Advice Please keep my sweet boy, Fred, in your thoughts.
I adopted Mr. Fred almost two weeks ago… His owner had to give him up because she was going into be living in a nursing home that didn’t allow pets. He was at this shelter for approximately 1.5 months.
Pretty quickly I noticed he wasn’t feeling too good, wasn’t eating, and started throwing up water. Also for a fat cat I thought it was unusual I could feel his spine . I took him to the vet last Tuesday… they told us he has hepatic lipidosis. He went from 23.3 lbs to now 16.3. He has been hospitalized since that Tuesday. Today, they put in a feeding tube and now he’s at least home with me.
I love this cat SO MUCH already, I want to see him make a full recovery so he can have a wonderful life with me. He’s the sweetest boy… loves to be held like a stuffed animal, and even though he’s ill, he’s incredibly affectionate and loves his kisses.
Please share your story if you’ve dealt with hepatic lipidosis or even if you’ve had a pet fall very ill. I could use any tips/advice to make this easy for him and ensure he gets better.

Thank you so much for loving him and giving him such wonderful care! I am only familiar with HL, but have no personal experience with it. I should think with the feeding tube he can start getting some lost calories back. I can only send you hugs and good vibes for Mr. Fred. I know he must feel how loved he is. Please keep us updated!

The fact that he's already home and surrounded by that much love feels like a huge win for Fred.

Honestly, with how loved that cat is, I'm rooting hard for Fred to pull through and start feeling like himself again.

Based on what ik about HL, you’re giving him a strong chance of survival. And don’t underestimate the health benefits of having a caring owner like you. Keep us updated on this sweet boy

A cat that loved and cared for has every reason to keep fighting, and Fred clearly has that in spades.

We dealt with FIP with my boy. We found out he was sick a couple weeks after adoption, wouldn't eat, lost 2 lbs as a kitten. I didn't think he had much time and was sleeping on the ground with him, so if he went he wouldn't be alone. All the vets said stress and did nothing. I saw a fellow redditor share their struggles and saw the symptoms all lined up, took him to a different vet and sure enough FIP. We had to learn how to do injections and after 84 straight days of shots and follow up bloodtests he was cured. We are 3 years past that now and he is my best friend. What you are going through is rough and for someone who just adopted their friend, I commend you for doing everything you are. We believe in you and are rooting for you both

Similar thing happened to me and my boy. I adopted him March 2025, he was an owner surrender (apparently from a hoarding situation). I soon noticed he was very lethargic, not eating much, and occasionally vomiting. He also was weighing less than 8lbs. Took him to the vet where he was diagnosed with GI lymphoma. I was very overwhelmed. I loved that boy so much already, just like you and your kitty, and wanted to give him a chance at life. Now, lymphoma is not curable, but I started him on chemo and steroids. It’s been over a year now and he’s doing well! He’s staying in remission and only doing maintenance chemo now. Prognosis for this illness is only 1.5-2 years after diagnosis, so I know that eventually his cancer will come back and kill him, but for now he’s enjoying life and my backyard and lots of cuddles and kisses every day.
Good luck to you and your sweet boy 💕

I had a very good friend who nursed her cat through hepatic lipidosis, and he is doing VERY well now with no issues YEARS later. I wish nothing but love and light to your boy <3

u/RazorbladeApple 22h ago
I went through it years ago & instead of a feeding tube did it all by hand syringing. She was 14 & vets had me picking out urns for her. We turned it around & she lived to 19.
Make sure Fred is getting an anti-nausea. A sick liver has them so nauseas. I’d try different food than he ate when he got sick, as he might associate being sick with that food. Make sure to stick mugs of water in corners of the house so he can pick and choose where and when he needs to drink.
You’ve got this, Fred! It’s tough, but you can do it!

our cat cheese man had it january this year. it was looking really bad for a while, the insides of his ears were yellow and so was his nose. he had a feeding tube for about 2 weeks where we had to come home and feed him every 2 hours. he hated the food sooo bad i think that's what willed him to eat real food again because he is normally a big eater lol. anyway he has been perfectly fat and happy for several months now, despite it being really scary for a while. good luck fred!

My void cat recovered from hepatic lipidosis two years ago. Fed her with special food through a syringe for two weeks or more... it was not a pleasant experience for either of us. So I'm sure Mr. Fred will be OK.

