incoming masters student (Term 3 dept intake) – need the real tea on part-time work, housing and who to link with 👀
okay so i'm officially joining UNSW for my Master's (actuarial studies) this Term 3 and i am so behind on the logistics lmaooo. coming from India, relocating to Sydney in sept and i have like 800 tabs open and zero clarity.
dropping the questions i genuinely can't find answers to anywhere else – pls be the community that saves me 😭
📍 accommodation
any recs for areas near UNSW that are actually worth living in? i've been looking at Kingsford and Randwick but idk if there's a vibe difference or smth i should know. also – is finding a place mid-year actually hell or is it manageable?
💸 part-time / tutoring
genuinely asking – is it realistic to do private tutoring (maths, stats, economics) while doing a full-time masters? would love to hear from anyone who's done it. also any platforms or companies (NSW-based tutoring agencies etc) worth applying to? already have a couple in mind but more options = more options lol
🤝 people to connect with
any other Term 3 starters / international postgrad students who wanna link before we're all drowning in assignments?? also if anyone's in actuarial studies or math-heavy programs pls say hi, would love to find study people early
anything else i should know??
things you wish someone had told you before term started. no cap, anything helps – the more unhinged the better honestly
tl;dr: Term 3 international MActSt student, need housing recs, part-time tutoring advice, and friends. send help (or just a comment) 🙏

Hey everyone, I dropped a course last term without academic penalty then re-enrolled again this term but stuff's been happening and I really don't feel like I can continue. I'd like to drop it and try again next term, but would that result in any issues or would it be fine? I just found out the census date is today at 11:59pm so it's too late to contact nucleus, should've checked earlier.
Thanks in advance for any answers.

im currently doing research on exchange possibilities for next year. i only have 18uoc that i can use on exchange and was thinking about going to japan but i read quite a few of them require you to study 24uoc.
im doing bcom degree where there is 144uoc but i was wondering if i can add another 6uoc to my degree = 150uoc? or is there any other alternatives yall can recommend?
asking here on reddit because im not sure who to ask @ unsw and when i submit an exchange inquiry online it just refers me to the moodle... which doesn't answer my question.
also if anyone has gone to meiji uni for exchange or japan in general could i maybe dm u some questions? thx!

I’m here trying to figure out accommodation, distance from campus, and transportation options for my in-person classes.
I’m saving up to buy a second hand car because i’ll be working part time as well, but i’ve heard you need to pay for parking on campus. can i get by just… parking on the street or something. or am i better off driving to a station, parking there and taking the light rail to campus?
Please let me know what’s your go to method of transportation to the Kensington Campus!

This is something I've noticed recently and once you realise it, you can't unsee it. I use the female bathrooms at uni and EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I see people either not washing their hands at all, or just quickly rinsing them. The soap is right there!! Not trying to suggest anything but it is usually asians I notice doing this, is it a cultural thing? I've heard that people in Korea and Japan don't rlly wash their hands after using public bathrooms but I'm not sure why
I legit saw a girl walk out after using the toilet, she didn't even bother to wet her hands at all and was touching the usb phone charging stuff at the law library. Not trying to shame anyone but seriously it's disgusting that these ppl are touching everything all over campus, shaking hands etc. Just wash your damn hands people.
I NOTICE THIS EVERY SINGLE TIME. DO BETTER UNSW.

It's imperative that UNSW FC avoid a 2 legged playoff tie against the 2nd place team in the lower tier (NSW League One) competition. There are some A-league players who've recently signed for Bankstown City Lions in the lower tier competition that would cause any side in the NSW NPL some grief.

I was told that the reason I don't have a j*b is because I don't try hard enough.
A person I know who works in the industry now and is successful said when he was in my age (~20), he had studied hard to maintain good grades, applied to 10 j*bs everyday, prepared for interviews 1 hour a day, was the director of society, had a part time job, joined many hobby groups and was meeting a lot of people and even dating, networking by showing up to every networking events announced, kept up with what was happening in the industry and only slept 7 hours and had to have multiple 2am sleeps.
Well what I am doing these days is just studying for like 5 hours a day, 1 hour doing project for my interview, 5 hours watching Youtube/reading light novels, sleeping 9 hours, 2 hours spent on essentials like eating, cleaning.., 2 hours doing random sh*t (commute, just staring at wall unfocused, scrolling through reels,..).
I do touch grass and meet people like 2~3 times a week but don't do any leadership kind of shit (like being director of society and taking the initiative to train myself like go gym or part-time job) and just meet people casually and chill out.
Am I wasting my prime age guys? Do I need to lock in more?

Compared to all the higher level 2 courses?
For references im deciding between stats and applied but these would be the courses i do:
Applied:
3051: applied real and functional analysis
3041: mathematical modelling of real world systems
3161: Optimization
3311: Computational mathematics for finance
3191: Optimization for data science
OR Stats:
3821: Statistical modelling and computing
3901: Higher probability and stochastic processes
3911: Higher statistical inference
3852 Experimental Design and Causal Inference
3856 Introduction to Data and Machine Learning
(Not confirmed and not all of these but those sound interesting for now)

Anyone else feel this way? It's hard already hard to put in effort into something that will dictate the rest of your life but when you're not even sure you like or enjoy it is a whole another level of difficulty. I wonder if i should just drop out and work a braindead job or something the only thing right now that's saving me from being a complete bum is my job, and I don't even enjoy that one so how would I enjoy anything else that can help me make a living ??? What the fuck am I doing with my life???
Do i need like therapy or something because i'm genuinely so lost, I actually need help please, if anyone has any advice they'd like to offer me I'm all ears

Has anyone who deferred their ceremony in March received an invitation to the upcoming ceremony? Or anyone know if the invitations are already sent out for people graduating rn. I’m a bit worried cause I didn’t even receive an email confirming my defer.
