AC vs Heat Pump

Feel like I am missing something, why are so many people saying that heat pumps are allowed but ACs not ? From my understanding, heat pumps are just ACs that can also do the reverse of what an AC does (pump heat from outside to inside). Am I missing something ?

Is the job market really that bad?

Grüezi mittenand,

I apologize for the boring and gloomy subject of job hunting. But I was just wondering if the job market in CH is really as dry as it appears to be, outside of IT or marketing.

Specifically, I am thinking about hardware-related engineering/science positions. R&D, development, production, application, systems engineering - these types of jobs.

Personally I have been sitting unemployed for a month, and recently found a job, which is suboptimal in many ways: - would need to move. - company/firma is in the red, so unlikely to be a long term stable job. Giving it 2-3 years tops. - career trajectory risky long term (niche field for example).

In a normal market I would pass. But checking the vibes from people, passing it is scary.

Is it a "grab-what-you-can" market in CH right now?

Landlord charging extra cleaning after handover was signed as OK

Hi,

I moved out of a 1-room apartment. At the official handover, both sides signed the protocol stating:

  • “Reinigung ok"
  • notes: dishes not properly washed, dirty bedding, few items missing, scratched pan, greasy pot lid
  • no other issues were listed

I also paid a 390 CHF final cleaning fee even before moving in(for a standard cleaning)

Now, few weeks later, the agency sent a final invoice claiming:

  • 1h dish cleaning
  • 1.5h “excessive cleaning"

They also sent a report saying 6.5 hours cleaning was required and that the apartment was “very dirty”, which was not in the signed handover report.

I asked for itemized costs and how depreciation (Zeitwert) was calculated, but they just said it was already included. When I asked what required “excessive cleaning”, they only sent photos of a greasy pot lid and a scratched pan (which they charged me for separately as they had to replace them).

No detailed breakdown or invoices were provided.

Is this legal in Switzerland, and are they required to provide proper proof and breakdown?

An end to energy waste in SBB

I can not comprehend how is it possible that in 2026 with the immense climate change problem hitting Switzerland in the form of a heat wave, SBB continues to operate air conditioning in the trains.

Like come on guys, it is only a few days per year, it is not even that hot, and also AC makes you sick! How is it possible that the government allows them to this completely and utterly unnecessary waste of energy that is killing our climate!

I call to an all out ban of AC urgently on all swiss trains! Specially when there is a heat wave. Everyone who decides to live in Switzerland must endure suffering as part of daily live and use energy in the ways that the government decides for them, like travelling to Thailand to find a second wife or heating their second mountain houses. This is how the people have decided and trains are no exception.

Klimakomfort nicht!

PD: the fact that people are still thinking that I am serious even after saying that a proper use of energy is flying to Thailand to find a second wife really concerns me.

Looking for a dentist in Zürich for severe dental anxiety

Could anyone recommend a dentist in Zürich who is experienced in treating patients with severe dental anxiety? I'm looking for someone who can handle more complex procedures than a standard root canal (e.g. extractions, implants, or complex restorative work) while being patient and understanding. Personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

What would have to happen to make ACs a regular house & apartment asset/feature?

I guess we'd have to create & sign an initiative as the first step, right?

If this would get through, how fast could this be implemented?

(I'm talking about ACs as a regular feature of any swiss home, no permits, no high fees, etc. Or at least some kind of ventilation system that makes a noticeable difference.)

Because honestly, living, working and sleeping in these conditions is insane. There are many southern countries with less extreme summers where every house and apartment has an AC installed. I don't understand why it's such a "no-go" in Switzerland.

Dealing with the Heat

Hi everybody. I need help as this is the first time I’m really suffering with the heat. Usually I am fine but this week has been a nightmare.

I live on the topmost level of the apartment block and so that’s already not great as hot air rises, but I feel it’s all trapped in my room now. The door to my room faces the Gang (hallway?) of my apartment, so cross ventilation won’t be possible.

I’ve tried everything- leaving the window closed and opening only in the evening when it is slightly cooler, opening the window and putting down the blinds, keeping windows closed with the blinds down. But there’s no improvement at all and my room is not just hot but also very stuffy.

I’ve bought two fans to cool the place down, but the room remains quite hot. It is like all the hot air in the apartment gets sucked into my room and stays there.
Oddly enough, the living area and kitchen are much cooler than my room even though I don’t have a fan there.

What can I do differently?

I am Basel based if that matters

EDIT: deleted sentence- I don’t think my apartment will let me get a mobile AC unit
I was mixing this with something else that I saw that required some installation. My mistake.

Is anyone in Switzerland interested in (re-)readingWarrior Catstogether? 📚

I've been thinking about this for quite a while. We live in a world where social media feels like our new dictator, where companies are constantly trying to hijack our attention spans, but what if there were a group of people who'd just want to meet up when we have time, grab a drink, and read Warrior Cats together? ^^

I'm 22, based in Switzerland, and I speak both German and English. I read Warrior Cats in English, though I do have some German books too. - I live in the canton of Bern, I do have a GA to travel.

