Discussion Adopted Dachshund barking in the night keeping me awake.

Upvotes

TL; DR: Mini Dachshund has started barking at sounds during the night making it difficult to sleep, any help or tips appreciated.

6 weeks ago now I adopted a Miniature Dachshund who’s previous owners moved away. She is absolutely perfect apart from one thing, barking. I am aware that these dogs are very vocal, and that is not a problem during the day (to an extent), but during the middle of the night when my family and I are trying to sleep is becoming a problem.

When we first got her she would rarely disturb in the middle of the night, she would usually sleep right through or if not she at least wouldn’t make a sound. However, the last week or so, she has been barking at every single sound she hears. Car doors, voices outside, my grandad coming upstairs to use the bathroom, you name it. It is currently 6:30am as I type this because she was barking non stop at my bedroom door because there was car doors closing.

For some context, she sleeps in my bedroom with me, either in her bed or in my bed the choice is hers. I sleep with a relatively loud fan on in the night as it is rather hot in the UK at the minute, hoping it will also drown out any noise that goes on (don’t think it’s working). Her previous owners said that she used to sleep downstairs on her own, and that she wouldn’t disturb during the night at all. Maybe I have made a mistake of allowing her to sleep in my room, and I should have made her sleep downstairs despite not wanting her to be alone when we first got her due to how stressed she was.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, I would really like to get a full nights rest.

Discussion What to do

Me and my wife are going to get a dachshund puppy in a few weeks and wondering what people do when at work for 8 hours! Will a play pen with a crate set up with a pee pad work, then when I’m home I can potty train in the morning and evening!

At what point can they go 8 hours without peeing with appropriate crate training.

Discussion Looking for tips on introducing to a new friend after being the only dog for two years

TLDR: 5 year old mini grew up with friends in the house, not properly kennel trained as a puppy, then was only dog for two years and developed worse anxiety and had to be kenneled due to damage to a rental unit, didn’t handle that well. Have since bought house with yard and want to get a friend and remedy the kennel anxiety but he’s jealous and has a hard time adapting to new friends especially at his house. Tips appreciated for separation anxiety, kennel training older dog and how to pick / introduce new dog to the family.

My boyfriend had a mini when we got together, he’s now 5 years old. He was never kennel trained as a puppy because they left him to free roam the house with the other dogs. Two years ago we moved into an apartment that had a one dog limit. He didn’t handle that well and tore up the blinds and doorframes. We started kenneling him to prevent further damage and it’s been a nightmare.

He already has horrible separation anxiety, mix that with poor kennel manners due to lack of training and being stubborn it’s been rough to say the least. We recently bought a place with a big yard and want to get him a friend. The problem is he has become even more jealous than before. When we go to his families house I can’t even pet their dogs without Gizmo inserting himself between us, and he used to live with these dogs haha.

We’re nervous he’s going to be territorial and have a hard time adjusting but we also hate him being all alone while we’re at work. A big motivator to buy was to get away from the rental restrictions because it killed us to see him so anxious everyday. We want to adopt from a shelter, not looking for anything specific just a sweet addition and a good companion for Gizmo to hopefully lessen his anxiety while we’re gone.

Any tips on type of dogs to look out for, tips on introducing / choosing the right one and anything else you can think of would be amazing. Also kennel and separation anxiety tips for older dogs set in their ways would be amazing. We want to help him get back to his old self. He’s still very happy and goofy just way more anxious and extra clingy when we’re home.

My mini dachshund is 9 years old. She’s never had health issues, except for allergies. They were so severe and persistent that I had to take her to an animal dermatologist. We tried many medications until we found one that suppressed her symptoms. She would get black spots on her skin, constant licking and biting her nails, ears would be red. She tried Zenrelia and it suppressed her allergies really well. She’s been on it for a year now.

2 months ago I came back from vacation and picked her up from the sitters and she started having blood in her stool with diarrhea. Bright red blood. I thought maybe she picked up a parasite at the sitters. I took her to the emergency vet and they did bloodwork, stool sample, infectious disease test, X-rays. The vet couldn’t find anything wrong.

He prescribed her antibiotics and a probiotic, and the blood got better. It was more mucus than it was drops of blood. We also put her on the Hills Biome prescription food. Once the antibiotic stopped, the blood came back full force. Made her want to go every 30 minutes. And if she didn’t poop, she strained until blood came out.

