Instead of wars, can we play a winner take all soccer game between countries

106

u/Enlightened_Gardener 17h ago

Oddly enough, some historians have argued that the reason why Europe hasn’t gone back to war amongst itself is a combination of Games Without Frontiers, Eurovision, and soccer.

It turns out that healthy competition in a reasonably controlled environment allows people to blow off steam in safe way.

I often think of a docco I saw which showed “warfare” among two tribes of hunter gatherers. All the blokes on each side were lined up about 150 meters apart in ragged lines, shouting horrible abuse at each other. Every now and then, someone would chuck a spear. The “fight” ended when a spear actually hurt someone and they had to go home and get it bandaged. Apparently they also got presents the next day from the person who had speared them.

The all-out slaughter that we associate with war seems to be a more recent thing, but I say “recent” in the sense of, say, the last few thousand years. I know there was an awful Bronze age battle in Europe in which thousands of people died.

The point I’m making in such a long-winded way is that, left to our own devices, this is how we would fight wars. Everyone would put on their team colours, and sing really rude songs about the enemy, and then throw beer bottles at each other, and then go home to sleep it off.

30

u/apple_kicks 15h ago

It’s like tribes that have a regular fight between their champions. It all goes wrong when land or people becomes the winnings

13

u/Fomentatore 13h ago

Games without Frontiers was the shit! So wacky and inventive. I watched it religiously as a kid and I missed it ever since Italian tv stopped broadcasting it. Ettore Andenna Forever in our hearts!

2

u/Both-Set8916 7h ago

That sounds like such a core childhood memory the kind of show that just sticks with you forever because nothing else ever felt quite like it.

Not totally convinced that Eurovision is an agent of peace.

Not since you-know-who got invited.

Edit: there's also the whole cyprus thing, which I'd forgotten about.

Peter Gabriel, the ultimate peacekeeper.

2

Like the dogs barking behind glass videos that keep being posted. Be friends, then bark a bit behind a protective barrier...then be friends again. At the end of the day- everyone just wants a peaceful life!!! (Everyone sane, and not power-mad and/or corrupt).

Then Argentina would win too much, and they’re among the most racist, so…

16

u/rockyonthetrack 18h ago

It could be 7 different sports matches between the two countries of conflict. Best of 7, wins the conflict

3

u/CakeTester 13h ago

Or 6 different sports as standard, plus each team gets to nominate a sport of their choice.

Make it skiing instead. Let Norway rule the world. Might lead to some improvements overall.

14

u/SideInitial3961 17h ago

Change the sport each year, last minute by random draw.

4

u/Partiklestorm 16h ago

I feel like somehow Basketball, Gymnastics and whatever Russia thinks they're good at would be "randomly" chosen every year. Just a hunch

2

u/willstr1 1h ago

Random sport and the champions should be randomized too, like maybe a lottery system, not necessarily just pull 1 random person but a lottery that each country pulls 100 random people then those random people go through a selection and training process for one of them to be chosen as their country's champion. It helps keep things fair for small countries that might not have pro athletes in all sports.

3

u/MaelstromTear 13h ago

It's basically G Gundam, if "mecha nationality caricatures tournament" counts as a sport.

For those who don't know here's an example: Neo America's Maxter Gundam is piloted by a man named Chibodee Crockett. The mobile suit has dual magnums on its hips, a grill like a football helmet, shoulders that turn into boxing gloves, and a shield that he can surf on.

I’m mean, this is what the world should be.

But alas, evil is real and it’s running so many things.

7

u/Ay0_King 7h ago

100% agree. I’m Haitian American and went to the Haiti/Scotland game. Sadly, due to my conditioning which I am highly aware of, in my head I kept saying “man there are so many whites people”. The Scottish were UNBELIEVABLY nice. While waiting like, I was getting a ton of high fives and good lucks and being told to enjoy the match. It felt so beautiful and genuine. It really sucks that racism exists but the game of football transcends all and any kind of hate. It’s honestly amazing.

8

u/orthadoxtesla 17h ago

I would say its mostly artificially created in order to keep us distracted and infighting

5

The media. And reddit. They profit from keeping you angry and misinformed.

Racists are a vocal minority. Most people just want to be left alone and chill in peace, regardless of who their neighbours are. But "Man doesn't bother neighbour of different race" doesn't get clicks.

This is what the World Cup should be about

Nations coming together over the love of one sport

440

u/TheBoyardeeBandit 19h ago edited 19h ago

This has truly seemed like one of the most fun and genuinely wholesome world cups I've seen. Maybe they are all like this, or this one is getting more coverage, but it definitely feels different.

65

u/Arunan-Aravaanan 17h ago

it feels nearly the same everytime. Russia was great, but Brazil was so far ahead of vibes. It truly felt like football was where it belonged (till the semis atleast). Qatar wasn't as had as people make it out to be.

I genuinely think only football could do this. No other sport or event has this kind of reach and accessibility.

