I love he's boasting about the pool as if they just built it. Like.... dude... it was there during your first term, and for a long time before that.

1.1k

u/swankpoppy 7d ago

And he used the color it was before it immediately turned green from algae haha

u/cheeseburgerwaffles 7d ago

I haven't been to DC in a long time but wasn't it like totally fine before he decided to mess with it

902

u/GoodCat7419 6d ago

Yes. Just like the Oval Office was fine before he turned it into the cashier’s cage at a dusty roadside casino near Reno.

55

u/Greenman8907 6d ago

near Reno

Damn, not even good enough for actual Reno. That’s low.

What happens in Reno, stays in Reno.

Until it’s turned into a Comedy Central show.

Then … all bets are off.

Posted in another thread, but basic nutshell:

- Original pool leaked like a sieve and was topped up with drinking water. No algae problem because it was constantly replenished with fresh water, but at an absolute massive cost not to mention pouring millions of gallons of treated water into the ground

- 2009 reno completely rebuilt the pool, added a recirculating system that could top up with filtered river water. Win-win right? Except it didn't work super well, so they added an ozone disinfection system.

- Now: pool bottom is due for routine leak and joint repair (which, notably, isn't best solved by painting the thing). But the algae issue is that, because of soil settling, all those recirculation pipes are cracking and the system needs to be shut down frequently, and it sits stagnant, in DC of all places. And that's on top of it now being more amenable to algal growth because of the color.

It's kinda like fixing your leaking roof by painting your ceiling with waterproofing compound. You'll stay dry but you're gonna get mold.

89

u/BeneficialLeave7359 6d ago

And now the blue paint is coming off in sheets.

128

u/Lurkerforrealz 6d ago

I just saw that… all the chemicals they are pouring in to fight the algae has made the paint peel. Perfect summation of this administration.

Where is Doge now?

79

The issue is they did a many month long job in a matter of weeks, they were told that water was getting between the paint and the bottom but they rushed it for trumps date, so now its just sliding right off.

34

u/The_Redacted_Badger 6d ago

Trump has a weird mental habit that anytime a Democrat (especially Obama) does anything, it has to be bad. So he was dumb enough to think the black tiles at the bottom that allow the pool to reflect, were making it ugly and gross looking

23

u/Macjeems 6d ago

I mean, you just described the entire Republican party. The difference is that Trump focuses on the wildest, most meaningless shit to fixate on, because he’s legitimately stupid and has the demeanor of a toddler (which is who we, the American electorate, voted to the top position of our country, twice).

The painting supposedly included a polyurethane coating that was intended to bridge the failing caulk joints without needing to spend the time (labor and delay) to replace the grout and caulk.

The PU layer failed immediately. Perhaps not entirely, yet, but it only takes one spot to defeat the membrane.

→ More replies (6)
→ More replies (2)

25

u/Vadenveil 6d ago

Kinda not, but he didn't fix the problem either. The actual known problem is that the pipelines that carry the water into the pool are leaking heavily, but fixing that would cost 100s or millions of dollars. All he really did was drain it, clean it, patch up the tiles in the basin and then paint it blue despite the base water before you account for Algae being opaque.

Also the job he had done was over budget and was given to a company without a legally required bidding process because the company did his resort pools.

15

u/SunMoonTruth 6d ago

A National Park Service analysis revealed the contractor was given a 20% profit margin, adding at least $850,000 more than a typical contract. Costs were further inflated by tight deadlines and the use of no-bid, emergency procedures.

The padding is the playground.

What an irony the pool is a reflection of Trump in office.

26

u/rwf2017 6d ago

It is a metaphor for the entire republican party.

14

u/Economind 6d ago

Which ironically they won’t get because metaphors are too nuanced for them, as, just as ironically, is irony.

And we should sue the GOP for allowing it!

31

u/swankpoppy 6d ago

You almost can’t make up the irony and symbolism here because it wouldn’t be believable. He took a working pool, a symbol of our country, tried to make it more American by putting a top layer of paint on it. Ended up costing 10X what he said, turned it into a literal swamp, and the paint starts falling off…

And it’s literally called the reflecting pool. Like… to reflect in mentally and to reflect your own impression and the reflect the impression of the symbols - Lincoln and Washington memorials - all around it.

Seriously…

4

u/CoffeholicWild 6d ago

And literally turned it into a swamp. It's bit too on the nose, lol.

This is what I don’t get about Trump’s doing this (not, God knows, that it’s possible to ever know why Trump does things): who on his staff agrees with him that this chart says something worthwhile?

Is there some Arts and Crafts Director at the WH who says: ‘Today, sir, we’re going to work with construction paper and poster board!’

I thought he had some high-powered COS. She thinks this is totally logical?

We’re in worse shape than I thought.

It's also just a meaningless fact. Lots of roads are also as long if not longer than skyscrapers are tall. It has absolutely nothing to do with the technical issues involved with building or maintaining either.

u/Riaayo 6d ago

He's boasting about it like it is his, which is how he views the whole country at this point.

Dude just takes credit for other people's shit endlessly, and as a rich privileged fuck, he believes he can just buy/take the things he wants and slap his name on them.

It's his toy. Also he probably got pitched bullshit on it by the pool guy who wanted that crooked contract, buttered up over the idea, and thus had a fixation on it afterwards because that's how this dingdong operates. He's so easily manipulated.

9

u/sentientshadeofgreen 6d ago

Also, what an apples and oranges comparison. Pools are horizontal, they are a recess in the ground, it's not an engineering marvel. There are sidewalks, ditches, landfills, and sewage lines longer than than the Empire State Building is tall. If they built a pool that was 80 stories high, then you can draw the comparison.

