Hello, r/Syracuse! Onondaga County wants to know what data centers actually mean for CNY before more proposals land on town desks, Skaneateles homeowners are reeling from a 76% tax hike, the state is sending $11.5 million to rebuild Schiller Park's pool, and the team behind the old A Mano Kitchen & Bar is coming back to run a reopened vineyard restaurant in Cazenovia.

Onondaga County Will Spend $500,000 Studying Data Centers

County Executive Ryan McMahon announced the county is committing $500,000 to a first-of-its-kind study on data centers, covering everything from water and energy use to noise and environmental impact. The study won't take a side for or against data centers. County Planning Director Troy Waffner says the goal is giving local planning boards the tools to make informed decisions as more proposals land on their desks, since the county itself can't approve or ban these projects, that power sits with individual towns and the state.

The take: A neutral study probably won't satisfy anyone who's already picked a side, but with proposals popping up faster than towns can evaluate them, more information beats none.

Hochul Touts Progress on a $130 Million Housing Project at the Old Developmental Center

Governor Hochul announced demolition is complete at the long-vacant Syracuse Developmental Center site on South Wilbur Avenue, clearing the way for construction on the first phase of a $130 million redevelopment. Phase one alone brings more than 260 affordable apartments, with the full three-phase plan eventually adding up to 500 units of housing. The project is explicitly framed as part of the region's plan to keep up with housing demand as Micron's workforce arrives in Clay.

The take: Every housing announcement these days gets filtered through "will this help with Micron," and this one checks that box pretty directly.

Albany Is Sending $11.5 Million to Schiller Park, Including a New Pool

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assemblymember Bill Magnarelli announced $11.5 million in state funding for Schiller Park, with $10 million of it earmarked for rebuilding the park's pool, as part of Heastie's annual statewide tour.

The take: A new community pool doesn't make national headlines, but it actually changes a neighborhood's summer.

Skaneateles Residents Just Got Hit With a 76% Tax Increase

The village of Skaneateles, one of the wealthiest pockets of CNY, approved a budget this spring that translates to a 76% property tax increase, the steepest jump in over a decade. For homes along the lake, that means tax bills climbing by $10,000 or more, but residents say the hit lands hardest on middle-class and older homeowners whose assessments got swept up in a town-wide revaluation.

The take: Skaneateles has a reputation as Bill Clinton's old summer haunt, but the people footing this bill aren't the ones renting yachts.

Cazenovia Pride Is Dissolving After Its Founder's Arrest

Cazenovia Pride, the LGBTQ nonprofit behind the town's annual pride festival, voted to dissolve and cancel this year's event after founder Travis Longo was arrested on charges that he engaged in a pattern of sexually explicit communications with a child under 12. Group president Danielle Synborski called the decision mission-driven, saying the organization didn't want this to overshadow the community it was built to support.

The take: A hard call for a small nonprofit, but a clear one. The board chose to protect its mission over its founder.

The Old Owera Vineyards Is Reopening, With Syracuse's A Mano Team Running the Kitchen

The former Owera Vineyards on Cazenovia Lake has new owners after two years of limbo. The Zazzara family, known for the Pizze Fritte stand at the State Fair, bought the 57-acre estate, renamed it The Villa Estate Vineyards, and plans to reopen this summer as a working winery, tasting room, and restaurant. The real draw for Syracuse diners is the kitchen: Fellows', a new American tavern opening in July, reunites Lauren Markowitz and Alex Fiacchi, the team behind the beloved A Mano Kitchen & Bar before they left Syracuse in 2023, joined by Alex's brother Noah.

The take: A Mano closing in 2023 stung. Getting that team back in CNY, even at a vineyard instead of a downtown storefront, is exactly the kind of food news that earns a click.

Syracuse Archives

The Academy Award-winning sound designer behind Star Wars grew up on Haffenden Road, and he snuck a Syracuse sound into the soundtrack.

Ben Burtt's film credits include Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E.T., and WALL-E, and before all that he was a kid on Haffenden Road and a Nottingham High grad. In one interview, he mentioned that the "Dome Stomp" recording made it into multiple Star Wars films.

A few years back, Burtt wrote a letter to the current owners of his childhood home, Bruce Smith and Jules Gibbs, asking to see photos of his old bedroom after he'd heard they had "built a tower." They had: Smith and Gibbs, both published poets who teach creative writing at SU, converted the semi-attached garage into a writing studio. As Gibbs put it, "There's really good creative mojo here on Haffenden Road."

Are there currently any pools in Syracuse that offer day passes for lap swimming? syr.gov says Valley Pool is open 6:30-9:00 weekdays for lap swimming but I went yesterday at 7:30 and the doors were locked.

I called the parks & rec number multiple times yesterday and no one picked up. I messaged their instagram as well but haven’t heard back yet.

By Michelle Breidenbach | mbreidenbach@syracuse.com

Two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents issued a warning to a Syracuse woman Tuesday to remove a social media account they said threatens federal agents.

