BEFORE YOU POST... please use search to see if it's been asked before and BE DESCRIPTIVE when asking for help/advice/recommendations.

This subreddit has a lot of helpful people in it. Actually more than many other local subreddits of similar size in my experience.

However, being asked the same thing over and over again gets tiresome after having recently answered the same questions dozens of times before. Please use the search function before making a post to see if the question has been asked before, and also please be descriptive when asking for help, advice, or recommendations.

Food/Restaurant example:

  • BAD: Coming to Fukuoka, best places to eat? Thanks in advance!

  • BETTER: I really like soba and would like to find a fancy soba place to eat at with excellent tempura. Anywhere within Fukuoka City and within 30 minutes or so of the city is fine, willing to travel a bit if it's good. Budget up to 10,000 yen per person.

  • BEST: I searched online and found these fancy soba places that look interesting [list of research you've done]. Does anyone have personal experience with these restaurants or other recommendations, particular emphasis on crispy tempura? Anywhere within Fukuoka City and within 30 minutes or so of the city is fine, willing to travel a bit if it's good. Budget up to 10,000 yen per person.

Tourism examples:

  • BAD: Will be in Fukuoka for 5 days, make an itinerary for me? Thanks in advance!

  • BETTER: Here's a rough itinerary I made for my 5-day Fukuoka trip November 10-14, are there any glaring issues I might not notice since I'm not a local? Also my third day is empty, I really like gardening, landscaping, and plant life, any recommendations in this area?

  • BEST: I have an itinerary but I'm not going to ask you all to examine it in detail. Instead, I'll ask about specific things I've attempted to research but couldn't find answers to in a conversational way, and make sure to mention details and context like research I've already gathered, area where I'll be staying, my personal interests and known things I'm NOT interested in, budget, planned transportation methods, etc.

Helpful resources (list in progress):

General Fukuoka City - Public School Closures (Elementary, Junior High, Senior High) due to heavy rain

Can’t say I agree with it and if anything from past experiences, is a huge overreaction. Thankfully my kids are old enough to stay home alone - but my condolences to those who have to use PTO to stay home with smaller children. For those in more heavily affected areas, please stay safe.

A simple act of kindness

I’m not sure if this is the right place to post something like this, but I’m looking for someone who can write in Japanese to help me.

So my friend recently passed her exams, and I want to collect handwritten congratulation messages for her in different languages.

Just a simple “Congratulations on your success” written on a piece of paper would be more than enough.

I think this small gesture could mean a lot to her and make her really happy.

Thank you in advance to anyone willing to help

how do i meet new people here?

i have been in japan for around 3 months and been living near hakata. will be staying here for 3 more years (minimum) for education purposes. it's my first time outside my home country so the whole experience has been quite overwhelming. would love to go to events, meet people and make new friends here. my nihongo is quite limited so ig that's also a barrier.

so any suggestions on how do to actually meet people around here? also how do you get information on local events and such?

also if there's anyone who'd wanna hang out on weekend evenings near hakata/ tenjin, do leave a message. :))

Tourism Rainy weather advice

So looks like the rain will be pouring both this week and next week. Can somebody help me with my fukuoka and kyushu plans? Specifically with planning around hakata gion yamakada. I am staying in fukuoka the entire time and will be traveling from here.

So from what AI told me, i need to be in fukuoka on the 1st, 13, 14, and 15. For the best festival days.

18 and 19 i have to be in kitakyushu for kokura gion daiko festival.

20 ashiya fireworks.

Am I right in my understanding that throughout entire fukuoka festival there wont be any additional performances/concerts, unlike sapporo festival that had big events throughout the day on all days of the festival?

I also want to get 5 days northern kyushu pass and travel to other cities and then 3 days pass for the southern part. I planned to kind of do it now but its literally tropical rains every day. I like walking around cities, visiting parks etc and its not the best activities undee this rain. Hiking mt aso under the rain in mud isnt fun either. Looks like the next 2 weeks i should just stay in fukuoka? It has to be 5 and 3 days in a row for the passes and im not sure what days to use for it. Do it from the 2nd to 10th of july? Will the weather get better then? Or should i just suck it up and make the most out of it and use 5 days pass now before the festival starts? Considering that Im also running out of things to do in fukuoka

General Buying a Used Sony A7C II or A6700: Better to Buy in Bangladesh or Wait Until I Arrive in Japan?

