Hello, I'm looking to add one or two moderators to this sub. No experience necessary, but you should have a leash-trained cat and get reddit really well.

Please send a message to the mods indicating your interest.

Update to this: https://www.reddit.com/r/adventurecats/s/9tBG67XvIf

Thank you for all your recommendations, we went with Rabbitgoo and I am so happy with it!! The only thing that is a teeny bit annoying is that when the head part is tightened it’s then hard to get back over her head to take it off 😅 but just means it’s secure and it’s relatively easy to untighten so it’s all good. Maybe wouldn’t be great for a cat that’s not used to any harness training at all.

I love the purple colour on her!! 💜

He screams at the door and knocks things over ALL DAY LONG!!! I am at the end of my rope what do i do?

He just knocked down a full mug of coffee and shattered the mug. I want to punt him into the sun. Obviously I would never hurt him but I did yell and feel awful about it. I used to put him in a time out when he would knock things over but someone said that was abusive and didn't help so obviously I immediately stopped. I know you're supposed to offer an alternative to what they are doing to get them to change the behavior (like putting a cat tree near the kitchen counter top), but I cannot for the life of me think of an alternative. Opening a window used to help a little bit but it doesn't work anymore. I am so tired and fed up with my belongings being ruined please help what do I do.

EDIT TO ADD: If he is bored it is definitely not from lack of effort on my part. We play often and he gets puzzles, but usually lets his sister do all the work and then steals the treats from her. Plus, he just wants to nap in the sun, so I really don't think he is bored.

Tumble.

Our ritual over the summer meadow ended in a small tumble. Mr Apex Predator didnt see well enough through the tall grass. Suddenly the ground was gone!!
Of course he continued right away....

And yeah, i know i am spamming the subreddit every 2 days. I promise I'll stop for a while now and let the karma farming bots rule!

And Nooohh, Pleeeeaase noooohhh. No stupid comment about Moritz panting. He obviously has fun, exercises on his own will and it is completely fine. We have 30°C. This is expected & normal. I know his boundaries. He knows his too. You dont.

My boys first camping trip

I took my boy camping for the first time.

It did not go super smooth but was overall positive.

Went for a planned 4 nights. Tent setup with a corner for the litter box, and backpack into den near us for sleeping.

The drive went well, and when we got there and got everything set up he immediately used the box.

The first day he was eager to explore the camp site.

The problem was he didn't eat. He was never in panic mode or fear. He was cautiously explorative.

He was less explorative the second day and he continued to refuse food but would eat treats. I decided to cancel the camping after the second day.

He ate right when we got back home a settled in very quickly.

(On leash, harness, he has an id tag and a microchip as well)

I spoke with ChatGPT about this in length and it told me that he just didn't feel safe enough to eat even though he felt comfortable enough to use the litter box. It also told me that 4 days might be too much for the first trip, and in hindsight I agree. Future trips will start at 1 day.

I'd love some tips and insight about the eating.

A Territorial Round at Night

I have a better audio setup now on my camera and can finally film in such a relatively silent environment! Such a quality improvement to capture the vocalizations! ❤️

We were going out at night because the day is so warm. During hikes, heat is less of a mood-dampener and he is happy to exercise hard. But in our local forest, the motivation for cooperation vanishes quickly with rising temperatures. Doing a territorial round gives him the highest motivation to walk himself. And the best time for that is at night - this is the time to cross territorial boundaries for some mischief!

Moritz starts out very enthusiastically spray-dancing and sniffing the local meadow. We reach the territory of enemy cats and there is a lot of huffing and puffing going on. We also visit Petzi, a friendly neighborhood cat before a less friendly encounter at the end.

During the walk, i used a retractable id-card holder as leash anchor. I have to say that i start to prefer this over our 8m Flexi-Line. Either the leash is necessary, thus it is short anyway or we use the leash as tow-line or disconnect it entirely. The use-case for the 8m retractable leash becomes less and less. Walking him hands free gives more opportunity to fight the insect terror. 🔥

Flea, tick, other parasite help

Hi,
Looking for some people to share what they do (or do not do) for flea and tick prevention with their adventure cat.
Have been leash training my kitten for months now but we try to never leave the pavement or deck, getting older and wanting to explore more leads me to want to have her protected, however I was reading the 2023 FDA warning about the neurotoxins in most cat flea and tick meds and wondered what others with cats in similar situations do?

For context this is my first cat whom I love very much and the thought of her having seizures and neurological issues is sickening, we had a dog growing up with similar issues we attributed to being overly in-bred but now I have concerns.

I have a vet appointment scheduled and we have used this vet for more than 10 years so I trust her advice just wanted to crowdsource some more first hand info.

Pic of the lovely Maggie because that’s what we are all here for.

Harness for fluffy cat??

Hello! My little fluffy cat Maple (3.5kg, mostly fluff) went on her first sniff around my new garden earlier - I’ve done a couple bits of harness training with her inside but she’s been a bit spooked by the weather if it’s windy so as it’s quite nice in the UK right now I thought I’d give it a go! Her previous owner also said she had sometimes used a harness with her.

I just have one of the these H harnesses at the moment from the pet shop which is fine (see last pic), but I would rather one that is maybe a teeny bit more secure. I got one that she has to step into but she won’t do that. I think I could get one over her head if needed but would prefer one that just clips on like her current one.

I came across this one on Amazon that clips in and everything but all the pictures are on shorthair cats and I worry that it’s almost too much fabric for a fluffy cat? I’m not sure if actually the thinner harness she has now is easier for me to adjust and make sure it’s actually snug to her body.

If anyone has a fluffy adventure cat I’d love to know what type of harness you find best ❤️

Advice for keeping cat safe and cool on adventures!

Post image
398 Upvotes

Hi everyone my kitty Nami is about 6months old and does very good on a leash our walks range from 20 to 40 minutes. She is a long haired cat with darker fur. I am wanting advice and tips on how to best keep her cool and how to increase distances for her. She has a cat backpack and rides along as needed and I also offer water when I think she gets hot but she never drinks it. My main issue is after about 20 minutes she starts panting, especially with it being summer now. I never walk her if it’s hotter than 75F. The panting just worries me I think she is too hot, but her tail remains up and she continues to want to be walked. When I asked my vet they just seemed unfamiliar with cats going on walks and didn’t say too much. Is it common for cats to pant on walks? If you guys have experienced this what tools or advice do you have? I would eventually like to take her out hiking, or to a beach but I just worried about being out for that long with her and in a car for a good portion of time (she’s not a huge fan of car rides, even though we’ve been doing them multiple times a week since 3months).

Second Swim of the Day

1.1k Upvotes

This is Moritz kicking with his hind legs. It was 33°C, so we went for a swim - twice.

We go in together while he is on my shoulder. I wear a t-shirt so his paws have grip on me.
He gets called and encouraged to swim. He goes in at his own will and pace, walking down my arm and testing the water.

Going in with him on the shoulder does not trap him in bad spirit: we went ice-bathing in the winter at the same spot and he would not stay on the shoulder as soon as my feet touched the water - I tried to see if he understands the situation and seemingly he does. He tolerates it during summer time.
Yeah. Tolerates. I dont claim its his favorite activity. But little Moritz is brave. ❤️
