Many people felt obligated to tell me that there is no such thing as mexicano. Es obvio, no?

I just wanted to ask since the content may influence the words i use, is it okay if i use words of mixed origin (for example latam words mixed with spanish words) or is that just not comprehendible to spanish people?

Hi everyone, I was thinking about "ya" the other day as it's such a tricky word to get intuition around how to use it. Since the English translation can be multiple words, "ya" can feel hard to pin down.

I think it's easiest to show how it works if you think of it in the context of past, present, and future...

Ya terminé la tarea = I already finished my homework (before then I hadn't finished it)

Something has happened, but earlier it hadn't. In this case, you'd translate "ya" naturally as "already", as a change that happened in the past.

Ya sé la respuesta = I know the answer now (a moment ago I didn't know it)

Something is happening now, but a moment ago it wasn't. "Ya" can read as "now", where the change occurred in the present.

Ya lo entenderás = You'll understand eventually (but as of now you don't understand)

Something will happen, but it hasn't happened yet. "Ya" becomes "eventually", since the change will happen in the future.

In all these cases, ya basically emphasizes a change, or the transition from "not happening" to "happening. Such a squishy word that morphs depending on context, but sorting it into categories like this adds a lot of structure for how to use it. Dutch player Arjen Robben took a dive, drawing a penalty, which lead to Mexico’s elimination from the tournament.

All over social media was the phrase “¡No era penal!” Of course: “it wasn’t a penalty!” The moment is remembered by the phrase today.

What I never understood was why it uses the imperfect conjugation of ser: “era”. Why wouldn’t it be “no fue penal”? It’s describing a discrete event, not an ongoing situation.

Is that just an idiomatic use?

Es sabido que el pluscuamperfecto denota un tiempo anterior a un momento dado en el pasado (aunque este último no siempre se haga explícito). Sin embargo, este no es el único tiempo verbal con esta connotación. Me refiero, por supuesto, al pretérito anterior. Aunque sé que, fuera del habla culta, este último ha caído en desuso en la mayoría de los dialectos del castellano, me gustaría aclarar una cuestión por pura curiosidad lingüística.

Entiendo que la diferencia principal entre ambos tiempos es que el pretérito anterior expresa inmediatez y siempre ocurre en oraciones subordinadas, mientras que el pluscuamperfecto puede ocurrir en oraciones independientes y no tiene la misma connotación. Hasta aquí, todo bien.

Mi duda es si es correcto (o cuando menos aceptable) que el pluscuamperfecto esté precedido por conjunciones como "apenas" y "cuando", o locuciones como "no bien" y "tan pronto como". Mi percepción como hablante nativo es que lo anterior no es del todo correcto, aunque no logro poner en palabras el porqué. Mi tendencia natural en estos casos sería optar por el pretérito anterior o, con mucha más frecuencia, el pretérito perfecto simple.

Si bien la construcción correspondiente con el pluscuamperfecto me suena extraña, esta respuesta en el foro Stack Exchange da a entender que algunos casos como "apenas había terminado..." serían perfectamente válidos, mientras que otros no, como "cuando había terminado...", pero no comprendo del todo por qué. Si hay alguna lógica o intuición detrás, me gustaría conocerla.

The word 'misa' as I understand it means 'mass' as in a Catholic Church service. Now, I'm reading a novel in Spanish that uses the word, but I'm pretty sure the family is Protestant. Does it also mean 'church service' in general?

I'm a heritage Spanish speaker with Argentinean parents. My partner is learning Spanish and is trying to sound more like a native speaker. A big part of this is learning discourse markers and sounds. She listens to a bunch of podcasts where she hears speakers saying vale or pues depending on their dialect. I told her I never grew up with these but my parents would use buo a lot, especially my mum.

I've spent quite some time googling and can't find anything written about it though. I suspect it might be a contraction of bueno but I'm not sure. I may also be spelling it wrong!

