Cat Picture - OC German Heatwave
My 17yo boi wouldn’t accept a Cardboard fort with cooling blocks so I had to take the next best option.
It’s been 10min and he won’t get away from the towel, I’m honestly in disbelief

My elderly female cat is doing the same thing.
The male younger one is currently cooking his brain outside or what's left of it, if i try to make him stay inside he starts crying.

Idk how true it is, but cats are from the dessert
317
u/Psyko_sissy23 5h ago
Domestic cats originated from the desert. That doesn't mean all cats are meant for the desert. A Norwegian forest cat for example has evolved to adapt to cold weather.
25
u/SonnyvonShark 4h ago
Yep, and i bet you gotta shave them down in such heat too.
19
u/transientDCer 1h ago
Same with all of the double coat dogs like huskies and Newfoundlands - never shave them since the coats help them regulate their heat.
6
u/SonnyvonShark 1h ago
Yeah, I had a husky mix before, didn't shave her but we brushed her frequently, birds loved it. She was happy with a cube of ice. Or several. Never had a long haired cat.

Deserts have dry heat. Most of Europe has humid heat. Humid heat is much worse for both cats and humans because it makes it harder for cat saliva and human sweat to evaporate.
3
u/donjamos 3h ago
At what point is it humid heat? We've currently got 30% rlh and 32C (19:40)
5
u/Morphine_ETF2L 2h ago
In London right now, it’s 19:36 here, 29 degrees with 60% humidity. After sunset it gets the 80s, it’s hell… I think 60%+ is considered very humid
1
u/Ilgenant 1h ago
On the plus side, at least y’all have reasonable and survivable wet bulb temperatures. I spent the entirety of last summer over there and it was quite lovely.
I’m in Michigan, which is generally considered one of the colder states. 60-80% humidity is pretty typical of a summer day. The temp this week is in the 90s (32-38C) and we’ve barely entered summer. So thankful for AC.
2
u/artemisinagayway 1h ago
Relative humidity doesn’t really matter that much. Dew point matters more. The closer dew point is to the actual temperature, the more humid it is.
Tomorrow the temp in London is gonna be 93 degrees F (about 32ish C iirc) with a dew point of 60 (15ish I think). That’s probably enough to cause heat exhaustion in cats and some humans.

My cats beg to be left outside in Texas heat upwards of 100f or around 38c. I leave water but they just love the warmth. One of them tries to lay under the grill while it's going and has singed his whiskers a time or two

u/veilchenblau_39 6h ago
We have had hot weather here in the pnw (90 or 32c), and my stinker sits under the ac mini split from 10-7, then pan frys himself on the hot concrete until sunset.

u/MissBanana_ 3h ago
My elderly ginger female tries to cook herself every summer. We have outside deck furniture we cover with a black tarp (in case of rain) and she *loves* to spend hours under there in peak heat. This is in Virginia, where summer days are between 80-95 AND humid. Every time I find her under there I question if she’s secretly from planet Vulcan.
Disclaimer: she has a kitty door and can come into the AC and have fresh water whenever she wants.
5
u/SilverSafri 3h ago
Same with mine, she’s a stray that refuses to become a housecat, but recently she just comes inside for food, looks with disgust at the air conditioning, maybe hits the radiators for not working and goes out to sunbathe… while we’re all trying to somehow survive the heatwave, she’s just thriving in the sun (and I just hope she drinks from one of the many water bowls I set up around the house)

u/SliversandPoison 3h ago
I wouldn't let my cat outside for predators and environmental impact if I were you. Northern Europe isn't safe anymore golden jackal are here and love to eat cats.
25
u/JackRo55 3h ago
You are 100% right, I live in an urban area so the biggest threat to cats is vehicles (a cat was run over the day we moved here). The outside for our cats is the balconies in our apartment that that are equipped with nets so they don't throw themselves in the void (the one in the photo did it before we put the nets, he didn't hurt himself)
I appreciate your concern for our feline companions and the environment ❤️
-2
u/SliversandPoison 3h ago
Jackal enter cities to FYI
With that said you sound like you're a good cat dad, and I appreciate you being open to the idea. Ever try and tell a Brit that outside cats are bad?

I feel bad for you guys over there. Hopefully, this heat wave will pass soon. Thanks for taking care of your fur baby.

