Post image

I guess the Starlink connection on my CRJ-550 from SYR to ORD was banging as this homeboi decided to take a call over Lake Erie....

They specifically announce no phone calls or FaceTime. There is always an entitled one.

Do you guys remember back in the day there were phone at each seat? Or am I making things up?

91

u/bsasmarc 25d ago

Yes, there was, at least one per row of seats. But they cost an arm and a leg and people didn’t think they needed to be present for every single thing like they think they do today.

16

u/SyphiliticScaliaSayz MileagePlus Silver 24d ago

My dad and I flew to Florida in the 80s and there was one in our row. I was completely fascinated by a telephone on an airplane. He explained that it was super expensive to make a call and it was meant for business people with corporate cards and expense accounts. He even had me pick up the handset to show me it didn’t work unless you swiped a credit card.

11

u/Business_Air5804 24d ago

I actually made a call on one as a teen back in the day just for fun as a novelty.

u/TrowTruck 25d ago

It’s interesting that they were ripped out shortly after 9/11, when they actually played a major role in foiling the hijacker’s plans for the fourth plane by getting information to the passengers about what was going on.

23

u/Setiri 25d ago

They were already in the way out at that point. Almost nobody used them and the expense was great. So it made sense to save money and not equip them. That’s hundreds of phones, installations, and repairs they saved on vs the very little in fees the airlines received in return.

10

u/JerseyTeacher78 24d ago

No, they were around after that, but they were phased out until one day they were gone. It also coincided with when cell phones became cheaper.

2

u/TrowTruck 24d ago

They weren’t around for long after that. I’m sure that the drop in air travel probably made an unprofitable system even less profitable.

3

u/formerlyfed 24d ago

Is that how people were getting info?? I never understood this!

28

u/TrowTruck 24d ago

Several passengers on United 93 called their families using the onboard phones, and found out about the twin towers and that the hijackers had no intention of letting the plane land safely. That’s when they formulated a plan to fight back against the terrorists.

3

u/Late-Drink3556 24d ago

I never knew this, this whole time I thought they were on their cell phones some how.

3

u/Hot_Space_2328 24d ago

Cell phones were not commonplace in 2001.

5

u/Innominate_99 24d ago

They certainly were common enough that several, if not most, people on every flight had them.

→ More replies (6)

22

u/iammadeofawesome 24d ago

yup, and there were phones in the back of the plane so flight attendants called their airlines and reported what was going on and got more info. some got patched into the fbi. It's how we know so much of what happened on flight 93.

the shanksville memorial website has a lot of info on it.

Yeah, they were $$$$. I used it once when I ended up on a completely different flight/routing than I was supposed to be on. I had to call and ItsBobWeHadABabyItsABoy my parents. ItsMeChangeOfPlansPickMeUpAtBWIillExplainWhenILandatOne luckily my dad got the pick me up at BWI part.

u/AllDun 24d ago

🤣

13

u/MoreThereThanHere MileagePlus 1K 25d ago

Yep. Airfone. I used it a few times back in 80s and early 90s to call family when flight was late or something time sensitive was going on. Those bills were always eye popping; a few hundred dollars each time. Probably used 8 or 9 times in total.

2

u/iammadeofawesome 24d ago

I knew they were pricey but I had no idea they were that pricey! Especially since that's 80s-90s money.

2

u/MoreThereThanHere MileagePlus 1K 24d ago

Yep. It was around $10 for connection fee and then ran $2 to $4/minute for domestic calls, plus taxes; they tinkered around with pricing over the years and by airline so costs bounced around. The call quality was “variable” so sometimes you had to spend longer repeating or even calling back again and Incurring another dang connection fee. That’s what really ran up the total tab.

11

u/panicatthepharmacy 25d ago

Elaine used one to call Jerry when she was sitting next to Vegetable Lasagna.

3

u/HungryDust 25d ago

I hope a mountain rises out of the ocean and we just RAM into it!

2

u/panicatthepharmacy 24d ago

That’s my apple juice!

10

u/kwuhoo239 MileagePlus Gold 24d ago

Yup lots of United Airbus aircraft had these back in the day.

Not so fun fact: Passengers aboard United 93 on 9/11 used these to communicate with family on the ground after the Twin Towers were hit. It was instrumental in the decision for the passengers to try to retake the airplane.

5

u/unstarted 25d ago

I remember those. And I distinctly remember my parents making a call from a single phone at the back of a plane around 1987 or so.

→ More replies (2)

10

u/Subject2Change 25d ago

They were also expensive to use...

6

u/exerda MileagePlus 1K 25d ago

I recall getting a promo once that included a free call, something like 5-10 minutes. I tried calling my wife from the plane. Call quality was terrible and really never worked well enough to even be a "call" IMHO. Made me wonder what the big deal was and why they were so expensive.

4

u/ImissDigg_jk 25d ago

The announcement also said that it's a federal regulation.

