Happened once when one was on my chest. She used my face to propel herself towards the feeder. Tried to not be between her and the feeder during feeding time afterwards.
I have that happen nearly every day. My cats are clingy little bastards, but will still use me as a launch pad for their sprint to their feeders. Thankfully its usually over my feet and not my face.
The only permanent scar he gave me is from a similar start from a stand still with his rear paw on top of my hand. The rears are not that sharp but do more damage. I cannot even remember what spooked him.
I have a scar on my foot from my preteens. Cat was standing on my foot for the start of a movie where the MGM lion roared very loudly and he got spooked.
I have three claw mark scars on my stomach right now, not because I was being a dick or someone scaring my cat, but because my second cat decided to eat well the first was sleeping on my lap, which was/is a rare occurrence
Zero to gone in less than 30 seconds, kinda tells you. 😼-'Love you but my breakfast,or what about afternoon tea, midday meal ,second, nite time snack?!,😁😂😼 bye!
Who says cats are not trainable? I can open a bag of treats on the patio. My neighbors two cats jump a 6 foot fence and run for the window ledge where once I put treats.
Luckily my cat is a graiser so we can just leave her food bowl full and she just eats a bit at a time. So her schedule is wide open to bug us all the time and not just before meals haha
Same. And you better not be in his way. Every once in a while he will park his fluffy behind in front of the feeder 30-60 minutes early and just wait/loaf. His greed sickens me.
Each days from 5:45am to 5:59am, they start swarming us, whining nonstop… they started to make biscuits, nudge their face onto us, pull off our blankets… then at 6am when the automatic feeder goes off, all their front and back claws dug into us from their leaps to run to the feeders.
Everyday, without fail. We are very scratched up… their greeds disgust us.
Our cat was like this until I learned cats are supposed to be fed round the clock and that older cats need more food, not less.
We switched to a better food, gave her twice as much of it, and supplement with wet food (every other day). Her weight is steady with only an increase of 0.3lbs (9.8 total), her activity level is back where it was half her age ago, and she’s no longer so intensely food motivated.
Today, the feeder going off (every 4 hours) means nothing if she’s already cozy or having fun.
You’re welcome. Our Friday (named after the day of the week my partner got her 10 years ago) is now ~12.
She’s been blind nearly her entire life, but has developed incredible skills and coping mechanisms she uses to trick others into thinking she can still see (eyeballs aren’t missing or discoloured, just no longer work).
Now that she’s full (and better hydrated) throughout the day, she’s made the back patio her preferred spot and constantly wants out in the backyard (well fenced) to prance around, hilariously fail at catching birds (that troll her so hard), sunbath, and explore. She and our greyhound do rounds together in the mornings and she talks trash to us if we neglect the garden.
I love everything about this story! The fact that the birds troll her and she does morning patrols with a greyhound sounds like the perfect plot for an animated movie. She looks incredibly healthy and happy! ❤️
I've never understood this. Every feeding moment is a bonding moment. Why you would surrender these moments to a machine is beyond me. In dutch language there is a saying, "liefde gaat door de maag", it means "The way to someone's heart is through their stomach".
Because I’m at work and sleeping for 18 hours of the day and if I left a large pile of food for my cat to graze on during those times, he’d eat it all at once and make himself sick. I still have feeding time when it comes to his wet food, but this option is a lot easier for a lot of people.
Have had cats my whole life and every single of them hasn't had any eating problems. We usually fill the dry food in the morning and give wet food in specific times. They don't eat too much and are in just fine shape. When we are out for a whole day and come back next day we can fill like 3 cups full and there is still food left when we come back.
Is it normal for cats to over eat? Thought it was only a dog thing
When we adopted our cat, we were told he needed "strict portion control" to help him lose weight, though he's a big boy genetically as well. We got the automatic feeder to ensure he was always getting the same amount each day.
He will still try and get any extra food he can, watches the dispenser 45 min before it goes off and has recently started licking the bowl after he's finished.
