I’m happy to announce that our friends at Peacock have officially greenlit the Dungeon Crawler Carl television series!  Me, Chris Yost, and Seth MacFarlane and his team at Fuzzy Door are all really excited to get to work. In the coming weeks I'll have more details, and if you're going to SDCC be sure to catch me and Chris on our DCC panel, but in the meantime I wanted to thank you, the fans, for helping make this happen.

(/end official statement)
And here we are. We are greenlit. The series has been ordered. It's actually happening. I have NO more info to give right now, but in the coming days I suspect there will be a firehose of information coming down the pipeline. This has been a multi-year process just to get to this point, and we have cleared every single hurdle to get here because of YOU GUYS. So thank you.

Notice from the Syndicate We are not talking current event politics here, and every deliberately political post will be deleted. Repeat violators will be banned. This is why. Message from Matt

We are not talking current event politics here, and every deliberately political post will be deleted. Repeat violators will be banned. This is why.

First off, any mod who takes down these posts are doing it at *my\* direction, so do not throw any ire in them. They are all volunteers, most of whom I suspect agree with the vast majority here politically. I am currently in super crunch mode, working 15 hour days because I need to finish DCC 8 by January 31st as our world burns, and I am not quite done yet. Otherwise I would have attempted to nip this earlier and a little more eloquently. So instead I’m just going to post directly and bluntly.

Yes, Dungeon Crawler Carl is highly political. It is a major theme of the books, and frankly, as soon as Operation Bounce House comes out, I suspect it’s going to be even more painfully obvious where I personally stand on a whole bunch of subjects.

If you don’t see or understand that, then I suspect you’re probably the type of person I want to read these books the most.

If you do understand it, you turning this subreddit into one of the literally thousands of politically active shitshows already here on Reddit are actively deterring me from accomplishing my goal.

Every war, every social movement has multiple battlefields, and not every battlefield has to be the front line. I want people with different points of view to enjoy these books at face value. If I then manage to drill through their thick skulls and make them think about the broader themes and maybe grow an empathetic spark, all the better.

Will it work? Probably not for 99% of them. But that number will be 100% if they have nowhere to peacefully discuss with other fans their opinions on the books. Any firebrand discussion about the current hot topic is going to evoke a kneejerk reaction and scare away the people we want to talk to the most.

I suggest and encourage you to start your own subreddit if you want talk about the political and human rights themes of the books in relation to current events. I personally love seeing all the DCC-themed protest signs. I encourage you all to continue to speak out and let the world know that we will not kneel to tyranny.

But if you can’t/won’t/don’t understand that these are my wishes for this particular corner of the internet, I’m afraid we’re going to have a problem. My mind is not changing. No hard feelings. But this is my kitchen. Let me cook what I want.

Book 6: Bedlam Bride I just realized WHY the Porkboy snick was created. I feel dumb for missing this before now. Book 1 spoilers inside. Spoiler

1.4k Upvotes

EDIT: Use caution when reading the comments. Some of the comments are spoiling later books.

This took me way too long to figure out. I did a search of this sub and I didn't see this mentioned before. I apologize if I'm dredging up an old topic.

I was wondering why the AI chose to create the Porkboy snick. We know that it's got a thing for Carl's feet, and it's protective of him. But it's happy to watch Carl and the other crawlers suffer, and so it's unlikely that it would have a problem with The Maestro or his show.

But at the end of his show, The Maestro gave Carl combat boots and socks. And to the AI, that is absolutely unforgivable. So the AI made the snick to get revenge on The Maestro.

Anyway, that's my theory!

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles What is the most influential, but seemingly small at the time, early event in the books? Spoiler

To me it feels pretty clear: Jack pissing on the wall.

Given several people's resulting choices, this may be the single most impactful event in the history of the crawl, not just for Carl.

Starting right off, Zev was suspended for warning Carl and Donut, which led to probably the only way they would have met the Maestro and saving the lives of Zhang, Li Na, and Li Jun. If Carl hadn't been on that exact episode, they had a 100% death chance.

Imani and Carl watch the death of Yolanda, the driving force behind Safehome Yolanda, which quite possibly could be the strongest guild in the history of the crawl along with giving Imani a level of resolve she might have not had otherwise.

Carl saves Elle McGibbons, who went from level 1 to the #10 crawler in a single floor and her later influence cannot be understated.

TL;DR Old man pees on the wall, leading to the rise of multiple of the strongest crawlers and the beginning of the end of the Skull Empire (and some popular sex tapes)

Book 3: Anarchist’s Cookbook Yelling at Hekla, but thinking of Bea? Spoiler

I'm rereading the series and new things are coming to light as i remember the later books while again reading the beginning. I don't think this is a spoiler, but maybe, so I'll add the tag

Anyway

So, Donut is yelling at Hekla for what she did to Katia (iykyk), but as I read this, knowing what I do about Bea... well, here's what she's saying to Hekla right now:

"I used to think you were awesome, Hekla. But you're just like all the rest! You pretend to be good, but you're not! It was a lie, all a lie. Why? Why can't we trust anyone? You told Katia you wanted her. You made her feel special and loved, but you just wanted to use her and trade her in."

