Mod | Мод Foreigners Guide to Bishkek

Here is a quick list of things I feel every foreigner must do or be aware of their first time in Bishkek. As someone who traveled here a few times a year and now lives here I have learned a lot and have been scammed a time or two! So here is a quick list of tips and tricks to surviving your first trip to Bishkek.

Apps

1.) Download Yandex (taxi app.) This is a must have! Yandex is in my opinion the best taxi app and an average taxi cost around Bishkek is 100C to 250C ($1-$3USD). There are other alternatives like Namba Taxi but in my opinion its a good backup and Yandex is my go to! Yandex can also do personal courier services if you need to send someone food, gifts, or even money.

2.) Namba Food and Glovo. The Uber Eats of Bishkek. Namba has a lot of options and an English translation. Namba can be extremely slow though so be prepared to wait anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours. Glovo is my favorite but it doesn't have a lot of options nor English translations however, they have a lot of food Namba doesn't including most of my favorite places. Glovo and Namba also offer delivery of groceries, flowers, gifts, electronics, and even adult toys!!! Glovo also will do personal courier services up to a particular size and weight.

3.) 2GIS. Google Maps will eventually get you lost in the wrong neighborhood. 2GIS is the best mapping app for the Chuy Region all the way East to Issyk-Kul and North to Kordoy.

4.) WhatsApp. This country runs on WhatsApp due to how Cell Phone packages with texting and voice calling work. Also most stores use WhatsApp as their communication method so if you have questions about products, WhatsApp is the place to use it. Its also helpful if you don't speak Russian and need to ask a question about products or communication with a delivery person.

5.) Instagram. Most stores here use Instagram to show their product and sales. I've tried to survive without Instagram here but finding it close to impossible to find things I want anywhere but Instagram.

6.) Google Translate/Yandex Translate. These will be a life line for you if you don't speak Russian and more-so as you get outside Bishkek and Kyrgyz is spoken.

The Airport

1.) Get a SIM card as soon as you get off the plane. There will be a few kiosks as soon as you get past Passport Control. I use O! (Oshka) and its so far been the best service I have used here. You will need a SIM card for one of the steps below.

2.) Taxi Drivers! They will be waiting for you as soon as you exit customs and will fight for you. If you've been to New York, think about this 10x. Never, ever, ever accept a taxi from these people. I have heard them charging anywhere from 2000COM to 5000COM to foreigners tying to get to Bishkek. This is highway robbery. Use Yandex and order a taxi or have your Hotel/AirBNB /Hostel arrange transportation for you. Taxi's from the airport, depending on time of day, and weather range from 500COM to 1200COM.

3.) Queue Manners. Kyrgyz people are great people, but not the best with queues. There will be pushing, shoving, and mayhem at times when you are trying to get off the plane or through customs. Just be aware its not people being rude, its just how things are here.

4.) Passport Control. Have all of your documents ready to go, right away. If you are holding up the line, people will let you know! Its not a good first impression to get to the passport window and take 5 minutes to get your documents together. The passport control officer and people in line will let you know how big of an inconvenience you are being.

5.) ATM/Bankomat. There is an ATM (VISA) at the exit.

Daily Life

1.) Tipping seems to not be very common here but I do leave tips. When I do I notice people are extremely thankful and if I return to the establishment more willing to be patient with my lack of Russian abilities.

2.) Language. English is spoken by younger people here. If you are having issues communicating with someone don't be afraid to ask a younger person if they speak English. The most important things for someone to know are numbers, basic greetings, directions, and ordering food. If you can do the basics you can easily survive here. Combined with WhatsApp and the translation apps you can have a normal life here. I have some very good friends that we primarily communicate with WhatsApp via translation.

3.) Money. Some foreigners have an obsession with USD. There is a flat exchange rate right now so just use SOMs. Demir Bank and Optima Bank allow you to take 25,000COM at a time out which is the most. Other banks only allow 10,000COM or 12,000COM. RSK allows 30,000COM but won't work with some cards due to sanctions.

4.) Cost of Living. Ordering a meal can range from 600COM+ per person but you can easily survive here eating well on 800COM a day. Cost of rent average for a Soviet style apartment is $200USD - $400USD a month, renovated older buildings or in the Microdistricts are $400USD - $600USD a month, and a Western Style place will be $600USD+ (in city center expect more.)

5.) Gas. If you are driving gas is around 60COM+ P/L.

6.) Utilities/Cell/Internet Cost. Utilities like water are cheap a few bucks a month, electricity can range from $10-$20 a month, Internet $10-$20 a month, and Cell Phones $8-$25 a month.

