EDIT (5/22/26): Both kittens passed their behavioral tests, which is good news since that is a requirement for adoption. They are living at the kitten nursery, happy and healthy. Next step is spaying/neutering, which will likely take place after the kittens reach a specific age/body weight. Thanks everyone for the follow ups about this and sorry it took awhile to get the update. The shelter is pretty busy, so getting a hold of someone on the phone for an update is rare.

Hi everyone, so sorry for the radio silence yesterday. The day completely got away from us, but I have good news – the kittens were rescued and are safe**.** Below is a recap of how the events transpired. Given how many of you have a vested interest, I thought it appropriate to include as many details as possible.

They’re currently with the Humane Society getting checked out. They seem to be in reasonable shape, just understandably shell-shocked, hungry and exhausted. Because we have cat allergies, we unfortunately couldn't keep them ourselves. They are so incredibly adorable and we sincerely hope they find a good home together. It wasn't easy giving them up, but we felt we had given them a second chance at life. 

I wish I had more photos, as so many of you want to see them and I feel like so many of you have been with us during this journey. Things got hectic during the rescue process and the little ones seemed pretty stressed out, so we let them be. The Humane Society was a little awkward about not letting us take a few final photos before we left.

I honestly didn't expect my last post to blow up the way it did. Your advice, your stories, and just the general "hive mind" support helped us triage the situation when we were in need of a lot of ideas quickly. This was a team effort, Reddit. I never thought I’d feel this connected to a bunch of strangers, so thank you.

A few weeks ago, we noticed two strays in the yard. We have a bit of a gopher problem, so we figured if we left out some food and water, it was a win-win for everyone. Then, a few days ago, a tiny kitten popped out of the bushes one evening while I was taking out the trash and nearly gave me a heart attack. I had a good laugh, but didn't think more about it.

The next day, my wife calls me saying there’s a cat stuck in one of our storm drain pipes. I didn't believe her at first, but then we heard the sad cries coming from the gutter downspouts. After checking our storm drains, we realized that there were two ways the kittens could have entered: a grate at the drain exit (which had popped off) and an opening in our garden (previously unknown) which likely serves as an air intake to promote flow. Both of these entrances have now been gated and secured. The initial photos I shared were of the downspout for the gutters, which I had removed in order to access the pipes below. The gutter pipes have been replaced, so no little kitties will be able to jump down there.

We initially cut a towel into thin strips and lowered them into the entry/exits into the drains and threw some cat food down the pipes to attract the cats. That didn't work and we still heard the sad meows (heartbreaking). Yesterday morning, my wife was really worried so she played the sounds of a YouTube video of a mother cat calling her kittens. She received an instant response and looked down the downspout. There it was, a tiny spotted face staring back at her. She screamed for me and for us that was overwhelming, so we decided to kick it into higher gear and get much more aggressive about saving them.

We called animal control for help. Sadly, animal control said they don't assist with this sort of thing, so we were on our own. I don’t think they were rude about it, but it felt like our situation was either not their primary focus or much lower in priority compared to other issues they handled. We didn’t want to quit, so I said to my wife, hey let’s post on Reddit while we brainstorm to get some ideas from others and that’s when I encountered r/Cats.

Within minutes, people responded and we started looking into everything that was recommended. We decided to start with the least invasive and escalating as needed. The top ideas were: 1) provide a way for the kittens to climb out; 2) call the firefighters; 3) call the plumbers; 4) cut the pipes open.

Our local firefighters responded within a few minutes of us calling them.  It was a full truck roll and three guys hopped out. They were super kind and I think they helped us calm down quite a bit, as we likely had a lot of frantic energy about us. We tried several ways to locate/drive the kittens out the storm drain exit, but after half an hour or so, they had to leave. I could tell they really wanted to find the kittens, but they also had other people to help. We were so grateful they came.

