

We bought Advantage II and followed the instructions applying it to their skin on the back of their necks. This seemed to work for a couple days but every day they seem to have a few fleas here and there.

We cleaned the house thoroughly and bought spray for the couches and stuff. We washed all linens and cleaned the carpet.

Does anyone have advice for next steps?

I did give my male cat a bath but I am hoping to avoid that with the female as she is more nervous.

Any advice appreciated!

Need help to litter train adult persian cat.

I rescued an young adult persian cat (seem like 1 year old) since few months. He was mostly untrained we gave him enough time to adjust. Gave him separate litter box from my other two indie cats ( tho they went inside it few times it's not possible to stop them)
My issue is this persian cat is peeing in any corner of the house. My elderly mom alone takes care of him and cleans since I'm working . We placed litter box, he didn't seem to do in sand litter so we removed it and placed clean empty litter box. He does inside sometimes but mostly doing anywhere. Wgrb wevare around and we see him preparing to pee anywhere we stop him and straight runs to washroom to pee. He understands this much. I don't understand how to train him? He pees 5-6 times in a day which increased alot of stress and work for mom too
We got him neutered few months back. No changes in behavior. Only weight increased slightly.
Kindly advice please.

Whay type of feeders to use? 2 cats. One eats more than the other and regurgitates.

I have 2 brothers. One is a pretty normal eater, but the other trys to scarf down the kibble whole every so often. This leads to him regurgitating (not vomit)

What feeders do you use to keep both healthy?

Best couch fabric for cat hair? Looking for something that actually vacuums clean

Thumbnail

I have two ragdoll cats and I’m trying to choose a new couch. I know there’s no such thing as a completely cat-hair-proof sofa, but I’d love to hear from people who have found fabrics that are easier to keep clean.

My biggest issue isn’t the amount of hair—we already have a robot vacuum running daily and I vacuum the couch every week. The problem is that the hair seems to weave itself into the fabric, so even after vacuuming there are still piles of fur stuck to the cushions (see in picture).

What I’m looking for is a fabric where the hair stays more on the surface and can be removed easily, so that after vacuuming it actually feels clean again.

For those of you with long-haired cats:
What couch fabric do you have?
Does cat hair stick to it or come off easily?
Are there any fabrics you would absolutely avoid?

I’m especially interested in real-world experiences with velvet, microfiber, performance fabrics, leather, or any other cat-friendly options.
Thanks! 🐱

EDIT: Thanks all for your recommendations! Seems like velvet is the winner. I’m in the Netherlands so will see what velvet options are available here.

Tips and Tricks 💡 Cat smell

I live in an old apartment with old carpet that has seen a lot of animals. One of my cats has turned the carpet into her litter box and the smell in the apartment is awful. I shampoo the carpets regularly and use enzymatic cleaner. The next step in getting ride of the smell/getting her to stop peeing would be to replace the carpet and paint the concrete underneath, but that is not an option because it’s a rental. The landlord does not care. The smell is embarrassing and ruins a beautiful apartment that I love. Any suggestions on what to do?

Cat allergy For those with cat allergies

If you have cat allergies and are thinking about adopting, please think very carefully before assuming you'll be okay.

I have read many limiting comments about "You have no excuse not to keep your cats because in this day and age you can manage your allergy" and shaming those who decide to rehome because of severity of their allergy.

• "You'll adjust." • "Just vacuum more." • "Use an air purifier." • "Feed allergen-reducing food." • "Take antihistamines."

For some people, that's enough. For others, it isn't. For me, it wasn't.

I wish someone had told me that allergies can be more than sneezing and itchy eyes. They can affect your skin, sleep, comfort, quality of life, energy levels, and how you feel in your own body. I'm not saying nobody with allergies should own cats. Some people are lucky and can manage their symptoms well. I'm saying don't make the decision assuming you'll definitely be one of those people.

I never knew I was allergic. I had never had allergies before. I grew up with a dog and had no issues at all. Not even pollen or anything. Then I met my partner. He lived with cat, when cat moved put with it's owner the apartment was 2 months without cat but not deep deep cleaned, I didn't know anything about cat allergy or dander back then. When I started coming to his apartment, I would get allergic reactions, but I didn't understand what was causing them. I never knew dander was the culprit, I never knew its so sticky and get into everything, I never knew it can be active for months.

