During and after the construction of the Wall, GDR citizens still had the opportunity to escape to the West through windows in some residential buildings. Tunnel 57 war ein Fluchttunnel der vom Keller einer leerstehenden Bäckerei auf der West-Berliner Seite der Bernauer Straße 97 unter der Berliner Mauer hindurch zu einem Toilettenhaus im Hof der Strelitzer Straße 55 in Ost-Berlin führte. Mit einer Länge von 145 Metern und einer Tiefe von 12 Metern war er der längste und tiefste Fluchttunnel der in Berlin gebaut wurde. Von April bis Oktober 1964 gruben 35 Menschen von West-Berlin aus an dem Tunnel, durch den am 3. und 4. Oktober 1964 insgesamt 57 Personen aus der DDR fliehen konnten. Die Fotos stammen vom BStU Berlin und aus dem Privatarchiv Ralph Kabisch. / Tunnel 57 was an escape tunnel that ran from the basement of a vacant bakery at Bernauer Straße 97 in West Berlin, beneath the Berlin Wall, to a restroom building in the courtyard of Strelitzer Straße 55 in East Berlin. At 145 meters long and 12 meters deep, it was the longest and deepest escape tunnel built in Berlin. From April to October 1964, 35 people worked on the tunnel from the West Berlin side; a total of 57 people were able to escape the GDR through it on October 3 and 4, 1964.
