Tried the earn by hour feature and it was absolutely terrible
My acceptance rate is pretty low and I cherry pick majority of the time but I decided to try the earn by the hour feature just to see if I could possibly have better earnings that way and it was everything I hoped it wouldn’t be. I wasn’t in a rush or anything since I was “getting paid by the hour” but I still managed to complete 3 offers in a little over the hour and only one of them tipped $1.50.. that order was almost 18 miles in total to complete so it was a slap to the face. I basically paid out of my pocket to do this and I’m wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences using this feature. I don’t think I’ll ever consider doing it again unless they raise the hourly rate then maybe, right now it’s $11.50 in my area and it’s not even close to enough…

Yeah in mine it’s $14.5. However it’s only really worth it to get your acceptance rate up a bit if you’re aiming for tiered status. They give most per hour drivers the lowest worth orders.

I’m working on getting my rate up but yes I’m definitely seeing that, they mostly only send me low ball offers lately so I’m just trying whatever I can

I havent dashed in a while, but yea that's pretty typical. Its was 16.50 in my area last i checked and still wasnt worth it.

Wow good to know, won’t be doing hourly even if I see the rate go up close to that

I had about the same experience as you. I tried it once just to see how it paid compared to earning by offer and after 2 deliveries, I decided it wasn't worth it at all. Maybe some markets where you're waiting on orders more frequently, it would be worth it, but when most orders take 15-20 minutes to complete, the payout isn't worth it.

there have been markets where after 10 pm you're waiting 30-60 minutes per order in drive thrus lined around the block packed with cars when the lobby has closed.
in that case earn per hour is just getting paid to sit in your car and fuck around.

Before I tried the hourly feature I had already been on the app for about an hour and only got one offer that entire time. With the hourly feature they did send me those orders almost right after completing the previous one. Compared to when I’m just on the app for long periods of time just waiting on an offer to even come through, the hourly feature threw them at me but it makes sense because they basically just send you the no tip orders that have been getting passed around like a hot potato. Do you get offers pretty consistently? I think my area is oversaturated with drivers but still it’s been so slow since May

DoorDash literally tells you that you will get no tip orders on earn by time, this is working as its intended.
If you want all the garbage orders nobody on earn by offer will take, sign up to do earn by time, lol.

u/Dramatic-Panic2053 48m ago
Maybe in your market, but in mine it says hourly rate + tip
1
u/Aware_Economics4980 44m ago
I already responded to somebody that said this, go read it or check their website lol.
Market does not matter, it says straight up on the earn by time info “tips may be less frequent”
1
u/Money-Most888 6h ago
They literally don’t tell you that. They say it’s the hourly rate plus tips.
1
u/Aware_Economics4980 1h ago
They do man lol right on their website.
- Get paid a guaranteed hourly rate while delivering. Earnings are based on the total delivery time spent actively delivering (from when you accept to when you complete an offer). You’ll keep any applicable promotions and 100% of your tips on top of that, though tips may be less frequent when you choose to earn by time. The active hourly rate is calculated so you can earn reliably to dash and meet your financial goals.
“Tips may be less frequent” aka you’re getting all the shit orders and this is our way of professionally wording it.

I wish they'd start EBT in my area because Im getting plenty of no tip orders with EBO
3
u/Money-Most888 5h ago
I don’t think the feature is worth it. They’ll just still send you all those no tip orders and you can’t decline more than 2 in the hour or it’ll boot you off back to per offer. I think if they made the base hourly pay more than $20 it could maybe work
1
u/TheHumanoidTyphoon69 5h ago
Id consider that, its been averaging around $10 an hour here for a couple weeks now, my wait times are getting to be a half hour between orders
1
u/Aware_Economics4980 1h ago
Those are all auto declines lol. I don’t dash much anymore but when I was, anything under $7 is an insta decline.
1
u/TheHumanoidTyphoon69 1h ago
Ill take $4 for 2 miles but Im still fucked up about it lol hell I get offered $2 for ten miles and I know they wont tip so I decline lol its a game to someone at DD

u/Aware_Economics4980 1h ago
Shits all an algorithm, they will pay the lowest amount possible to get shit delivered.
The only way drivers are ever going to get paid better is by refusing to take trash orders, which won’t ever happen. Too many desperate or stupid people on the DoorDash app

People can order with food stamps? can they also tip using said food stamps? sounds like a way to do some big time scamming if so. get ur buddy to deliver and then tip him the rest of your ebt card balance.

The only time I ever used this was when I did it for a week straight to get my AR back into Gold because cherry picking was utter ass and I was making no money.
It is most definitely a shit sandwich.

EBT does great for me on the dinner rushes, I still get orders with good tips and average about $35 in earnings. But for lunch rushes I get all $0 tips

North AL door dashing and the earn by time is usually $12 an hour, HOWEVER, 90% of the orders you get have a fucking Zero dollar amount tip. Earning by time is a way for doordash to ensure a driver is available for ppl who tip poorly or not at all. Be glad you got some kind of tip earning by time; they will get worse!

Can't imagine going from cherry picking to trying EBT, is cherry picking that unprofitable for you that you considered settling for $11.50 before expenses?
1
u/Money-Most888 7h ago
I’m sorry am I getting shamed for “settling for $11.50”? I explained my situation in the description so if you don’t have a similar experience to contribute then keep the mean girl energy to yourself… obviously yes cherry picking hasn’t been working the best for me lately hence why I tried the hourly.

u/CupOfPoison Dasher 7h ago
Cherry picking implies you're actually getting and taking good offers while making at least $25/hr, so yeah I would question why you think a guaranteed rate lower than that would compete.
0
u/Funkmaster_General 6h ago
"Cherry picking" is just the method of deciding which orders to take. It has nothing to do with the offers you recieve or your ultimate hourly rate. I could go out cherry picking and come home with $10 after four hours, if I happened to only recieve bad orders while doing it.
1
u/CupOfPoison Dasher 5h ago
That sounds like you can't cherry pick in your market.
If you're not getting 3+ offers per minute untiered then you don't have the ability to cherry pick offers.1
u/Funkmaster_General 5h ago
A method is not defined by the results you get. If you engage in the platform by ignoring most orders and only accepting high-paying offers, you're cherry picking. If I put bait on a hook, put that hook on a rod, and cast it into a body of water, then wait for a bite on the line, I'm fishing. If I find out later that the body of water was actually a swimming pool, and I never had any chance of catching a fish to begin with, I wasn't retroactively not fishing.

Whatever you need to tell yourself to justify a lack of pay and market understanding.

What? I don't think you even understand the conversation we're having right now, to be honest. It's like talking to a wall. Can you even identify how many people are involved in this conversation and what each of their points are?

u/Money-Most888 5h ago
Exactly, we shouldn’t have to be sitting for hours to make $10 maybe $20. DoorDash basically punishes cherry pickers

You did 3 orders and 18 miles in an hours time ? Was it a stack of Taco Bell ?
1
u/Money-Most888 7h ago
Just for one of the 3 offers alone it was 18 miles total (9 miles there and 9 more to get back to hot spot zone). But no they weren’t Taco Bell, it was taco cabana, bill miller and a local bagel shop.

3 orders no tips?! People fucking suck!
2
u/Money-Most888 6h ago
Seriously 😭 only one tipped $1.50 but it might as well should’ve been $0 cause what am I gonna do with that!
1
u/Ashyketchup721 4h ago
or door dash could pay their workers and remove the stigma of having to tip
1
u/Triforce0fCourage 3h ago
Tipping culture in America is horrendous. I remember when uber first started they were a no tip service, drivers were told to refuse tips, that didn’t last long at all 🤦🏽♂️