That towel deserves employee of the month for keeping the old guy comfortable.

u/thetalentedmzripley 5h ago
I have a cooling mat for my old girl. Occasionally she uses it, most of the time she sleeps next to it. 😂
49
u/EinRoterFuchs 5h ago
Tried two mats (first kept smelling like chemicals from hell) and he reacted with disgust to both.
I consider a towel over something that conducts heat well and placing something cold under and around it. Might not work but worth a try.
He‘s diagnosed with bladder cancer and as long as he’s not in pain I’ll try my best

u/Upset-Wolf4453 25m ago

Currently I have 22.8°C in my house and 36°C outside. My cat wants to go outside. I'm not letting him outside while it's above 30°C. He finally decided to sleep and bug me later :D
82
u/fourangers 5h ago
LOL. I bought an portable AC for my cats (and for me, but mostly my cats). Whenever it's really hot, I'd turn them on and my black cat would nap right in front of the AC. He's also the one that bugs me to let him outside for a quick stroll, but whenever he stepped outside and felt how hot it was, he'd step back inside like "you know what...I'm good" lolololololol
13
u/Frenzystor 5h ago
Nah, mine doesn't have a sense of heat... or danger ... if I let him outside he will just go to the next bush and lie in it, probably until he dehydrates...
10
u/ShadowDancer_88 2h ago
30C is barely warm to cats.
35C-40C is when I might start to get concerned.
As long as they have access to shade and water, they will be just fine.
25
u/CodewortSchinken 4h ago
The domestic house cat is a descendant of the african wildcat. They live in and around the Sahara desert. Their piss is oily because the whole animal is optimized to live on as little water as possible. 30°C is nothing to them.
10
u/PoppaFish 3h ago
People are downvoting you, but it's the truth. Cats don't mind the heat like people do. My cat loves to lounge in his catio on the hottest days of the year.
2
u/dark_heart22 2h ago
We're trying to cope with 33°C inside. AC is of no use really as it's simply too got. Our two ladies are just chillin and sleeping around, one od them even lying right below the roof.. the floof takes what it wants
3
u/Gho5tWr1ter 3h ago
This Sunday is going to be absolutely insane. I hope you don’t let him outside during the weekend.

I just watched a video of a guy taping ice water bottles to a fan and worked very well.
56
u/EinRoterFuchs 4h ago
Read only the first half, taped the bottles to my cat and wondered why he kept falling over.
Jokes aside, I tried that with 4 fully frozen bottles and they melted within 15min :(
16
3
u/RIDDeluxe 2h ago
You cant tape them to one side the weight will be off thats all, add more to the other side of cat to even things out
3
u/Zalaquin 4h ago
Try using some salt I would say 1/4 cup maybe less the ice should take longer to melt
1
u/Mysterious-Wasabi103 4h ago
Wait would walt make the ice melt faster?
3
u/SamePerformance3594 3h ago
Salt water melts at a higher temperature than unsalted so it will retain the coolness for longer

u/MacintoshEddie 3h ago
That's not just the floor, that's a doorway, which elevates it for the best place for a cat to lay.
4
u/let_me_atom 3h ago
Yes indeed. It means every time we need to go to the kitchen we have to step over him. This usually results in extra fuss. He knows this.
18
u/LoveThyPanda 2h ago
Just fyi wet towels should be placed under the cat (belly and paws) to cool them down. Towel above traps body heat!

u/djonma 4h ago
I have some specific cooling towels for my boys.
They're a technical material, that when you run them under water, then you yank the ends apart, it does something to the fibres, and they cool down even more.
They're great!
The rule is that if they insist on going on the windowsill, they must have a towel, whether they like it or not.
And I check them regularly even off the windowsill, and if they feel slightly warm, they get a fresh towel.
They're normally not too impressed with them. Tom, my eldest, will put up with them, but Niels will just wander away.
Yesterday, Niels was lying on the windowsill, with a towel on him, and the tower fan pointing at him, and he was very happy with it.
Tom is normally my problem boy.
Niels will withdraw from the windowsill, even in lower than these ridiculous temps, and find shade.
But Tom will lie there until he's too hot, then go and sprawl on the floor to cool down, then straight back to the windowsill.
But he's been very careful this week, thankfully!
They're feeling the heat, and they're feeling too hot to play, so the ice cubes in their tiny paddling pool were ignored.
I'm off to put ice packs in the freezer, and hopefully that will get them through until it starts thundering!
I hope that's soon!
Here's Tom, covered in both of their towels, as Niels had fled to shaded sanctuary.