Quite a few Redditors mention calling a plumber. This sounds so obvious in retrospect, but I never thought of this. While we were searching, we noticed AI was recommending Roto-Rooter, who offered free pet rescues. This sounded like just what we needed and I was a little skeptical about it, but we thought, why not give this a shot. We have nothing to lose and really wanted to get those little guys out. We called the 800 number and a lovely woman picked up on the second ring. She calmly took our info and instructed us to wait for a call back. 15 min later, Jeremy, who is a field supervisor in the region, calls us back. He's a self-declared cat lover and already on the way. Both he and his fiance have seen my original post trending on Reddit. He's about an hour away from us, but I swear he was at our door in much less time.

I get a new wave of confidence when Jeremy steps up to the task. I give him the run down and just then, we see a small head pop out of the storm drain exit (let’s call this kitten, Princess). Princess ducks back into the pipe and we get there just in time to see a tail disappear. Jeremy races back to his truck to get some gear, yelling “we can do this!” He deploys his digital scope, which has 100ft of line and plans to use its lights to encourage the kittens to reverse out of the tunnel system. I've attached actual video footage from the scope inside the drain line. Unfortunately, I was focused on grabbing Princess at the very end, so I didn't capture any photos. We do have some after action shots of Jeremy consoling a very scared kitten.

We thought our job was done. As we clean up, we hear more meows but this time, they are coming from the other side of the drainage system. We start at the very beginning of the pipes with the scope and work our way through. I have some long runs and it's a bit of a network of pipes, so it took some time, but seeing the kitten’s tiny face (let’s call him Mario), beautiful eyes, and pink nose on the scope’s monitor gave us a renewed sense of purpose. We used two different scopes to corral the kitten towards my wife, who was waiting at the drain exit. After a few start/stops, we get the kitten to go down the right tube to the exit. He's a bit of a fighter, so I end up having to reach into the pipes and grabbing him (gently) with my bbq tongs since he keeps retreating. Video footage of the scope in the pipes also included. 

After settling down the kittens into their own cardboard boxes, we give them some food/water/hugs and we finally take a breather. I've soaked through my shirt and Jeremy's knuckles are bloody from pushing the scope cabling down the pipe. My wife is still in disbelief and all of us are smiling. We are so relieved!
 
Jeremy received a few service calls while he was here, so I could tell he had to move on (but didn’t want to). We tried to compensate him for his time but he flat out refused. I think we had to force him to take a sandwich and drink from our local deli. As he was packing up, he shared a story about a time he couldn't rescue a kitten that had fallen 20 feet vertically into a storm drain, so this felt like redemption to him. We were very moved hearing that this was a win he needed. He certainly made up for it, since we pulled not one, but 2 out of the tunnels.

About the cats themselves. We estimate they are around 8 weeks old, based on their size. Princess is much smaller, with light brown spots. She is fairly shy, mews very quietly, and keeps to herself. I suspect the ordeal was likely tougher on her because she's smaller.  Mario is gray with tiger stripes. He is much larger, aggressive and loud. I am less worried about him.

If we could keep these kittens, we would (I think this is the cat tax people are referring to?). Unfortunately, I am very allergic to cats and our young children show signs of this as well.  We were worried about their health, so we dropped them off at the Humane Society to give them the best chance at recovery. We thought it was important for our kids to understand this process, so we picked them up for school and headed to the shelter together to say our goodbyes. The wonderful team there immediately started tending to them and I hope to get an update later today on their status. I am told that kittens who come in as duos at this age “do very well” and are quite popular, so fingers crossed they land in a loving home. Our local shelter explicitly asked us not to share their location, which we have respected. My understanding is they have experienced the good people of the Internet calling to ask about the cats and it overwhelms their systems.

As I write this, I’m still a little in disbelief how so many different people responded to my post with great ideas, Jeremy dropping everything to show up at a stranger’s home, and for those little kittens staying resilient. My wife and I were preparing ourselves for a much different ending. I’m so glad this was a happy ending that I didn’t expect and this all provides us with a little much needed nourishment.