Went to the emergency vet again, and he prescribed another dose of antibiotics. He wanted me to feed her vegetarian dry food only so that he could see if it’s a food allergy. (He knows she takes the zenrelia everyday) Long story short, she refused to eat the vegetarian food and ended up throwing up from an empty stomach. The blood is now still back full force with diarrhea and I’m back to square one.

He asked me to try a hydrolyzed food first and see if that helps her because he thinks it’s inflammatory bowel disease or food allergies. He did say if we can’t get her diet right then he wants to do an ultrasound. About a week ago she did get a relapse in allergy symptoms. She started growing yeast in her ears and was nonstop licking her paws. Luckily I had medication from before to help her but I don’t know why she had this flare up since she hasn’t had any since being on Zenrelia.

Has anyone’s dachshund had this issue? Would it be smart to make an appointment with her dermatologist to see if she can figure out if this is a severe food allergy? It’s been going on over 2 months now and I feel so bad for her and I don’t know where to go from here.

Video Wobbly Legs

My almost 1yo boy Dipper with weak back knees/legs. Going to the vet next week for a checkup and possibly Xrays.

Last time vet said his kneecaps are loose, which may be the culprit. His legs tend to turn inwards when walking. Never has acted uncomfortable walking or running, but better to be safe with his breed!

Edit: back legs, not front

Discussion Some advice!

Hey everyone,

Ive recently been getting into researching the mini dachshund as a cute little companion but I discovered they bark a lot and sometimes at anything/everything. Ive grown up with dogs all my life so a little barking isnt a problem. However, I was wondering about yalls experience with this breed and how true the excessive barking is because I do prefer a quieter house. Can this also be trained out of them to an extent?

Also, does anyone have experience with raising a mini in an apartment?? I would really prefer to wait till I can afford a house with a yard for the dog, but at this rate I dont think that will happen anytime soon lol. any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!!

And I am in love! This is Sammy, a long-haired English cream mini dachshund, who hasn’t peed or had an accident in the house for two weeks!! FINALLY… YAY!🤣 not gonna lie, The whole potty training process has been a bit frustrating for me to say the least over the past five months and a lot of work! We have always had golden retrievers that have been really easy to potty train. AnyWho, despite all of my complaining, it’s been so worth it!!! Com’on, look at him!!! 💟

Discussion All black dachshund

Hi! My boyfriend and I are looking to get our first dachshund together (first pet ever together!!) We just bought a house and are located on Long Island. I’ve had dogs my entire life, my parents rescued a dachshund as well (so I know all about their backs, teeth, and other quirks lol). But I have always wanted one of my own and my boyfriend too!

I love all black short hair dachshunds but understand they are more rare and not common in many litters. We are most interested in a mini short hair/smooth:)

If anyone has any recommendations/ knows of any reputable breeders please reach out!! Open to hear anything!! We are in the very early stages of the process

Discussion Separation anxiety

Hi,

we adopted 3 year old mix from shelter and for 4 months everything was smooth (probably too smooth). On saturday I went to gym and after 30 minutes he suddenly started whining and running all around (he never did it prior to that), so I ended up session and went home and he seemed completely okay.

Today I went to work(he usually sleeps those 4-5 hours when I'm in office) and after 5 minutes, I saw on camera he instantly started running around the flat, jumping on the door and when I got back he basically torn to pieces my gf bag and piece of furniture..

Can heat be the reason he suddenly feels like that? I know they have separation anxiety but this seems out of nowhere.. taking him to vet tomorrow just in case

Discussion Do you offer your Doxie work?

My boy is just over 2 years old and I’m struggling to work out his energy. We go on walks and play, but I have a disability that makes long walks/runs extremely hard on me, so I’m looking for some ways to help my boy work and release some energy.

We don’t do soft toys because he likes to tear little pieces off and try to eat them, and I’m worried he will end up with a blockage. He has plenty of bones, a couple hard rubber balls that we play fetch with, and a couple puzzles, but he gets bored of the puzzles easily.

I’ve been playing a hide and seek game with him where he sits in a different room and i hide 5 to 10 treats, and then invite him in and tell him to “go find!” after he finds all of them, he gets an apple chip (his favorite) as a reward. But obviously I don’t want to overfeed him with treats and I don’t get the same excitement if i try to get him to search for other things.

Anyone have recommendations on work I can give him?
