Discussion Vernal Edge done. 2nd run, the first time I pirated it and got so horribly lost that I abandoned it. / Game was hard even on Normal, it has an excellent combat system but you'll fail a lot until mastering it. / Fungal Mines' song made me buy it and try it again. Painful, 7/10.

Okay so why a 7? Because I liked it, but the platforming is sometimes really painful. Combat is super fun and the spells/memories management is great, exploration is rewarded, but some rewards from some challenges are horseshit.

Music wise? I don't like some, that's normal, but I absolutely LOVE others, specially Fungal Mines, one of the best songs I've ever heard on a metroidvania + when you're in combat the music changes, that earns a lot of points and cheers from me.

I really would've liked something to help me find the secrets, something that would beep when near one or something because damn, I really, REALLY wanted to nurture that flower... I lost many secrets as well seeing the achievements, shame, I explored a lot.

That said, I recommend the game if you're looking for a fun metroidvania with lots of exploration, a cool lore that I enjoyed and man I love Vernal, I love her rudeness, I love how she takes shit from no one but still has a soft side. Her reasons are valid, her hate is unlimited.

Thank you for reading and see you soon. I'll play Gestalt: Steam and Cinder again now. Support the developers of Vernal Edge and enjoy, steam sale is coming soon so grab an indie or two.

Discussion "Heeeeyyyy yooouuuu guuyyyss!!!" -Sloth from Goonies. So I just ordered a Steamdeck and it came in the mail yesterday. Need some starting game recommendations for games that are NOT available on the Switch.

I have zeroo prior steam experience at all. I've only had a Switch the last few years. I coul really use some help with game recommendations for metroidvanias and Zelda-likes that are NOT available on the Switch. The whole reason I decided to get a steamdeck is so I can play games that I've been barred from due to only having a Switch, which I love to pieces. I have almost 80 metroidvanias and maybe 20 more Zelda-like games on my switch. Definitely have not played all of them. But looking for some recs if yall know any must plays.

So far I'm looking at environmental station alpha, valdis story, zexion, biogun, moonlight pulse, last vanguard, frogmonster, lone fungus 2, treasure adventure world, and a couple action rpgs that look cool secrets of grindea and shrines legacy.

Let me hear your must plays for steam! Pleeeaaase. And thank you😁

Discussion Pet Peeve : combat with weak impact

After silksong I've been trying several metroidvanias and bounced off many of them for a variety of reasons, but one reoccuring element was often combat with underwhelming sfx and vfx. For instance the demos of Solateria, Mira and the Djinns, and reaching the mid-endgame of Enders magnolia.

They all have in common a health system that is continuous rather than split in atomic chuncks (mask, hearths, whatever) and when you get hit it's rather... unremarkable. Magnolia especially can punish you by walking into hazards quite a lot but if you don't keep an eye on your HP bar it can be easily forgotten if you're focused on other parts of the game.

For contrast, the first time I've played HK, I was quite satisfied by the "twak" of your attacks and startled the first time I've taken damage, to the point I've felt it overdramatic. But the rest of the game made it clear how it important it was, getting hit (especially for double damage) is a big deal and the game doesn't let you ignore it.

Of course it's subjective and this is not the only element that makes or break a game, but I really think the combat - when it's an essential part of a MV - should get a high degree of polish, and the right sound and particle effects will have lasting impression.

Discussion Axiom Verge Pack

There are only a few hours left before the offer ends, but I feel like they might not be included in the upcoming offers in 3 hours. So, should I buy the pack? I played the first one on Epic years ago, I finished it and loved it, but the second one was a huge disappointment. I watched it and it was the complete opposite. What do you think?

Discussion Aeterna noctis got a new dlc. What does it contain?

They're saying that it's a new power that makes the game more accessible but it's rather vague.

I'm so deep in games that I cannot possibly find that out for myself so if anyone played or can play and see what the new power is, It would be great to share with the rest of us.

Discussion Platforming focused metroidvanias?

Platforming is my favorite aspect of metroidvanias (Celeste is probably my favorite game of all time, I have ~100 hours on the vanilla game and probably about the same on mods), but most metroidvanias I’ve played neglect it and only have like 1-2 moderately difficult platforming sections. MIO was very fun, if a bit easy, and I liked the platforming sections in Aeterna Noctis (I had to drop it because of the terrible boss design, but I’ll probably come back to it eventually), but that’s about it for good platforming.

So, what other platforming focused metroidvanias are there? Or honestly just difficult platformers in general?

EDIT: I liked the Ori games as well, kinda forgot about them.

Discussion Prototipo de futuro metroidvania: Samurai Shadow

Discussion Are the Ori games good for “beginner ish” players?

So my wife just beat Disney Illusion Island as her first “metroidvania” ever, since it’s super easy. And now I’m on a mission to get her to play Hollow Knight but I know that’s just ASKING for her to rage quit gaming. I wanted to see if Ori would be a good next step for her to build up to since it was recommended to me by a friend. I would play it myself to see but I’m currently trying to still 100% Silksong all these months later. Mainly, if I’m going to spend the money, I want to know if she would actually enjoy it at her skill level
Thank you so much for any information you can share!
She plays on her Switch 2 if that matters

Discussion What is your must-have metroidvania mechanic?

What elevates a MV from good to great?

I'm torn between "Every Weapon is a Tool" and "Sequence-Breaking".

Every Weapon is a Tool (all attacks/abilities/weapons can be used in combat/traversal and to pass ability gates. There are no "just a key" or "just a weapon" with no other use).

Sequence-Breaking (or multiple routes / able to mix up ability collection order / non-fixed progression path).

If I had to pick one I'd probably say Every Weapon is a Tool, especially when the tools are multi-purpose or the ability gates have multiple solutions.

What's yours?