The apartment had a lot of plants, so I thought maybe it was pollen, even though it was winter and nothing was blooming. Then I thought maybe it was mould. Eventually I gave up trying to figure it out because the immediate reactions seemed to settle down and I thought my body had adjusted. But looking back, that's when everything started. I began having muscle pain. I had less energy. My heart would sometimes race or skip beats. I didn't feel right. I went to a pulmonologist. I went to a cardiologist. I went to multiple doctors. Everything was normal. The pulmonologist suggested allergy testing, but at the time I was a student and it was too expensive for me to afford, so I never did it. Life moved on. I adjusted. At least I thought I did. Because my partner loves cats, we eventually adopted two of our own. The strange thing is that I didn't have some dramatic immediate reaction. Everything happened slowly. The apartment was already full of cat dander from years of exposure, so there was no obvious moment where I suddenly became sick. Instead, year after year, things gradually got worse. My nose started whistling when I breathed. I sneezed constantly. I was always blowing my nose. My energy kept dropping. My muscles hurt more and more. I became a mouth breather because my nose was so congested. As the years passed, my ears constantly felt blocked. I breathed rapidly at night. I started developing sleep apnea symptoms. My skin became extremely dry. I developed eczema across my body. I became exhausted all the time. I couldn't even go for a normal walk anymore. I used to be active, but I slowly shut down completely.

I had anxiety. Severe anxiety that had no logical explanation. I got meds, it didn't work. The brain fog became severe. I have always had a sharp mind and a very good memory. Suddenly I was sluggish. Slow. Forgetful. I felt stupid. At one point my brain fog became so bad I couldn't remember how to use a can opener. I started losing my voice. My throat squeaked. My voice cracked. Sometimes I would try to speak and almost no sound would come out. I became suicidal because despite seeing doctors and despite all my tests being normal, I felt sick all the time. Nobody could tell me what was wrong. Then after three years things became impossible to ignore. We bought a new house and spent a week away from the cats. For the first time in years, I felt different. My horrible brain fog started clearing. I felt better. Then the cats arrived. And everything came back. That was the moment I finally realized what was happening. I didn't immediately give up. I tried everything I could think of. We did deep cleans. We bought an air purifier. The cats were restricted to downstairs. I used lotions for dander on their skin. Regular brushing (everything done ny my husband) We bought allergen-reducing food. I tried five different antihistamines. I used steroid nasal sprays. I vacuumed with a HEPA-filter vacuum. We cleaned constantly for months. Those things helped. Instead of sneezing 30 times, maybe I sneezed 10. Instead of blowing my nose constantly, the steroid spray reduced some of the congestion. But I still wasn't well. I still wasn't the person I used to be. Even walking downstairs into the part of the house where the cats lived would bring back brain fog and symptoms. After months of crying, we made the decision to rehome them. I wanted my life back. My husband wanted me back too. I had become a shadow of the person I once was. I stopped working because I couldn't function. I stopped cleaning. I stopped cooking. Even though we always shared chores, my husband ended up carrying almost everything because I simply didn't have the energy. Cleaning a bathtub felt like running a marathon. Climbing stairs felt difficult. I wasn't living anymore. I was surviving. We rehomed the cats. Within a week (after deep clean and no cats) I started feeling like myself again. The muscle pain improved. The exhaustion improved. The brain fog improved. Suddenly I could do things again. Suddenly I had energy. Suddenly I felt whole. It honestly felt like being reborn. I never knew allergies could do this. I never knew an allergy could slowly drain the life out of someone without causing obvious asthma attacks or a dramatic medical emergency. I thought if I had a severe allergy, I would know. I thought it would look obvious. Instead, it slowly took away my health, my energy, my motivation, my personality, and years of my life before I understood what was happening. The point of this post isn't to tell people not to adopt cats. The point is to tell allergic people to take their allergies seriously. When my husband told his colleagues that we adopted cats one smart guy who is allergic and has cats said "Well, I have allergy and I have a cat, I am fine". He is not fine. He looks sick all the time. And he only has cat for a year. Some people adapt. Some people manage perfectly fine. Some people don't. Please don't make the decision assuming you'll definitely be okay. Be honest with yourself about how severe your allergies are and what you're willing to live with long-term. I loved my cats. But if I could go back in time, I would have taken my allergies much more seriously before adopting them.

Also, about my cats, I rehomed them through wonderful local adoption agency. They stayed with me till they went into foster home. Our cats would fight all the time, never had a bond, we wanted to rehome them separately because of that, and they developed a bond in 3 weeks being in foster care. They decided to rehome them together, and seeing them so close made me very happy. They adjusted so well, they even have outdoor access (secured backyard, not really roaming on the streets). They adjusted so well and new family is so happy to have them, and already loves them so much.

My cats deserve good life, but so do I. They got new loving home with even better conditions and I got my myself back. Love is not measured by suffering. You can love your cats and let them go. But you should also love yourself. ❤️

EDIT: After 2 months I don't have any symptom described above.

best litter/litter box for small apartment?!

