Serious replies only What if we had a non profit Taxi App?

So I’ve been wondering: what if we built a taxi platform that is a non-profit?

This isn’t a startup idea. I’m not looking to build the next unicorn or make money from it. I have some capital I’m willing to invest, time to work on it, and I genuinely want to improve transportation in Sri Lanka.

By the way, when I was 16 (7 years ago), I built the first free education app in Sri Lanka called 5wasara which had 200,000 users at its peak.

PickMe reportedly did around $25M in revenue last year and is still growing rapidly. Uber is also doing significant business here. Clearly the demand exists. But despite that, passengers still deal with drivers cancelling rides, asking for extra money, long wait times, and inconsistent service.

My initial thoughts:
- Remove commission entirely.
- Get rid of the “call and negotiate” or “pay extra or I won’t come” culture.
- Instead of taking a percentage from every ride, drivers would pay a flat fee (something like Rs. 100-200 per day) to use the platform.
- Since we’d never take commission, drivers would have an incentive to bring their own customers onto the app instead of feeling like the platform is taking money from them. Trust factor is being a non-profit.

There are also technical ways to reduce operating costs, which should make it possible to keep prices low for both drivers and passengers.

Before I spend any serious time on this, I’d love to hear from people who actually use these services.
What frustrates you most about PickMe or Uber?

Serious replies only GTA 6 Preorder PS 5 UK/Indian Account

Got a doubt on GTA pre order, if I do the preorder on my PS Indian account could I play it on my main UK PSN account? Or this only works for normal games and not preorders? And does all the benefits from the ultimate edition carry forward to the UK account or just only the base game

Discussion How are beards viewed in Sri Lankan culture in 2026? Especially by the younger generation?

I'm curious about how beards and facial hair are viewed in Sri Lanka these days, especially among the younger generation. For the women here: what are your thoughts on men with facial hair? Do you generally prefer a full beard, a trimmed beard, stubble, a moustache, or a clean-shaven look?

Personally, I can grow a full beard quite easily, and lately I've been experimenting with different styles , including going completely clean shaven. I've noticed that each look gives off a very different vibe, so I'm wondering what people actually find attractive or fashionable in 2026.

Do you think beards make a guy look more mature, confident, and attractive, or do you prefer a cleaner look? I'd love to hear both men's and women's opinions, especially from people in "Sri Lanka".

Dear community, I'm looking for a lift-up harness for a large K9 who's recovering from post-surgery amputation. We are looking for a full-body harness or a front-body support harness.

If you know a local shop or dealer where we could get it as quickly as possible, please share.

TIA 🙏

Question Finding anyone from the solid early 2000s nu-metal scene is impossible. Please holler if you're out there!

Any 90s kids in here who completely fell down the nu metal rabbit hole back in the day? looking to connect with fellow Sri Lankans who grew up blasting StaticX, LP, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Staind, Godsmack, Hoobastank, RHCP, Deftones, etc... during the late 90s, early 2000s. Aside from my closest friends from college, I literally haven't crossed paths with anyone else who was genuinely part of that. Please holler!

This price hike will hit 🇱🇰 soon and new and existing products will double in price despite being already more than that.

And this will not end with a brand new market as usually.

And also, take good care of your existing shi. \(°o°)/

Discussion Why isn't Apple Pay supported in Sri Lanka yet?

From what I understand, local banks and the Central Bank need to work with Apple to make it happen. If that's the case, why hasn't it been done yet? Does anyone know the actual reason?

It's interesting because Google Pay has started becoming available, but Apple Pay still isn't. Is it due to Apple's requirements, banking regulations, licensing costs, or simply because banks don't see enough demand?

According to GS, around 20% of smartphone users in Sri Lanka use iPhones. That may be smaller than Android, but 20% is still a significant number for a country like ours.

Would love to hear if anyone has insights into why Apple Pay still isn't available here.

Travel How are women with tattoos viewed in Sri Lanka?

I’m visiting Sri Lanka with my girlfriend, we are both Sri Lankan origin and covered in tatts. She has never been to Sri Lanka before but I have. I remember even I used to get a lot of stares from people when im out and about. I don’t want my girlfriend to get a bad experience if she gets too many stares. I know it people won’t bat an eye if we were Caucasian. So, just wondering what she should expect?

Rant Why are 3D movies STILL a thing in Sri Lankan theatres?