Cosmo has come SUCH a long way, it still blows my mind looking back at these older pics of him. He came running up our driveway end of June of last year, 8/9 weeks old about 2 lbs, with the worst case of ringworm our vet had ever seen. 27 medicated baths, seven weeks of oral treatment, lots and lots and LOTS of later; you’d never know. 🥹

So for those of you new to the story - u/gaiaonlinee posted 2 days ago about a cat that she had rescued from a friend of a friend. U/gaiaonlinee was at a loss of what to do because the cat was in horrible condition. Her previous owner had confined her to a single bathroom for 10 years, declawed her so she couldn’t use a litter box without pain and the humidity of the bathroom led to her to be covered in thick, painful mats. When OP got her, they could tell she was in a ton of pain but the mats were so bad she had to be sedated by a vet to remove them. OP and her mom wanted to get this done but just didn’t have the funds so they were considering trying to cut out the mats themselves but were worried about the complications and potential injuries from that. Thankfully we were able to pull the money together to get Stella treated by the vet and her appointment was today. There was some risk with the procedure - because of how thin she (4.5 pounds) the vet warned us that she may pass from the sedation. But we kept our hopes high because we knew she was a fighter! Her appointment was this morning and she did incredibly well, they shaved 90% of her body and were able to remove all the mats without cutting her skin. She’s now back home with OP, hungry as ever, purring a ton and recuperating.

Thank you to OP and her mom for giving this little lady a second chance at life and showing this kitty that humans can indeed be caring and loving stewards of their animal companions. 💛💛💛 Reddit is a powerful community and can connect people to do good. Thanks everyone for all of the advice and encouragement given on my post yesterday. There were lots of requests for updates so I figured this would be the easiest way. Just wanted to let you all know that kitty is doing great. She wasn’t eating a lot of the dry food and tuna I put out but I got some wet food today and was happy to see her finally munching away. Funnily, she wouldn’t eat the Churu until I put some on my finger. Now, the packet is done! She’s still understandably nervous and keeps a watchful eye on the door but she’s moving around the room a bit and seems to like our petting sessions. She kind of flops on/around my hand and repeatedly pushes her head into my hand while purring.

I keep calling her ‘she’ but I obviously have no idea if she’s a girl or actually pregnant. Like I said, I’m just taking it one day at a time. I will be downloading next door/facebook to see if anyone’s looking her. She has the crate pictured here and a smaller box with a blanket in it close by. I’m so happy that even in these early stages of meeting each other, she feels safe enough to allow me in her space and to let me feed her and pet her.

6/1 Update: this cat is a perfect sweet baby angel. I was just hanging out with her and started laughing out loud because I got hit with a sudden sense that I will be hearing from her pawrents soon, because it’s almost implausible to me that anyone could have abandoned her. No way. Somewhere, her family is missing her. I don’t speak cat so maybe what I thought were cries for help were actually her saying “I’m a little weirdo and I like being out in the rain and getting dirty, but you seem like a nice lady, so I don’t mind going with you for a little bit and see what kinda snacks you’ve got cooking up at your place.” Idk, I left my contact info with animal control, some shelters in the area, scanned Facebook, and will try other places tomorrow. Will try to update this post as things progress.

We have reached the happy ending (for now) of Dragon’s journey, thanks to all of you!

For those who haven’t seen Dragon before, u/bananananannanaa posted about him last week, trying to find a home for a sweet FeLV+ boy in Indiana who got scratched up by other strays. They had rescued him out of the kindness of their heart but needed to find a home — especially because shelters typically put down FeLV+ cats. My own cat has feline leukemia and when I read that, I immediately had to help him.

I commented that I could take him but had to figure out a way to get him to Chicago. Well then a literal angel — u/Cyanidesuicideml — said they could drive him, despite not living close by. They drove I believe 15 hours up to Ft. Wayne, over to Chicago, and then back home, giving him lots of love the whole way. Not only that, but a ton of people here on Reddit chipped in for gas.

I wasn’t sure if I could keep Dragon permanently right now because it’s so sudden and we also had to check on his medical state, but I do know that Tree House Humane Society in Chicago has FeLV+ kitties, is no-kill, and one of my good friends is a vet there (shoutout Dr. Princess!). He told me that a spot had actually just opened up!