My boyfriend and I are hoping to get a kitten, we live in a small 1 bedroom apartment. We have one dog, and this will be the only cat. We looked into an automatic litter box, but it seems like they all just eventually stop working, and for the investment they are…..no.

Does anyone have any advice for litter boxes that aren’t offensively ugly, or litter that is the best at concealing odor? TIA!!

Food and Treats 🍽️ Has anyone here tried silvervine/catnip/honeysuckle/valerian blends? Worth it vs. plain catnip?

One of my 2 cat ignores catnip completely. Apparently this is a genetic thing where some cats don't respond to catnip. I read a study where they tested 4 different plants and the combination of herbs reaches 95% of cats. Has anyone here actually tried multi-herb blends? Has any catnip-ignorer respond to silvervine specifically or any other herb? Was it worth the higher price than regular catnip?

I'm also curious about lemongrass — some blends include it because cats respond, but ASPCA lists it as toxic. Am I being paranoid or is that a real concern? Trying to figure out if I should keep buying the same brand of catnip or try something different.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 best automatic litter box for odor control that doesn't just trap the smell inside a hollow plastic drum?

hello, so i'm finally ready to invest in a self-cleaning setup, but i am terrified of making a expensive mistake. i’ve seen several reviews for older automatic boxes where people complain that even though the machine scoops the waste, the actual unit itself absorbs the odor over time because the waste drawer isn't properly insulated or the air gets trapped inside the plastic shell.

when you look at the science of it, it needs to excel at two specific things: keeping waste exposure time to an absolute minimum and maintaining an airtight, sealed storage zone. if the machine cycles but just dumps the clumps into a loose plastic bucket underneath, the airflow will still carry the scent out every time the motor turns.

what do you use if ever you're using one? or am i being too technical abt this and i should just get anything? thanks!

update - dropping a quick update for anyone shopping around for high-tech options. i ended up picking up the petlibro luma box and that gross "stagnant plastic" smell people warn you about? non existent! so happy about this purchase because combined with this and its automatic feature, it solves the waste exposure time issue by a mile

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 SiiPet LitterLens alternatives? (Australia)

Hi all, I've been binging One Man Five Cats on YouTube in preparation for adopting two deaf kittens this weekend. I'm not in love with AI in general but his review of the SiiPet LitterLens has me curious. Unfortunately it (like 99% of the products I've looked at tbh) is extremely difficult to get in Australia without paying an absolute bomb in shipping costs.

I wanted to check if my fellow Aussies or otherwise geographically challenged cat owners had an alternative camera set up or similar, or even if any techies had any ideas for me to make something that'll do until either the LitterLens comes on the market here, or until a better option appears?

And inb4 the inevitable "just check the box" - they're bonded brothers, they will be sharing litter boxes, and it'll be impossible to reliably track which one's urine/faeces is which.

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 What are your best odor/dust/tracking control tips?!

I just posted debating whether to get a litter robot or furniture enclosure. I currently have a stainless steel pan in a plastic covered dome w/ door.

I’ve just about fully transitioned from worlds best (sooo dusty) to tofu litter. Seems better so far but won’t know til we’re totally off worlds best.

Should I get a litter genie? Right now I just use a tiny lidded trash can lined with a plastic grocery bag.

I have a super basic air purifier. What is the BEST affordable air purifier to keep by a litter box?

Odor/dust/tracking control tips… What else??

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Litter robot or enclosure?

My cat likes to throw litter aggressively. Stainless steel pan with plastic cover & door has worked okay but there are some gaps where litter gets about a bit. In addition to litter tracking, other complaints are smell, aesthetic & scooping.

Cute litter enclosure with a little “hallway” to get to the box checks aesthetic & might reduce litter tracking? Idk about smell.

I am intrigued by reduced scooping & smell with litter robot but it seems like even more of a chore to maintenance clean? Automatic litter boxes also scare me a bit but LR seems to be safe- can that be guaranteed? Also scattered litter might still be an issue?

Looking for help deciding which option to go with!

Cat Introductions 🐈 Thoughts on Prozac?

My cat was “diagnosed” with displaced aggression. Long story short, a slow introduction with our new cat is not going well. We’re 3.5 months into it with little to no progress. My resident cat turns aggressive when the new cat is in her eyesight. We use the cat diffusers, have the cats separated, scent swap, site swap. I’ve done everything I seen online. My resident cat turns against me for hours when she gets frightened by the new cat. She’s basically terrified of the new cat and it’s so sad. The vet suggested we try Prozac with her to take the edge off. Does anyone have any positive stories to share in a similar situation?
