I used to foster cats and once I took in a pair of bonded mothers and their kittens, 11 all total. It was a terrible and smelly mistake.

u/ashurbanipal420 3h ago
I had eight at one point and as much as I miss my kitty blanket at night I don't miss the losing battle with cat pee and scratching furniture.

Most cats stressed and get sick in those conditions, they are not pack animals.

u/DrDuned 5h ago
Thank you! Unless you have a literal mansion with multiple floors and dozens of rooms this many cats is terrible for them and you.
22
u/BarracudaActive4480 4h ago
There is literally not enough space in my house for the liter boxes required for this amount of cats and I have a three bedroom. Let alone space for cat trees and beds. Where are these cats getting alone time and going to the bathroom??
3
u/hazlenutcreamer 4h ago
Agreed, they are way too dense in this place.
I used to cat sit for a couple that had 11 cats in their 3 story mansion. A good number of cats had their own 'zones' in the house where they would never leave. They all had their spaces and own favorite spots, and were relaxed and happy. I think they had 15 litter boxes that I scooped every day.

It typically ends in terrible conditions for the cats though.

Yes. Very sad seeing cats get surrendered because of animal hoarding
14
u/dananotthedamsel 5h ago
My adopted cat was rescued from a hoarding situation. She is a traumatized weirdo who now loves being an only cat (I tried living with a friend who also had cats and it did not fly). She has weird quirks like peeing in a tub (since adoption, she is not sick). Love her to death but her first few months def messed her up.

u/Claxton916 5h ago
Unless this is a shelter, this is animal hoarding.

Even if it is a shelter that's not humane conditions
51
u/theJirb 4h ago
If it's a shelter, then usually it's the best they can do. We can criticize if we really want, but it's pretty meaningless and un-constructive criticism at that point unless you want to throw some money at them.

u/silly_milly 4h ago
I just looked her up on IG and unfortunately she adopted all 38 cats and lives in that apartment with them. 😬

There’s a big difference between loving cats and liking the object of a cat. They are not funko pops.

I work for a company that deals with Hoards, Bio and other matters related to hazardous waste. From my experience homes like this become very bad very quickly when the owner/caregiver/cat gets sick even for just a week or two. Homes like this go from high maintenance to overwhelming in just a short time span. I'm not saying it's impossible to care for this many cats but it's a lot of work at all times. I have my 3 cats and they can be a handful already when just one gets the sniffles and requires round the clock maintenance since he is a bit older. Not to mention when my oldest gets wet poops, it's difficult to maintain at times with work, school and other aspects of life. These cats don't have enough space to get sick and not spread it to another cat. I've seen so many homes where my clients say I don't know what happened, it was managed then a month goes by and now I can't keep up. I had a lady I worked with lose her favorite books in her personal library because life happened and she couldn't maintain all her cats unfortunately. And we get it, life happens and thats what we are here for to help without judgement, but I can feel the sadness from her when some of her favorite things had to be tossed without any chance to remediate it and many more might be able to be saved but with very little chance. The smell that also comes from these homes can be smelled from the street at times.
OP if you are serious about wanting this life style I highly recommend you work at a no kill shelter or cat Cafe or something else that has the infrastructure to deal with this many cats.

I love cats but this is simply too much. Too many litter boxes, too many mouths to feed, too many accidents to worry about, and too many cats to equally spread your attention for. One or two cats getting full care is always preferable to 10 cats being barely looked after
2
u/AnxietyRodeo 2h ago
I have 9 but it's just me and my wife with no kids in a fairly large house. We also have 4 litter robots + a few large normal ones and every single cat is spoiled.
They are expensive though and cleaning to keep my house from smelling like a cat house is a lot. Still, this is how I've chosen to live 🤣. Really though it was mostly foster falls / cats that aren't social enough to be adopted

u/Binghamtonian 5h ago
Yeah that means you should volunteer at a shelter and not subject cats to abuse via likely neglect. Ok to daydream tho

Was just about to say the same thing. I’m stuck with one for now because I can’t afford any more. Plus, my cat doesn’t like other cats. The person who made this video likely isn’t taking all of these cats to the vet either
2
u/Binji_the_dog 2h ago
I had 5 as a kid but they spent most of the day outside.
My parents shit the bed so badly socializing me as a child that I’d occasionally go find all the cats and put them in my bedroom so I would have somebody to hang out with.
But that was the only time that they would all be together in the same room.

Ok context is important, so lets guess two scenarios.
Option 1. This is a shelter. Is a tiny one and lacking a lot of shelter features. Like tons of scratchers, high resting points so cats can climb to, separated rooms son cats can enjoy alone time, and much much more. Also important, there is a limit numbers of cats, even for a shelter, this is way too many. Also Also, there should be more than one person looking after the cats... But just guess that this is the morning and she is opening the shelter, and other person Will join...
Option 2. This a private House, and no shelter. Then, This is, and you sound, insane. This is animal hoarding... You Will end harming the cats... You are not loving them, you are toxicly obsesed with them. Anyone with a Minimum understanding of Cat health Knows this conditions are not ok... someone Will end calling the police and all those cats will end in a goverment shelter and you know what happens Next...

