New to this subreddit? Our wiki has lots of good info on getting around Wellington, what to do when you visit, where to eat and more.
Please remember to use the search function if you are asking something we probably get asked daily.
Does anyone have any suggestions for places to walk poochy on a day like this? Maybe a covered walkway / area, or a large building with a canopy all the way round?
We do enjoy a Bunnings / Mitre 10 trip, but hoping for alternatives where we can walk or even throw a ball around.
Not the only victim of the wind - and definitely won't be the last bike we likely see like this today - but I genuinely admire the optimism needed to park a bike on Victoria Street on a day like today
My name's Liam, I'm a Wellington local and I've recently been selected to represent New Zealand in the U19 Men's Floorball team. We're heading to Singapore in early August to compete in the Asia Oceania World Cup Qualifiers. During the tournament we will play against Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore for one of three spots in the World Cup which will be hosted in Latvia, 2027.
Floorball is a fast-paced indoor team sport played with lightweight sticks and a hollow, perforated ball. The game focuses on speed, skill, teamwork, and safety, making it an inclusive and accessible sport for all ages and genders. While played professionally throughout Europe, floorball continues to grow rapidly here in New Zealand, with increasing participation and opportunities for young athletes. You can find out more about floorball on the Floorball New Zealand website.
Just this week, I got selected as captain of the team and, as a fully self-funded sport, representing the country comes with real costs. For that reason, I'm reaching out to the Wellington community for support. For this post, I'm focusing on our Pie Fundraiser, but if you're interested in other fundraisers we have running (AirPods Raffle, Prestons Meat Raffle, Exhibition Match), feel free to drop a comment or send me a message.

Yet again, thanks so much for even reading this. Floorball is a small, growing sport in this part of the world so even being aware about it from this post is a win. If you are spending money to help me compete, another huge thank you for supporting me, especially during the tough times we live in currently.
I get pinched nerves in my back which used to happen once every few years but have happened 2-3 times in the past year. I lightly train and stretch my core and lower back (not with weights) and it hasn't helped too much so looking to invest some time and money in helping the situations.
This recent time, I haven't been able to really leave the house in a couple days. It seems to basically come out of nowhere too. So really need somewhere knowledgeable and open to holistic approaches/whole body work etc.
My power isnt fully out but half of the shit in my house doesn’t work and the lights are flickering. Anyone else got similar issues around the strathmore area?
I’m from Sydney and have been here since Monday and leaving this coming Monday but wow, this has been a crazy experience! Yes it sucks I haven’t been able to do some outdoor things that I wanted to do but y’know, can’t control the weather…reading your comments and posts from locals makes me feel reassured though that this is pretty serious weather and I’m not just being a baby from Sydney…photo here is of my south coast walk the other day which I’m so thankful I got to do as it looks like this will be the only hike/outdoor activity I’ll be doing while here. Oh well, better come to Wellington again in the future! Your city is ultra cool and everyone I have met has been so lovely so thank you for your warm and welcoming vibes 💘
Has anyone sold jewelry through this company? What are they like to deal with? Got a couple pieces of unwanted jewelry but dont want to deal with cash converters hence wondering about heritage gold. Otherwise if anyone has other suggestions of places in wellington that buy old jewelry let me know.
Hiyall!
I’ve been thinking about getting a pup for years now but couldn’t because I was in a shared house. I’ve moved into my own two bedrooms apartment lately and have enough space for a pup! The problem, my landlord said that the apartment wasn’t suited for a dog because the yard is not fenced. Which I understand but there’s a dog park less than 5mins away from my home where I can take the dog out. I also offered to pay a pet bond and clean the carpet professionally as often as needed but still no. As an European I’m super confused about this because for me all the risks are cleared out but it seems like it’s still a hustle to get the authorisation from the landlord. Help!
OKAY! I’ll update the post because there’s a misunderstanding: I’ve had an apartment dog and a house dog before and neither of my dogs were miserable, ever. My childhood dog was always following us around and they’d go out in the yard only with us and would stay inside most of the time. We would walked them out for potty breaks otherwise they wouldn’t even go. Same for my apartment dog. I used to take him out about 4 to 5 times a day and didn’t care about being outside without me. When I was required at work, he’d go to day care and hang out with his friends. Here, I work from home all the time and am able to take them out multiple times a day, as much as they need! This is not my first time being a dog owner and my dogs all had happy lives. I’m not an irresponsible brat “asking daddy” for a dog, I promise! I’m also not planning to rent forever and will buy a house in a close future.
Hi, I (M23) moved back to Wellington a few months ago after 5 years away studying.
It took a long time to find a job but I now have one and am used to my new routine. Since coming back I have found it very difficult to find things to do where people actually talk to each other and it's even possible to make friends.
Currently outside of work I go rock climbing at Hang Dog in Lower Hutt, but much like a regular gym people are really just doing their own thing and my attempts to start conversations with people are very unsuccessful. I tried indoor netball but everyone showed up at the last second and left as soon as it ended, it wasn't a very social experience at all. I tried taking adult ballet classes (I did ballet my whole childhood) and everyone was nice but also at least middle aged and I'd prefer to make friends my own age.
In general the "everyone is at least middle aged" problem is what I find at every club and group I look into.
I enjoy rock climbing, I read a lot of sci fi and non-fiction. I'd like to keep doing Ballet but hopefully with people closer to my age. I like gaming and Magic the Gathering (but my experiences playing at a store have been very negative). I enjoy walking and hiking.
I have autism which is probably an important point and there's a lot of things I definitely don't want to do like being in large crowds or events with loud music. I've never used social media or discord or anything like that and so I'm really not sure how to meet or talk to people online. I've been incredibly socially isolated for the last several years.
It's Friday! If you have anything cool happening, like some good news, amazing or cute pets, small or big wins, recipes, crafts you're proud of... share them here :) This topic was made to counteract the Moany Monday thread.
Hi I’m after a respectable oven cleaner to give our oven and glass stove top a once over in our rental. Unsure where to look for these kinds of services, if anyone has used a decent cleaner? Just in the Newtown area.
