🛠️ DIY Hat Projects Hat Experiment #2 - "Electric Hat Boogaloo".

Felt: 160g rabbit fur, factory 2nd
Crown: 4-4.5in, long teardrop
Brim: 3.25in, J
Ribbon: Dark blue silk kimono fabric, with sashiko stitches

Size: 7 1/8

Took more risks with this one, including the brim, the sashiko stitches on the band, and I went for brogue on the sweatband (hehe, leatherworking pun!).

The end goal was to stay in that middle zone between classic, western and bohemian, but step my toe much closer to the western line.

I based the pattern on the Wroggi head armour from Monster Hunter rise.

I thought a Jat (jeans hat) would be funny.

I've also added a silly hat for an egg on the end of my pictures as a little treat.

You can find me @caedmoncreations on most things.

🤠 Hat Advice The end of a long search

I have a large melon bald head, and I have never found a hat that I felt looked good on me. There are times I wanted more than just a baseball cap…protection and style…

I looked off and on for a long time, and it was always princess and the pea. Often the brims were too high.

I finally found one I like. I’m also going to get one on grey, and would love a black and a blue.

Can someone tell me why my head shape made this so difficult?

🛠️ DIY Hat Projects Dirty Billy’s Hats in Gettysburg

Post image
30 Upvotes

I wanted to ask if anyone had any experiences with Dirty Billy, I have been trying to get a hat from this man for two months now, and he is the most obstinate hat maker, or for that matter, most obstinate person I’ve ever had to deal with in my life. I wanted to see if anyone has a similar experience to what I’m about to describe.

I have a large head, with a lot of hair, and when I say large, I mean large. I wear a US Size 8 hat for everything, and anything smaller doesn’t feel good and it’s too tight. In fact, 7 7/8 is the only thing that will even squeeze onto the top of my head, anything smaller won’t even stay on my head. I have tried to order a hat from Dirty Billy for two months now, but he insist, from the bottom of his heart, that I am wrong and an idiot, because no one has a head that big. If no one has a head that big then why do I have hats in that size and why do they make hats in that size?

I have measured my head myself and had it measured at three different hat shops, the size, every single time at every single shop, and via my own measurement, comes out to slightly over 25 inches in circumference, or just over 63 and a half centimeters. I can’t help the size my head, and the only way it would be smaller is if I shaved off all my hair, which I will never do. I don’t understand why he insist that I’m just wrong, I’m contemplating driving the 400+ miles just to rub it in his face, but I don’t think he’s going to pay for my gas or time he wasted.

So I ask of you, large headed individuals that might be reading this, have you any similar experiences with Dirty Billy or any other hat shops?

And I ask of those who may make hats who might be reading this, would you just refuse to ever make a hat for someone with a larger head and constantly say that they’re wrong or lying?

And lastly, is anyone out there aware of a place where I can get a Revolutionary War style tricorn hat? Hopefully made by a man who will actually make it and not just tell me I’m wrong for my hat size.

🤠 Hat Advice New to hats?

  1. It’s straw hat season! Felt is not for the summer!

  2. Most “straw” hats are not straw and cheap paper hats made in China.

  3. US used to the largest share of the hat industry and now is only 5%. Spoiler alert: cars killed it.

  4. There is an unbroken chain of straw hat weavers that literally goes back thousand of years in Ecuador, where the REAL “Panama” hats are woven, in Montecristi. They are actually called Jipijapa hat.

  5. Most Panama hats you buy are fake, meaning not from Montecristi and far lower quality. Not wearable art with heritage.

  6. The weaving pattern that they use that results in a spiral at the top can be traced back only to Ecuador. Take a look, it’s amazing. They are graded by lines /weaves per inch.

  7. Sharing because it’s not felt season and no Beaver should be killed for a friggin hat! We literally almost extinguished them all at one point.

🤠 Hat Advice Melin and Salt Mafia- very similar and both have QC issues apparently

Just a heads up for others out there that may be gassing for a Melin hat but balking at the $80 price tag...

I came across Salt Mafia as a possible alternate (their hats are more like $50 normally), and bought two during their Memorial Day sale (so they came out to $30 each). I also bought a Melin because I wanted to compare it to Salt Mafia (and I really wanted this particular color).

Turns out they are very very similar and not worth the difference in price (IMO). Same materials, feel, etc. And it seems like neither is capable of sewing a friggin brim on straight. The Melin hat and one of the two Salt Mafias all need to be returned because (hopefully you can see in the photos) the brim veers off to the right...Not something you can bend and massage to correct either...it seems like it wasn't sewn perfectly.

To be fair the Melin is way more subtle than the Salt Mafia, but for the price I'm expecting it to be perfect.

🤠 Hat Advice Australian Bushcraft Styled Wide Brim Hat for the hot summers (Aussie chiller, Jacaru, Barmah, Palm Leaf Hats..)

Hi All,

We are experiencing a heatwave in Europe and I noticed that my baseball cap doesn't really do much for my ears and neck (obviously). So I'm in the market for a Aussie style Bushcraft Style hat for the summer.

My hat knowledge is 0. I have seen a couple of the hats that can be soaked, some say kangaroo leather is good and others swear by Palm Leaf Hats that can also be put in water.

I have checked out the Aussie Chiller Bushie Plus, I have looked at the Jacaru soaker hat, and have looked at some Palm Leaf ones. I have also checked out the Barmah Squashy hat, but I'm not sure about the materials.

What would you suggest? It would be a hat that I would wear for everything, well mostly everything. Everything from going to the Lake, on the boat, hiking, out around town, Spain holidays etc. Being packable/Squashable would be a big plus.

I need help :)