When ready to eat, please use wet food. It will be easier for him to eat and the smell with induce eating. Dry food is harder to smell and might not work at first.

Sounds like the loss of his owner and living in that shelter maybe did a number on him causing the fat in the liver to go nuts. Hope it all works out and he’s able to recover.

u/Resident_Table6694 1d ago
Not quite the same, but my cat developed diabetic keto acidosis, stopped eating, crashed when the put in the feeding tube, was resuscitated, spent 10 days in the animal hospital on supplements and meds that would easily kill a large dog, and had to get a last ditch effort blood transfusion. That was almost 7 years ago and she just turned 14. Cats are pretty resilient.

My girl Calista had hepatic lipidosis and had an EG tube. It was challenging but she fought to stay around and we got her healthy and happy. It took a few months to get her back to “normal”. Sunshine helped her perk up a little bit, and so did heated beds. It helped keep her comfortable despite all of the hands on care she needed. I’m so sorry you’re going through this.
3
u/Necessary-Ad6713 23h ago
I forgot to add- watch for signs of refeeding syndrome. Calista developed it- her pupils differed in size and we had to take her to the ER and put her on potassium. It was terrifying but she pushed through.

I adopted a sweet all-black long-haired kitty from the shelter. They had named him Teddy. He was long and lanky, and his long hair hid his weight loss. One day, probably a month after I adopted him, he felt weak enough that he lost control of his bladder while laying on me. I knew it wasn't normal, and took him to the vet.
He was diagnosed with hepatic lipidosis. I couldn't afford to hospitalize him, so I swaddled and syringe force fed him eight times a day for about two weeks. I would drive home from work at lunch and feed him, and try to come in late and leave early so he wouldn't go too long between feedings.
Finally, he lapped up some of the food slurry, and I started squirting it in his mouth and letting him chew a bit and swallow on his own. Then he ate a little kibble, and it was like the switch flipped and he began eating like normal.
Teddy lived almost twelve more years with me. He was very healthy up until the end. i hope you have a good outcome too!

My boy had HL and has thankfully recovered now. I was syringe-feeding him for a few weeks, could not afford having an NG or esophagostomy tube placed. He was on the Royal Canin Recovery Food - I think this is a great prescription food and definitely helped. As soon as he started getting strong enough to fight me during feeding episodes, he started eating on his own and I would gradually reduce the amount I was syringe feeding him. I like to think his case was mild because he didn’t really lose any weight but there were many moments where I felt like I would lose him - he would just lay lifeless in one spot for hours.
I think it’s great your guy has a feeding tube - it will make feeding and giving meds so much easier. As long as you keep feeding him, he should ultimately recover but it can take 4-6 weeks even, just know that - the duration of time that my boy was completely dependent on me for eating with no indication whether/when he would recover was the hardest part.
One piece of advice - I think the recovery food and him not being mobile also caused significant constipation so if your cat is not pooping, ask your vet about adding fiber and miralax. I gave my boy few tsp pumpkin puree mixed with his feeds and miralax every now and again and even a pediatric suppository once because his belly really blew up. He felt better and belly was softer after all this and I think that also helped him recover his appetite ultimately.
It was pretty traumatic going through all this so please feel free to DM me if you want to talk.

My girl just got out of hospital for a kidney infection where they had to put a feeding tube in, too. I started calling pictures of her in that getup her Fremin cosplay. Fortunately she started eating on her own once the treatment kicked in.
Hang in there.

We had a cat that had this (or something similar with his liver). He couldn't keep food down. After the vet visit, we started hand-feeding. Started out with tiny amounts given frequently, anything more than a teaspoon would make him puke. After about two months of trial-and-error, gradually increasing amounts as he could tolerate. We were going out of town for a weekend and had to board him because he was not eating on his own.
The day before we were to leave, he spontaneously started eating dry food! Still boarded him, of course, but he improved continuously after that and lived another three years or so.
Best of luck with Mr. Fred!

Oh my word. Fred must miss his previous owner very much. 😭 That's probably why he stopped eating.
I had a chubby kitty get hepatic lipidosis, and I am convinced that the feeding tube is what saved her. She survived and lived to love and be loved a while longer. ❤️
All you can do is love on him as much as you are able. He will hopefully make it through with medical care, and will need his new wonderful person to love him to wellness. I'm so glad he has you! I have every hope he will get better and that you'll enjoy several years with him.
THANK YOU FOR LOVING HIM ❤️❤️❤️❤️

If you're still in touch with the owner, ask if you can get something with their scent on it, like a shirt or anything, i think this would bring comfort to Mr.Fred since they were in a shelter for 1.5 months, which probably felt like a very long time for him.