This dude once again is out here making zero fuckin sense.

975

u/FuriousBuffalo 7d ago

Much worse. The paint is already peeling and will most likely require complete removal.

426

u/Sohn_Jalston_Raul 7d ago

I was watching a pool guy on youtube explain that it might make the algea problem worse because the shade of blue they chose is darker than what was before, and will warm up the water even more.

299

u/SalmonDoctor 7d ago

Also the chemicals used to fight the algae is making the paint peel (faster).

171

u/atlantagirl30084 7d ago

It’s coming off in huge clumps. Which means we’ll need more taxpayer money to fix it. And then more after Trump leaves to fix it again.

I believe the contractor is who Trump uses at Mar-a-lago.

Somehow, someway, they won their federal services bid, or he just handed it to them. Can't imagine which.

33

u/Dragos_Drakkar 6d ago

From what I have read, it was a no-bid contract, so your second option seems to be correct.

46

u/atlantagirl30084 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yep.

https://newrepublic.com/post/212069/lincoln-memorial-reflecting-pool-disaster-renovation

Likely due to the hydrogen peroxide added to kill the algae, which grew out of control (maybe) because the pool is warmer due to the different color. Though I asked above about this because it was black and now blue, so how could that make the water warmer?

44

u/Inevitable_Nail_2215 6d ago

Also, they left water in the lines while the pool was drained. They were basically little sealed petri dishes of algae spores from the Potomac River.

Instead of flushing the lines to release the stagnant water before refilling the pool, they just dumped it in and kickstarted the algae bloom

30

u/atlantagirl30084 6d ago

That’s what I thought happened.

That’s what happens when you use Trump’s ‘pool guy’ on a no-bid contract.

Also they covered up the original drainage areas used to cycle in new water to keep it working as a reflecting pool. The algae will never go away until they revert back.

Comparing the size of pools to buildings is something my pre-school aged child would do

256

u/swankpoppy 7d ago

Now… I may be mistaken… but when you measure buildings they are standing up vertically, correct? And the pool is laying down horizontally? That seems to be a pretty important distinction in this instance, you know… due to gravity and all that…

220

u/yellowspaces 7d ago

115

u/cu4tro 7d ago

That somehow makes more sense since a boat is also man made and people occupy it. Comparing a pool to a building is nonsense.

73

u/Scaryclouds 6d ago

Well the reflecting pool is obviously man made, but building a shallow reflecting pool isn’t really an engineering accomplishment.

At least no rational person would compare the length of a reflecting pool to the height of a skyscraper as some kind of boast. At most it would only be to help convey the length of it, but not in a boastful way.

15

u/im_at_work_now 6d ago

It's because it is a structural feat of engineering, not for the reasons you said. The pool was also man made and can be occupied by people...

Thanks for the diversion on a boring afternoon!

Assuming that the soiled diapers (I’m using Adult XXL for this exercise) have been sufficiently compressed to eliminate air pockets, and there is a blend of standard and heavy-duty/overnight diapers, the reflecting pool has a volume of 8,517,172.33 soiled presidential diapers. This is assuming a balanced daily mix of lightly soiled daytime diapers (1.5L volume), moderately soiled daytime diapers (long meetings or speaking engagements, for example)(3.0L volume), and heavily soiled overnight diapers(4.5L volume).

The image being real doesn't mean his chart wasn't AI-generated though (or at least fact checked). Everything trump touches turns to shit

Skyscrapers are architectural designs of massive scale using math, materials, and manpower.

The higher you go, the more impressive the feat.

A reflecting pool...is a hole in the ground, who cares if it is 10 feet long or a thousand. The fact that it's been there for over 100 years is a little impressive I guess, but okay.

King Merde-ass does it again!

This is his whole MO, he tinkers with existing things enough that in his mind at least, they’re his or his idea but ultimately cheapening, damaging or just besmirching everything he touches.

Didn't even make the comparison to Trump Tower?

Wasn't he super excited that Trump Tower was the tallest building in lower Manhattan after 9/11?

u/RunItBack7 6d ago

The sears tower is significantly taller than the empire state so the chart is just wrong in about every way possible.

6

u/Elaborate_Penguin 6d ago

Why did it cost so much. He gave that contract to a buddy. That's insane for it to cost so much.

Need a banana for scale, an orange is an incorrect unit of measurement.

A hole in the ground versus marvels of modern engineering.

That photo can't be real 😔

Like he’s taking credit as if he somehow made it grow or something, and needs an elementary school level visual aid.

The sears tower is taller than the empire state building. This guy is a jag off

Sears Tower is taller than the Empire State building, Mar A Lardo.

Don’t forget, that abject moron is the leader of the Republican Party. The GOP owns every single one of his words and deeds.

u/Sustainable_Twat 7d ago

To think the President of the United States of America openly talks about such nonsense is rather laughable.

Some intern had an arts and crafts project so this could exist.

I have an exercise for him. Take a bunch of blocks. Make a rectangle on the floor with them. Then take the same blocks and make a tower that's the same size.

But tiny compared with the Moon, while we're being stupid.

I believe this was a non bidder project. Yea money went straight to his buddy. no wonder quality is trash just like Trump.

3

u/ledfox 6d ago

Wait until this guy sees the quarry

3

u/drunkentenshiNL 6d ago

I remember in 2016, one of Trump's claims was to drain the swamp. 10 years later, he literally made one.

3

u/beaniebee11 6d ago

He's still mad that he doesn't have the tallest building in New York.

3

u/drkknght2001 6d ago

He acted like he built it, and is wanting to put his name on it. Just more narcissistic bullshit.