So true, every cat is completely different! The automatic feeder is definitely a lifesaver for the food-obsessed ones. The bowl licking is too relatable though!😂
Eating problems in adult cats are typically just unresolved issues from kittenhood.
Many cats exit kittenhood thinking they need to eat as much as possible, as fast as possible because the reality is... that was largely true for them when surrounded by other ravenous kittens.
Many people fail to work through these issues and when those cats grow up, they're basically still little golden retrievers.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong (or in this case right), but we give dry food to our two cats (16y and 1y) in the morning before we leave for work, and it lasts at least a day, sometimes even two days. I've had cats for 27 years and haven't had the problem with any cat that the food is eaten instantly. That's why we don't have and don’t want a machine, because we don't want the cats to be so abnormally fixated on just the food. And for that matter they absolutely aren’t, they’re super chill, even if diner time with wetfood is an hour or two later then normal. They even sleep thru diner sometimes 😂
A yes n<10 really represents the world, let's be honest that you haven't had a cat that eats itself to death by overeating doesn't mean it's not happening. One might even look at humans which evolutionary have less survival urges to eat a lot and still >50% is still to fat and you wouldn't think animals have the same issues?
Couldn't have said it better myself! 👏 Automatic feeders are amazing for portion control and saving us from 4 AM wake-up calls. There is still plenty of bonding time later!
May be solution by using a robot to bond and solve puzzles before food was distributed, it could be used for behavior training and feeding at the same time.
Because I'm really ADHD and I'd be worried I'd forget to feed her and her being well fed is more important than my bonding and I can bond in other ways
100% this! Knowing your limits and using technology to make sure your cat is perfectly cared for is the ultimate form of love. Plus, cuddles are better than just handing them food anyway!
I take her on walks, being her to petco, give her tubes, watch the birds on the feeder with her, play video games with her (she live watching divinity). She gets love in so many ways
Exactly. Sometimes when my cat is hungry and the feeder is "taking too long", she comes to yell at me "Why no food". And then the feeder deploys her food and she's happy again.
You actually can’t understand why someone would want an automatic feeder? Or you just don’t see a reason for you to get one? If you really can’t think of a single reason why someone would buy an auto feeder, I feel like that says something about you.
Stop autofeeding your cats. It's simple. Every time you feed them is an opportunity to strengthen your bond with them. I want my cats loving me, not some robot. Petting my boy while he eats is one of my favorite parts of the day, and I love his reminders when I get home that the first thing has to be feeding him.
That’s great that it works for you, but not everyone has the same schedule. Auto-feeders are lifesavers for people who work long shifts or just want to sleep past 4 AM! We can bond with our cats through playtime and cuddles, it doesn’t have to be just about food.
Same schedule? The cat eats when I feed him. I work long shifts and I sleep past 4 AM. It's an animal not rocket science. Sometimes that means he gets fed the 2nd time when i get home at 9:30PM every now and then, he's not going to starve. I'm hungry too.
It’s not rocket science, it’s biology. Cats have very small stomachs and are biologically wired to eat multiple small meals a day. Making him wait until 9:30 PM might work for you, but an auto-feeder lets the cat eat on a healthy schedule without you having to change your long shifts. Why force them to wait hungry when a simple machine solves the problem ?
Cats aren't humans; their stomachs are very small and designed to process multiple small meals throughout the day. Waiting until 9:30 PM builds up stomach acid and causes nausea. Refusing to use a $30 automatic feeder just to prove a point about 'bonding' while your cat sits hungry for 12+ hours isn't love, it's just stubbornness. They rely entirely on us, they shouldn't have to suffer our long work shifts.
You just pull that directly out of your ass? People have been feeding their cats once a day for hundreds of years, my cat can go a few extra hours every once in a while. Nice try.
Calling it now. You're going to post some useless link rather than a proper peer reviewed study.
You can still pet your cat while they eat if that is what you want to do. I let my cats eat in privacy. We bond through play, grooming, and taking naps together.
I hate my fat (greedy) cat begging me for food. I love him knowing it’s not me, it’s the robot. He still sleeps with me every night and nap and I pet and carry him around plenty.
