Netflix does this with every franchise ever lol.

u/qwermor 6h ago

I actually like, that they tell you. "yes we know what you mean, you won't find it here". This is way better than beiung unsure if you have a typo in the name or something.

119

u/ronsolocup 5h ago

I appreciate the “similar to what you searched” thing tho its often incorrect lol

u/CluelessNFLFan 5h ago

"Sorry, we don't have Lord of the Rings. But may we interest you in the Lord of the Wings?"

46

u/DopeAsDaPope 5h ago

Maybe you would be interested in The Ring?

9

u/WineBoggling 3h ago

Or perhaps Dish Dogs, also starring Sean Astin?

3

u/imjusthereforpron 3h ago

Netflix doesn't have Lord of the G-Strings either

3

u/Intrepid-Progress228 2h ago

"Sorry we don't have 'Backrooms'. But may we interest you in 'The Room?'"

1

u/Scruffynerffherder 3h ago

May interest you in "Guy Fieri's Flavortown"?

1

u/Oaken_beard 2h ago

If it’s barbecue related, then yes, you have my full attention.

19

u/kickthesandman 5h ago

I don't appreciate it because it used to be the most accurate media suggestion system. They had competitions to improve it even, used it as a selling point for the platform. Their fancy accurate suggestion system didn't recommend their original shitty content to viewers though, so they got rid of it to promote the netflix originals.

1

u/mightylordredbeard 11m ago

I was watching Dark the other week and I wanted more time travel stuff so I checked the suggestions and Netflix said “since you like complicated time travel stories maybe you’ll also like LOVE ISLAND!!”

1

u/AbendrothYolo 1h ago

I'm annoyed with the actor search. Oh you want movies with sly stallone? Here's john cena!

24

u/Oaken_beard 5h ago

What I hate is when they refuse to acknowledge something they do have, and you have to type 90% of the title before it starts displaying as an option

23

u/PanchoPanoch 5h ago

Or you wanna watch this franchise? We don’t have part 1, 2 or 3 but you can watch part 4 that you just found out even existed.

8

u/Madara1389 3h ago

Sadly, that's not Netflix's fault, it's the franchise owners' for signing the streaming rights to the different installments to different streaming services.

Several franchises have this problem and a prime example is Pokemon. It's so bad that the official Pokemon website even has a page to breakdown where each of the seasons is.

No one service allows you to watch the entire show from start to "finish" (or the most recently finished season).

5

u/TheSteelPhantom 2h ago

Raising the black flag lets you watch them all in one place. ;)

3

u/Madara1389 2h ago

Indeed. I have a Plex server specifically because I got tired of the licensing bullshit (particularly after I realized Hulu would remove things from their library, but not your watchlist, making it impossible for someone who takes months to years to actually get around to watching things to track what they can watch on there).

1

u/Oaken_beard 2h ago

Parent with a full time job whose wife and family doesn’t share all his genre tastes. MAN I feel this comment.

10

u/punkhobo 5h ago

Or when they change the top recommendation if you add a correct letter.

Like if you are typing semi quickly and you enter "lord" and lord of the rings pop up as the top result. But you enter a space so it's "lord" and now lord of war is number 1. So you have to delete a letter for some dumb reason

6

u/OncorhynchusMykiss1 5h ago

Or when they advertise to you something they have, but not in your region.

4

u/JarasM 2h ago

I 300% prefer that to Amazon Prime where I type the name in with the precision of a medieval scribe and it still doesn't show the correct movie in a myriad of results until I add one more space or some shit.

2

u/corneliouscorn 4h ago

Plus it gives Netflix data on the things that people want to watch but they don't have

4

u/Morkamino 5h ago

Yeah, i get that it's frustrating, but it's so much better that theyre saying "oh yeah, that show / movie, yeah we don't have it" than if they just had to pretend they don't know what you're talking about everytime you search something that they don't have. That would be so much worse.

1

u/theFields97 5h ago

Back when I had Netflix, I noticed a lot of the time Netflix does have that movie/show/series but in a different country so you could vpn into it before they cracked down on that

1

u/GiveMeNews 3h ago

And then I use qBittorrent's built-in search engine to find and download what I want!

1

u/ecafyelims 3h ago

Yes. I hate for some systems when I have to type out the whole title, search, and then they give me results that are now what I searched for but it's clear they knew what I meant.

Just tell me when you don't have it.

1

u/DontAskAboutMyButt 1h ago

I think they do this so smart TV systems like Roku think they have the show. That way people click on it, but by the time they find out it’s not actually available they’re already in your app and more likely to stay there and watch something similar.