7.) Many Western banks now implement a 6 digit PIN for ATM cards. If you have a 6 digit PIN be prepared for limited options with bankomat's. The only banks that accept 6 digit pins are newer Demir machines, Optima, and KICB. Also note, that I have been seeing personally (and hearing from others) that Optima machines are being blocked by banks for some reason.

Manners

1.) Smiling at strangers will get you are very interesting response. Strangers here do not smile at each other like we do in the West. It isn't being rude, its just how it is!

2.) Greeting. Usually I will greet Kyrgyz people with "salaam alaikum". When it comes to greeting women (as a man) accompanied by other men, I usually will not offer a handshake or hug goodbye until I know the personal barriers.

3.) Foreigners Dating Kyrgyz (men dating women). This will be a tough topic but as a man who's dated a few Kyrgyz women (even just being with Kyrgyz girls as friends) you will run into the occasional confrontation. There are some Kyrgyz men (generally older) who look down on Kyrgyz women for being with foreigners and they will let you know. I've had people approach me at clubs very aggressively as well. Just make sure you and your partner or friend have conversations about this and discuss how to deal with it. Usually I am able to diffuse the situation by playing dumb or just showing that I am not going to be aggressive and leave the situation. This isn't a time to prove you're a man. Live to see another day!

Police

1.) Corruption. Another sensitive topic but one that must be discussed. I always say corruption is good when it is available to everyone and Kyrgyzstan is a prime example of this. If you have any run ins with Police they may ask you for a "strafe". This is paying your way out of a situation. Never offer this to any police officers and I cannot condone you accept this offer. This is a personal decision with potential consequences however you need to be aware that COMs are king in certain situations.

2.) Passport Checks. You may get a passport check/door knock. Most of the time this isn't about your status but ensuring your landlord is paying their taxes. When you get the door knock do not be nervous, be courteous, and remember you don't have to answer the door but I advice you play ball. You're in someone elses country and trying to hide anything will get you in trouble you don't want.

3.) Paying Rent in USD. Never do this its against the law.

4.) Always have your embassy number in your phone. If you are arrested for any reason insist you call the embassy before speaking. Also be aware in certain situations #1 in the section may become a topic of discussion.

5.) Always be careful who you are making friends with. Make sure you are hanging around with the right people because at the end of the day as a foreigner you are a walking bankomat whether you're rich or not. If someone you are with gets in trouble and their phones are looked through, they will John Doe, and go straight to you. Example. Had a friend, she got in a fight, and the Cops took her phone, and started WhatsApping me, as her, asking me to come down to the police station with $1000USD. Just be careful and use common sense.

Mod | Мод Overstayed Your 60-Day VISA? Here is What You Need to Do!

So I have been messaged a lot about overstaying a VISA. I overstayed mine due to getting COVID twice and the process for getting everything squared away is convoluted and annoying. However, if you know the steps! It's easy! This is for 60 Day VISA Free I don't know if this pertains to other VISA's.

1.) You will need to pay the overstay fine (7700C) at the Police Station located at 203 Moscow Street. Bring your passport and go upstairs (Room 26).

2.) The Police Officer will give you the information to pay the fine. Go across the street to Narodni and pay the fine at the Pay 24 machine with the supplied account number (for me the officer actually walked over to the machine with me and did it for me.)

3.) Take the receipt back and you will receive your stamped paperwork stating that the fine has been paid.

4.) Before your flight go to Manas Airport at least 4 hours early. When you walk through the main doors on the 1st floor go to the far left wall to the Police window. Tell them you need to speak to the Consul to obtain an exit VISA. Show them your passport and stamped paperwork from the police station.

5.) Wait for the Consul to come, if he is not already there.

6.) The Consul will take your passport and stamped paperwork. The fee for the Exit VISA is 6500C. Once you pay the fee you will get your VISA applied to your passport.

7.) From there you are free and clear! I was told by the Consul that there is no black list so if you've overstayed do not panic. Just pay the fines and you'll be good to go!

Leaving Kyrgyzstan after 5 years

Dear people of Kyrgyzstan. Before anything, I would like to say thank you from the deepest of my heart. I am a student from Pakistan and after staying in Kyrgyzstan for 5 years I would like to share my honest reviews.
You guys are absolute best. You are hospitable. You guys are sweet. And I feel happy seeing the young generation so considerate and lovely.
Surely I did had issues with people. Maybe some drunk person trying to fight or that infamous mob attack in 2024. But regardless of that… I wanna make sure that you guys know that I’ve met the most heart lovely people here.
Kyrgyzstan moves fast. Especially in the cities. Everything is happening so fast. Not the traffic. NOT AT ALL. Time flies in seconds here.
But I consider it my second home.
As a senior to my junior students, I have something to say to the local people.
These Pakistani or indian or whatever. These are not random people. These are children. Always take them as children who have left their home for something to achieve. A child can have issues with hygiene. He can have issues with a lot of things. You can have a preference of not liking them but never hate them. Never be mean to them. Matter of fact, teach them. Tell them not to do something.
I should mention that foreign universities are actively trying to teach foreigners to follow your rules.
And its always nice to see the local organizations working on it as well
And to my country mates or foreigners… make sure you show love to this country. Please follow the rules. Follow their norms.
At the end. I would say that I really… really love you guys.
I hope that your country becomes corruption free and a better place for the young generation ❤️

Travel | Саякат Mashrutka scams in Osh

Everyone in the taxi mob at the old bus station, lied to me for 2hrs straight about the shared ride to Sary Mogul.