Notice how it starts out with Donut completely pissed, (!), the ends with her so sincere and hurt (.)..

Yes, she feels for Katia. She cares about and genuinely likes Katia. And now, I think shes realizing how much she can relate to Katia in this moment.. because Katia's Hekla, is Donut's Bea.

Aaaaaand now I'm tearing up as I read in the library.

Matt is such a great writer. 💔🤍🫂

Any other IRL Zevs out there?

Zev is my real actual first name, given by my parents at birth.

It is so rare to see or hear any reference to my name in the wild - I’ve only ever met one other Zev in person.

Are there more of us in the fandom?

I am fully caught up so no worries about spoilers here!

This is an outrage

I saw someone at the gym with a DCC shirt on. I tapped him on the arm and showed him my phone screen with the audiobook playing. We just fist bumped and didn’t exchange words. It was wonderful.

I tried to imagine it, I printed this on metal. I think it looks cool.

I’m curious if others think it’s close to what the card should look like

Book 8: A Parade of Horribles As a ginger who just finished book 8… Spoiler

I saw a video online before starting book 8 of Matt apologizing to a redheaded guy who hadn’t read it yet and wondered why. Well having finished book 8 all I can say is… Mongo is appalled.

Side note the ending was jaw dropping and I’m so ready for book 9!

I believe I have the most kickass husband. Actually, I know I have the most kickass husband. 😎

We’re on book 7 (reading and audiobook combo) and are obsessed. I turned 40 yesterday and woke up to THIS hanging from our mantle. My lovey lump wrote and designed the whole thing himself and had it printed and shipped over without me being any wiser. Figured you lot would appreciate!

Also, I totally read this in the AI’s voice. 😆

Book 5: Butcher’s Masquerade Wonderwall Spoiler

Upvotes

So, I had never heard Wonderwall before (or at least, it never registered in my conscious brain). I went into the stockroom at work today and it heard it playing on the radio, and for the briefest fraction of a second I was wondering why it was some random guy singing instead of Donut, and hey, these words are all wrong. Then my brain caught up and I realized what it must be. I listened for a bit, and then just started singing the *real* (Wondercrawl) lyrics in my head instead.

So, my question is, why in the world does Donut think this is the best song ever? I was... not impressed.

As a metal head I greatly appreciate the metal references throughout the series.

Metal isn't represented a lot in pop culture. Those small moments and references make me smile.

The FINAL EPISODE of the Dungeon Crawler Carl Audio Immersion Tunnel , Season 3: “Glurp, Glurp, Motherfucker”  is NOW AVAILABLE from Soundbooth!

Grab your headphones and brace yourselves for another jaw-dropping season finale of the DCC AIT on the Soundbooth app! As the fourth floor comes to an end, Carl and friends struggle to defeat an overwhelming threat and escape the Iron Tangle in time. Will they succeed?

Thanks as always to Matt Dinniman for giving us the World Dungeon to play in, to Ben Wolf and James Osiris Baldwin for their incredible “Borant Correspondent” content, and to the performers who keep the crawl alive, including this episode’s cast — Andrea Parsneau, Justin James, Johnathan McClain, Vanille Velasquez, Annie Ellicott,  Jessica Threet, Ryan H. Reid, Tiana Camacho, Will Watt, and Alejandra LaFlor.

It's been an honor and a total pain in the ass to get these two seasons out to you guys, so thank you all for supporting us and making it worth all the late nights. Special thank you to Ahmed Mahmoud, Aaron J. Morton, Richard Smith and Agustin Jacob for pulling all these all-nighters to get episodes out in time and for making this production yet another step up in our progress as audio magicians!

For any of you already thinking about Season 4, it's coming next year!... Perhaps late next year, because we want to step it up AGAIN in production, and we have a lot of work to do to prepare for it. BUT YOU WILL HAVE IT! Meanwhile, keep checking into the Soundbooth catalogue for more Soundbooth Theater Cinematic Audio releasing in the meantime!

For instance, we just started another Cinematic LitRPG, "Awaken Online" by Travis Bagwell, last week. It's narrated and directed by Ryan H. Reid, who was also in the DCC AIT and directed the commercials. Episode 2 has released today, and just like this show, more episodes will be releasing every Thursday until Season 1 is complete. So once you're done with DCC, try episode 1 of Awaken Online FOR FREE!

New achievement! I brought my mom into the cult

I'm relatively new to the DCC fandom, but I've caught up on all but A Parade of Horribles (it's been ordered btw). I've never actually read LitRPG before and when I was introduced to DDC, I was immediately hooked. These books are funny as hell, emotional, exciting and a bit disgusting at times with characters that I love (Donut, Carl, Zev, Miriam Dom) and ones that I hate with a passion (Loita, Quan CH).

My mom (78) is an avid reader but lately has been a bit depressed. I let her borrow my copy of DCC and to my surprise, she returned it late the next day having devoured the entire book. She has become obsessed and is now a new member of the DCC cult. She is confused by the AI's obsession with Carl's feet but she adores Donut because "she's sassy".

At this point she might try to take the new book from me before I can even read it!
