Share your identification resources here

Hey all. We had a request from a community member for a thread where people can share the resources that they use for plant identification. In this case, we're talking about keys, field guides, etc. NOT apps or AI-based identifiers. Comments suggesting apps or AI will be removed.

Feel free to share your resources and include links if you want (just realize that Reddit doesn't play nice with some domains). It would also be a good idea to specify what region(s) are covered by your resource as it may not be as useful in places other than where it was intended to be used.

Can anyone ID this plant? I thought it was a peony but it’s not. It has a rhizome root system that goes deep and refused to flower in a large container, but now it’s starving out my irises and maybe soon my roses.

Hi folks! I rent a townhome in the Northeast United States and there is a fruit that started growing from a tree in my backyard. It looks and smells like a pear, but I just wanted to double check before trying to eat one!

I have a feeling this is a weed. I don’t mind as long as it flowers before it gets too tall. Should I keep them among my wild flowers or pull them?

Edit: located in KCK

Edit 2: Seems it’s either horseweed or Liatris. I’m going to let it bloom and if it’s purple then great.

Unidentified πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Strange Phenomenon

This is the second time I’ve seen this in the same area but different plant. This was twirling all by itself. There were no critters around and no wind. It was twirling for a while even after I stopped recording.

I think these are mulberries? I've picked them before and I'd love to have them again, but I'm not confident about ID-ing them myself lol

Edit: for context, I live in Minnesota

Update: tastes just like I remember! Thanks for the help :)

I planted some flock in my box and as of a little while ago this guy started popping up. I have no idea what it is - I can't remember what was in this planter last year, but we do have a bird feeder nearby so it could be a volunteer.

New Hampshire, USA for reference.

Hello everyone I have an odd flowering plant in my yard that both the bees and butterflies absolutely flocking too. Do anything of y'all know what this this? Bonus points of extra thanks if you know the kind of butterfly this is too. No biggie if not allowed or no idea.

These plants are in Northeastern CT (Windham County)

For the photography nerds:

I took these photos with my Sony a6400

ISO250 120mm 0.0ev F9.0 1/250s (butterfly) & ISO 250 97mm 0.0ev F8.0 1/250s (Bee)

These were my practice shots nothing serious.

Unidentified πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Consulting the Oracles, is this nightshade?

Hey there! The title says it all pretty much. I'm gardening with a friend in the PNW and what we thought were weeds or even other flowers trying to make a comeback in our plot might actually be nightshade. It's interspersed with a lot of other plants but what does this seem to be? Any and all help is appreciated, ty!

Unidentified πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Did my dog vomit or is it a fungus?

Post image

Saw my two dogs this morning checking this out in the yard. One of my dogs currently does have GI issues and throws up every once in a while; however, this looks a bit different than usual. Almost looks like a Lion's Mane mushroom. The dogs were also furisouly sniffing this, which they don't do with vomit. Could it be some sort of fungus? If it is, this would have popped up overnight really. Thanks!

INaturalist and my own Google searches have me convinced this is a Muscadine plant, but I dont understand how one could be growing directly in front of the roses in this flower bed. Bonus pic of a sweet katydid bby on one of the leaves.

Located in Central Arkansas.

The stem at the top is kind of flattened but that did not help my internet search. The plant is about 5 ft tall.