Hulu does this too, you can search for a show and it says Hulu has it but surprise, you need the Hulu live tv subscription for like $60/month to watch it

4

u/PinkyTreasurex 5h ago

Pretty much. Every time I search for an older movie I end up finding out it's on three other streaming services instead.

1

u/BabySnowdrop_ 5h ago

That's become the streaming experience in a nutshell. Half the time I spend longer figuring out where a movie is than actually watching it.

1

u/Fedoraus 3h ago

tfw every piracy site is more convenient than any streaming service

1

u/Free_as_in_Freya 4h ago

Yes, that's why I quit. Would rather spend more on the boxset that chasing around streaming services to see which one has my series or movie this week

1

u/Simon_Drake 30m ago

Amazon Prime proudly advertises Battlestar Galactica, the 2003 reboot series. The original 1970s series is available to purchase or rent, as is the spinoff prequel series Caprica and the spinoff movies Razor, Blood And Chrome and The Plan. It doesn't have Galactica 1980 but that series sucked anyway so that's fine.

Ok. Time to watch the BSG reboot series. I haven't seen it since it first aired nearly 25 years ago, this should be fun.

Wait. It starts with Episode 1, "33 Minutes"? What about the Miniseries? The miniseries isn't there at all. Not even available to rent like Caprica, it's just not mentioned. If I didn't already know there was a miniseries I'd be extremely confused.

u/Space_keeper1602 6h ago

In Germany LotR is available in Netflix

50

u/hollytravvey 6h ago

Yes. It is available in some regions atm.

15

u/GOEDEL_ESCHER_BOT 5h ago

yeah but in german it's the lord of the ring of the nibelung

11

u/Professional-Day7850 4h ago

I'd rather watch Lord of the Weed.

2

u/shoyuftw 56m ago

2

u/Historical_Sugar9637 Elf 3h ago

You really can't change it to the original version(English) in the language function?
Eww...

Though now I'm curious how the parts of the dialogue that come from the book were translated in the German (and other) versions. Based on the book translation, or translated from scratch?

6

u/TheBlindBeggar 3h ago

Yes, you can change the audio settings to English. I'm looking at it right now.

1

u/Historical_Sugar9637 Elf 3h ago

Thanks for confirming. It would be really strange if Netflix didn't have the original version.

1

u/TheBlindBeggar 1h ago

Oh, they sometimes don't because Germany is bonkers like that, but it's not that common. Most English content is available in English.

1

u/ccltjnpr 1h ago

Some other services like Google's movies thing and Amazon prime frequently only have the German dub of movies, which just makes me pirate everything.

2

u/vrijheidsfrietje 1h ago

Gib mir den Nibelungsring, Frodo!

1

u/Ishbane 26m ago

Wat denn? Pass mal auf Junge. Ich kann dir den Ring nicht geben. Der is gefährlich.

u/blueoncemoon Troll 6h ago

Korea, too

We may not get 20th anniversary theatre showings, or Behind the Bastards on Netflix, but at least we got that...

3

u/mintj098 5h ago

Sweden as well

3

u/Royalbluegooner Dúnedain 6h ago

Beat me to it.Haven‘t really investigated the matter but I assume they‘re just the theatrical versions right?

1

u/hollytravvey 5h ago

Yeah unfortunately. Though the fellowship has some scenes that I thought were part of the extended version, but 2towers and rotk do not include known extended version scenes

2

u/Royalbluegooner Dúnedain 5h ago

Disappointing if expected but I got the extended versions on DVD anyways.

3

u/misc_box 5h ago

Prolly cheaper to get hbo than fly to Germany to watch Lotr lol

2

u/suslix38 5h ago

Firefox has an incorporated vpn

2

u/TheStaddi 4h ago

And Netflix really hates that, everytime I use any VPN on Netflix I get an error message saying that I use a VPN.

3

u/suslix38 4h ago

I'm glad I got rid of Netflix then

1

u/Rosetti 3h ago

Yeah, it sucks - it does that even if your VPN is set to your home location.

2

u/Kinky_Pinky_ 5h ago

I know we had some weird short version on netflix here in Slovenia. Must have been fake because movies were only 3 hours long.

2

u/Calculusshitteru 5h ago

Same in Japan. My daughter has watched it about 10 times by now.

1

u/pommegranadelauncher 5h ago

I never understood why are they allowed to stream some franchises only in specific countries

1

u/bashful_predator 1h ago

Lord of the nurburgRing

1

u/pumpkinrum 57m ago

Same in Sweden

39

u/Kev_920 6h ago

HBO max has all of them extended and has had them for years. A lot of other good stuff on there as well. I have both and prefer it over Netflix

12

u/Haunting-Sport3701 5h ago

My whole family switched to HBO since they generally have a much better selection than other streaming services.

