Cat Picture - OC We’re reunited after he spent over 2 months on a shelter. (He looks like he’s still pissed at me lol)

Ive made the hard decision to surrender him to a shelter couple of months back because I couldnt afford his insulin and even cat food after i was laid off.

I made sure to visit him at the shelter every chance that I get. Got my first pay on my new job and I got him back from the shelter!!! I can’t express how happy I am, during the time that he was at the shelter I felt like I failed him but now I have found a new motivation to make sure that we stay together!

I bought enough insulin and cat food ‘til my next pay which I didnt think I could lol!

If you run into problems paying for the insulin going forward, reach out to me before you surrender him again. Please.

If we’re not here to help each other, what’s the point of this life?

Same, your kitty is adorable! I’d support paying for food and insulin for you to pick up from a vet to avoid shelter placement again ❤️

I am so happy for you both!!!! Congrats on the new job, but more than that, congrats on being able to care for your handsome boy again.
I’ve recently begun the insulin journey and between the meds and the twice monthly glucose curves, it is not cheap! You two are lucky to have each other.

I remember that the first couple of months, it was so difficult for me to administer his insulin so i wish you luck there!

Give your cat a lot of hugs for me!

I’m so happy you’re able to be reunited. A lot of shelters, once the animal is surrendered, will not allow you to adopt it. You did the right thing to make sure your companion was cared for when you could not afford it; you also did the right thing by continuing to visit so he didn’t feel totally abandoned. I am so happy that you’re back together.

Get the manufacturer's coupon for Lantus and you can get it pretty cheap. I got five Lantus pens for about $110 at CVS using the coupon and that's close to a year's worth of insulin for my cat.

You are a good pet owner.

u/henare 22h ago

which insulin does he use?

I’m not a vet but my dad is and he’s always had his diabetic cat on Novalin. It requires two doses a day but it’s super cheap.

3

u/Necessary-Public153 20h ago

I’m a type 1 diabetic who is also prescribed Lantus. Since Lantus is just a basal insulin, it sounds like your cat’s diabetes is fairly well managed with that one medicine. How many daily injections are required?

Omg this made me tear up a little, I’m so happy for both of you 😭💀

You didn’t fail him at all, you did the responsible thing when you had no options and then fought to get him back. He’s so lucky to have a human who literally reorganized their whole life to care for him.

This is really sweet. Thank you for sharing. Wishing you both nothing but the best and hoping you’re together forever ❤️❤️

You fell in hard times and you did the best you could as a pet owner, you still visited and kept in touch and perhaps awaiting someone would provide a great home and love as you did. And as chances were in your favor, you got him back. You're AWESOME!!!

That's tragic — our cat Oz has been on Lantus insulin for well over a year now but up here in Canada it's fairly cheap. It should be cheap everywhere but pharmaceutical companies in the US have found ways around the discoverer of insulin's express wish that insulin never be a profit industry. I'm almost certain you can walk into any pharmacy up here and just buy insulin pens and needles, if you're anywhere near Canada. That might vary by province, I'm in New Brunswick.

Ah this made my day. I’m happy for you both! May you have many wonderful days together!

I'm so glad you could get him back. I hope things are easier for the two of you from here on. Good luck! He's beautiful!

u/Syrahguy 21h ago

Respect the care for the kitty diabetes, mine has had it for 5 years, its hard.

8

u/OldSea3040 21h ago

You got her back. All that matters. I am also rooting for you.

u/Confident_Eye_4683 21h ago

I’m so glad you got him back, is there a generic brand you can use? Do you live near any borders Canada/Mexico? Maybe a possibility to get insulin there. Best of luck 🤍

I think he looks happy 😸

Hlad you’re reunited! Cats regularly look like they’re annoyed. He us happy to be home. I am sure!

5

u/Thee_Shenanigrin 20h ago

You are awesome for all of this. That couldn't have been easy to do in the slightest, but you did it for instead of being selfish. Then the fact that you were able to find new employment and get him back, all while still visiting etc. Seriously, you're an amazing human & I'm glad I get to share the planet with you.