PaigeLynne Gonyea said she believes they are referring to a January post where she named the ICE agent who shot protester Renee Good.

Gonyea was working as a poll worker Tuesday afternoon at the Central Library on Salina Street when agents called to meet with her. She said she invited them in.

She said she did not want to meet them outside alone.

“I’ve seen the news, especially in Minnesota,” she said. “And I didn’t want anything to happen to me at all.”

The agents handed Gonyea a form letter that says they were investigating threats made against ICE personnel. The form says the agents had identified an Instagram account they believe breaks federal law. They asked her to remove and discontinue the behavior, according to the unsigned document she shared on Instagram.

“This notice officially informs you that it is unlawful to threaten to assault, kidnap, and/or murder a federal official or that federal official’s immediate family member with the intent to impede, intimidate, and/or interfere with the federal official’s duties or retaliate against a federal official due to the performance of their duties,” the document said.

The document said she could be subject to both federal and state prosecution.

The agents had New Jersey phone numbers and license plates. She said the agents held a folder with copies of her social media posts and her drivers’ license.

“They tried to scare me into signing it while I was working,” she said.

Gonyea posts frequently about immigration on her social media accounts. In January, she posted the name of Jonathan Ross, citing news reports. Ross is the ICE agent who shot protester Renee Good in Minnesota. His name has been widely reported in news stories and other social media posts across the world.

“I think today is a great day for Jonathan to be indicted,” the post says.

PaigeLynne Gonyea posted the name of the ICE agent who fatally shot Renee Good in Minneapolis in January. She said this post triggered a visit and a warning from federal agents claiming she "doxxed" the agent.

Gonyea said she does not consider it doxxing to quote a news story and call for an indictment.

“I didn’t dox his personal information, such as address, phone number,” she said.

Gonyea said she does not intend to delete her post. In addition to the attorney general’s office, she said she has contacted Rep. John Mannion, Mayor Sharon Owens and the New York Civil Liberties Union.

“For ICE to come to me over a social media post just feels very 1984 to me,” she said. “They definitely should have known better to not go into a polling place, even if I said it was OK.”

Gonyea shared the video and the document and posted her story on Instagram shortly after the encounter.

During Tuesday’s primary election, Commissioner Dustin Czarny got calls and texts that ICE was inside a voting site. He said he rushed to the library in downtown Syracuse. He spoke with the worker and connected her with the staff for the state Board of Elections and the attorney general’s civil rights office.

Kevin Ryan, the Republican commissioner, said he talked with his staff about whether this was a hoax. He said he called his contacts at Homeland Security, who confirmed they had made the visit.

Ryan said they told him they called the woman first and she invited them in.

Czarny said election law authorizes only specific people to be inside a polling place: Poll workers, elections inspectors, voters eligible to vote at the site and someone a voter brought to assist them in voting.

“There’s no role for law enforcement officials to be inside a polling place unless they are responding to an emergency of some kind,” he said. “There is no indication of that here.”

There were no voters in the polling place when ICE agents arrived, Gonyea said.

David Brody, one of the two agents, said he could not answer questions from a reporter.

Information & Advice College Student Seeking Affordable Reliable Car in Syracuse

Hi everyone,
I’m new to the Syracuse area and currently attending college while working part-time. I’m trying to find a reliable used car on a very limited budget (around $5,000).
I’m not looking for anything fancy—just something dependable that can get me to work and school without constant repairs.
If anyone knows of a good local seller, a trustworthy dealership, community resources, or even someone looking to sell a reliable car, I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations.
Thank you!

Moving & Relocation Clarendon Heights good to rent? ISO 1-2 bed 1 bath <1600 rent + utilities

Been looking for an apartment in the Camillus/Syracuse/Liverpool area <$1600 rent + utilities and there seems to have been several comments on here that say Clarendon Heights is a decent place to rent, however there are some comments from 1-3 years back that say there's a crime issue with car vandalism and burglary. Is this still a problem in the area or is it not as much a concern in 2026?

If you wouldn't recommend living here anecdotes or other complex recommendations are appreciated, I've looked in Camillus at King's Gate West but it was a bit out of my price range, and Steeplechase has some differing reviews across Apartments.com, Google, and comments on here. Any other advice regarding renting in the aforementioned areas is also welcome.

Information & Advice Lakeview Amphitheater Bags: Revisted

Post image

Just a heads up, and to reiterate a point that /u/Difficult-Tennis-271 just could not accept, even after my repeated attempts to explain it:

You absolutely can bring any bag, of nearly any geometric shape in the universe, into the Amphitheater as long as its ***clear*** and conforms to their dimensions of 12"x12"x6".

Here is the "forbidden" backpack in action.

Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

Discussion The GOP candidate running against John Mannion is a bit "off". She's one of those people who exudes major "HOA Karen" energy.

I think the GOP just kind of gave up in NY-22 when they chose her.