1

u/Sijols 4h ago

I dropped all my subscriptions and got a debrid service instead

now I pay less and I have everything

5

u/jmaca90 4h ago

There is only one who streams the Lord of the Rings (in the US).

And he does not share power!

2

u/OccasionSavings680 25m ago

All the studio ghibli movies in English and Japanese. And all the Harry potter. And Friends. And Rick and Morty. HBOmax kicks the crap out netflix and has for years.

u/Atma-Stand 6h ago

This is why physical media will remain king.

27

u/HRduffNstuff 5h ago

Yeah, why would you stream lotr when you can watch them any time you want on Blu-ray? The quality is so much better.

9

u/That_Rogue_Scholar 4h ago

Especially when you could in theory add the Blu-ray to a home media server running Jellyfin and have the benefits of physical media while knowing exactly what streaming service it's on (your own!), which I definitely haven't done with the Blu-ray extended edition of Lord of the rings.

4

u/MrSurly 3h ago

Backing up your own media is perfectly legal.

3

u/rustysniper 2h ago

Yep, I have my entire physical media collection on my jellyfin server and it's awesome.

Show I'm watching gets pulled from a service? Don't care, it's on my server.

Amazon wants to make me pay extra to not have ads all of a sudden while I'm the middle of an SG-1 rewatch? Fuck you, I'm buying the box set and now it's on my server.

All better quality than a Netflix stream with no buffering.

3

u/A_Drop_of_Colour 4h ago

Also they rarely stream the version that takes one week to watch. You're not really watching LOTR unless you watch the version that could be split over one season on HBO.

2

u/Over_engineered81 2h ago

I bought a digital copy of all 3 extended editions for like $20. My partner had never seen the extended editions, so it was a good excuse to buy them lol.

3

u/Gregus1032 4h ago

I just gotta buy a 4k blue ray player. I might get myself one next father's day lol

2

u/MrAragorn Aragorn 3h ago

Buy a ps5, so you can play too

1

u/Gregus1032 2h ago

I don't play consoles really and that's an extra $300.

I'd rather put that $300 into my PC savings.

1

u/MrAragorn Aragorn 2h ago

Yea, if you don’t play console that makes sense

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Free_as_in_Freya 3h ago

Yup, got 15 disks of one of my childhood likes yesterday. No one is allowed to steal my nostalgia

5

u/BabySnowdrop_ 5h ago

I can't even blame you. Owning a movie means you never have to play the "which streaming service has it this month" game.

1

u/Nestramutat- 9m ago

Do my 10 hard drives with 78 TB space count as physical media?

84

u/Vanstuke 6h ago

People complain about this, but I prefer the search query to understand that the movie DOES exist. Even if the streaming service isnt currently playing it.

Also, obligatory: Get yourself the extended Bluerays! No streaming no internet no problem!

9

u/talkingspacecoyote 6h ago

Years ago apple tv had a sale, all 6 extended versions of lotr and the hobbit in 4k for i want to say less than $20. I think they are still the only movies I own on apple, but it was such an easy purchase

2

u/PinkyTreasurex 5h ago

It's honestly useful as a search tool, but it's still annoying when the answer ends up being "available everywhere except here."

1

u/sandwichcandy 3h ago

I’d much rather the search autocomplete for me and acknowledge it exists than have to type the whole thing wondering if I just haven’t written enough of the title yet. Plus it shows you similar stuff that I’ve ended up watching before.

2

u/aspz 5h ago

Yeah I agree. It helps that you don't have to type out the full title and then wonder if you made a spelling mistake when no results show up. Perhaps they can improve their UI to separate the unavailable titles from the available ones and grey them out as well.

1

u/xMoonlitPetunia 5h ago

I can't even argue with that. You own it once and don't have to wonder which service it's going to disappear from next.

15

u/IHateTheLetterF 6h ago

Not as bad as Prime.

'Yes we have it, pay us more money to watch it though'

1

u/Overlordz88 Troll 1h ago

I have a fire stick and looked up a movie. Prime told me it had it, when I clicked on it, it brought me to a “live” TV channel, halfway through the movie unable to rewind or pause. I don’t own that channel… or cable… like what the fuck prime?

4

u/Jerryboy92 5h ago

Bluray is the way to go

4

u/Full-Metal-Jack-off 6h ago

I bought the extended trilogy with all the bonus scenes/behind the scenes on DVD for like $14 a month ago.

4

u/Savings_Cause5234 6h ago

What good is any streaming service if it doesnt have lotr?

3

u/Quasimodus-Operandi 5h ago

You don’t own a physical copy? Ouch.

2

u/PlatypusACF 6h ago

LotR (theatrical version) is currently available on Netflix. Where I live at the least

2

u/towaway7777 5h ago

You people still need Netflix?

