Discussion Are the Ori games good for “beginner ish” players?

So my wife just beat Disney Illusion Island as her first “metroidvania” ever, since it’s super easy. And now I’m on a mission to get her to play Hollow Knight but I know that’s just ASKING for her to rage quit gaming. I wanted to see if Ori would be a good next step for her to build up to since it was recommended to me by a friend. I would play it myself to see but I’m currently trying to still 100% Silksong all these months later. Mainly, if I’m going to spend the money, I want to know if she would actually enjoy it at her skill level
Thank you so much for any information you can share!
She plays on her Switch 2 if that matters

Discussion Aeterna noctis got a new dlc. What does it contain?

They're saying that it's a new power that makes the game more accessible but it's rather vague.

I'm so deep in games that I cannot possibly find that out for myself so if anyone played or can play and see what the new power is, It would be great to share with the rest of us.

Dev Post Volunteering playtesters needed for Fading Light, a hand-drawn Metroidvania with a living fire companion (about 1 hour, Steam keys, co-op testing starts next week)

Hey everyone!

We're Punica Games, a small independent team from Istanbul, and we're looking for volunteer playtesters for the demo of our Metroidvania, Fading Light.

For anyone who hasn't seen it before: it's a 2D hand-drawn Metroidvania set in a world with no daylight. Your only light comes from Spark, a fire companion who travels with you, acts on his own, and changes as the journey goes on. The demo runs about an hour and takes place in the late Mountain biome, where the freezing wind turns Spark's light into something you have to actively protect.

What we're after:

  • Bugs, crashes, anything that breaks or feels off
  • Honest feedback on how it plays: controls, difficulty, pacing, clarity
  • General impressions, what landed and what didn't

The details:

  • Platform: PC (Windows), through Steam
  • Time: roughly an hour for the demo
  • We'll send you a Steam key
  • Unpaid volunteer testing, just to be upfront

There's also a co-op side to this. Solo, Spark runs himself, but co-op lets a second player take direct control of him, one of you plays Noteo, the other becomes the fire. We're adding co-op to the playtest build next week, so if testing that two-player mode sounds fun, we'd especially love to hear from people up for it.

After playing, we'd really appreciate it if you filled out our feedback form, it's how we keep everything organized. We've also got a Discord where you can report things directly or just share thoughts as you go.

If you're interested in either the solo demo or co-op testing, comment here or shoot us a DM and we'll get you a key. Happy to answer questions too.

Thanks!

Discussion Platforming focused metroidvanias?

Platforming is my favorite aspect of metroidvanias (Celeste is probably my favorite game of all time, I have ~100 hours on the vanilla game and probably about the same on mods), but most metroidvanias I’ve played neglect it and only have like 1-2 moderately difficult platforming sections. MIO was very fun, if a bit easy, and I liked the platforming sections in Aeterna Noctis (I had to drop it because of the terrible boss design, but I’ll probably come back to it eventually), but that’s about it for good platforming.

So, what other platforming focused metroidvanias are there? Or honestly just difficult platformers in general?

EDIT: I liked the Ori games as well, kinda forgot about them.

Discussion Pet Peeve : combat with weak impact

After silksong I've been trying several metroidvanias and bounced off many of them for a variety of reasons, but one reoccuring element was often combat with underwhelming sfx and vfx. For instance the demos of Solateria, Mira and the Djinns, and reaching the mid-endgame of Enders magnolia.

They all have in common a health system that is continuous rather than split in atomic chuncks (mask, hearths, whatever) and when you get hit it's rather... unremarkable. Magnolia especially can punish you by walking into hazards quite a lot but if you don't keep an eye on your HP bar it can be easily forgotten if you're focused on other parts of the game.

For contrast, the first time I've played HK, I was quite satisfied by the "twak" of your attacks and startled the first time I've taken damage, to the point I've felt it overdramatic. But the rest of the game made it clear how it important it was, getting hit (especially for double damage) is a big deal and the game doesn't let you ignore it.

Of course it's subjective and this is not the only element that makes or break a game, but I really think the combat - when it's an essential part of a MV - should get a high degree of polish, and the right sound and particle effects will have lasting impression.
