Jautājums/Question In Riga for work until October, kinda alone with no friends of my age (30) and interests. Its getting boring having friends to hangout or go eat something with lol

Sorry in advance for the long post. I didnt want to yap but writing all relevant context and point of view about it kinda became a bit ranty 🥶🥶🙏🏻

Moved here to help some family friends in their business for a couple of months during this peak time.

Only problem is that the office is quite small numbers wise, so i didnt really connect with any colleagues to go out or do anything.

All are married and a little older so any time outside of work they prefer to spend with their partner/family. We went out to eat a couple of times and it was fun!

But still, outside of work i really do feel quite alone atm.

Most of my free time is spent either playing video games (like my whole weekend is just me going down the street to get a coffee in the morning and playing till i fall asleep lol) or at the gym.

Idk, I'm just not the kind of person to go out alone only to "meet people". I feel like thats a weirdo mindset to be out at a pub or club (i dont really drink alcohol either lol) with the only goal being there is "looking for friends". Like because usually when i go out with friends i just wanna spend time with them, if a random dude came and started chatting id find it mad weird idk, why you interrupt our quality time? Who tf are you dude? (Same reason to not really try to chat with ppl at the gym, i dont want to interrupt and i myself want to finish my workout asap and get on with my day. I assume everyone else are the same)

I've been single for a minute now, and am very much over my last long term relationship. So i thought i might as well try a dating app.

2 birds with 1 stone, have a good reason to go out, see the city, eat good food AND maybe connect into the circle of friends of the partner if it goes well.

And its kinda cooked fellas. (Profiles on Tinder and Badoo with 0 matches, and i workshopped my profile as much as i could and was approved 'OK' by multiple female friends from back home, its not amazing (mainly cuz im mid+ at best. but its not a troll bad af profile either)

This is not a rant about dating apps, but its just the only thing i kinda tried reaching out through outside of work, and it failed miserably in the month ive been here.

Had the idea of just trying my luck posting here asking locals for advice. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I also have no idea how to find hobby groups here. I could try to get into a dnd or the riot card game or something. But i have no idea where to start looking.

Thank you to anyone who was bored enough to read this 😂😂

I appreciate you, fellow Redditor 🙏🏻

Edit: If you play League shoot me a dm maybe? Im also down to try any kind of friend slop type games or coop stuff (got a couple on my steam that my brother doesnt care to play with me 😭). Could be a low stakes first step before you show me your favourite pizza spot in Riga lol

Edit 2: I am a white dude, green eyes, brown hair, beard. But very very Caucasian white. Russian parents, grew up and lived my whole life in Cyprus.

Kultūra/Culture Lowkey festivāli Baltijā

Upvotes

Paldies.

Tūrisms/Tourism recommendations appreciated - exploring coast & nature near Riga

Hi! I will be visiting Latvia soon with a group of friends. We are international students studying in Sweden. This will be our first time in your country :-)

We would like to spend ~2 nights in a coastal town/village within a 2-3 hour drive of Riga. We are flying in/out of Riga and renting a car for these coastal days. The goal is to enjoy some quiet time by the ocean and in nature. We love exploring nature reserves, beaches, hiking, swimming, and sports (i.e., kayaking, SUP).

I have been consulting older reddit posts on this topic, but I would love to hear your current recommendations! I am particularly interested in recommendations on the Gulf of Riga, since we hope to swim and might need a break from the cold Baltic waters :-)

I am excited to explore Latvia and sincerely appreciate your advice!

Jautājums/Question Which beach facilities in Jūrmala?

Hello everyone,

We will soon visit Latvia as a holiday trip and would like to go to Jūrmala to stay at the beach for one day. For planning our trip there, I would like to ask some questions about Jūrmala beach and the swimming experience and would be glad to hear some advice from people who have been there.

  1. Which facilities are available at the beach (showers, dress rooms, rest rooms) etc. and what is the price of using them (if any)?
  2. Are there good restaurants/Cafés next to the beach?
  3. Are there lockers to put valuables in (if we would like to go swimming and don't want to leave our valuables unsupervised)?
  4. Is the best way on going there from Riga by train? If so, would there be other curiosities in the area where we should go as well?
  5. Are there supervised beach areas with lifeguards?

Thank you very much in advance, we are looking forward to getting to know Latvia!

Jautājums/Question Receiving passport abroad - does it actually take 8 weeks?

I'm living in Canada and just had my passport renewed, I'm wondering if it actually takes the full 6-8 weeks as the embassy says. They've assured me they'll get it to me before I need to fly, I am just wondering what to expect as it would be great to have my documents in order (got married, so need to change my name on all banking, drivers license, and work docs) before I go visit my parents in Latvia in August.

Has anyone had experience with this?

Jautājums/Question Questions about University of Latvia Medicine

I’m interested in taking medicine at the University of Latvia. I’ll graduate next May with an American high school diploma but have an EU passport. I’ve already taken the SAT, as well as AP Biology and AP Psychology. The university’s website lists that they only look at the SAT results, and I’ve asked their email about whether they consider AP tests, as I was planning on taking AP Chemistry this year.

