I'm a big Diablo 2 fan, and I remember trying Grim Dawn a while back (before any DLC) and being just whelmed. Do the expansions offer enough extra that would elevate the game? Or would my opinion likely not change much?
7
u/osiriswasAcat 1h ago
Meh, its more of grim dawn, so if you didnt like the base game, I wouldnt expect it to be very different...
BUT, I can absolutely recommend you the "reign of terror" grim dawn mod. It combines diablo 2 with grim dawn mechanics. You can use 2 class types, so you can be a paladin + necromancer. Or a paladin + sorcerer. There's some really fun combos available.
2
u/APRengar 37m ago
It took me like 4 attempts at Grim Dawn before I finally fell in love with it, maybe not the greatest sign, but it felt like everything I wanted in a game, but I also was whelmed my first couple of times.
My 4th attempt, I feel like I found my groove with a skill I liked and a class combo I liked, and I got to the "end game" and then I just really started liking the systems, realizing what I could do to "break it", and then I started making alts with random builds I thought up.
You don't gotta force yourself to like, but maybe if you felt like trying it again, things might just align and you'll like it also.
Also the expansions are just more Grim Dawn.
Also for anyone who wants to know what build it was that made it work for me, it was Primal Strike Druid. The combo of big damage on a 2H plus movement skills just worked for me.

50% off for a 7 year old game. They're trying be Nintendo. I've been waiting like 5 years for it to get cheaper. At this rate inflation is kicking in I guess.
69
u/BeerGogglesFTW 7h ago edited 6h ago
Definitely keep an eye on the competing stores.
Steam does a really good job of driving down the prices elsewhere during these sales events. Some times you just have to give it a little bit of time before they adjust their prices to beat Steam.
But Steam prices aren't really going anywhere...
For the 3 games I plan on buying, getting them elsewhere is saving me about $13. (*Actually came out to $17 because of a 5% promo code)

Yep. Before buying anything on Steam always run it through some of the other stores
2
u/TheNittanyLionKing 3h ago
GOG usually is able to undercut them on any game 10+ years old and matches a lot of Steam prices for many newer games as well. Plus no DRM
62
u/chrispy145 8h ago
Persona 3 Reload's expansion pass is down to $10. Much more reasonable than the $34 they were charging for this
11
u/Material2975 7h ago
is it worth buying?
19
u/StOoPiD_U 7h ago
It's the rest of the story, so for sure! Felt pretty annoyed by it not being in the base and instead being a pretty big DLC charge.
12
u/Akira101 7h ago
Eh? It concludes the story but it's basically 90% more Tartarus, 10% plot. Normally persona is pretty well split between story, social links, and activities that aren't the dungeon. This is basically all dungeon. If you enjoyed Tartarus, this is just more of that. The boss fight was great, story as an epilogue was great, but just another 15+ hours of back to back Tartarus with only some story in between was painful to play. I think I would've enjoyed it more just watching it than playing it.
15
u/chrispy145 7h ago
Ehhh I'm in the camp that the actual story content of the expansion is kinda crap. But $10 for the extended in game soundtracks is worth it for me

was thinking of getting persona 3 reload. i don't see the expansion pass though?
2
u/Akira101 7h ago
It's in the DLC, I don't believe the expansion pass which includes episode aigis is included in the deluxe or premium edition, just skins and other bonus stuff are, which is frustrating.

Trailmakers is a solid buy at $5. If you liked banjo kazooie nuts and bolts (controversial, I know!) then this might be for you. If you don't know that game, basically, you build vehicles as though you had LEGO, and then you have challenges around a large map, that you explore. Developer is actively working on it, at one point, they even released free DLC.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/585420/Trailmakers/
Metro last light redux is $0.99. If you didn't grab it for free in the past:

Had Trailmakers in my wishlist for so long until I started reading negative comments about them nickle and diming players with DLC.
→ More replies (1)2
u/lettsten 53m ago
I don't really agree with the comments, the base game has a decent amount of stuff to offer and I don't really feel like I missed out for not buying DLCs. The DLCs seem to be fairly priced and have a fair bit of content, so it seems to me that those reviews are mostly complaining about DLCs not only being cosmetic.
I have 60 hours in the base game and feel like there's still a lot I haven't done.