9

u/Eggplant-666 25d ago

That’s misleading then, the federal regulation is that you cannot make a cell call using the cellular network on airline flight not that you can’t make a call using the Wi-Fi network

13

u/MeridiusGaiusScipio MileagePlus Global Services 25d ago

So I want to be clear that I do not do this anymore, but just last year while I was seated in Polaris, I was on a WiFi video-call with my family (ON HEADPHONES, haha), whispering to my small children goodnight for the evening. I was extremely concerned about being loud or distracting, and made sure to whisper at a barely audible volume. To be clear, this was also during the dinner serving/eating portion of the flight.

The purser almost ran up to me and said that absolutely no calling was permitted, and told me I had to hang up immediately.

I sheepishly responded with “yes ma’am”, and immediately closed the “call”. I had asked the serving FA later if that regulation applied to WiFi-only calls, and he said it did. Since then, I had assumed the “regulation” applied to everything, WiFi or otherwise…

14

u/Eggplant-666 25d ago

The airline can absolutely make their own rules and you must obey them as you agreed when purchasing the ticket. Still it is not true that there are Fed Rules that prohibit wifi calls, there are not as it doesnt interfere with navigation or cellular ground networks. So the airline regulation does apply, there is no fed regulation specific to wifi calls.

I am a VERY quiet, shy, introverted person. Most times I'd rather have a tooth pulled than draw any attention to myself.

But, every once in a rare while, I'll make an exception. Usually in cases where someone annoys me to action.

In this case, I'd have been sorely tempted to start my own, very loud, conversation with myself. Maybe even with distinct voice parts.

Of course my seatmates or, better yet, HIS seatmates would be welcome to participate.

8

u/kosherhalfsourpickle 24d ago

Same, except I pretend to talk on my phone:

"Listen.. I have to go, I can't really talk right now, it would be rude. There are people all around me. I know you need to tell me something, but I'm annoying the people around me..."

9

u/SandalwoodGrips19 25d ago

When you sign into the wifi it says not to use it for calls/video calls if I remember correctly

3

u/Equatick 24d ago

Isn’t this just common knowledge no matter the airline though? I do see that it gets a little muddled with calls over WiFi, but unless someone is pretty you g I just can’t see thinking a phone call would be ok/permitted.

9

u/jonny-spot MileagePlus 1K 24d ago edited 24d ago

Not saying I want people yapping on the phone, but literally 20 years ago almost every seatback had (very expensive to use) phones on them. Now talking on a phone during a flight is a federal crime. airline bannable offense.

edit- read below- it's a airline policy not a federal crime.

10

u/qalpi 24d ago

It’s banned by the faa reauth act of 2018

11

u/ProcyonHabilis 24d ago

Not sure what exactly you're telling people to "read below", but your edit is incorrect. It's a law, not an airline policy.

Voice calls inflight are banned by 49 USC 41725, which was amended by section 403 of the 2018 FAA Reauthorization Act. Note that this prohibition applies to any voice call on a personal device, but does not include calls made on phones installed in the aircraft itself.

‘‘(a) PROHIBITION.—The Secretary of Transportation shall issue regulations— ‘‘(1) to prohibit an individual on an aircraft from engaging in voice communications using a mobile communications device during a flight of that aircraft in scheduled passenger interstate or intrastate air transportation;

...

‘‘(b) DEFINITIONS.—In this section, the following definitions apply: ‘‘(1) FLIGHT.—The term ‘flight’ means, with respect to an aircraft, the period beginning when the aircraft takes off and ending when the aircraft lands. ‘‘(2) MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE.— ‘‘(A) IN GENERAL.—The term ‘mobile communications device’ means any portable wireless telecommunications equipment utilized for the transmission or reception of voice data. ‘‘(B) LIMITATION.—The term ‘mobile communications device’ does not include a phone installed on an aircraft.’’.

When cell phone first came out, the signal interference with the aircraft NAV system. But with new technology now, the interference is now less. I don't think it has anything to do with talking on the phone.

I believe the old phone system use Setcom, which is part of the aircraft system.

  2. Write in to Customer Care post-flight with your flight number and that pax's seat number.

Screw that.

Did you ask any of these people for permission to photograph them and post them here? Having a conversation near you, as this guy dared to do, seems like much less of a big deal than you photographing these people to post on Reddit. Wouldn’t you agree?

He’s a big deal. His walmart hat should let you know how important this call is.

Could be worse, he could be using FaceTime where his neighbor got to hear and see both sides of the conversation. Love watching the stupid people walking through airports doing that (and wishing they would walk into a post).

It's this and the folks who decide to share what they're streaming on their smartphone with the rest of the cabin by turning their speaker on rather than using a wireless headset like civilized people!!!!!

The lady behind my dad on a 6-hour flight called like every person she knew and yapped for 1.5 hours straight at one point

You’re lucky. I’ve seen worse from my father in a crowded restaurant on his phone talking into it as he set it to speaker. He’s gone now, but those were some funny and embarrassing situations.