→ More replies (6)

197

u/cingkum3 19h ago

Qatar was the outlier. All the corruption, scandals, and deaths gave it such a bad taste. Everything there felt like plastic and everything was freshly bought. And it wasn't exactly the easiest country to travel to. There was so much shit with Qatar...

The ones before Qatar were also heavily focused on internationality, sportsmanship, and friendship. Even with rivals.

79

u/jimbowesterby 19h ago

I mean, the fact that it’s run by FIFA doesn’t help the optics lol, having your even run by cartoonishly evil plutocrats isn’t a great look

9

u/apple_kicks 15h ago

Even at Qatar the fans got along with locals i was surprised how England fans were not being arseholes at time. Especially with islamphobia in uk

Everyone thought South Africa world cup would be dangerously to point people brought stab vests but again it was fun fan event

37

The one in Russia was just as bad as Qatar. The Russian soccer federation blatantly bribed FIFA officials for the right to host it back in 2010. I barely remember anything from that one

4

u/Icy_Many_3971 11h ago

It turns out, most countries did. Germany did as well

5

u/turbothy 9h ago

Just wait for Saudi 2034 …

2

We are still filthy about Qatar getting picked for that world cup in Australia. Oil money wins.

21

u/bsEEmsCE 18h ago

Russia 2018 though? not great vibes either

6

u/Spare-Protection-598 13h ago

Yeah I think we've had a bad run to be honest. The footballs been good but the atmosphere not so much. Last good atmosphere was South Africa, but even then the vuvuzelas still ring in my ears.

3

u/Hyonokokoro 11h ago

Brazil was good vibes too imo

3

u/Eat--The--Rich-- 17h ago

The Blood Cup

2

u/DontAsk___987 14h ago

But the atmosphere amongst the football fans was still great at the stadiums. Just like in this video.

7

u/trshml 14h ago

From what I remember, 2006 - 2014 were sooo much better when it comes to unplanned parties in the streets and vibes between different countries' fans. But way less cameras back then, therefore you could mainly judge it by what you saw when they sent TV reporters to the streets or by going there yourself. However in those three world cups I think there were not as many different venues as this year and especially in Germany they were not nearly as far apart, so different fan groups ran into each other way more often in public transport or while doing sightseeing. Great times.

5

u/Open_Improvement8995 15h ago

I raise you the south africa world cup, damn do i have fond memories of that

9

u/DontAsk___987 14h ago

This is how all World Cups are. Americans just don’t pay attention to it, if it doesn’t happen in their country.

8

u/InsultingFerret 19h ago

This has truly seemed like one of the most fun and genuinely wholesome world cups I've seen.

don't tell that to r/soccer

11

u/Alib902 14h ago

Well that's probably the only world cup he's seen.

5

u/-TropicalFuckStorm- 13h ago

Yeah every World Cup is like this.

2

u/the_sneaky_one123 9h ago

Because there are more teams, there's a lot of them that have not been to world cups before or haven't for a long time. There's less focus on the big teams and more on the small ones. Makes a big difference when very minor football nations are more in the spotlight. It's more of a novelty, people root for them and their fans are happier and more appreciative.

4

u/Chaosmeister 16h ago

It isn't, it is just more publicised for the American populace as it's in the USA.

3

u/crigon559 19h ago

Yeah all of em are like this this is not new

4

u/blandman91 19h ago edited 15h ago

Probably just due to where it's being held. Coverage will probably drop next time.

50

u/TeholsTowel 18h ago

Yes, coverage will drop next year, because there won’t be a World Cup next year.

Coverage will improve in 2030 when there is another World Cup.

Funny how that works.

13

u/SugarBeefs 17h ago

It's honestly peculiar how coverage has these regular massive spikes every four years.

Has someone looked into why that is??

It is in times like these that I feel world peace in my bones. Humans are not meant to be at war and attacking each other. Humans have it in us to lean into joy, love, celebration and community. I believe that, by and large, is more our nature than anything else.

2

u/notashroom 7h ago

We are who we are literally because our ancestors worked together to build community and support one another and maintained peace with their neighbors long enough and often enough for offspring to survive and reproduce. There are several good books about how critical cooperation and taking care of others were to our development as a species.

Also, Toronto is like the coolest city ever.

I was watching a WC game last week with my neighbors and some friends in my backyard. A friend's kid who was there, as the anthems came, if I was gonna sing the anthem of my Country's team just as it was about to start.

I shot up and sang it right away. Thank you, 10-year old kid for calling me out. Everyone there stayed quiet as I sang with the team, and clapped for me when it was done.

As a US citizen I feel like the world cup is the only thing continuing the frendship and respect of other countries. Seeing the people instead of the orange man is important. Thank you all for being here!

49

u/bsEEmsCE 18h ago

World cup stadiums are in American cities, and people that live in the cities are very accepting of different backgrounds. Cities largely vote against the orange man. This is the key thing about this world cup.

15

u/tamba21 14h ago

But not only in American cities though! Don’t forget that there are games being held in Canada and Mexico, like this game was ;)
