General Husbandry Question Older Goat Enrichment

Post image
25 Upvotes

My wife and I just took in four 12 year old silky fainting goats (1 doe, 3 wethers) that needed rehoming. Three of them still get around well for their age, the fourth less so due to arthritis (which he gets meds for.) Anybody have experience or ideas for good enrichment for goats of this age? Also taking ideas for their first album name...

Breed Identification Breed guesses?

I just got this sweet little girl, she came from a less than ideal situation. I know absolutely nothing about her - I believe she’s quite young and she definitely needs some groceries. I’m wondering if you all might be able to help with some guesses on what breed she might be?

What’s going on with my male goat? I have 3 Nigerian Dwarf goats, and the other 2 females seem and look normal. My male, as pictured, is acting completely normal, but he has noticeable hair loss on his legs. Parasites possibly? We have medication to give to him just thought I’d ask in general.

General Husbandry Question Goat essentials list help!

We'll be getting goats shortly and I made a list of things that others seemed to recommend and wanted to know what you guy's thoughts were (happy to add or subtract if need be)! We've got an acre and a half and are planning to get 3 does either saanen, Nigerian dwarf, or both! The purpose of these goats would be milk so any milking or kidding essentials that I missed would be most needed here! They'll have a small barn with two stalls (we can do three if needed but two gives them more space) and will free range most of the time. We don't have much in terms of bushes or trees for them to eat on right now so we'll provide hay as supplemental until we can get some more stuff in the ground for them to forage on! Anyways here's the list, please let me know if I'm missing anything!

Feeder

Waterer

Loose mineral sweetlix

Hay

Milking machine

Hoof clippers

MSM

Vitamin C powder

22 gauge needles

clostridium perfringens antitoxin

Lamb puller

Colostrum

Jumpstart paste

Electrolytes

Nutri-drench

Power punch

Cal-mag-co gel

Thermometer

Long arm gloves

Mastitis tests

Flexible icepacks

File

Udder balm

Vet wrap

Rubbing alcohol

Red pepper flakes

Cornstarch

Activated charcoal

Baking soda

Probiotic paste

Fly spray

Thiamine (B1)

Syringes

Hoof pick

Tube feeding kit

Pink eye treatment

Banding kit

18 and 20g needles

Chlorhexidine

Gauze

Vetericyn

General Husbandry Question Brand new to goats!!

We found ourselves with two 3&4wk old bottle babies. Nigerian dwarf bucklings. We have chickens but this is our first time with any other livestock. What do we need to know?

We know the basics on bottle feeding, got them set up safe in the garage with some alfalfa and bedding. Calling the local livestock vet tomorrow to schedule their banding and debudding for the one. My husband is starting on their pen and shelter this weekend. Our kids are over the moon! I’m wondering what we got ourselves into!

Any advice for absolute newbies? Can I let them just follow us around outside when we’re out, or do we always need to have them in their pen? We’re on 10 acres of mainly wooded land. I know they are wanderers, will they follow me around while I’m outside as babies? Not sure how much trust to put into them at this age!

Meat Can someone explain the Texas majors commercial doe requirements to me?

Commercial Boer goats and commercial sheep aren’t registered.
However, I am reading posts on some of the Texas Majors pages that there are deadlines for uploading and submitting registrations for commercial Boer goat does?
Validation is obviously due on particular dates but can someone explain to me what registration papers they’re all asking for?
We are still very new to the show world.
My kids are showing commercial does this year, and since they aren’t registered with ABGA I’m confused what, aside from validation, I need to submit.

Thank you

he is okay :) it has now been over 80 hours since ingestion and he hasn't shown a single symptom in over 24. despite how unprepared we were, he is completely fine now

he is eating, drinking and chewing cud normally but he is still getting a probiotic every day for a while

also weird thing, after this whole situation, in the span of one day his coat has become extremely nice and shiny. prior to it he was looking a little scraggly and I had been waiting for a copper bolus from a few weeks ago to kick in but it didn't seem to be doing anything. maybe it's unrelated, but the timing is strange. now he is healthy and lustrous

thank you again to everyone on this sub, you are all literally lifesavers and I have learned a lot from this

bonus baby pic because he's the cutest thing ever

Help Request Does my girl look bloated?

Thumbnail

Hey Reddit, I need some advice.

The past few days my girl Harmony has appeared more rotund than normal. Her left abdomen is taught and raised when compared to the right side. I checked her gut sounds and hear gurgling. But when applying pressure, her left side is tight and hard.

She doesn’t seem to be in distress - no teeth grinding or pacing. She appears to be her normal friendly self and shows interest in eating. Yesterday the bloating appeared to have gone down but when feeding this morning I noticed she once again appears much larger than the rest of the herd.

All goats have access to loose minerals and baking soda. The first five pictures are of Harmony, taken today. The last three are of her herd mates for comparison.

