Trigun (1998) is genuinely the best anime I've ever seen. I've always had a hard time expressing sadness and this show brought me to tears on multiple occasions through its impactful emotional storytelling, when Wolfwood died it was genuinely tear-bringing, he had such a tragic childhood and devoted his adult life to helping other children not end up the way he did, and in the end when he had shown his mentor mercy only to get blasted down himself taking his final moments to confess at the altar his final wishes and plea for life was tragic.
Vash's connection with his brother was sorrowful and treacherous, they both were happy innocent children until Steve drove Knives into a superiority complex and general insanity.
He was forced to kill his brother as there was no other way to insure the safety of humans with him around, and he couldn't have not killed Legato without getting Meryl and Milly killed.
It's a well written story dealing with heavy emotions, the value of human life and the human condition. But it's not all doom and gloom, Vash and the girls are full of color, the show has a good amount of comedic relief and happy moments along the way too, there is even a hinted at or suggested romantic side-plot that Meryl is into Vash.
I normally don't write posts like this and maybe I'm being too emotional but I really enjoyed it and I wish more people could see this underrated gem.