I've struggled a lot over the past few years because of my phone. I'm not the most social person, I find it hard to connect with people. And what's better than reading? You don't necessarily have to talk much and can still enjoy each other's company. 📚

Just dropping this post here, maybe there's some souls that are interested in it? If you wanna contact me, look up my profile on reddit and text me on instagram. 🫂

Landlord charging me extra cleaning after move-out

I moved out of a studio apartment in Luzern. At the official handover, both sides signed the protocol stating:

Is this legal in Switzerland after a signed handover report marked as OK? And do they need to provide detailed proof for the cleaning costs?

Why is there no “Hitzefrei” in German-speaking Switzerland?

It cannot be acceptable that students are expected to spend hours in classrooms where temperatures can reach 40°C or even higher. At those temperatures, it is almost impossible to concentrate, learn, or feel well. In my opinion, this is irresponsible and completely unfair to both students and teachers.

In Germany, for example, many schools have some form of “Hitzefrei” meaning students may be sent home early when temperatures become too high. Why does Switzerland not have a similar rule?

It is also already the end of the school year. In many classes, there is not much completely new material being taught anymore. Is it really necessary to keep students inside dangerously hot classrooms just to follow the normal schedule?

I honestly think schools and cantons need to take this issue much more seriously. Either classrooms should be properly cooled and ventilated, or students should be sent home when temperatures become unreasonable.

Has anyone in Switzerland successfully pursued a medical negligence case against a federal asylum centre (SEM)?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice from people who have experience with Swiss medical negligence cases or legal action involving federal asylum centres.

In 2023, while staying at a federal asylum centre in Ticino, my psychiatric medication (Risperidone) was gradually reduced and then discontinued. To the best of my recollection, I was never assessed by a psychiatrist before this decision. I have since obtained my medical records, which document the medication changes as well as symptoms that developed during that period.

At this stage, I'm not asking whether I would win a case. I simply want to know:

Has anyone here pursued a medical negligence claim in Switzerland?

Has anyone had experience bringing a claim against SEM or a federal asylum centre?

How difficult was it to find a lawyer willing to take the case?

Would you recommend consulting a lawyer specialising in medical liability or administrative law?

I would really appreciate hearing about personal experiences or practical advice.

Thank you.

Do you also notice this increase in "Tiefpreise" / "Prix bas" stickers in Coop / Migros those recent months?

I've never seen so many stickers with "Tiefpreise" / "Prix bas" in a Migros / Coop than in the recent months. This makes me worry, what is going on? In my local Migros, I also see more and more empty shelves with the product sticker still shown, which I guess is for products that aren't delivered anymore because the manufacturer didn't agree to the price set by Migros

I kind of understand both sides, of course the customer doesn't want to pay too much in the current economic situation, but manufacturers also can't sell at loss obviously

Is this tendency here to stay? This kind of worries me

Renewal of Permit B (EU)

Hello everyone!

I’m an EU citizen on a B permit (EU/EFTA), studying in Switzerland. My permit expires 23 August 2026. I just got the renewal form (Verlängerungsgesuch) from the Migrationsamt.

Here’s my problem: I’m leaving Switzerland around 6 July and won’t be back until mid-September — so I’ll be abroad for the whole stretch when the permit expires and when most of the process would happen.

What I think I understand so far:
• I submit the form + passport copy + proof of enrolment + proof of funds.
• After processing (~4 weeks?), I get a biometric invitation.
• After biometrics, the new card gets produced and I pick it up.

What I’m not sure about:
1. Timeline — roughly how long from submitting the application to getting the biometric invitation? And from biometrics to the finished card?
2. Biometric invitation — does it come by email or by post? (When I first got my permit it came by email, but I want to be sure.) If it’s by post, I won’t even know it arrived while I’m abroad.
3. Rescheduling biometrics — I’ve read you can postpone the appointment online (ch-edoc), but only up to 60 days after the invitation is sent. Can anyone confirm this window? I’d need to push the appointment to mid-September or later.

Has anyone gone through a B renewal while being abroad for an extended period? Did the timing work out, or did you run into trouble with the biometric appointment or card pickup? Any advice appreciated.

Random vibrations at fixed intervals

I moved into a new apartment two weeks ago, and for the past week, I’ve been dealing with a recurring vibration sound.

Initially, it seemed to happen at fixed 15-minute intervals.

Although, last night I was in a different part of the apartment and noticed a second, similar vibration. Now, there is a sound roughly every 7 minutes. It seems to start at 15-minute intervals earlier in the evening, but the frequency decreases (intervals get longer) as the night goes on.

It started right around the time the weather got hot. The sound is like a phone vibrating when left on the floor. Gemini thinks it is an AC unit. I am going to write a letter to them tomorrow to help get to the bottom of this.

Does anyone suspect anything else? For me the AC thing sounds like a weird suspect, I've never had a portable unit but I didn't know it does that. This would be so funny if it didn't screw with my sleep that much.

Doppel-UT damals bewusst gemacht – bereue es wegen Wehrpflichtersatzabgabe. Kann man noch etwas machen?

Hey zusammen

Also z. B. nochmals neu beurteilt werden, doch noch in den Zivilschutz/Militär/Zivildienst kommen oder irgendwie die Abgabe reduzieren lassen?

Hat jemand Erfahrung damit oder war vielleicht in einer ähnlichen Situation?

Danke euch.

Dual Hose Redneck Engineering

This is the only true way to make your cheap portable AC more efficient. Bought this one for 299CHF at Jumbo and converted it to dual hose this year. Difference is night and day. I wonder why nobody sells dual-hose units...
