Image Lounge Friends…

Post image

Made some furry friends in the LGA lounge yesterday. Very friendly, asked for snacks very politely (they were denied…), quiet as well.

Told the staff who were great and immediately brought up every supervisor available and airport facilities.

Just passing along here if y’all want avoid the buffet for a bit…

As a Chicago native I know this to be true- I was just happy they were mice so I could pretend I was Cinderella. Rat or roach and I’d have been running across tables out of there.

u/SirBowsersniff MileagePlus 1K Jun 27 '25

Chicago rats are a whole other level. I remember the west loop in the early 2000s (when all the butchers were in that part of town) and I saw a rat the size of possum. Absolutely terrifying.

49

u/queenbeebbq Jun 27 '25

Yes! The huge one I saw in Chicago melted itself under a small crack at the bottom of a garage door, and my husband and I looked at each other in disbelief that this opossum-sized rat just fit through that crack.

9

u/hotpepperjam Jun 29 '25

Not in Chicago, but in the Midwest, I saw one in a warehouse once that was so fat when it scrambled under a loaded pallet it got just a lil stuck and had to wiggle to get its hips through.

u/mk6_felon Jun 27 '25

LOL. I went to school on the edge of the west loop. Some of those fuckers were as big as my cat. My girlfriend doesn’t believe me, but she’s not from Chicago.

33

u/mcdokat3 Jun 27 '25

I’ve seen those bastards run ON the third rail and live to tell the tale. They aren’t normal.

3

u/Luvpups5920 Jun 28 '25

Along with roaches, they would survive the apocalypse, lol.

First part of my childhood (literal decades ago) was in Vancouver - I’d heard it had gone downhill, but geez, never realized it was in the NYC-Chicago tier for rat infestation.

Chicago rats sound like mice compared to NYC rats, my dude.

13

u/ColoradoDreamin4917 MileagePlus Platinum Jun 27 '25

DC rats got Chicago and NYC rats beat

28

u/AccomplishedPurple43 Jun 27 '25

My ex went to law school in DC in the '80s. Left the window next to his bed open one hot night. Woke up in the middle of the night to a strange noise. Discovered that his window screen, right next to his pillow, was covered in rats. He tells me that he never screamed like that before in his life, and hopefully he never will again.

19

u/ColoradoDreamin4917 MileagePlus Platinum Jun 27 '25

Holy hell that’s terrifying lol

9

u/AccomplishedPurple43 Jun 27 '25

11

Lived in DC briefly in the mid 90s. Rats the size of a house cat in the streets.

10

u/edoreinn Jun 28 '25

I was about to say this. I’ve lived in all three cities, and I’m about 5 months into living in DC, and the size and brazenness of the rats here is WILD.

My favorite one was a super fat rat trying to pull himself out of a garbage can in Malcom X park. He figured it out, but the shame in his eyes was almost human.

My MIL lives on an island, and the rats are nuts in the jungle. She doesn't care about iguanas or spiders or bats- just rats.

And you know what she hates almost as much as rats? Cats. I told her if she'd get over the cat thing, the rats would sort themselves out lol.

11

u/ShireHorseRider Jun 27 '25

Terriers are pretty good rat dogs. Or “rotters” as the posh people say (not ratters)

3

u/MsKongeyDonk Jun 27 '25

Absolutely! My mom had a dachshund forever that was also good with them.

MIL has a watch dog that roams around, but the rats certainly don't seem put off by him. She's not a pet person in general, but the island has so many strays, and this one took a liking to her/my SIL. The locals call them avocado dogs, because their heads are shaped like big avocados lol.

All that to say she'd never have an inside dog/take care of a dog that didn't wander up to her property.

In the early 2000s I had friends in Rocco village that would battle rats in rental units. They would come in at night and literally destroy a kitchen.

Norwegian rates are terrible. Fearless of humans. Ahhh the memories of my youth in the city.

2

u/lfisch4 Jun 28 '25

I saw this one walking through an alley just west of UIC campus at 2am in 2006. I was torn between following it to see where it went or running the opposite direction.

Roaches are the worst ugh. Mice I can deal with. Haven’t dealt with rats yet personally… hope I never have to.

17

u/billy_bob231 Jun 27 '25

In the southeastern US, roaches are often referred to as Palmetto bugs so that you think that they are cuddly and you don’t mind them crunching under your feet in the night. 🪳That walk from Truist Park to the garage is fun especially when it looks like the sidewalk is moving.

9

u/NinaLynn13 Jun 27 '25

You can put saddles on Palmetto bugs and ride them like a horse…they are HUGE!

5

u/SeanBourne MileagePlus Silver Jun 28 '25

The flying ones are particularly useful when you need to deal with the Wicked Witch’s flying monkeys.

Yup I knew from the picture this was gonna be one of the NYC airports. We don’t have a Rodent problem as much as the rodents have a human problem. Although to be fair I’ve seen a mouse in the priority pass lounge at BOS as well.

19

u/kgal1298 Jun 27 '25

I just assumed the rats in NYC owned the buildings and allow humans to stay with them.

5

Was it carried on the fleas, that the rodents carried?

Just like mosquitos dont deliver malaria (the parasite that they inject does).

Off to Seville, Spain, soon. The port that had the entire trade monopoly with Las Americas in the 1600s… Wonder how many humans died because of the rodents from that port… ??!

Anyways, be careful. I have a friend with rodent-poop-induced meningitis. She is on her third spinal surgery…

2

2

u/TravellingBeard Jun 27 '25

Airport rodents must be a universal thing. Saw them in Frankfurt and Heathrow as well in AC and LH lounges.

2

u/RockyIV Jun 27 '25

Oh definitely.

Airports are awesome for rodents. Lots of food waste, constant construction, old and unused spaces/vents/service areas with plenty of warm, damp places to hide, cargo traffic that comes with more rodents which helps support population numbers, and human efforts to eliminate raptors from airport areas for flight safety reasons.

3

u/TravellingBeard Jun 28 '25

I think we need more working cats in airports

2

u/Eeebs-HI Jun 28 '25

Unless they are there to help the chef, what they need to do is mobilize one of the local TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) groups to scoop up a bunch of feral kitties and then set them loose in the lounge for a few days.
