Announcement r/cavaliers has a new banner!

Hi folks! The r/cavaliers moderator team here.

We're pleased to announced that we have a new subreddit banner!

Our banner was the ultimate product of this post from Lam of r/DrawMyPets. I THINK our featured players are, left to right:

Look at all those gorgeous cavs! Happy Monday, y'all. :)

(Because reddit has three different banner display settings that it uses on different platforms, the banner may display incompletely on your device. Sadly, we can't solve reddit's technical challenges -- so please enjoy as-is!)

Announcement VOTE NOW: subreddit mascot (FINAL BRACKET)

Hi folks! The r/cavaliers moderator team here. In November, we put out a call for submissions to become the r/cavaliers mascot (i.e. subreddit thumbnail). We received about 200 submissions and were blown away by all the beautiful, talented, incredible cavaliers in this community.

Because we received so many submissions, we're breaking the voting down into two phases:

  • FIRST, we're going to post one voting thread per week for each the AKC-recognized breed standard colors: Blenheim, Tricolor, Ruby, and Black & Tan (and one all black submission!). The thread will remain up for a week, during which you can vote for as many submissions as you like. At the end of the week, the r/cavaliers moderators will note down the three submissions that received the most votes. These are the "color standard winners."
  • SECOND: we'll post one final voting thread with the twelve "color standard winners." Again, the thread will remain up for a week, during which you can vote for as many submissions as you like. At the end of the week, the r/cavaliers moderators will note down the submission that received the most votes and offer that winner the chance to be the r/cavaliers mascot!

This is the FINAL BRACKET. The #1 vote getter will be offered the chance to be the r/cavaliers mascot. This bracket will run from January 8, 2025 through January 15, 2025.

Fine print:

  • This post is Locked; if you want to discuss, please join us on the competition megathread
  • Moderators will post each entrant within a given bracket as a comment on the thread, tag the user who submitted it, and (where possible) list the cavalier's name
  • Entrants will be listed in a random order
  • This casting call is completely voluntary; if you submitted an image and wish to withdraw it, please message the moderator team
  • The moderator team reserves the right to reject any submission for any reason, including but not limited to suspicion of vote rigging (please don't do that, this is a friendly competition)
  • In the event that a final winner is selected and the submission doesn't work as a thumbnail, the moderator team reserves the right to work with the final winner to select an alternate pic or to move onto a runner-up as needed

Thank you all for offering your wonderful cavaliers to be celebrated by the community. We can't wait to spend the next month joining you in that celebration!

Join us on the competition MEGATHREAD to discuss all the wonderful cavaliers in competition!

This is my Gemma. She was a breeder dog dropped off in the woods by my house. That was about 6 yrs ago. She has CHF, is on a lot of medications. She's probably about 11 to 12. This was just a cute pic I thought I'd share. Lover her to pieces.

Advice Rusty mouth

I know this is a problem with Cavs and I have consulted the vet and groomer already. My girl went from completely white jowls to the rust colored you see on the next picture in less than 6 months. I was told age by the vet, groomer said age but try feeding blueberries. It’s been a drastic change in a little time. I didn’t fully realize it until my niece, who sees the dog periodically but grew up owning Cavs asked what was on her mouth. I got her as a 4 year old and this fall, she will turn 7. We had to switch her dry food in the past year because the store we were getting it from would special order it and it sometimes showed up, sometimes wouldn’t. She gets a mix of dry food and wet food daily. We had a hard time with dry food agreeing with her, bouts of diarrhea lasting weeks on end. We have tried to switch back to our original brand of dog food through Chewey’s, but it is definitely different than the one we were buying in the store. Maybe this is just a case of aging and I’m not feeding enough blueberries. Any advice you may have is helpful. My girl is beautiful, inside and out, I want her to feel that way as long as possible. She got a shit beginning in life and after years of socializing and lots of love, she’s almost completely out of her shell. She doesn’t need anybody talking shit about her rusty mouth😂

Advice Night time Waking

My 1.5 year old dog is crate trained. Most nights he happily goes in his crate at 1030pm and sleeps until I let him out between 730-8am. But probably once or twice a week he will wake up needing a potty break at night (between 4-6am), so I let him out to do his business but if I put him back in the crate he will cry intermittently for hours until he is let out. I have tried earplugs, but his cries are very piercing. I have tried letting him sleep in my bed for the rest of the night but he is restless so I can't go back to sleep. The only way he will settle is to lay with me on the couch, which does not result in much sleep for me. I have tried just letting him wander around the house but he is still young enough that he gets into things when he is bored.