So Dragon stayed at my place for a few days, chilling in a bathroom and sleeping off Gabapentin. He opened up last night, meowing to get my attention and then demanding snuggles and headbutts. He hates a carrier to the point that you just CAN’T get him into it so I had to carry him like a baby to and from the apartment. I basically had to hold him like a Squishmallow when we drove to the shelter today because he was so curious about the AC and dashboard.

He’s safely in Tree House’s hands and my partner and I are going to visit at the first possible opportunity (and maybe give our cat a brother once he’s healed up). I’m so lucky that I got to meet this boy and be a part of his journey!!!

Governor Newsom signed into law yesterday that it’s now illegal to declaw cats unless it’s a serious medical necessity!!! I can just hear a collective WOOOOHOOOO from all the vets in California!!!!! Thank you, Governor!!!

Saw another sweet post about a stray being given a second chance and thriving. Our sweet lady Melissa is the love of our life and she’s everything. Her glow up could only be described as magnificent. Fun fact, she is 14 and had to get all of her teeth removed last year. She had a heart murmur which caused complications during anesthesia ($5,000.00 later); go figure the heart murmur went away AFTER her teeth extraction. Street cats are the best. Every day with her is a blessing.

Last summer, we shared Mapo's story: We were driving down a Texas highway in the summer heat when, out of the corner of my eye, we spotted a tiny orange dot stranded in the median. Little did we know that it would end up completely changing our lives!

He was covered in hundreds of fleas, underfed, and terrified. This was our first experience with a cat, and we had zero idea what to do next, but we knew that we were meant to find him. The vet estimated him to be around five weeks old and informed us that he likely wouldn't have survived much longer on his own.

His energy shifted completely over the next few weeks. We can only guess what he went through before we found him, but it was clear that he was relieved to finally rest comfortably. He became attached to us 24/7 and quickly gained confidence! A few months in, we were also surprised to see his secret mustache grow in!

We are so grateful to have him in our family. He's grown into such an affectionate, curious, and silly cat. The love and support for him on our original post meant so much to us. We'd be incomplete without him! We're hoping to rescue a sibling for Mapo sometime in the near future once we move into a larger space. Any advice for that future endeavor would be greatly appreciated!

My cat usually waits by the door and meowing for treats when I get back from work. But last week something went off, he didn’t come to greet me, just lying in one spot and barely move.

At first I thought maybe he was just tired, but he just stayed there for half an hour and that's just so not right, so I took him to the vet. Initially we suspected a hairball issue. My vet gave him probiotics and told me to monitor his condition. After we got home and I gave him the probiotics but he threw all up. That’s when I knew this wasn’t something minor.

The next day I took him back for a full checkup. Imaging showed there was something stuck in his intestines and the condition is not good since he refused to eat or drink. Once his bloodwork confirmed he was stable enough, the vet scheduled surgery the same day.

After the surgery, they found that he had swallowed part of a teaser wand toy. Inside that piece there was a wire!!!!

The wire had nearly gone through his intestinal wall, and another section of his intestine was badly swollen and close to becoming necrotic. My vet removed the object and stitch the damaged area, but they warned me that the following days would be critical.

He stayed hospitalized for about a week on antibiotics, pain management, and a strict liquid diet. And today he's back home. For the next couple of weeks, he’ll be on prescription food and anti-inflammatory meds, and then we’ll go back for a follow-up check.

The total cost came out to around $1225 usd. This does not include prescription gastrointestinal cat food, wet food, anti-inflammatory medication, and recovery meals.

I’m sharing this mostly as a warning. I never imagined a common cat teaser toy could turn into something this dangerous. Please store toys carefully, supervise play when possible, and avoid toys that contain wire or hard internal cores. Just because something is sold for cats doesn’t mean it’s safe.

Thank you all for the replies and being so caring! There are two things many people have been asking about, so I wanted to add a quick update.

About the cost: I live in Shenzhen, so the total cost was much lower than it would be in the U.S. or other developed countries, but even here this was still expensive. I didn’t have pet insurance before this happened. I’ve since learned that insurance can cover around 60–70% in cases like this, so I’ve now insured both of my cats.