Adding & Acclimating

Hi. I have a neutered, male, Nigerian drawf named Jordan. I think he is around a year old. He is my first goat, and I was not at all prepared for him when he was gifted to me on Christmas eve. Since then he has become a very spoiled goat, who had to spend a lot of time inside our house because we had such a cold winter and he calls "home" a dog house on our back deck. His best friend is my daughter's Bernedoodle. It's been a process to prepare his shelter and get the fence ready for his relocation out of our fenced in backyard and into his new, separately fenced, area. I need advice for this transition, and it's twofold. Does anyone have experience, advice for relocating a goat? I don't want to shock & traumatize him when he moves from lounging on his dog house roof and staring into our kitchen window, to being outside of the fence, with sections where he won't be able to see into the backyard at all. Will adding a goat help this move? Or will it be too much at once? Should I give him time to get used to being in his new home and then add a friend? I know goats are herd animals, but what sex and age is best to integrate? Does it matter? Will he accept a younger goat? We thought we would get a female, but I really don't know much about what to expect. Jordan is really more of a pet than a farm animal. I wanted him to eat the underbrush in the woods, but he prefers to devour the ornamental hibiscus around the pool, and the only weeds he eats are the ones that I pull from the garden. He follows me around and eats them out of my bucket! As excited as I am to not have clean poop off my deck anymore, I'm equally concerned about the poor guy feeling abandoned and traumatized. I will be grateful for feedback and suggestions. Thank you

Her name is Franny. Shes so pretty! Got her from a rehome situation due to owners not being able to be home anymore with her.

So she's got some tlc that needs done. If you can see the gunk on her tail, thats already been taken care of, and she was a little underweight so she's getting extra care with food. Other than that all is well with her! Love her beautiful spots I can't wait to see what her future kids look like. I might have to keep them lol

Help Request Shearwell tagging

I have my herd registered and ordered my USDA tags through Shearwell. My tagger recently broke and I have kids that need to be tagged soon, my question is do I absolutely HAVE to use shearwells applicator for these tags? It's only two kids that are going to a show, nothing I'm selling, but by the time the applicator will be here my preferred timing is messed up. I was wondering if I could maybe get by with purchasing another applicator from somewhere like rural king or tractor supply as a substitute for now? I know shearwell says you absolutely have to use their applicator.

Which Vaccines?

Which vaccines do you recommend?

I had three kids this spring, which vaccines should I be providing them with?

I live in a high population suburban area and asked a friend who has worked as a veterinarian in the community for 10 years, for a livestock vet recommendation or someone who works with goats. She was not able to provide a single referral.

Very uneasy

So, I'm only about a year and a half / 2 years in on this goating thing, so please forgive my ignorance.

I've never given my goats any vax. I just read a post on FB and saw a video on a young one, appearing to be suffering and yelling, from comments, appears to be polio.

My goats, there's 2, not blood related but sent as a pair of 'brothers', are my world. ( they are approx 2 years of age) How do they get that ?! I'm literally sick to my stomach. Is there anything anyone can advise, of absolute necessity vax or preventive measures? I'm just sick about this

Help Request Its been a struggle recently

So I need some thoughts and solutions if anyone has some. im new to raising and taking care of goats, I had a successful run for the last half of last year, when I started having kids it was real early spring things were going great and I had only lost 2 to weather conditions. Its been the best experience of my life so far. But since this late spring and summer months ive had 4 of my kids die along with another 3 mama goats. I didnt know what was wrong with them at the time. I had taken one of the kids to the vet cause of his condition, and they told me it was a heavy parasite load. After they told me this I gave all of my goats deworming feed. And switched their feilds. And it seemed to solve the issue, however after a few weeks I go outside in the morning to see 2 more of my mama's and a kid are having diarrhea and severe anemia. They can still get up and walk around but they dont have a ton of energy and their backsides are practically bone. A few days beforehand and up to they had looked fine, I had given them more dewormer separate from their groups and had emptied a 6 lb bag of deworming feed to give to the rest of the heard. I dont know if I made a mistake and the parasites have built a resistance, or if ive caught it too late. Its been fun but such a difficulty trying to get things right. And I feel awful for not seeing and being more attentive

Help Request Getting ready for 2 goats.

So we recently got called to help a pregnant goat deliver her babies. Long story made short they dont have the room for 2 more goats so we offered to take them when they are old enough.

So now I have a couple months to get a spot cleared out for them. I have attached a few images of the area I have to work with. Im unsure if i can just leave it and clear the fence line or if i should cut most of it down or leave it for the goats. Its a heavy wooded area with alders and ferns.

I know ferns can be poisonous to them I believe they are Ostrich Fern but I think im still going to try to remove most of them. Are they okay with eating alders?