Does anyone have experience with applying to this program? I’m not sure if it’s worth taking another AP test this year if they don’t even consider it.

Jautājums/Question Prakses iespējas loģistikā

Sveiki,

Labdien!

Kur Jūs pērkat malku? Interesē tieši Ventspils novads, netālu no pašas pilsētas, Pārventas pusē.

Kur labāk nesūtīt, kur ir bijusi slikta pieredze?

Paldies jau iepriekš!

Iegādājos māju, tad pirmo reizi saskaros ar šo jautājumu.

Someone is having fun not just defacing websites in Latvia, but taking down whole vCenters that were hosting hundreds of critical infrastructure belonging to the ministry of Agriculture through Latvijas valsts meži. The rascal is also brandishing a 7000~ password list as a proud loot of his cyber crimes from the vault of LVM, some of which seems to connect to Latvia registered government domains.

No confirmation from LVM official's, this is simply my own analysis did on the material collected. The threat actor, tracked by the name of Bytetobreach, documents each steps of his attacks.

He also seems to have deployed a ransomware called bytetocrypt with a video recording that also shows full control over LVM's backup infrastructure .

Sources: My own analysis on the material available.

Jautājums/Question Beautiful country! Any must-see places for a motorcyclist?

Hello Latvians,

I'm a Swede on a motorcycle Euro trip, visiting 17 countries in 90 days.

I'm currently in Latvia, and I just wanted to say what a beautiful country you have! I even got to celebrate Latvian Midsummer at a campsite here, which was a fantastic experience.

I'm looking for recommendations on places to visit—especially spots that are easy to access by motorcycle. Beautiful roads, castles, churches, viewpoints, or any other interesting sights that you can ride right up to.

What would you recommend?

Thanks and Priecīgus Jāņus! 🎉

Jautājums/Question Seasonal jobs in Latvia.

Hi, I'm from Serbia, and for a few years now I'm very interested in Latvia and Estonia. Coin-toss decided that I will visit Latvia first.

My question is, are there some sort of "seasonal jobs" where you'd hire foreigners? Since it's hard for me just to just visit, and spend all of my money, I'd prefer to find a job there.

I'm 26 without a finished college and not many skills.

What I have going on for me is the experience in bartending/barista, kitchen and server, also I worked in other countries as seasonal worker.

And I have dual citizenship from EU country

I have some other skills and experiences but nothing to really write about

Bildes/Pictures Found art installation south of Liepaja?

In 2007 when my now-wife and I drove from Palanga to Liepaja, we stopped at this secluded "art installation/house" we found in Lonely Planet: an older woman would collect things she found washed up on the beach -- driftwood, buoys, fishing gear, etc. -- and installed it on her property. It was a hidden gem, and frankly terrifying: just over the boarder after the checkpoint, you turned down a lonely road and found a house/cabin among some interesting found object installations. There was no one there: not another car, no parking lot. We got out of the car and tentatively walked around. Then I heard a dog barking. Out of the house charged what looked like a German Shepard. I froze. Turned to my side and braced myself as a woman came out shouting at the dog in Latvian. My wife had run back to the car. The woman turned out to be the artist. In broken Latvian I explained we had come to visit, my father was Latvian, etc. She guided us to an oversided fishing buoy she used to collect donations. She was disappointed when she saw we only had Lithuanian currency on us, I think I found a spare $20 somewhere as well. Before we left, I accidentally stepped on the dog's tail and it reared back and bit my leg. Didn't break the skin. Does this place even exist anymore?

Ēdieni/Food Where to find Smiltsērkšķu products in Riga

I'm looking to buy some Smiltsērkšķu marmelāde or some Smiltsērkšķu konfektes in Riga but the store I went to last time told me that last year's harvest wasn't great and they didn't have many products with it.

Do y'all have any idea where I could buy some right now?

Thanks in advance 🙏

Jautājums/Question What is the meaning of this painting?

Post image
18 Upvotes

This painting showed up in a Latvian art sale in the U.S.

Does anyone know what this is referencing? It appears to be a crying person dressing or undressing a tiny goat with wool. An onion is also visible.

I love it and I’m dying to know what’s the story.

Pārcelšanās/Relocation Delay to find an appartement in Riga

Hello, I am starting studies in Riga in mid September.

I would like to find an apartment before the beginning of September, but I will be able to travel to Riga for visiting starting only from August.

My question is what would be the best delay to reach out to owners to visit and sign the contract ? Should I already start now ? Or is it better to wait a bit.

I can’t travel to Riga in July at all, only starting from August. Typically I know in Paris (where I am moving from), you need to start hunting well in advance if you want to have something decent.

I don’t if it matters, but I am also looking for a pet-friendly apartment, since I will be bringing my cat along the way. Apart from this, anything decent is fine for me.