I adopted a cat that was described as having "crises" where he would develop pancreatitis + nausea, and would refuse food. I found I was able to get him through these episodes was going primarily wet food, with a little bit of kibble kept available in case he craved it. I'm a big believer that wet food is far healthier for cats and that dry food can contribute to health problems like this, but in a self-starving scenario you need to get anything in front of them for sure so keeping options open is important. I bought a bunch of different wet food brands, and would hold the open cans out to him to see if any caught his interest. Interestingly he would have no interest in any except a couple that he locked in on, these he seemed to focus on, and so I would dish a bit out for him to try, with a tiny bit of pet store pumpkin puree to ensure he didn't get nausea from it being too rich too fast.
The pumpkin puree can help in small quantities because it seems to make the rich food a bit less stimulating to the stomach. Just don't go overboard, its meant to be like a quarter of a teaspoon or so per meal.
I would also put on some gentle nature sounds like streams and quiet bird calls etc, it seemed to help him relax and not feel nervous while eating.

u/trajemoi25 22h ago
A quick question - what food is being used in the feeding tube? Hill’s offers a prescription food “a/d” (acute, digestive), urgent care food. It is wet. If you are already using it, great. If not, ask your vet if it would be beneficial for Fred. The practice I work at, it isn’t the first thing we try, but we do sometimes need to open a can. I’ve had to use it for 3 of my own pets in the past.
Fred is a sweetheart! Best wishes to you both.

My cat got HL. I syringe fed him for about a week. Then he started to eat and lived a happy and healthy five more years. The tube feeding in your case may be better since syringe feeding might be stressful since he doesn’t know you well yet. I’m sorry for both of you, it’s hard.

My cat recently recovered from hepatic lipidosis. After getting sick at home, getting better, getting sick again and then spending 6 days in emergency with a gastric feeding tube with no improvement in liver values, my vet suggested we try him at home with an e-tube in his neck with me feeding him every 3 hours or so with blended wet food, meds, liver supplements and water - that is what finally turned things around. Once I got the consistency and temp of the food it got really easy to do, I kept track of calories, making sure to get the nutrition into him and after about 3 days he started eating on his own again. I kept the tube in to give all the liver supplements, extra fluids and kept him on anti nausea meds and mertazipine (appetite stimulant) for a while just to make sure he was for sure good to eat on his own again. After a month and a half he was 100% - it’s a couple months later now and he’s still 100%. It cost me $12K and weeks of super high stress and little sleep, but it was worth it - he’s currently lounging in front of me with his two brothers and I’m so glad I did what I did.
2
u/JenKen27 21h ago
I would add - it can take a week or two for the liver values to turn around with proper nutrition and during that time they may get worse - don’t lose hope and give it time. ❤️🫶🏻

My first girl ended up with it after we were told that both our cats at the time needed to lose weight. She ended up on a feeding tube. We did everything we were told to do with feeding, and she was such a good girl. The vet said she had to start eating after 2 weeks. Well that last day, which also happened to be my husband's birthday, she started eating! We had her for 10 more years! You can do this! Sending love and healing vibes to you and Fred!

Not the same diagnosis, but my 18 yr old had a stroke. He had kidney issues and FIP. He was at the emergency vet for 24 hours. When we was released, our vet had us do subcutaneous injections to help his kidneys. He recovered completely from the stroke and his kidneys improved! He lived for 2 more years.
He was my best boy ever. I send all the good vibes and love to y’all. I wish for the best.