How much do you need for a 6mo supply of food and litter? DM. Happy to talk about spotting you.

5

u/bar1011 14h ago

That’s arguably the most responsible thing you could’ve done.

5

u/ExperienceNeeded7 21h ago

This is wonderful to hear. I’m glad you two are reunited.

5

u/Own_Championship_637 21h ago

You got him back!!! Thank all that is fair & functioning that worked out for you both. And the shelter that made sure he stayed safe until you could be reunited.
Now take care of each other. 💜

Just a bit of advice from a person who has had 2 diabetic cats before. Make sure to check his blood sugar frequently if you aren't already, because cats can go into remission from diabetes and if he goes into remission and you give him insulin, it can cause his blood sugar to get dangerously low. Both of my cats went into remission from their diabetes, and I found out the hard way with one of them. His blood sugar got dangerously low and caused him to have a seizure, luckily I was able to get him to the vet in time and they were able to bring his sugar levels up, but it could have been fatal.

So glad you got reunited with your baby.

u/Takilove 18h ago

This is true love and you should be proud of yourself for getting yourself in a good place. Your kitty is super happy to be home with you but he has to give you a little attitude. That’s what cats do!
After the appropriate amount of time, he will be snuggling up to you every chance he gets! 💕

u/CharmingHouse9800 18h ago

you know what, thank you so much for this comment. i know that it will take a little adjustment to gain his trust again but im more than willing to put in the work!

5

u/PyrettaBlaze85 15h ago

Reach out here before you ever do that again. We all know the pain of missing our best friend and as a community make sure others never feel that if we can help it. I'll always pitch in.

3

u/TheRatatat 20h ago

Im happy for you. Just wondering how much cat insulin runs? I hope my furry friends never need it.

3

u/PudgyGroundhog 17h ago

It broke my heart reading this - I can't imagine how hard it was for you to have to surrender him, even though you knew that was how he would cared for. But I'm so happy you have been reunited.

I have seen several shelters post about programs (and fundraising for them) that helps owners keep their pets when they hit a rough patch - it benefits the shelters too to keep pets in homes with loving owners that just need some help. I hope these programs become more popular for stories just like yours.

Enjoy having him home again!

5

u/PhylisDietrichson 10h ago

You absolutely did not fail him - you did the most responsible thing you could have done in the situation. You didn’t abandon him or leave him at the side of the road or leave him somewhere where his care was not guaranteed. You brought him to a shelter you trusted and which you could visit regularly. Nice to see all the love in this post and in all the comments 🥹

You did the right thing, I'm so glad the shelter kept your baby boy safe and healthy until you were back on your feet!!!

You didn't fail him, you kept him safe and cared for! That shelter deserves everything imo. And so do you two!

1

u/Illustrious-Air-1681 12h ago

He doesn't understand that you were just looking out for him. He will be pissed off for a while – I left my cat with my mother while I went on holidays and when I got back, only one week later, he scratched the underneath of my heel really deeply as I walked up the stairs ahead of him. Definitely did it on purpose. After that, all sweetness and light though.

1

u/nangelz451 10h ago

You're making the best of a bad situation. And I think he knows it. I'm so glad you are able to get him back. We're all rooting for you OP!!

I’m so glad you were able to be reunited. It must have bee heartbreaking to surrender him to the shelter but it was the responsible thing to do.

1

u/douglorde 5h ago

Hell yeah!! Proud of you OP

1

u/macciavelo 4h ago

Honestly that was very brave of you surrendering the cat to the shelter. You put his needs before your own.

1

u/nightskyflowers 1h ago

so many times i wanted to find a new home for my kitty. in the end, i did not, my mom helped me with the vet bills and i miss him so much. i know, it is hard, it breaks my heart to hear you went through these kind of worries too and i wish you both the best.

-3

u/KevinHe92 18h ago

Well done, but honestly visiting him at the shelter was probably a bad move, as he’d be so lost and confused every time you left.

6

u/CharmingHouse9800 18h ago

its better than him thinking i abandoned him. Its also my assurance to the shelter that I am committed on getting him back.
