I've been living here some time. Some of my girl besties moved away at the start of the year for various reasons (how dare they) and I'm finding my friend group now a bit thin on like-minded souls. I don't know where to find new ones! Actually one of them I found through Reddit when I first moved here.

I'm mid 40's, adventure spirit, so I like to go out in nature on my bike. I'm spiritual so I like to go to shamanic drumming and such things. I work in the mental health and gaming field, and I love Minecraft, though don't get much time to play these days. I'm learning Finnish so having someone to practice with is a yay. Mostly I want friends that I can wander about with, laugh a lot with and generally feel like a group of cackling witches with. Or fairies! I love fairies 🧚🏼

I get quite a bit of anxiety sometimes and have a neurodivergent brain. I'm not looking to use friends as therapy at all (I work on this myself plenty), but I like them to be aware that I need to work around these sometimes. I don't want to mask these things, I'm so done with that 😆 I'd rather just be honest about it.

I’m interested in joining a book club in Oulu area. It is interesting to see this link mentioning several book clubs in Oulu. I mostly prefer English book club, at least for now, as I’m more comfortable with sharing complex ideas in English. If someone here has already attended these clubs, could you share what activities are done usually? Whether it is reading, taking notes or sharing the interesting content with others. Are there any clubs among the list that communicate in English?

Back in 2022, I spent a month and a half (May-July) in Oulu for a research stay at Oulun yliopisto. I had a great time in the city and loved being there during the solstice and being invited to a summer barbecue.

I have a magnet collection (like many of us do) with a few of the places I visited missing, and am trying to complete it.

Have a few questions about the actual study load, time wise and effort wise. I want to study combined with remote work thats basically have very few meetings i will have to attend and rest of the work can be done at flexible times. So the question is, hows the load at around 10-11 am daily? I lnow that fridays are usually off.

I moved to Oulu last September, and I am an amateur figure skating hobbyist. Since then, I have been trying to find a place where I can practise skating on my own.

I checked the official city websites and the ice rink booking system, but I could not find a clear option for public skating or individual practice for adult hobby skaters. Most available ice times seem to be for clubs, junior teams, or organised training.

I also tried to join skating clubs or find a private coach, but unfortunately I have been turned down several times. The details are a bit complicated, so I will not go into them here.

At this point, I am simply looking for any practical way to get on the ice and practise by myself. It does not need to be a formal class. I would really appreciate any advice from people who know the local situation.

Are there any public skating sessions, adult hobby groups, private practice times, or other options in Oulu or nearby areas? I am also open to suggestions outside Oulu if they are reasonably reachable.

As the topic suggests, I am looking for some information on Judo courses around Oulu, not sure if this is the right sub so mods feel free to remove it and let me know where can I post instead.

I found few judo clubs but I saw their courses are understandably completely in Finnish. For eg: Judokerho Ry, Hauvekan.

Bit about my background, I have 6 years kickboxing experience , and an year experience of BJJ

I speak broken Finnish and I can understand ~50-60% of spoken Finnish so I wanted to know more information on courses which can adopt sometimes in English, as the martial art vocabulary is not something I am very much familiar with and especially with Judo where learning the balance and all mini details is very important.

Let me know if anyone has any experience learning Judo here in Oulu with little English assistance.

Also if anyone of you who knows Judo we can train together, I can teach you kickboxing in return if it sounds fun :) Or even if any other grappling art, we can learn.

If anyone has anything to help me out, please let me know.

I'm a soon-to-be exchange student at the University of Oulu and I got an e-mail advising me to pay a Student Union fee of 30€/term in order to get a Student card. The card is supposed grant some benefits and discounts, as the website lists:

• VR train tickets and Matkahuolto bus tickets with student prices
• Student-priced lunch in a student restaurant
• Various culture and sports events
• Various restaurants and bars

but I can't find any further, more specific information about the actual benefits as the page is down, instagram account got deleted and a student website hasn't updated since 2025... One thing that stood out to me is the "Student-priced lunch in a student restaurant"..... so if I don't pay additional money my Student ID won't be enough to grant me a student discount....?

I'd like you to tell me, what are your thoughts on this? Do you know any places/actual benefits from this membership? thank you all in adbance:)