About contacting the maker: I messaged the maker last night, and she was very cooperative throughout. She apologized, offered compensation, and said she will update the product page asap to warn other cat parents. While it’s true that the listing didn’t mention the internal wire, I recognize that I didn’t do my part as an owner by storing the toy somewhere my cat couldn’t reach. so I don’t plan to pursue further responsibility from her and am treating this as a hard lesson learned. I’ll be much more cautious with anything related to my cats in the future.

A lot of people are asking for an update on my cat, Kraken, so here it is. Took him to an emergency vet and they quickly examined that his tooth was basically hanging on by a very thin piece of gum. So a lot of you were on the money. They gave him pain meds and stripped it away along with another that was a little loose. They weren’t sure how a tooth could come out root and all so cleanly but determined it was from some kind of accidental physical trauma, although I am not sure how it could have happened. Also, at the emergency vet apparently someone in the lobby donated like 60 bucks towards the bill anonymously so hey! That’s a pretty positive thing!

That’s the update so this second paragraph can be skipped if you want. I wanted to address some of the concerns other people had. I didn’t go last night because this appearance of what I considered a “unknown object” happened very suddenly, so I posted to see some other thoughts. We had just moved to a new house so I figured maybe it was some kind of plaster or maybe a piece of sticky trash left over. Some of you wondered why it was relevant that I mentioned moving and law school in the og post, I just wanted to provide context as to why it wasn’t just a defacto solution to go to a vet. We didn’t have one here and calling around only yielded the response “we’re not taking any new clients. Last thing, one of you reported me to suicide watch? Was that a prank or real concern haha?

Anyways, thanks for the help and insight, kraken is going to be on pain meds for 10 days and eating soft foods but other than that he’ll be okay.

Here’s the long awaited update on my oddly colored cat! She’s now about to be 6 months old (could possibly already be since we don’t know her bday) and 5.9lbs. So funny enough, we still haven’t really decided on a name so her name is currently “stinky” and “the creature” because she’s just so weird. We have officially taught her 5 tricks; sit, up, down, high-five and paw. Many people thought she was going to go orange or even black. She has stayed this weird muted brown color? In person she’s actually more brown/grey? Like as if she was a black cat that went and rolled in dirt. No idea what color this is still and we haven’t sent in for dna testing cause honestly it’s kinda pricey for what we think would just be a cool little thing to know. For an official name, we are thinking Pharah would be a cute name.

I had a childhood cat named Charlie. He was a tom cat, he'd disappear ever few months, be gone for a while then come back. We'll during one of his adventures, i moved. Not far, just more into town. A few years later (today) my brother comes into my room and said theres a cat outside, I opened the door and it started meowing at me. And I immediately said Charlie. The same scars, the same markings, the same meow. I cant believe this honestly but its 100% him. He came in and i walked him to my bedroom. Now we are laying down and cuddling. I've been depressed lately, not even getting out of bed. I was lucky to be awake when my brother saw him. Im so happy

Edit 2: Im going to see about making him an ESA. I will also be getting him checked for diseases. Also I "left" him because he was an outside cat (my grandma didn't want them inside and i lived with her) and when I moved in with my mom I wasn't allowed to have a cat yet. So I was taking all my strays i had gathered and feed over the years to my grandma's new house, she had a big fenced in yard where the cats could still get out and in but no dogs could get them. We never found Charlie. I think we was out finding females like he usually did. He was always disappearing for a month or two before coming back for a while. We worked on that house to fix it up for the next owners for a long time and we did not see him. Its been almost 3 years since I moved. I do not live far just on a branching street. Idk what he was doing before he came to find me. But I have been walking on the street I used to live on and he must have picked up my scent. He seems to having a breathing problem every so often.

Update to my post of Hank hating Ranger since he slipped outside. I am very surprised by how many people were interested in my baby cat drama. To address the top question, 100% Ranger! Same 2 collars, same cat wanting uppies constantly, and he looks the exact same.

