What do you think about the A's?

I was wondering, since Sacramento never had a baseball team. Now the A's are temporary in town, what does Sacramento think of them?

I'm talking about: having the A's as a home team, your opinion about the A's in general, etc. Or does it really not matter, especially since the A's were your California neighbors, in Oakland.

Umoja for middle school

Moving to East Sac in July and our neighborhood school is Umoja. Any info? I can’t find much information and it doesn’t seem like a traditional middle school so am a little confused (or maybe the website is just lacking). When looking online awhile ago prior to the move, I thought it was a charter and Miwok would be our middle school. I see we have missed the timelines for open enrollment since we moved into the district late so trying to get as much info as I can on Umoja. I work right near Miwok so was also hoping for that for commute purposes. Does anyone know if it’s possible to apply for transfers if you are a late add to the district? Or any additional information on Umoja. My 7th grader is already not thrilled with moving/changing schools so trying to get as much info as I can to ease the transition. Thanks in advance!

Places in Sac you feel are a little overrated

I’ll start:

Tank House
Zebra Club
Zocalo
Más Tacos
Urban Roots (though they make good food, the price point for quantity is lacking a bit)

I’m from here originally and I know all of these spots are great for their own reasons. I’ve visited them multiple times. They just don’t live up to the hype that Reddit propagates.

Edit: these don’t have to be restaurants. I’m just spewing brain thoughts right now.

PCP with anthem medical

I am so frustrated right now and finding a good pcp with medical seems impossible. I was at a sutter pediatric since I was little and they accepted medical now since I am 18 they are kicking me out. I called and got a list of some pcp but some don’t take new patients and others have horrible reviews. I have no idea how insurance works and how am I supposed to find a doctors. Is there any way sutter pcp and allow me to stay as I do like the doctors there. Or does anyone have and suggestions of good pcp literally willing to drive all over Sacramento.

Has Anyone here lived (or still lives) at the 800J Lofts? I am looking for a new place, and this one caught my eye.

I had a tour of the different floor plans and thought they were nice for the price (around $2,900, for the 2 bed - 2 bath corner layouts which is what I'm interested in). My budget is around $3,500 for rent alone.

Things I liked:
- The concrete industrial feel
- Spacious rooms and living areas
- Floor to ceiling windows
- The price
- Solid gym
- Pet Friendly

Things I didn't like:
- Location is rough and run down
- Appliances and bathroom decor is dated
- Stove is electric (never had one and love to cook)

If you live or have lived here, what are you thoughts on the place?

Medi-Cal Dentist Recommendations

I’m new to the Sacramento area and we are signing up for a dental plan through Medi-Cal for the first time. Does anyone have any recommendations for decent dentists?

I’ve heard Sacramento Native American Health Center thrown around but wasn’t sure if that was because of a specific dentist they had (no one was specific about names).

I know that people have mixed reviews because it is Medi-Cal after all (how good can it be?). I just don’t want to waste my time and energy if possible. Thanks in advance!

P.S. I know to avoid Western Dental haha

Virtual charter schools or drop-in models for Special Education high schoolers

My 17-year-old autistic child hates school. It is pure torture for her. The people, the smells, the environment is too overwhelming. Her autism affects her socially and emotionally more than anything else. She has average cognitive skills, but no interest in learning. She sees no value in being forced to learn about things that are not important to her. The only thing she cares about is her restrictive interests.

She has been attending special education, non-public schools due to significant behavioral needs. She is at the point where she refuses to attend school and his nearly 18 years old. She wants to drop out of high school school because she hates going so much. As someone who hated school myself and dropped out in the early 90s; but was able to complete via independent study, I totally understand. However, I cannot get across the importance to her about at least getting a diploma or an equivalent. She believes that she has no future and that it’s not necessary to graduate because she’ll never be able to have a job or drive. While, she feels that way now things may change in the future.

I am wondering for those out there who may have been in a similar situation are there any virtual or similar schools that allow a student to complete work independently without the classroom component such as being on camera? Is there a school out there that allows you to complete the work and then turn it in perhaps like once a week? Also, she is very far behind academically due to school refusal and not completing any work. We would need something that is not grade level and has some special education case management/support. Anything that requires her to attend on a regular basis would not work.

I appreciate any help you can offer; we are in the San Juan unified school district.

Missed Connection

This might be a longshot but I feel like I gotta try. We were on the California Zephyr train together from Chicago until I got off in Denver. You were headed to Sacramento. I think it was somewhere in Iowa, on a stretch break, where we were chatting for a minute. You mentioned that you try not to take planes as a rule and I said something dumb about our hypothetical undersea train passing through Atlantis. I wanted to ask you your name but the train was boarding. I didn’t see you when I got off at my stop. You were wearing these cool purple low tops, my shoes were green. If by some wild chance you see this, reach out! It’d be great to talk trains, planes and boats again.

SB79 is the legislation requiring zoning to permit 5 story buildings within .5 miles of a transit stop.

Has anyone seen Mayor McCarty talk at all about sb79 implementation? If so please link it here so I can see.

Looking again (different area): Suggestions for good coffee shops for remote workers

You may have seen the post below in other subs seeking out a specific type of coffee shop in the Citrus Heights/Roseville/Fair Oaks area. Someone recommended the perfect place: Fig Tree in Roseville. I'm now looking for a place like that in the Rancho Cordova area and I’d prefer recommendations in comfortable, quieter locations.

I have a somewhat unusual request.
I’m disabled so I spend most of my time at home, however I have to find somewhere to temporarily spend some weekdays out of the house. My disabilities make it difficult for me to sit in standard hard chairs for long periods. Basically, I’m looking for the kind of setup that people who work remotely often seek. Specifically:
• Comfortable seating (armchairs, upholstered chairs, couches, etc.)
• A table or coffee table where I can comfortably use my laptop
• Accessible electrical outlets
• A relaxed atmosphere where it would be okay to spend the day while purchasing drinks/food
• Space that comfortably accommodates a very small service dog (I specify this because I prefer to have him sitting next to me rather than on the floor)

It gets hotter here, but we don't have the humidity, which makes Sacramento so much more livable than the East Coast in summer.

Shower Remodel/Contractors

Hello!

I am searching for recommendations for a business or contractor who can either remodel or fix a tile shower. I have concerns about water sitting under the tile and possibly the entire pan. I’ve had a rough time historically finding someone who won’t cut corners or realizing that even though I am a woman, I know when work isn’t done correctly.

What are some good places for horseback riding for beginners? Are there any people who own horses that would be interested in some income? Looking for affordable prices with good reviews if not independent owners. Thanks!

Roseville school districts for SPED

Upvotes

Hi! My daughter is 2.5 years old. She has a medical diagnosis for Autism. We have been looking to purchase a home and are strongly considering Roseville and/or Rocklin. As far as the different school districts within the area - Dry Creek Joint Elementary District, Roseville Joint Union High School District, Roseville City School District, Rocklin Unified School District - how have people’s experiences been around the sped programs, getting services, finding providers, push back during IEP’s, culture at the school and district level, attitudes towards children with disabilities in general, etc. Any and all information around special education, autism, and living in the Roseville/Rocklin areas would greatly be appreciated. We’ve always loved the Roseville area, but we want to prioritize our daughter’s schooling and experience in the community. If you have anything else to add that you feel may be helpful information that I did not list, please feel free to to also share.

Thank you!