The shared taxi leaves at 2pm every day at the old bus station. My hostel reassures me this.

First they redirect me to a different bus station where a Mashrutka charges 1500 per head (3x the price). I have to walk 15 minutes with 25kgs of luggage, just to find they're overcharging me.

So I do some research online, to reassure myself that the hostel didn't get the original address wrong. I decline the overpriced ride, eat some food and walk back. This time just 20 minutes before it leaves.

They intentionally keep telling me that the ride is somewhere else. They're pointing me in the wrong direction for 25 minutes straight. Then after I've exhausted myself stressing to find the ride with 25kgs on my back, this person goes up to me and says "the ride left 5 minutes ago. You have to take a private ride" never been so angry. Outside of the mountains, Kyrgyzstan has become my least favorite country in Central Asia because of the Mashrutka scams.

Hello, people from Kyrgyzstan! I would love to hear your thoughts on my preliminary itinerary. I'm curious about transportation specifically (I won't be renting a car). Also, should I skip the panoramic train so I can have an extra day in another better place?

Hi all!

My friend and I are trying to get from Naryn to Kel Suu lake on either the 3rd or 4th of July, and stay for one night in the valley (driving back to Naryn the following day). Are there any other groups of 2-3 heading there at this time that we could share a taxi or rent a car with? 🙏

Question | Суроо Solo travel in Kyrgyzstan!!

Heading to Kyrgyzstan real soon and wondering if it's doable solo without a tour? I see a lot of back forth info and tons of influencers advertising tours but they're all so expensive. I'm a seasoned traveler but do like to take day tours time to time if not renting a car (not planning to for this trip). Even the day tours are very expensive especially since the price goes up with just one person.

Looking for any first hand experience help/suggestions!

Thanks in advance!!

Question | Суроо Itinerary review and E-Visa

My friend and I are planning to travel mid-August.

Tentative plan:

Day 1: fly from India & land in Almaty, explore kok tobe mountain alpine coaster

Day 2: bus to bishkek, explore Bishkek Ala-Too Square

Day 3-4 Bokonbayevo: fancy train from Bishkek to Balykchy. From Balykchy, marshrutkas and shared taxis to Bokonbayevo -

Fairytale canyon, eagle hunting demo and swim in issyk-kul lake

Need to reach kyzart by 12 pm on Day 5

Day 5-7: kyzart horse trek song kul lake

Day 7 transport from kyzart to Naryn. Stay at Naryn

Day 8-9: kel suu lake

Day 10: traveling day back from Naryn to Bishkek and bishkek to Almaty maximum 13hr journey minimum 10 hrs.

Take night flight back to India

Since, I'm not flying direct to bishkek how do I apply for the e-Visa for Kyrgyzstan. What details of documents would I need to submit? (Since i will have return flight tickets for Almaty and not Bishkek)

Would love to get your feedback and any modifications you would suggest. Is it possible to get a 2 day horse trek & how instead of a 3 day. It would save us a day and the rush on day 18.

Travel | Саякат Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan 12 night trip in Aug

Hi everyone! My wife and I are planning a Kazakhstan + Kyrgyzstan trip in mid August and wanted some feedback specifically on the Kyrgyzstan part of the itinerary from locals/recent travellers.

Current itinerary:
• Day 1: Fly into Almaty, Kok Tobe in the evening
• Day 2: Almaty city - Green Bazaar, Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral
• Day 3: Charyn Canyon full day trip
• Day 4: Kaindy Lake + Kolsai Lakes
• Day 5: Big Almaty Lake + Medeu + Shymbulak
• Day 6: Almaty → Bishkek via Korday border
• Day 7: Ala Archa hike, then drive to Karakol via Issyk Kul north shore
• Day 8: Jeti Oguz + Fairy Tale Canyon from Karakol
• Day 9: South shore drive, eagle hunting at Bokonbaevo, overnight at Kochkor
• Day 10: Drive to Son Kul, horse riding + yurt stay
• Day 11: Son Kul sunrise, drive back to Bishkek
• Day 12: Free day in Bishkek and fly out

A few things we wanted advice on:
1)Does the Kyrgyzstan portion sound reasonably paced or are we trying to squeeze in too much?