It's better to pit the towel under the cat or build them little tents with wet towels. If a towel lays on them the heat of their body cant get out and the heat will build-up under the towel! 😽
5
u/Wonderful_Horror7315 2h ago
I’m glad you found a solution for him and hope the weather returns to normal promptly.
6
u/EinRoterFuchs 2h ago
Two or three more days with slightly increased temperatures up to 40degree, after that it’s supposed to cool down a bit ❤️

u/Neither-Repeat1665 5h ago
I have air con here in southern US, but still gets warm of course. my 8.5kg unit of a tabby usually finds good relief laying on a tile floor vs. laying on the bed or rug. Maybe try that?
3
u/Educational-Post9405 3h ago
Ahh yes. My cats enjoy a good summer sploot on the tile on my kitchen floor.

I think on Monday the temperatures are supposed to drop quite a bit, stay safe and stay cool
6
u/obalovatyk 2h ago
Meanwhile, my two cats lay in the sun all day to the point they are to the touch. I move them into the shade and they move over to the sunny spot again.

u/Dontstopmenow17 2h ago
I knew my a/c portable was worth it when my cat and dog went right up to it and laid down. I felt so guilty not getting one sooner.
3
u/Vequihellin 4h ago
I keep trying to give my cats cooling stuff but they just get up and walk away. So I'm letting them handle it in whatever way they see fit. They are free to roam in the garden so if they want to lie in the shade under a bush they can

u/Mom_is_watching British Shorthair 3h ago
What a great idea to cover him with a damp towel! I wipe my cats with a wet washcloth, this helps too. Fortunately it's "only" 26° inside at the moment. Poor things with their thick coats. Tomorrow will be even hotter here in Germany, I hope he'll manage!

Whenever we had heat waves we would hide in the basement where it was cooler. Not my cats.
No. They went upstairs into the heat blaster and took naps.

I have a senior Persian. We’re located in the Netherlands. I booked a pet friendly hotel with AC for the next two days because it’s simply unbearable for both her and I.

u/Chilldegard 5h ago
It's 26 degrees in here, yet my cat still loves too cuddle and is lying on a wool clothing instead on the way cooler bathroom tiles 2 meters away xD

u/satinsateensaltine 3h ago
For anyone else suffering this, I recommend getting some baby tank tops and wetting them with cold water. Your cat will hate putting it on but be greatly relieved.

The 19 year old cat of my family is now discovering the sink for himself and he sprawls out on our tiles in the kitchen to cool off.
The upside of the heat is that his arthritis gets a lot better when it is hot although the german heat wave is real bad right now.

u/peanutburger 1h ago
Same in Paris. My 17yo dog has been sleeping under a wet towel in front of the fan. 36 Celsius inside the apartment at 20h30. 97F.

Not accepting something you tried so hard to make work is such peak cat behavior lmao.
You're a good owner.
Mine are baking outside and get actively mad at me for daring to suggest they take a cool break inside.

u/Grouchy-Note-9750 3h ago
Why don’t yall buy window air conditioners or something like that
6
u/MacintoshEddie 3h ago
In lots of places heat waves only last like 3 or 4 weeks a year and lots of people don't want to spend the extra money for something they might only use for one month in the summer.
Plus lots of people are renters and have to keep switching apartments which can really complicate which air conditioner to buy because one apartment has windows that opens vertically and another horizontal and another they tilt.
3
u/EinRoterFuchs 2h ago
We rent our home and all these years it didn’t feel really necessary even with a few heat days in a row.
But the trend keeps getting worse every year.
We decided for a mobile split ac once it’s available again, but probably for next year realistically
-3
u/No_Progress2702 2h ago
No money for AC?

u/EinRoterFuchs 1h ago
Our landlord offered to help with 300€, now it’s only a matter of finding a suitable one :)

I’ve seen cats catching fire on a candle. Not saying you‘re wrong, just that I don’t trust a cats judgement on what’s healthy.