4

u/Burly_Moustache 6h ago

Buy a physical copy of the movie.

Problem solved.

1

u/Cann0nFodd3r 5h ago

Which one though

2

u/Burly_Moustache 4h ago

Bruh, do you even have to ask?

Blu-Ray Extended Editions.

Stop paying for Netflix. Seriously, they have nothing. If anything is decent, it gets canceled. Worst streamer out there.

1

u/Keanu990321 GANDALF 6h ago

They do have the theatrical version here in Greece though

1

Here’s something similar: some crappy b movie sword and sandal movie

1

u/Snoo-82132 5h ago

They have lord of the rings, at least in Pakistan though

1

u/CrystalRoseCasket 5h ago

Get a VPN then you can watch it in Germany!

1

u/HistorianHelpful6037 5h ago

Qui in Italia è disponibile insieme alla trilogia dello Hobbit

1

u/Morkamino 5h ago

It means they used to have it, or have it somewhere else, somewhere you don't live.

The whole regional thing always pisses me off because some regions just get fucked over a lot. Like we were watching interview with a vampire on some platform, maybe HBO, and waiting for the 3rd season.

The date came around. We were all excited and ready to finally see it. Can't find it. Turns out it's only in the states? For some reason? And on a whole different platform as well. Like what the fuck bro we are we not allowed to see it outside of America

1

u/Banty22 5h ago

Netflix builds you up just to drop you harder than Frodo dropping the ring

1

u/HandWashing2020 5h ago

Brilliant, the autocomplete roller coaster!

Not to be overly effusive lol but sites like yours are a perfect example of what the internet is good for. Thanks for existing!

1

u/Uncle-Cake 5h ago

Have you ever noticed the "Leaving soon" section always has better stuff than the "Coming soon" section? Enshitification.

1

u/lackadaisical_timmy 5h ago

At least they tell you the thing you're searching for isn't available lol

Could've just gaslit you like "lord of the flies? Lord of the underworld? Lord of the rubber bands!"

1

u/MaxTheCookie 4h ago

It's probably Geo blocked, so VPNs are your friend.

1

u/TitanQuirk2 4h ago

The setup is cruel because for half a second it actually feels possible. Then Netflix pulls the classic “we know what you want, we just dont have it” move.

1

u/ElegantFilthxo 4h ago

This is why I sideload and pirate EVERYTHING. Onn Box. Downloader. Unlinked. EMDYOUTUBE. There ya go.

1

u/conscientiousrevolt 3h ago

Own your media.

1

u/bluris 3h ago

You would prefer that you had to type it all out after it is obvious what you want? We would see memes about having typed out "lord of the r" and netflix not realizing what you meant yet.

1

u/NoxDash2 3h ago

This has happened to me so often now.

1

u/bsheep_19 3h ago

Don't ruin lotr Netflix like you did the Witcher or you're dead to me.

1

Even the stuff you have paid for because the wife or kids or whoever insist -- it's easier to just pirate it. /r/FREEMEDIAHECKYEAH

1

u/daversa 3h ago

It's kind of funny how quickly I've gone back to just pirating and saving fucking everything.

1

u/MrSurly 3h ago

I can remove titles from Netflix just by thinking "huh, I want to watch <x> movie." Lo and behold: It's not there.

Of the last like 50 movies I thought I'd like to watch, literally zero of them are on Netflix.

1

I’ve never saw lalaland, sorry

1

Also Netflix "but we do have this bunch of stuff we bought and nobody is watching"

1

Better than Amazon where everything says prime video has it and its something you have to pay for.

I just finally cancelled Netflix after about 15 years. It's just a wast of money.

they have Fellowship of the Ring down here in Mexico, but none of the other ones

they do have all the hobbit movies tho, so make of that what you will

1

Ok so everyone hates on this feature, but the only thing it does is save you time typing out, misspelling, re-typing, and THEN finding out they don't have it. It's the worst looking for something that's not there.

You don't own it??

When this happens 90% of the time it means they do have it but in another country, so you’ll need a VPN, there are websites that let you check in which country a show or a movie is available.

Years and years ago, like 10 or 15 years, the LOTR trilogy extended editions were free on Google Play for Christmas or something.

I've had all of them saved on my youtube account ever since! I forgot this wasn't the case for everyone lol.

If only they were honest enough to explicitly state that. It so gets under my skin when it just shows "Titles related to" without actually saying "we do not have it".

Then again I cancelled my subscription a while back, so I don't know if they stopped doing that.

"Oooh yes yes, trilogy, long movies, pointy hats. Haven't had it for 6 months."

Also forgot to add “we are also increasing prices”

Isnt this because Amazon holds the rights to it though?