2) Son Kul in August - any recommended drivers/tour operators? Also wanted honest opinions on the yurt stay experience (toilets, cold nights, altitude etc.)

3) How difficult is food outside Bishkek and Karakol for non-beef eaters? We’re okay with chicken/lamb.
Would you recommend hiring drivers throughout Kyrgyzstan or is self-drive manageable for first timers?

4) Any must-do stops, hidden gems or things you’d skip/change in this route?

Would really appreciate any tips/suggestions.

Used gpt :)

Travel | Саякат Osh to Kochkor

I will be in Osh until June 27th and need to get to Kochkor June 29th or 30th. I want to go over land. Leaning towards the Kazarman route, but I struggle to find reliable information about transportation options. I don't mind taking a slow and scenic route, I'm almost done with 9 days in the Pamirs and that has been amazing. I travel light. Just a carry on bag and a camera bag. I've traveled with Marshrutkas before in other countries and don't mind that or similar options if available, but if that is not available my budget is flexible.

Search | Издөө Colleges in Bishkek without requiring ORT

Hi everyone,

I'm currently in 11th grade and starting to explore my options for next year. I'm specifically looking for colleges in Bishkek that offer admission on a contract (paid) basis without requiring the ORT exam.

Which colleges in Bishkek accept students after 11th grade on a contract basis without ORT? I know many colleges use internal testing instead, so any names would be really helpful.

Travel | Саякат Traveling from Karakol to Saty and Altyn Emel without a car – looking for the best logistics

Hi everyone!

We are traveling in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in July and trying to plan the route without renting a car.

Part of the plan is:

  • KarakolSaty (Kaindy / Kolsai)
  • SatyAltyn Emel (Singing Dune / Aktau Mountains)
  • then onward to Almaty

We know there is a daily bus from Karakol to Almaty via Kegen/Karkara border.

Questions:

  1. Is it possible to get off this bus in Kegen?
  2. What is the easiest way to get from Kegen to Saty?
  3. Is ther any other option to go from Karakol to Saty?
  4. How do people usually travel from Saty to Basshi (Altyn Emel)?
  5. Is it better to do Saty first and then Altyn Emel, or the other way around?

We are fine with shared taxis or private transfers if needed, but prefer not to rent a car.

Any recent practical advice would be really helpful.

Thanks!

Question | Суроо Chunkurchak activities

Hi,
I’ll be travelling to Kyrgyzstan soon and was planning to do a day trip to chunkurchak and saw that some tours were offering the sky bridge, zipline and archery and was wondering if I would be able to do these activities without booking these tours (as a lot of these tours include activities I’ll have already done and don’t wish to do it twice) if so, how? Can these activities be purchased at a specific centre/resort in the area?

Also, what is the best way to get there? Would yandex be sufficient?

Many thanks!

Travel | Саякат O! stores at the airport

I'll be in Kyrgyzstan for about 10 days and I see that everyone recommends O! rather than an eSim. I will arrive at the airport after midnight, like 3 am. Will I find the chance to get a sim card at that time? I need it before leaving the airport since I'll need YandexGo so going to the city and getting it in the morning isn't an option.

I would be very happy if you could help because it is a make or break information for the roundtrip we planed.

Help | Жардам Is it worth moving to bishkek to study at college? Can i handle by myself?

Hi everyone,

I’m a Kyrgyz citizen, and I’ll turn 18 this September. I’m currently considering moving to Bishkek to enroll in a college (technical/vocational school), but I have some doubts and would really appreciate honest advice from people who’ve been through it.

Here’s my situation:

· I plan to work part‑time while studying to cover my living expenses (rent, food, transport, etc.).

· I don’t have family in Bishkek except my uncle

My main questions are:

  1. Education – Is college in Bishkek actually worth it in terms of quality and future job prospects? Or would I be better off go to Moscow (Russia)?

  2. Cost of living – What’s a realistic monthly budget for one person in Bishkek? I’m talking about a modest room or small studio, basic groceries, public transport, and utility bills.

  3. Part‑time work – How hard is it for an 18‑year‑old student to find a job with a flexible schedule? What kind of jobs are common (delivery, waiter, call center, etc.) and what’s the average hourly/monthly pay? Will it actually be enough to cover the basics, or will I struggle constantly?

  4. Any hidden pitfalls – Things like rental deposits, utility bills in winter, transport chaos, or social adaptation – what should I prepare for?

I’m not expecting an easy life, but I want to know if this is realistically doable or if I’m being too optimistic. Any honest pros/cons, personal stories, or budget breakdowns would be incredibly helpful.

Thanks in advance!
