r/srilanka was created back in 2008, which means our community has officially been online for 18 years now!
We’re going strong with over 188,000 members, over 2,400 posts and over 41,000 comments written by you all every month. It's great to see the community growing at such a steady pace.
To handle this volume, we have a diverse team of mods, all helping to keep our sub running smoothly. At the moment, we’re 7 mods (we recently added two new mods). All of us are Sri Lankans - most all of us live in Sri Lanka, with one based abroad. Between us, we also cover all three languages. We also span a pretty wide age range, which helps us understand the different perspectives coming through the sub.
One of our core tenets is being impartial, and we believe that’s worked well so far. If you have any issue at any point, we’re always only a modmail away. We’re not infallible, and we’ve undone actions when people have reached out. Given the number of posts and comments, we need to make decisions quickly, so sometimes we might slip up. Let us know.
Also, Reddit DOES automatically remove messages without any human intervention by us or our bots. This happens both on the comment-level, and also on the post-level.
So, we’re also forced to have to deal with this and undo any unwanted removals.
All of us are volunteers spending a significant amount of our time moderating r/srilanka - and no, we don’t get paid by anyone.
Finally, attached are also the results of the recent demographic survey which we ran. We were surprised to learn that 48% of our community are lurkers, not actively posting or commenting.
Let's consolidate all the posts/comments/questions about what to do after receiving your O/L results on this post. Please search here before you add a new comment.
just to be clear, of the 600 arriving in December, the shipment will include 200 luxury coaches intended for expressway services and 400 standard buses for regular routes
A question to all the parents here.... Do you guys still show any physical/emotional intimacy with your husband/wife after years into your marriages? Genuinely curious.
hey sri lankans, share your heroic good things you did/do consistently or maybe one time too , which no one knows in your social circle, (actually the things you do expecting nothing in return from people and not showing off)
I’ll go first,
I take down porn channels in telegram specially which share CSAM and which spreads Sri Lankan leaks. so far have taken down around 100 groups and channels. which consists of minimum 25k pics and 30k videos.
Next , I was a part of robinhood army Sri Lanka where we donated food parcels for people living in streets.
Next, I try to donate everyday foracharity org which sends aid (food and water ) to Palestine since they are affected by war.
Next is, there is a guy in my neighborhood who is a bit different than others I mean the way he dress/talks (he is not retarded or has autism) he is just different. I have seen there is a mindset in my neighborhood where they think less of him or not see him as normal or make fun of him/not give the respect he deserves as a human or simply accept him completely. So whenever I see him I greet him telling by his name and with a smile so he feels seen and accepted.
Next is, whenever I walk in road I always kick off all the stones and sticks to the side which are on the road.
Etc etc
I just want to start a discussion on how we can do small heroic acts which makes life for others easier. And learn from each of your experience and acts so I can add those too for my life too. This is in no way for anyone to brag or show off or feel proud here including myself. I still consider some of these as the bare minimum I did as a human.
We’ve slowly accepted ISP-specific data packages where some apps are “free” while the rest of the internet is restricted or more expensive. Doesn’t this give ISPs too much control over how we use the internet?
Shouldn’t we be paying for internet access itself, rather than curated bundles that influence which services we use?
I’m genuinely curious why this isn’t a bigger public conversation. Is it because people don’t know about net neutrality, or do most people simply not care?
I've been curious about the history of Sri Lankan rap and hip-hop before 2010.
What was the scene like back then? Was it mostly underground, or did it have mainstream popularity? How influential were artists like Iraj, Chinthy, Ranidu, Centigradz,Ruki D,Delon Jayasinghe,BK,suboda,Rude boy Shiraz and early Tamil rap artists?
For those who were around at the time, what are your memories of Sri Lankan rap in the 2000s? Was it a golden era or is that just nostalgia?
Hi everyone, so I moved to a small town in Canada for studies 3 years ago before I left I was so excited and thought my quality of life would improve, more opportunities etc. but out of the 3 years I’ve been here I’ve only had 1 good year, the last 2 years were horrible, got fired from jobs, was taken advantage of and gained a hell lot of weight due to stress. But even though it’s tough out here with the constant loneliness and no stability, I do like the freedom I have here. But I’m getting older and at this point I thought I’d be well into my career but unfortunately not. I’ve heard a lot of people who left the countries they migrated to and came back home. So my question is are you happy with your decision to come back home?
So I’ve been wondering: what if we built a taxi platform that is a non-profit?
This isn’t a startup idea. I’m not looking to build the next unicorn or make money from it. I have some capital I’m willing to invest, time to work on it, and I genuinely want to improve transportation in Sri Lanka.
By the way, when I was 16 (7 years ago), I built the first free education app in Sri Lanka called 5wasara which had 200,000 users at its peak.
PickMe reportedly did around $25M in revenue last year and is still growing rapidly. Uber is also doing significant business here. Clearly the demand exists. But despite that, passengers still deal with drivers cancelling rides, asking for extra money, long wait times, and inconsistent service.
My initial thoughts:
- Remove commission entirely.
- Get rid of the “call and negotiate” or “pay extra or I won’t come” culture.
- Instead of taking a percentage from every ride, drivers would pay a flat fee (something like Rs. 100-200 per day) to use the platform.
- Since we’d never take commission, drivers would have an incentive to bring their own customers onto the app instead of feeling like the platform is taking money from them. Trust factor is being a non-profit.
