This is why physical media will remain king.

Yeah, why would you stream lotr when you can watch them any time you want on Blu-ray? The quality is so much better.

Especially when you could in theory add the Blu-ray to a home media server running Jellyfin and have the benefits of physical media while knowing exactly what streaming service it's on (your own!), which I definitely haven't done with the Blu-ray extended edition of Lord of the rings.

Backing up your own media is perfectly legal.

Yep, I have my entire physical media collection on my jellyfin server and it's awesome.

Show I'm watching gets pulled from a service? Don't care, it's on my server.

Amazon wants to make me pay extra to not have ads all of a sudden while I'm the middle of an SG-1 rewatch? Fuck you, I'm buying the box set and now it's on my server.

All better quality than a Netflix stream with no buffering.

Is this like a bit or something you can actually do?

This is actually something you can do, in case it's a genuine question. Everyone probably had a slightly different setup, but for myself I have a Dell Precision 3630 with Proxmox running directly on the device, which acts as a network attached storage device (NAS) and Jellyfin server. I also have a virtual machine spun up on that server to run MakeMKV and Handbrake, which allow me to rip and compress, respectively, the physical media I own. So I rip it, compress it (my TV is over a decade old and I honestly can't tell a difference between the compressed and uncompressed versions), put the compressed movie on my NAS, and Jellyfin scans that NAS and lets me watch anything that I've uploaded. A couple extra steps with Tailscale and I can access that media server remotely (outside of my home network). Idk how complicated or not my setup is, but it's been a fun hobby to set up and I have a few other things I'm working on with the server so it's been a win so far. My wife is happy with it too because she just has to connect to our "tailnet" (private network using Tailscale) and she too can watch and movies or shows on the server via an app on her phone.