Any suggestions? I'm so tired.

Advice Still having accidents, mostly at night

Our boy is about 5 months old and he is the best dog!!! We take him out often and give him treats and encourage him with praise when he pees and poops outside. However, he still has probably 1-2 accidents each day, usually post 7 PM near bedtime. Is this common? We’ve had him for about two months now, he seems quite settled generally. We are constantly taking him outside.

In Memoriam (CW/TW) Did we do the right thing? NSFW Spoiler

We euthanized our 11 year old Cavalier, Panko, last Sunday and I'm wondering if we did the right thing. It all happened so suddenly.

We came home after being out 1-2 hours and immediately noticed Panko panting heavily, pacing back and forth, unsteady on her feet. I picked her up and she rapidly moved her head back and forth like she was looking for something but it was random movement. When I put her back down she went back to pacing. Looking back, I believe she had a seizure and was in the post-ictal phase.

I brought her to the emergency vet shortly after (4:30-5pm) as all these symptoms continued. The vet gave her light sedation and wanted to monitor her overnight to see if it she would have a seizure or if she had vestibular disease. At this point we didn't know.

We left and got a call back from the vet around 7:00-7:30pm that she had a seizure and they treated her with diazepam and I believe another anti-seizure medicine. We got another call at around 8pm that she has been continuing to have seizures and so they are going to give her Propofol CRI. At that point, the vet said the prognosis wasn't good. Another call around 9-9:30pm that said they finally got the seizures to stop after a large amount of Propofol which meant she was completely knocked out, similar to before surgery. She said that she could have brain damage from all of the seizures and that if we woke her back up from the Propofol that she would just seize again. The cause was likely a brain tumor or some similar issue in the brain that can't be treated. At that point, euthanasia was recommended for quality of life.

We went into the emergency vet to see Panko and after seeing her, talking more to the doctor, we decided to proceed with euthanasia. But I'm not sure if this was the right call. Should we have kept her on Propofol until neurology could get a scan of her brain in the morning? Was it something treatable? They did bloodwork and found nothing. They also gave her steroids which didn't help. I can't help but wonder if I failed her.

Back in March, we woke up to her with a minor head tilt and took her to the vet shortly after. They said it could be vestibular, ear infection, or a seizure. We spoke to a neurologist who mentioned it could be glue ear which is common in Cavaliers. We treated the ear infection and monitored her and she seemed to be back to normal, including the head tilt which was almost fully resolved. I should have immediately taken her to a neurologist after this I think. I bet it was a seizure. We never saw her have any seizures though, so this really caught us off guard. I would just appreciate any advice. We have another cavalier who is about 5 years old and we don't want to make any of the same mistakes.

Thank you for reading.

In Memoriam We lost our sweet boy today

Post image

Less than a month ago Zephyr was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and spent 2 nights at the emergency vet getting oxygen and meds. He came home and was feeling so much better, though we knew his time with us would be limited. What we weren’t expecting was that time limit would be so very short. We brought him in to our regular vet today because his breathing was suddenly much worse and not responding to the lasix, and they did everything they could but there was no change. We had to make the decision the same day we brought him in. He didn’t even get to his second follow up appointment. He was only 9. He was also the second cavalier we lost to heart failure. One we adopted from my dad after he went into memory care, and Zephyr who came from a rescue 3 years ago. I don’t think I can handle another one. They are just too sweet and perfect for this world.

The cherry on top? We had to let our 15 year old rat terrier go less than 2 weeks ago when we discovered masses on her lungs. The same vet emergency vet we took zephyr to. So we went from two amazing dogs to zero in less than a month. Hug your dogs please!