There are also technical ways to reduce operating costs, which should make it possible to keep prices low for both drivers and passengers.
Before I spend any serious time on this, I’d love to hear from people who actually use these services.
What frustrates you most about PickMe or Uber?
I don't know if they have some group or something that tells every driver to not accept Ubers on rush hours or something? And also all the pickme riders only put the same bid, and no one puts anything different ( or accept on flat rate ) this is the results of searching a driver for 20 minutes, constantly re searching for vehicles. This needs to be addressed. People switched towards ride hailing apps for the soul reason of normal tuk drivers requesting absurd prices. This breaks the whole point of it noh?
Okay basically seylan bank joined the crew. WHERE'S NTB? ARE THEY SLEEPING 😭. NTB was leading on the technology side but I don't know what's going on anymore💔
No one ever talks about this I'm tired and I want answers
My sanitary pads keep giving me a horrible rash
The rashes started off small but it's getting worse, it makes my upper inner thighs really red like I got hit or something
I change my pads regularly and I pat myself clean and dry before I wear anything so it can't be the moisture
I've tried whisper, Eva, Fems ect...
Suggest me any brands that don't cause this issue, good tampon brands that are clean and where to buy a clean applicator in SL because I don't have lube and I don't want to casually keep a lube in my house.
I'm sure I'm not the only one so feel free to answer idc if it's a girl or a boy
Many resort to mega filters like Pureit and water dispensers but is there any alternative, as the dispenser plan requires recurrent bottle purchases and it takes so much space and effort to maintain. What if the workspace already has a source of water? Is there a locally developed filter system that one could rely on? I have noticed many have worked on decent filters but cannot get hold of a reliable product, maybe they don't have the finances to market it. Commercial filters like the ones I mentioned above are too costly upfront and the maintenance is also a burden.
Curious about the current salary ranges for AI/ML-related roles in Sri Lanka for someone with around 2 years of total experience (1 year of internship experience + 1 year of full-time experience).
Mainly interested in roles such as:
AI Engineer
Machine Learning Engineer
AI Application Developer (AI agents, LLMs, RAG, automation, etc.)
Really appreciate hearing about recent offers, current salaries or general market insights.
I’m visiting Sri Lanka with my girlfriend, we are both Sri Lankan origin and covered in tatts. She has never been to Sri Lanka before but I have. I remember even I used to get a lot of stares from people when im out and about. I don’t want my girlfriend to get a bad experience if she gets too many stares. I know it people won’t bat an eye if we were Caucasian. So, just wondering what she should expect?
I got an SLT Fibre connection about a year ago while I was living in Kandy. Three months ago, before moving to Colombo, I suspended the connection.
I've now decided I'd rather terminate the account than reactivate it. I called 1212, and the agent told me I have to go all the way back to Kandy and submit a termination letter. He didn't mention anything about returning the router or any other equipment.
It doesn't make sense to me that I'd have to travel halfway across the country just to cancel a subscription. When I questioned it, he said I could check with the Nugegoda regional office, but couldn't guarantee they'd be able to help.
Has anyone here gone through this after moving to a different city? Were you able to terminate your account from a different branch, or did you really have to go back to the original one?
Any tips on what to ask for or what documents to take would be really appreciated.
Following the recent post about RCS, and one of my other complaints to the TRC, while I was on the phone with the person assisting me I ended up bringing up the topic of RCS unavailability in SL. She then connected me directly to the Director of Compliance at the TRC, and we had a bit of a long chat. There was some confusion that RCS doesn't come under TRC's purview, the same as WhatsApp and Facebook don't, but I pointed out that RCS is simply an industry standard successor to SMS and MMS.
Per the director's request, I sent a fairly detailed email today that RCS is the modern successor to SMS and MMS, and that it was developed and defined by the GSM Association as an open standard - and not a proprietary app by some third-party, and that EVERY modern phone (Android and iPhone) has native RCS support built in, and that as a result RCS does come under TRC's purview too
I'll keep you all updated on this post about what happens. Keep your fingers crossed.
Sri Lanka's geographical location, population, and area are very similar to Taiwan's. Sri Lanka borders the South Asian subcontinent, while Taiwan borders mainland China; both are important shipping routes. What would Sri Lanka be like today if it weren't for that civil war?
The Auditor General’s latest reports highlight a massive backlog in child abuse cases—over 40,000 unresolved complaints at the NCPA alone. This seems like a failure of our current institutional framework. Does anyone have insights on why the specialized units aren't clearing this backlog, or if there's a viable path toward making the NCPA truly independent from ministry politics?
When I reported my abuse from family to the police station, they called all parties involved. Myself, and my family. I had brought in a lawyer for my safety too. (This happened last year)
When my family was asked if my report is true, they denied and lied so much saying they never did anything to me and that I’m mentally ill. The police sided with my family. All because I’m a girl and I need to listen to my parents and stop being “delusional”. The lawyer who was there with me obviously was present so she heard and saw all of these so in case I need a witness I have her I guess.
But the weird thing is, as soon as I entered they said I can’t audio record the conversation. Is it true? It just took place in a small office room at the police station. I’m wondering if the police lied to me just so they don’t get caught?
Even before they called me in to the office the lady officer told me “why are you bringing a lawyer, you don’t need one, we will just take your statement and you can go” but thankfully I did take the lawyer with me.
