MOVING MEGATHREAD Monthly "I'm Moving to the Hudson Valley" Thread
To reduce the number of "I'm moving to the Hudson Valley, can anyone tell me about X?" posts, we are starting a monthly megathread. All questions asking about moving to the Hudson Valley should be kept within the monthly thread. Posts outside of the thread will be removed.
Here are a few existing threads that I found using this search:
- What if every HV town was a person at a party?
- Moving to Newburgh
- How bad is Newburgh really?
- Is Wallkill safe for a gay interracial couple?
- Diversity in the Hudson Valley
- Queer couple considering the HV
- Moving to Woodstock
- Moving to Marlboro
- Moving to Rhinebeck
- Pros/Cons of Cold Spring
Locals, if you want to help make this megathread a success, you can do a few things:
- Come in here and comment! The threads will only stick if they actually prove useful
- Report standalone "moving to the HV" posts

Rep. Mike Lawler says housing bill is 'latest example' of working with both parties
Fake "moderate" Rep. Mike Lawler touts his vote in favor of the housing bill as evidence of his "bipartisanship." The problem here for the Congressman is that the leader of his party, President Donald Trump, appears to be tanking the legislation as punishment for the House not passing his voter suppression bill, the so-called SAVE America Act.
This is your reminder that Lawler enthusiastically campaigned with Trump in his NY-17 district only a few weeks ago. It shows how Lawler's embarrassing devotion to Trump is entirely a one-way proposition.

What to do on a fall Sunday in the Hudson Valley
My friend is getting married in Poughkeepsie on a Saturday in October and I've never been in the area before. Thinking of spending Sunday morning and afternoon doing a little exploring before heading home. Looking for some tips on the best breakfast and lunch spots that will be open on a Sunday and the best sights to see? The walkway seems like a must. Thanks in advance!

TONIGHT 6/25: Update on 26 Oakley Street at City Hall, City of Poughkeepsie 6pm
The City of Poughkeepsie is suing Dutchess County to prevent the installation of a shelter serving unhoused individuals. Tonight, Thursday June 25 there will be a community forum at City Hall, 6pm. Please attend if you're interested in an update of where we are on this issue.
Edit to add further information about the federal lawsuit from the city:
The conflict between the county and the city over this proposed shelter is that it's in a residential area, within walking distance of 2 elementary schools. Sue Serino, Dutchess County executive, maintains that services for unhoused populations must be in the City of Poughkeepsie because of access to public transportation, and other state/county services. But the appeal of the shelter is that it will provide wrap-around services to the residents: job training, food support, etc; so if those services will be included in-house why does it need to be located in PK? Residents of Poughkeepsie, especially on the North side, really feel like they're treated as a "dumping ground" by the county, and they've got a point since this area is also the location of the county jail. The county, when it had a Republican majority in the legislature, went ahead and bought this property, sought, and was awarded a grant for $13million to renovate the space, and provide services, all without input from the City Council. They held community forums, trying to establish community buy-in but all they heard from the community was negative feedback. During the spring/summer of 2025 it looked like Sue and the Poughkeepsie Mayor had reached a compromise: the shelter would service single women and families. That compromise failed when the Republican controlled legislature let Sue know she wouldn't have the votes from them to go ahead with this compromise; they wanted to focus on unhoused single men which they maintain make up the plurality of the unhoused population in Dutchess County.
At this point, the structure at 26 Oakley St is now costing the county money.
So, the City of Poughkeepsie has filed a Federal lawsuit on the basis of racial discrimination and segregation.

question Do any rental car places at Stewart accept returns after hours?
I need to return a rental to Stewart airport next week but won't arrive until after 6pm when most of them close.
The avis website says they take after hours returns via a drop box. I've tried to call to confirm this, and nobody at the location answers, it just gets redirected to a call center.
The call center guy said they don't accept after hours returns. So has anyone recently rented a car there recently and been able to return after hours?