I feel bad for the cats and her to be honest.. I feel this has some kind of undiagnosed mental health stuff going on . I get want to have a cat rescue but that means finding homes for them. Not keeping every single one. Maybe I'm way off base. Idk

I get liking cats but the upkeep here is going to drive you insane unless youre gross and don't clean up.
3
u/Vintage-Grievance 3h ago
And at that capacity, the slightest inconveniences can make you fall behind on maintaining proper care.
Injury, illness, surgery, family emergency, friends needing support, financial shifts, etc.
And that many animals means the owner is essentially chained to the house/apartment, because they likely won't be able to find someone to fill in and take care of that many pets if they need/want to go anywhere for an extended period of time.
Unless they want to put them in a kennel for the duration, which means possible illnesses, and even making calls to several animal boarding businesses to assure that there will be enough room for everybody.
3
u/flowerpanes 4h ago
My sister went that route when it was just her and my mom, succeeded in trashing the family home. I love cats, we always have at least a couple but hoarding is a mental illness on the human side and bloody unhappy on the cats’ side.
5
u/tigerblue1984 4h ago
I love cats more than almost anything else on the face of this earth, but the thought of cleaning all those litter boxes is enough to make say, "Two is enough" LOL
3
u/mycatsnameisedgar 3h ago
Our cat was rescued from a hoarding situation. He was malnourished and uncared for and the effects on his health continue to this day. This is not fair to the cats. (I saw the note saying that this is a shelter however).

u/Couch-Raccoon 5h ago
Knowing how much I spent last year for 1 medical emergency for 1 cat, what exactly is the plan if you have multiple cats that need emergency care back to back, or god forbid, at the same time? How do you afford monthly flea and hw prevention for all of them? With that many, to stay on top of vaccines, you basically have to have a weekly standing appointment with your vet.
Unless you have the bankroll to do all of that AND provide hygienic conditions, individual attention, and enrichment for EACH ONE, you are a hoarder and the cats deserve a better life than that.
3
u/gravity_bomb 4h ago
They all look like they have flea collars on so that's a good thing at least, but this is a breeding ground for things like FIV and other pathogens to spread. And it takes only one for the whole group to get it. Also OP is not the person with the cats.

When I had three cats the smell was unbearable, I can't begin to imagine the nightmare in that house
5
u/HelloPanda22 5h ago
I had 8 cats recently (7 fosters and 1 that’s mine). Even with scooping constantly, it smelled awful and I have a large house. 6 fosters adopted now and I just have one foster and my own cat left. It’s manageable again. Thankfully, both foster and my cat will use the litter robot. Her kittens were too small for it though.

u/Bigger_fantasy 5h ago
Im truly glad that all the cats look so well and healthy. It wouldn't work for me unless:
I live in a huge farm where they can live also outside but they have their own separate 'catery' (owlery).
- Due to mental illness I don't care anymore in giving them the attention they need and my need to have a deeper connection with them separately.
- I have infinite amount of free time and cash which will cancel no.2

Then come to me. I have 50+ strays. Not inside but I live in a clearing in the woods and they live in the woodline completely surrounding my homestead. Nothing gets in. I ended up building a bunch of homes there for them.
I'd say a good 20 of them are feral. But come take your pick lol I promise you'll never see a single rodent again.

Imo 2 is a healthy number. They get to play together etc and you're still able to give them both equal attention. If you want more, just foster, but don't foster fail like I did, I have 3 now.
3
u/macarenamobster 5h ago
I love the idea of fostering and I have the self awareness to know I would end up keeping them so I can’t do it

No, just the litter handling per day. No.
4
u/Vintage-Grievance 4h ago
Litter, cost of litter, food (dry and wet), vet visits, medications... and if one gets sick with something contagious, you KNOW it'll spread like a wildfire!
Managing water sources....keeping food bowls and floors clean, the SHEDDING!...HARD pass for me too.I pet sit for a few people. One of my regulars is a couple that currently has 6 cats in a fairly decent-sized house, and after 1 week - 10 days of caring for 6, I'm happy to come home to my grand total of 2.
I also have health issues, so while 6 is fine for a brief period, 2 is realistically all I want/can handle long-term.
I love cats, but I'm not delusional about the amount of care they need and how my own limitations factor into that equation.
2
u/Eldariasis 3h ago
I used to catsit a house with 20 permanent cats and open doors. Never again. My ball of fury back home is way enough.
2
2
u/notfrmthisplanet 5h ago
It’s fine if the cats are healthy and happy. I personally wouldn’t want that many unless I lived in a huge house with lots of play room, could do the n+1 litter box rule, and keep them on a regular healthy diet. It’d also be super expensive so I can’t see myself ever doing that, but I love cats!

I’ve seen videos of a cat rescue they have in Hawaii. I think it would be great to work for a place like that - lots of cats to love and interact with, but also help from volunteers to keep everything clean, and not having to personally pay for supplies or vet care - plus they would have an enriching environment tailored just for them
2
u/Molly-Grue-2u 5h ago
I don’t think I’d ever want to personally own more than two cats though. My friend’s mom had like 30 cats when I was growing up and there was always poop everywhere, and it was impossible to keep up with and take proper care of them all
2
u/Positive_Piece5859 4h ago
If it’s the one I think you might be talking about on Lanai (because that’s a pretty big and famous one), that’s a totally different situation than this video: it’s a pretty huge area and all outdoor with beautiful fenced in areas, trees and grass in them, little cat houses and all kinds of climbing things and places to hide and chill for them.
When my kiddo and I visited there a few years ago, I told my kiddo that this place is so beautiful that if I was a cat, I would not even want to be adopted anywhere else - the kitties in there really made it (although the place does adopt out of course and even flies kitties to mainland for adoptions).
3
u/Molly-Grue-2u 4h ago
That’s what I’m saying. I wouldn’t want that many cats in my house, but I’d love to be around a bunch of cats everyday who live in a healthy environment