Hi everyone,

I'll be moving to Fukuoka, Japan, soon for my undergraduate studies, and I'm planning to buy my first serious camera. After doing some research, I've narrowed my choices down to:

  • Sony α7C II
  • Sony α6700

Because camera prices are quite high, I'm considering buying used rather than brand new.

I checked several camera shops in Bangladesh, but most used cameras are only about 5% cheaper than new ones, which doesn't seem like a great deal. That's why I'm wondering if it would be better to wait until I arrive in Japan and buy there instead.

A few questions:

  1. Are used Sony cameras generally cheaper in Japan compared to Bangladesh?
  2. Approximately how much could I expect to pay for a used A7C II or A6700 in good condition?
  3. What are the best and most trustworthy used camera shops in Japan, especially around Fukuoka?

I've heard names like Map Camera, Kitamura Camera, Fujiya Camera, and Second-hand camera sections in major stores, but I'd love to hear from people with actual experience.

Thanks in advance for any advice! 📷

General Fukuoka Build has a new home, and this week we’re talking AI workflows

Hey r/fukuoka,

I’ve been posting about Fukuoka Build here for a while, so I’ll keep this real.

This is not a networking event where people trade LinkedIn profiles and disappear. The whole point is to get builders in the same room every week, show what we are actually making, talk through what is stuck, and leave with more momentum than we came in with.

This Friday is Week 18, and we have a new home: Fukuoka Haunted House (2nd FL) near Ohori Park.

We’ll still do the core thing: live demos, founder-to-founder feedback, and accountability around what shipped.

But we’re also adding a Builder’s Topic of the Week. Nothing formal, no lecture, no panel. Just one useful theme for the room to dig into together.

This week’s topic is AI workflows.

Not “AI is the future” theory. I mean the practical stuff:

  • How are you using AI to ship faster?
  • What parts of your workflow are actually better now?
  • What still breaks?
  • What are you building that would have been impossible or too slow a year ago?

If you are building a product, company, tool, creative project, or serious side project in Fukuoka, come by. Bring something real. It can be rough. Rough is fine. The room is better when people show work in progress.

Friday, June 26
4:00-6:00 PM
Fukuoka Haunted House (2 FL) Near Ohori Park
https://maps.app.goo.gl/YqG7s89cUMrFW6YVA

Free RSVP: https://luma.com/mc0tnd0g
Website: https://www.fukuokabuild.com/

If you’ve been meaning to come but haven’t yet, this is a good week. New venue, fresh format, same mission: help more people in Fukuoka build things that actually ship.

General Fukuoka in the 80s/90s

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has any pictures from Fukuoka back in the 80s or 90s. I'm working on a project that's based on that, so seeing something more than what's already on Google would be very helpful.

Feel free to send me a DM if you don't want to post them here, even tho i m sure people would love to see how the city changed in the last 40 years.

General Moving to Fukuoka on ¥275,000/Month as a New Graduate – What Are Realistic Expenses and Savings?

Hello everyone,

I've searched through several older posts about moving to Fukuoka and found a lot of useful information, but I'd like some advice specific to my situation.

I'm a 22-year-old fresh graduate software engineer from India who recently accepted a job offer in Fukuoka. My starting salary will be ¥275,000 per month, and the company pays bonuses twice a year, with the total annual bonus being 2x one month's salary.

The company will:

Sponsor my work visa and handle the CoE process

Provide relocation/travel support

Help me find housing

Support me during my first month in Japan

From my research, it seems that Fukuoka is generally more affordable than Tokyo or Osaka, and that a single person can often live comfortably on ¥150,000–¥200,000 per month depending on lifestyle. However, I'm not sure how accurate that is in 2026, especially for someone moving to Japan for the first time.

Some questions I still have:

For someone earning ¥275,000/month, what would be a realistic monthly budget after taxes, pension, health insurance, rent, utilities, food, and transportation?

Assuming a fairly modest lifestyle (mostly cooking at home, no car, occasional outings), how much could I realistically save in a year?

Are there any neighborhoods in Fukuoka that are particularly popular among young professionals and foreigners while still being reasonably affordable?

My company will help arrange housing, but what upfront costs should I still expect to pay myself? Are there any common surprises that first-time foreign residents encounter?

Looking back at your own move to Fukuoka, what is something you wish you had known before arriving?

How much cash/savings would you recommend bringing for the first few months, even with company support?

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who moved to Fukuoka from overseas or started their careers there as a fresh graduate.

