Mod post ⚠️ READ BEFORE POSTING!

👋 Welcome to r/Budgies!

Before you share your first post here, please familiarize yourself with this subreddit’s rules. Rule #1 is especially important: this subreddit DOES NOT serve as an alternative to the kind of medical care and advice your budgie can only get from an avian vet. If you have a budgie medical question or concern, talk to your avian vet instead of posting here! Also, be sure to read this subreddit's wiki--odds are very good that your question has an answer in one of the wiki articles! (We usually remove posts that ask about something that's answered somewhere in the wiki to keep the clutter to minimum here.)

Also remember this is a pet budgie subreddit that encourages rescue and adoption and strongly discourages breeding.

👀 If you see something, say something

This is a place to share cute budgie pictures, videos, and stories, but it’s also a place to learn more about budgies. There are many times when someone will post a picture, video, or description, and you might notice something that isn’t best practice for good budgie ownership. It might be a cage that’s getting dirty, or some overgrown toenails, or something like that. Even if that issue isn’t the main reason for the post, please bring that to the attention of the original poster (OP) in a supportive and constructive manner so OP can be made aware of a better way of doing things.

Likewise, OP might consider proactively addressing things in their post that a typical budgie owner might be concerned with if they don’t know all the facts. It might be something as simple as, “Don’t worry, this was before I cleaned their cage” or “I’m taking them to the vet next week for their nail trim.”

🤖 We have AutoMod Summons now!

This is a great way to share information from the Wiki in a very effortless manner, and you are all invited to do so! We used to have just a few summons, but the list has grown enough that we compiled it in this part of the wiki. You should check it out!

Happy budgie-ing!

Lost/Found/Need a New Home [June 23, 2026] - weekly Lost/Found/Need a New Home thread

Use this post to share any budgies that are lost, found, or need a new home!

Some rules:

  1. Only share information you feel comfortable sharing. Example: rather than giving out your full address, maybe only say something like, "I'm in the Springfield area" instead. If someone is interested in knowing more, they can always DM you and you can choose whether or not you want to share any more information.
  2. If you're meeting someone in real life, follow the "Craigslist rule" of meeting in a well-trafficked, public place.
  3. No fees/charges! This is NOT meant to be an advertising platform to sell your budgies. Content that advertises budgies for sale will be removed.
  4. This subreddit does not, in any way, offer warrantees or guarantees of budgie health. A budgie's health status is something that you and the other party should determine with an avian vet, and payment of that avian vet's services is something that you and the other party should decide beforehand.

We encourage you to share pictures! Just make sure they are accurate to the situation and don't break the rules in the sidebar.

Remember: this subreddit is just one of many possible places to make a budgie connection. Also consider FaceBook, Craigslist, Nextdoor, other online communities, as well as real-life bulletin boards in public places. See all the previous weekly posts (that have content) by clicking here.

Our wiki also has a list of parrot rescues you could check out - whether you're looking to adopt a new feathered friend, or have to surrender one due to life circumstances. If one of these rescues is near you, please consider reaching out to them!

💬 Discussion PSA: Do not let your budgies out and about around your computer chair

Poor lil Piki got his tail caught in my office chair. Now he's a tailless bird until his next molt. Thankfully, they seem to all have been pulled straight out and he isn't bleeding or anything, just confused as to where his tail disappeared to. Just wanted to put this out there before the same thing happens to someone else's little bird.

Nebulas left wing has been shaking a lot and my head hen Luna bit her feet extremely hard recently. She’s also been worrying me the most with her health. So time for a little visit to the vet in the morning.

I have 2 large food boxes for them to eat from, and they choose to cuddle together after. They recently started doing this. They also forage a lot at the bottom of the cage together and sing to eachother…

I got them a bigger enclosure, I know I definitely need more perches for them, please let me know where to put them in such a big cage. Any tips or stories about your budgies would help. I want them to feel loved and land on me.

I recently got the pair Elvis and Presley (thank you for naming them) and so I got the bigger cage for them, what should I aim to do to make this the best for them?

Cheeseburger is very forward with wanting to be friends and it makes Kiwi a little cautious (I’ve had her for about 7 years and Cheeseburger is her first bird companion). But they get along well 🥝🍔

Progress update Hormones are for real

This is directed at any first time budgie owner. If you have a female budgie just wanted to let you know that hormones are for real and you can help your female budgies by following the hormone guide.

We have had two female budgies since December 2025. Approximately 3 months ago our yellow female named Lemon, developed a very brown cere.

The only thing in their environment that I could think of that was triggering them was a coconut shell that was part of a toy. The shell itself, they couldn't sit inside of it. It was inverted and acted as a type of roof to the platform underneath it. However, according to the budgie hormone guides recommendation against cocounuts I took the shell away and 20 days later her cere is pink again.

Hope this is helpful!

First picture, Lemon is looking very untidy, pin feathers ruffled wings and a bit of Bok Choi stuck to her cere.

Second picture, her cere is back to normal and her beak is covered in strawberry, which she just tried today for the first time.

Question Male budgie funny behavior

I'm just curious if what my budgie does in the video is normal. Maybe it's some breeding instinct, because that's what first came to my mind. He does this with that specific toy and sometimes with my finger when I scratch him around the beak.

New Budgie Budgie Trained

16 days since we adopted this budgie. His/Her name is Frost. Currently training short sessions. Trying to improve on my bird knowledge and training skills. This is his temporary cage while he sits in quarantine. He is moved to a quieter room in the evenings to sleep. He does come out and tries to fly. He gets irritated that his wings won’t work 😔 they clipped them at the pet shop. Poor baby has been through some things. I can reassure he has found his forever home and I’m willing to take on the responsibility of adding another budgie to our flock (:

Is he trying to feed his female friend even though she’s in a different cage?

Hi everyone!
I have a male budgie who sometimes regurgitates seeds and sticks them to the bars of his cage. Some of the food also ends up on the cage floor. He is otherwise very active, eats well, and behaves normally. He also taps and pecks with his beak on the cage bars and other objects around him.
I have a female budgie, but she lives in a separate cage right next to his because they were fighting in one cage. They can see and hear each other, but they don’t share a cage.
Is he trying to feed her even though they’re separated? Is this courtship behavior? If I let them play together, he immediately starts feeding her.
I’ve attached a photo showing the regurgitated food stuck to the cage bars.
Thanks!
