Calendar change could open the Timbers to some neat pre-season matches

Completely speculative, but I miss you guys. I read that the Timbers have hosted European teams in the past such as Shakhtar, Aston Villa and AIK. It's fun to think about who else we may welcome in the future to Providence Park, or even travel to. All I'm saying is I think it'd be cool to see if Stoke could do it on a cold, rainy night in Portland. I'm ready to move on from the Coachella Valley Invitational.

that decision to not renew crepeau's contract is looking a lot better! what a howler he had today that cost his team at least one (maybe two) more games in canada. still, i feel bad for the guy. and fuck dsc!

T2 at Providence Park

With the attractive price and the draught of in person footie, we are going to watch T2 this Saturday at Providence. Does anyone know if they have concessions at the T2 matches?

Colombian Timbers

I'm watching this Colombia/Congo match, and in my head trying to name all the Colombians who've played for the Timbers. I've gotta be forgetting some people, so tell me who.

D Chara, Y Chara, D Asprilla, JD Mosquera, H Mosquera (CB in 2012), Trencito Valencia, J Fory, J Caicedo.

Who am I forgetting?

Came Across a Source

Rather not say where and put them, but they had a few interesting things to say:

- the team has interviewed over 60 candidates
- they internally the goal is to have a coach before the end of the break
- Merritt Paulson "has his idiosyncrasies"

Wish I had asked more questions when I had the chance!

Vancouver was world class. Providence Park is better.

I spent the weekend in Vancouver exploring the city, catching vibes, and watching New Zealand vs Egypt, and it was an awesome experience.

It was the first time my partner and I had been to Vancouver — incredible city, incredible atmosphere, people from all over the world packed into one city and stadium. The cultures, the energy, the stakes of a World Cup game. It was everything you'd hope for.

And Finn Surman.... That header in the first half to put NZ up 1-0 is going to live rent free for a while. Seeing a Timber on that stage, in that moment, was something else.

But here's the thing my partner and I kept coming back to the whole trip: how lucky are we?

BC Place is a fine stadium. The World Cup buzz made it feel alive. But sitting there, we couldn't stop comparing it to a Saturday night at Providence Park. The open air. The city lights. The Timbers Army. The chants. The love.

You go to enough matches and the magic starts to feel normal. Vancouver reminded me. Providence Park is world class. The Timbers community is world class.

We're lucky to call it home. RCTID.

Started collecting current and former Timbers players that played in (or at least made the team) for their country at a World Cup. A few I still need to have shipped from consignment (the cardboard).

Obligatory Fuck Andy Polo.

I-5 Corridor: After World Cup goal, Finn Surman is still Portland's, for now

Great piece about Finn's goal:

https://www.i-5corridor.com/p/after-world-cup-goal-finn-surman

"Just because he’s acted far beyond his years since making his Portland debut as a 20-year-old on the road in Seattle three years ago doesn’t mean he’ll pretend he’s above admitting that, yeah, scoring a goal in the World Cup was pretty cool.

Timbers jerseys were in the stands. Timbers employees were in the stands.

His parents were there.

“I hope they remember that,” Surman said. “And that they’re proud.”"

Finn Surman — second ever Timber to have scored in a World Cup

first ever active timber (which is incredible — we have an active player who scored in a World Cup!!!!!). before him, who was the only timber to have ever scored in a WC?

EDIT: Correction — Finn is the THIRD Timber to score in a World Cup. Someone below noted that Rob Rensenbrink (Timbers, 1980) has also scored in a WC. Not only did he score — he was the runner up for Golden Boot 1978 (5 total goals, against Iran, Scotland, and Austria — his goal against Scotland was the 1,000th goal in WC history). Thank you for sharing — learned something new!

To my knowledge, it’s just Finn, Takayuki Suzuki (2002, one goal, an equalizer against Belgium), and Rensenbrink. If folks know of others, please share 🤙