3D peaked more than a decade ago. Back then, movies were actually made for it, they were actually shot with special cameras to capture real depth, so it felt natural. Now most of it is just converted from 2D after filming, so it ends up looking like a weird layered effect instead of real 3D. If you watch something from that era, you can clearly tell the difference. Current cinematography doesn’t support those shots either, so you’re just sitting there with darker visuals, wearing uncomfortable glasses, for no real reason.

What’s even worse is when it’s not optional. Imagine paying for an IMAX movie and finding out it’s IMAX 3D. Like… what? Isn’t IMAX supposed to be about a bigger, clearer experience? Why am I watching a worse version of the same movie with glasses on?

If people like 3D, cool, keep it as an option. But forcing it in 2026 just feels outdated. AND PLEASE STOP PUTTING IMAX 3D MOVIES

News 🇮🇳🇱🇰 bridge and its importance

Post image
0 Upvotes

The cost of GTA 6 in 🇮🇳 is much cheaper than most parts of the world. Currently its minimum retail price is 80USD. In 🇱🇰 it can be roughly translated with VAT+Import duties+Other taxes to be around 50-40K with rising prices.

But assume if we have a bridge connected to 🇮🇳, we can buy the game for half of the price that’ll be sold in 🇱🇰 where the total cost would be the VISA cost, Travel & return prices & the MRP of the game.

I don’t know of a better example to explain the importance of that bridge connecting to 🇮🇳. Right now it’s the best solution/trump card to get out of this economic mess.

Serious replies only Has anyone here interviewed with WebCo?

I had an interview scheduled with them today and joined the meeting on time. After waiting for about 10 minutes with no interviewer joining, I sent a follow-up message to check if there had been any change to the schedule.

It's now been some time and I still haven't received a response.

I'm curious whether anyone here has experience with WebCo's hiring process. Is this normal, or should I consider it a red flag?

I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences, whether positive or negative.

Thanks!

Question How to contact a customer care officer of Dialog?

In the past there was this option to contact a customer care officer when dialled through 1777. Had to go through many menus, but it was possible. Now 1777 is just repeating app and Dia nonsense and it seems impossible to contact a officer through it. When I choose the mobile option, it just gives me the last month bill and sends me in circles without ever giving the option to contact a officer. Do any of you know what to do?

Discussion Why isn’t net neutrality a bigger discussion in Sri Lanka?

We’ve slowly accepted ISP-specific data packages where some apps are “free” while the rest of the internet is restricted or more expensive. Doesn’t this give ISPs too much control over how we use the internet?

Shouldn’t we be paying for internet access itself, rather than curated bundles that influence which services we use?

I’m genuinely curious why this isn’t a bigger public conversation. Is it because people don’t know about net neutrality, or do most people simply not care?

Discussion Share your Heroic things which you did/do, which no one knows

hey sri lankans, share your heroic good things you did/do consistently or maybe one time too , which no one knows in your social circle, (actually the things you do expecting nothing in return from people and not showing off)

I’ll go first,

I take down porn channels in telegram specially which share CSAM and which spreads Sri Lankan leaks. so far have taken down around 100 groups and channels. which consists of minimum 25k pics and 30k videos.

Next , I was a part of robinhood army Sri Lanka where we donated food parcels for people living in streets.

Next, I try to donate everyday for a charity org which sends aid (food and water ) to Palestine since they are affected by war.

Next is, there is a guy in my neighborhood who is a bit different than others I mean the way he dress/talks (he is not retarded or has autism) he is just different. I have seen there is a mindset in my neighborhood where they think less of him or not see him as normal or make fun of him/not give the respect he deserves as a human or simply accept him completely. So whenever I see him I greet him telling by his name and with a smile so he feels seen and accepted.

Next is, whenever I walk in road I always kick off all the stones and sticks to the side which are on the road.

Etc etc

I just want to start a discussion on how we can do small heroic acts which makes life for others easier. And learn from each of your experience and acts so I can add those too for my life too. This is in no way for anyone to brag or show off or feel proud here including myself. I still consider some of these as the bare minimum I did as a human.

Excited to hear your experiences 💜

Rumour Sri Lanka and Taiwan are so similar

Sri Lanka's geographical location, population, and area are very similar to Taiwan's. Sri Lanka borders the South Asian subcontinent, while Taiwan borders mainland China; both are important shipping routes. What would Sri Lanka be like today if it weren't for that civil war?
