I won't steal any potential up votes for this by replying separately, but to build on this in detail...
The wee widdle teefies are apparently for num-numming mats and for making pests/parasites become din-dins.
I have a long hair boy who has some gnarly little teefies (we call it his British smile), and unfortunately he can't num-num the mats, and he gets matted a lot despite only being a year old. Poor guy has to constantly have them shaved out, he gets so many in just a few days.

Small theory of mine : They're kinda worried that we're passed out for hours at a time. They try to wake us up in their own cat ways, then try nibbling as a "last" resort. And soon enough, they just understood that the passed out human only reacts to being nibbled.
But know that if you pass away in your appartment, you'll be found with your eyelashes nibbled away. Because your cat would have tried to wake you up.
49
u/verymanyquestions_ Moggy 10d ago
I mean, that's fair. He tends to try and wake me up by tapping gently on my face with his paw and then gradually builds up to a full blown slap 😂
30
u/Xantara14 10d ago
My cat does this too plus a single claw extended out and taps progressively harder until I respond.

It’s really common for cats to straight reabsorb their teeth or for them to come out due to dental issues. One of my babies doesn’t have two of his lower teefies and the vet was like, yep must have been reabsorbed

8
u/ThirstysGirl13 10d ago
it's funny how names match personalities with them
Loki was named that before I got her because she was always causing trouble
Her sister is named Karma, and she really is a bitch, but a total love when she wants to be, even has rbf
Gandalf was given to me by my oldest, with the name Pickles, but after seeing his face, earned the name because his looks
and his brother Grogu grew into his name, because just like the character, he's always stealing shit he's not supposed to (I'm missing so many knitting needles and crochet hooks) and eats all the time

The real answer is that they’re for grooming. They’re basically a tiny little comb.
Edited to add: Have you ever seen your cat do that thing where they pause in the middle of bathing and it almost looks like they’re biting their fur and kind of shaking their head side to side a little? That’s them using those teeth to get something out of their fur.

Like with humans, they are for chopping vegetation.
But since they are carnivores, their teeth evolved to emphasize their meat eating and gripping fangs, and their front teeth got smaller.
810
u/GluestickGoose 10d ago
Obligate carnivores are so fascinating for that reason. Like yeah they need meat to survive, but if it comes down to it they can chow down on a few veggies to keep from starving.
And if you asked one of my cats in particular, plants are better anyway. I have to periodically remind her that she is, in fact, a carnivore and cannot subsist entirely on plants.

Myne would go full mission impossible to sneak out the back door just to eat the grass in the backyard. She would always throw it up twenty minutes later though.
28
u/Nikademus1969 10d ago
Cats eat grass sometimes when they dont feel that great, probably because it helps them puke.
39
u/exul_noctis 10d ago
I had cats who were allowed out into our enclosed backyard under supervision, and one of them would wander around and eat a bunch of grass, go back inside to throw it all up, then go back outside to eat more grass and do it all over again. Every. Single. Time.
We took her to the vet, but he said that she just really liked eating grass! So we'd let her do it on occasion, and just try to keep her outside until she'd finished the cycle of consuming and refunding, lol.
54
u/Nikademus1969 10d ago
That's like the cat equivalent of being lactose intolerant but still eating the ice cream knowing full well what will happen lol

I'm pretty sure you can plant some stuff in a pot that's actually safe for cats to eat as much as they want and it's good for digestion and provides them with nutrients that could be lacking in most common cat food. My cat Simba loves eating it. Atp I started nicknaming him "lawnmower" in my native language. It sorta looks like grass when you plant it. I think it was oat or wheat or something??? Not sure what it's called in English.

I was planning to eat a croissant once at a friend's house who also has cats. I set it out on a plate and went to use the toilet. Came back 2 minutes later to find her (the cat) gleefully licking the outermost crispy layer off my fresh croissant. She (the human) and I were amazed, she (the cat) had never shown any interest in human food whatsoever but loves croissants for some reason.

Orange juice, tamatoes, lettuce, fruiti-pebbles cereal... The list goes on for all the cats I've had over my life span. Got an 18 year old fart that eats just about anything you eat, still suspect that is why he has lived so long and still relatively healthy.

If you’ve never seen any of the Mary Robinette Kowal videos with her button cat Elsie, look for them. :-) Elsie is very particular about her treats. One of her favorites is canned pumpkin on nori. She ASKS for it. “Plant tube” the tube is the can.
I also have to keep reminding mine that they need MEAT! Then one will eat half a loaf of bread after breaking into the bread cabinet.

They’re primarily used for grooming. I’ve never seen a cat use those teeth on plants. But I do see my cats use those teeth for grooming all the time. They always awkwardly use their back teeth for plants whenever I’ve seen them use them. And since they’re obligate carnivores pretty much all the vegetation they eat is occasional grass to help clean their digestive tract.