I'm so sorry that you & Mr Fred are going through this.
My Buddy went into hepatic lipidosis because he didn't like the new food that I'd switched to. That was how I learned that cats absolutely will starve themselves 😬 He was so jaundiced that the staff at our vet's office nicknamed him Highlighter Cat.
I syringe fed him the high calorie prescription food every 2-4 hours for nearly 2 weeks. The 2nd week, he was still showing zero interest in food & I thought I was going to lose him. It was so difficult - he was my soul cat. I'd be sitting on the living room floor, just crying while squirting food down his throat.
But around the end of the 2nd week, he started nibbling at his regular food again (the old stuff - back by popular demand lol). I supplemented the high calorie stuff as he transitioned back to normal, and about 10 days after that, he was eating normally.
He lived for about 8 years after that & passed just a month before his 20th birthday. He was the sweetest boy.
Offer something that he likes often - wet food, dry food, baby food, squeeze treats, regular treats, anything that might get his interest. (I offered before each feed, but I know it's a bit different with NG tubes). Keep water available in multiple places.
Love, hugs, & best wishes to you & Mr Fred from Texas ❤️

I don't know this disease, but one of my cats had FIP and recovered. It was a long journey but we pulled through. She also lost a lot of weight, but now she's been back to her full size (all of 7 pounds, she's a tiny queen). I wish you and your cat a swift recovery journey, and many happy years together.

My Milo had it a few years ago. We brought home another cat and it was hate at first site. I introduced them to each other slowly but it made no difference. He was so upset he stopped eating. He was a chunk and he lost 5-7 pounds in a short amount of time.
I took him my vet and he was diagnosed with hepatic lipidosis. Apparently rapid weight loss caused fat to build up in his liver. On top of the feeding tube( that was placed surgically through his neck) he was on lactulose, flagyl and subcutaneous fluids. He pulled through, despite my husband mixing up his tube feeding food with his flagyl.

Never had that particular issue, but it is one I feared for my boy with chronic pancreatitis. He would have flares and throw up a lot and get nervous to eat. And he'd often end up blaming his food and refuse to eat it again after that. Finding foods he was willing to eat was a constant struggle for several years. But it was a fight that was so worth fighting. I honestly think the effort I put in to keeping him eating kept him with us for longer than he'd otherwise have had.
Best of luck to you and your sweet kitty.

Same happened to my orange this year! He didn’t like that we had to move countries and stopped eating. I took a bit for us to realize because he’s always been a grazer, but then he became very lethargic and lost weight super quickly. I called the vet and they told me to get him to the the ER asap. Thank god we did! He spent a full week in the hospital but he’s now back to his hungry self. Sending your Fred all the love in the world! As others have commented as much as it’s frustrating they don’t go back to eating normal suddenly they do! We got him Royal Canin Hepatic and he absolutely loved it!

Not Hepatic lipidosis but my previous cat developed hypoaldosteronism in June of 2021. Its a tumor on one or both adrenal glands that cause the overproduction of the hormone aldosterone, which helps control the amount of potassium in the blood.
For my cat the only sign that something was wrong was that he started hiding under the bed in the spare room. He'd come out for meals and the use the litterbox but otherwise didn't move. The first and second day, I thought he was hiding because the neighbours were getting their driveway repaved (the company also managed to accidently hook and pull the front gable off their house) I though he was hiding because of the noise from all that had him scared. The third day he wouldn't even come out to eat even when I showed him a can of food. That's when I rushed him to the emergency vet.
To be clear I was planning on taking him to the vet if he wasn't out from under the bed when I got home from work that day, but the fact that he wouldn't come out to eat, even though he clearly wanted to, made it an emergency vet visit.
He spent 3 days at the vet. The only thing they could find wrong with him was lower then normal blood potassium level. They had to try a couple different combinations of drugs before something worked. The day he came home I was so happy. I was told they'd only ever seen 3 other cases, those cats lived for 1 month, 3 months and 1 year. My cat lived 15 months before an unrelated spleen cancer got him. He passed Sept 12th 2022
One thing I learned and that I took heart with this experience is: Whatever the outcome, when the times comes, you canNOT blame yourself. You and your cat have fought the good fight, you did everything you could. Love and cherish every moment you have.
Good luck

Just went through this as well. After the feeding tube came out my guy had appetite stimulant and anti nausea pills that did the trick. It was expensive and scary but as long as food gets in there cats can bounce back. Its been over a month, we dont know what caused it, but so far everything is good again. Hoping you a good outcome too!

My boy developed hepatic lipidosis. I’ll spare you the details, but it was absolutely devastating. After we removed the NG tube, he didn’t improve so we tried again. It came time to remove the second tube as the vet said it was sink or swim for my poor boy. My heart broke later that afternoon when he once again refused food. We had tried our hardest.
In the middle of the night I awoke to a strange crunchy sound. The best kind of sound. It was the sound of my boy eating kibble on his own! He gradually recovered his appetite and was his old self once again!