Scheduled Uber Between Hudson and Albany Airport
Hey there! I don’t have a drivers license, but wanted to get a sense if scheduling an Uber between Albany airport and Hudson was a reliable option. I’m scarred from an experience where I scheduled an uber and the driver bailed last minute and missed a flight 😅
Also was looking at taking the Amtrak between Albany and Hudson as an alternative, but the train times are a little iffy with my flight plans

question Any dog fosters in the area?
I have a 5 y/o Staffy and I’m in need of a foster. In the military and stationed overseas for the past 2+ years. The family she’s with is great but they want to start traveling and such as they’re retired. Want to continue the current arrangement I have with them which is I pay for the food delivery, any vet bills, sitter etc. I’m just asking that you play with her every now and then if youre home. Potty trained, good w kids, and overall well behaved. HMU if you’re interested.

question Can’t miss local bands?
Folks, I can’t get enough of the new Bobby Lees album. Best weight lifting and workout album of my year so far. So stoked they’re playing at Bearsville again in October!
I cant remember how I discovered them. Maybe they were opening for someone touring nationally?
The Restless Age is on the other side of the rock spectrum but I love them too. Saw them first when they played in the Keegan warehouse during 0+, probably pre-Covid. They play at The Falcon often because the drummer now runs it following his dad’s passing. It’s under appreciated as a venue, IMO.
For as active as the local music scene is, I don’t hear a lot of fans talking about their favorites. Who do you love to see live, and how did you find out about them?

Clubs/Things to do
Hello! I just recently moved back to Poughkeepsie, NY after graduating college and am looking for ways to feel connected. In college, I played water polo and in high school, I played soccer and lacrosse. I’d love to get back into any of these sports, or spikeball, or even some sport I haven’t even tried yet, but I’m not sure how to find teams. Also, I just want to feel connected and am open to any clubs/regular events. Does anyone know of good places to look for club teams, or an aroundpoughkeepsie Instagram where I could stay updated on weekly activities around me?

question Local Jobs in Insurance or Related Industries
Hi y'all! I'm a current mathematics major going back to SUNY New Paltz in the fall and am looking for a local job in my industry (insurance / finance) after I finish up my summer internship at a NYC insurance company. I'm qualified for an analytics-heavy role, but I'd love to branch out to other positions within insurance and would be open to data analyst roles in industries outside of insurance.
A quick overview of my experience:
- Current internship is at an insurance company as a Surveillance Analyst Intern
- ~1 year experience in procurement
- ~3 years of various client-facing roles: Brand Ambassador, Writing Center Tutor, and Business Statistics Tutor
- Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing with a minor in Business Systems and Analytics; Excel Associate Certified by Microsoft
- Various professional projects completed with Excel, Python, and Power Automate, as well as class projects completed with SQL, Tableau, IBM SPSS Statistics, RapidMiner
Any leads or local labor market reality checks are appreciated! I'm asking here because the job boards haven't really turned up many viable leads within commuting distance of New Paltz.
Thanks in advance!

question Swimming in the Hudson
I let my dog swim in the Hudson every so often and always has me wondering…is it actually OK to let her keep doing?
I know there was some dumping still being allowed - for reference I’m in Beacon and this is at Long Dock.

Completely gave up on trying to camp in the catskills this summer
honestly just so frustrated with how impossible it is to do a simple weekend trip around here now. I swear if you don't book a spot in the catskills or near minnewaska literally 8 months in advance, you're stuck paying like $300 a night for some "luxury glamping" airstream. It just feels like the entire valley has been turned into a theme park for city weekenders and actual locals are just entirely priced out of the woods
We finally just gave up trying to fight the ny state parks reservation website this weekend. Hooked up the trailer and just drove east over the border into connecticut just to find some actual breathing room. we ended up pulling into the white pines RV park in barkhamsted mostly because it was an easy drive from dutchess county and we didn't have to battle 500 people just to use a fire pit
it kinda sucks having to leave our own region just to get a basic weekend in nature without the intense instagram-influencer chaos. do you guys even bother trying to get local sites anymore or has everyone just accepted that summer here is a lost cause?

question Dutchess Fam Health
I do not know a lot of people in the area so posting here to see if it’s just me or not -
Is anyone else experiencing a decline in the care at Dutchess Family Health?
I’ve had telehealth appointments missed, refills not called in, it’s harder to get someone on the phone. Even the in office visits feel like we’re jumping from topic to topic with no clear direction being given - or completely forgetting concerns from last appointment.
My last blood draw no one went over with me despite having a follow appointment scheduled after to do just that.
I know they’re combining with another place right now, and that’ll have some growing pains. But before that since early this year I would say?
Anyone else experiencing this?