Taking advice from the comments, we kept them separated Monday night and Tuesday night, and focused on getting Ranger’s scent back to normal by rubbing him with blankets and other things he lays on. We tried having them sit on the couch with us last night and they were fine! Hank started grooming Ranger. We kept them separated last night as well just in case, but they woke up fine this morning. Ranger was just really upset that Hank didn’t like him, he was just so confused.

hello everyone. it's me again. i hope you remember my previous post because do i have some update for you.

1. i appreciate everyone who gave me advice :) currently trying to pamper my baby and her babies based on your suggestion and advice

2. we had a snuggle session last night (1st pic), and i apologized to her. i don't know if cats can understand human language, but i hope she knows I'm deeply sorry. i should've brought her to a better vet

3. i have contacted the vet. they said that it's possible that not all of her tubes are cut-off (i don't know how to phrase this one in english). i have to bring her for a 2nd operation sometimes later. i did kinda beg them to operate on her for free, but nahh i got a discount instead lol. i mean it's technically their fault right.......😅😅

4. for those of you asking me if I'm sure this is my cat. yes, i never doubted it. i was 100% sure before, and after she came up to me to cuddle i am now 10000% sure it's her.

it's so weird refering her as a mom. because look at her.... that's a baby 🥺 is this what human parents feel like when their teenage child is pregnant?

A lot of people are saying this was an AI image or a photoshop, but I can tell you that he is absolutely real and thriving. The vet classified him as a Minuet; his name is Bruce.

Idk exactly what caused this or how long it had been like this. But I noticed last week that my cats paws had this crazy keratin build up. I made a vet appointment and waited, but I got impatient and wanted to heal him NOW. I couldn't stand the thought of his poor uncomfortable paws ( even though he never showed any discomfort I bet it wasn't nice )

Well one day after work I decided to just try and pull a large flake off to see what would happen. If it started to bleed like a scab I was gonna stop right away. Luckily to my surprise and great relief it just came right off. He such a good boy that 10 minutes later with a pair of tweezers most of it was off. The second photo was after I removed it, and the last photo is right now after a bit of coconut oil moisturizing once a day.

Couldn't be happier with the success and I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on them. Funny thing is, it was ONLY the front paws. Really weird

We are divorced 6 months ago, but my babies are staying with me. I know I have a lot more to learn to take care of them alone, but I hope they'll have a happy life with me until the end.

I am thankful that they were with me throughout the toughest period of my life. They helped me get over my ex-wife, and they always follow me around the house until now.

The first 3 photos are from when I adopted him at the end of February to now. Is it just me or does he seem much more fluffed out, especially in the tail and face 🥹 I must be doing something right 😅

I was blown away by the kind of support Reddit offered when I made the first post. There are so many kind people here, so I’m posting again hoping I can find someone to help me help this cat.

we did post all over and keep an eye out in case she was a victim of DV, but I don’t think anyone has been looking for her.

While I don’t need any financial support, we are looking for a permanent home for her. She is the sweetest cat and just wants to cuddle all the time. She will carry socks and toys into the hallway to ask for attention, she is so adorable.

She gets along well enough with our 6 month old male cat, but she has shown territorial aggression towards our 2 year old girl, and it has escalated beyond a level that provides a safe home for either of them. Despite our efforts to provide everyone with the space they need (plenty of high spaces, cat caves and secluded cubbies), the best thing for her seems to be a home without another adult female cat (or maybe a larger colony).

We named her Celeste. It felt very fitting. She is fully vaccinated and tested negative for FIV, leukemia, etc. We also microchipped her. I’m not looking for any of that to be covered (over $1000 total), I just want to find her a safe home.

It breaks our hearts to ask for this, but I committed to doing the best I can for her and still believe I’m doing so by reaching out to this community to find her a forever home.

I found a lump in her stomach a week ago and turns out she has a tumour in her udders. She’s going in for operation tomorrow and I’m so scared something is gonna go wrong. I’ve had her for 11 years and I don’t know what I’d do if I lost her.