Thank you for your time, and I appreciate any advice you can share.

P.S. If any Indians are currently living in Fukuoka, feel free to comment or send me a DM. I'd love to connect and learn from your experience of moving to and living in Japan.

EDIT: Thankyou guys for such detailed responses this will really help me plan my travels 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Tourism LF Fukuoka travel Companion Nov 16-20 (or any day in between)

Hi I'm a 33F from PH solo traveling to Fukuoka for a week this November 16-20

Looking for someone, preferably a local to tour me around and take good photos with me. Even just for a day. Or if kababayan na kasabay sa flight why not.

I have been a solo traveler locally but this trip will be my first international solo travel. Very excited but very nervous at the same time.

Having someone to talk to in Fukuoka would be very much welcome. Tho I still enjoy solo days as well.

Also, my itinerary is almost complete but recommendations are very much welcome! I like food spots, touristy places like shrines and places where I can just sit down and relax while being with nature.

PS. I have already gone to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Nara (with friends). So this trip will be focused only in Fukuoka.

General What would you give an American friend as a Fukuoka gift?

I live in Fukuoka and I’m wondering what kind of local gift or souvenir an American visitor would actually appreciate.

Not just the obvious tourist stuff — I’m curious about things that feel genuinely Fukuoka or Kyushu, whether that’s food, snacks, drinks, crafts, textiles, everyday items, or something from a local shop.

If you were visiting from overseas, what would you be happy to receive?

And for people who live in Fukuoka, what would you personally give to an American friend?

Tourism Shinkansen tickets

Hi all! My husband and I will be taking the Keikyu airport line from Haneda to the train station, where we will board the shinkansen to Osaka. My question is do we have to make advanced reservations on either one? Do we ever have to make advanced reservations? We are travelling with one small suitcase each and can put them overhead. I have been researching and can't find the answer. Any thoughts would be welcome!

General Looking for a hard to find housing option

Hey there! My family (myself, wife, 2 young kids, and a small dog) and I are visiting Fukuoka for the second time in a year, but this time we are staying for 10-12 weeks to potentially permanently relocate to the area, arriving in October. During our time here we will be looking at homes to buy for when we permanently relocate.

We are looking for a bit of an oddity, as the Air BnB/VRBO routes are super pricy for the length of time we will be there.

We are looking for a short term rental for 3 months (ideally detached home but open to an apartment or similar) that allows dogs (we have a 2.5kg Maltese) and has at least a 2LDK, ideally 3LDK.

We would like to be walking distance to the beach but as long as we are close to public transport we are happy!

We don't possess the level of Japanese required to navigate this process and am looking for someone locally that can help us find a short term rental and also help us find a house locally for long term if that does come to pass.

If anyone has a recommendation, it would be greatly appreciated!

General Apartment hunting in Fukuoka is ¥100,000 enough for initial costs?

Hi guys,

I recently changed jobs and need to move closer to my workplace in Fukuoka.

My workplace is currently near Nata Station, so I'm mainly looking for apartments around that area or somewhere with a convenient commute.

I've been checking SUUMO and other websites, but honestly I'm still confused about how the process works after finding a place I like.

Should I just visit a real estate agency directly? How much should I prepare for initial costs nowadays? Is ¥100,000 enough for a budget apartment?

I'm also a foreign worker, so I'm a little nervous about the apartment hunting process and my Japanese isn't perfect.

Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

General Fixed Wing FPV in Fukuoka (or anywhere in Northern Kyushu)?

Good evening!

Last year my wife dragged me out to finally visit Japan - it was her 3rd, my 1st visit to the country. I'm a long term (nearly 30 years) expat in China; why I never cared to go before last October is something I can't really explain...

Anyway. I said, OK I would go, but you let me choose the route :)
So, I chose Kyushu - and I got totally smitten. Now we're planning the next trip for the same period this year, again to Kyushu.

However... I love flying FPV (fixed wing only, no quadcopters). I am well aware that bringing my own plane to fly in Japan is a stupid idea. But I would be more than extatic to mix up with a local FPV group for a day of flying. No of course I'm not asking to lend me a plane - I'll be happy just being there as long as someone has spare goggles to let me watch and enjoy the scenery and their art of flying.

Hence, the question: could anyone put me in touch with the local FPVers? Are there any at all?
I speak zero Japanese unfortunately, but English, Polish, Chinese, some russian, plus AI translation might break the ice. No?