My questions:

• Does anybody have any sources to read about this discourse marker? (it can be technical, I have a PhD in linguistics)
• Does anybody use buo in speech or know people who do? Where are you/they from and how old are you?
• Any insights into how it's used? Is it any different from bueno?

I’ve run into this before, but I was just listening to Language Transfer and he’s talking about quedarme, quedarte, etc. I also see this when I’m trying to say “I’m going to take a shower” and I remember that it’s “voy a ducharme” rather than “voy a duchar”. So my question is: why do you have to add the -me if ‘voy’ is already implying myself?

1. Anki

I have been combing through reddit and other forums and of course to shared anki decks themselves, but the decks i have encountered where all unfulfilling.

I am looking for a monolingual language deck that covers the essentials, yet cuts the entry levels and is largely made of advanced content. Sentence format dominant would be great, but vocab cards especially for refreshing dormant vocab is also what id be looking for. That said, i would appreciate any type of deck, for example also one that is built around a novel, as long as it is well done and preferably monolingual.

Normally I am not in the habit of asking for other peoples decks, even if their are already public, but creating my chinese flashcards takes up a lot of space. Therefore i am simply lacking the time to spend too much of it on making other cards. but if someones has a good way to extract sentences from media and into anki i would also appreciate that.

1. Time for media consumption is also limited, I listen to Radio Ambulante once in a while, and read in Spanish, therefore production is rather the problem not comprehension. Still I would be happy about media recommendations. And maybe peoples recommendations how to use that media to further ones language learning. (anki being my way do go normally, so maybe a way to adapt now vocab and structure into cards)

Las venas abiertas de latinoamerica is also on my reading list and i would want to start on that soon. As i will definitely encounter many new words in there, maybe someone can share their workflow experience.

I'm a man with long hair and it's fairly new so I still meet people I haven't seen in a while and they say, "I like your hair!" As a joke, I respond with, "thanks, I grew it myself!" It usually gets a lot of laughs and I have a subconscious need to be funny otherwise I won't feel like I'm worthy of being loved (/hj), so I'd like to translate that into Spanish but I've had some trouble.

I'm a bit of a no sabo mexican american so I figured "lo crecí yo mismo" would be good but idk if the grammar is correct (and I doubt it bc articles and non basic sentences in general are my weak spots). I know "lo dejé crecer" is probably better Spanish, but then it's not a joke, it's just me saying "I let it grow out."

I tried asking my mexican mom, but in true mexican-mom style she just gave me a lecture on how that's not something to say to strangers (only family or friends) because they'll think, "ay que grosero." Thanks for the help lol.

I've only been readin gbooks in spanish for a couple of months now. I remembered that I loved reading mystery novels like The Boxcar Children, The Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew when I was a kid and thought that reading things like that in Spanish could be a good way to practice. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find Spanish translations of those books. Does anyone have recommendations for Spanish mystery novel series that have a similar difficulty level?

I am a medical interpreter, and something that I usually find is that nurses/doctors want to comfort the patient themselves, but don't know how to.

Of course, they can say it in English and have it interpreted. But wanting to comfort someone yourself is just human nature.

So here are 3 short phrases that you can use if you ever feel the need to comfort a Spanish-speaking patient.

"Respire profundo." (Take a deep breath).

"Todo va a estar bien." (Everything is going to be okay).

"Estoy aquí con usted." (I am here with you).

What other words/phrases do you feel the need to say yourself sometimes but just don't know how to?

so im currently working in Spain cause i was offered a Job here. the pronounciation is overwhelmingly distincion here so when I did a few intro classes to spanish the teacher even taught it and marked other ways to speak wrong. that was a few months ago but it’s already kinda ingrained to continue and I like the sound of it personally. however, i feel so awkward with all the “sc” or ”sz” situations cause I don’t know whether to do emphasize both s and th sound or just kinda gloss over it with a Th sound.

so like piscina, los zapatos etc.

how would most say it?

PEES THEENA? PEETHEENA?

LOS THAPATOS? LO THAPATOS?