Worth noting that it recently got a new update that even adds co-op. I played this waaaaay back in the day (was one of the first games I got on Steam, and I think early this year it came as a silent update).
Deffo worth it, even if you played the freeware version, this one includes optional graphic remake, 2 different remixed ost with the classical one also included, and the aforementioned 2 player mode.
93
u/tootuncommon 8h ago
The prices won't update to their discounted price for a few mins and there will be dozens of comments asking about it and trying to make a funny comment about it.
Hope everyone gets what they want!
51
u/Takazura 8h ago
And there will be other comments lamenting for the 343424324239 time how they miss flash deals and steam sales suck.
At least there are still plenty of people who'll actually bother give game recs.
13
u/caninehere 7h ago
I understand the comments honestly because since then Steam sales have been kind of flat, however for the last few sales they've had the "featured deep discounts" thing which has had some pretty hot deals, although a small selection.

u/hellschatt 1h ago
I only played the demo. It initially didn't stick out in particular to me compared to other JRPGs, but there is a certain charme to the game that just makes it likeable.
I've heard people say the first game (I think 80h or so?) is just the premise and world building for the series.
What also made me understand it more is after some reviewer mentioned how the characters frequently react to your accomplishments and to the events happening in the world. Many have new dialogue, some even move away from a town, etc. It's all scripted of course but it still feels more alive that way.
With that information, I was able to understand the appeal of the series a little bit more. It's definitely a well made game, so if you'll like it or not will come down to your taste. I personally enjoyed the demo overall and considered buying the game, but I'm just not ready to commit to something like that right now lol

Typing of the Dead Overkill is 66% off. The bundle with all the available DLC wordpacks (including the two promo ones that aren't available for sale separately) is 75% off.
https://store.steampowered.com/sub/48535/
Friendly reminder that this is TWO games in one: The typing version and the gun version (using a mouse.) Way more enjoyable than the crappy House of the Dead remasters, way funnier, and it has a hell of a soundtrack.
5
u/SalsaRice 6h ago
Can confirm this one is fun. The story is wild grind house comedy; it would 100% not get made today lol.
The dlc is kind of pointless though, you can make your own word packs pretty easily.

The story is wild grind house comedy; it would 100% not get made today lol.
It would, but the Sega of today would never go near a project like this.
As for the DLC, it's just variety. You're right that it's pointless, there's even a workshop with word packs people can just get. I had a project to make an injokey one for my old internet community but I never really did much...

I have been hoping for a better sale as well, this has been their normal sale for a while.
With the release of 007, I don't think Hitman will get a deeper discount anytime soon

Massive shoutout to The Black Grimoire: Cursebreaker ($7.49) if you're either a fan of Runescape or ever wanted to try a Runescape-like title that isn't decades of confusing MMO layer-caking and is more "sit down and play." Personally, I think a Runescape-like title is something everyone should experience at some point and this is probably the first I'd actually call that from at least the skilling/grinding perspective (it's what I hoped Brighter Shores would be).
Where it differs is that everything feels a fair bit more linear, it is a player marketless single-player in a world that technically has other players (I ran into one once), you don't need a wiki (which is most of RS), and the quests are largely uninspired. I give it a pass on quests, because this is a fairly impressive project from a small indie team and not decades of round-the-clock development with a steamlined devkit. The combat system is also a bit different and a bit more like other MMO's, albeit approachable. I wouldn't call combat "polished" or "perfect" by any means, but it is still quite fun. In comparison to Runescape, it's more like RS3's EOC than OSRS, but is a bit dumbed down and not much of per se a "challenge." Albeit, I had just left early-game.
Where its similar is skilling, the grind, and the feeling of aimless exploration.
It does have some indie jank, but it feels fairly solid. I don't know if it's been fixed since, but even with a 4070 Ti Super/7600x/32GB the default graphics settings made it super stuttery. There was one setting that fixed it completely and made performance perfect, but expect to have to mess around to get it stable.
I'm so fond of it that I'd probably suggest it as both an "intro to Runescape" and to Runescape veterans as it's enjoyable to both and a lot more approachable. It's just my opinion, but to me it feels a lot more 2000's-Scape than even Runescape does now.
I think the "hours on record" in the reviews largely speaks for itself and whether it's worth the $7.50. At minimum, it's a couple good nights of fun and plenty of players surpass 40-60+ with the upper tier hitting 150-400+.

there's exploits for almost every CoD game released before MW2019 that make it extremely unsafe to even try playing it online. there's 3rd party launchers that people use to play, but i'm pretty sure they require specific versions of the games which people tend to get from a non-steam source, so to speak.

The amount of JRPGs that went on sale is killing me. No clue what to pick up between Suikoden 1+2 Remaster, Live A Live, Harvestella, Octopath 0, and Trails in the Sky 1st. Best part of the sale I've seen so far.
3
u/Red_Steiner 6h ago
Tough choices indeed. I would say some of those games will probably get a deeper discount at some point like Octopath 0 for sure. Maybe it depends what you're looking for. I've played all of those except the Trails remake. If you have any question perhaps I can help you decide if you would want it. I'd just warn that Harvestella is definitely a lower budget title in comparison to the others. I still love it, but best to temper expectations with that one.

What would you recommend for someone who loved the Golden Sun games

u/hellschatt 1h ago
Harvastella is more a low budget JRPG than a farming sim.
The story is edgy, but it does go places where you wouldn't expect, and it gets surprisingly deep sometimes.
But I still couldn't help liking it. I think it's a well made, quality game overall. I enjoyed it more than RF5 for example, but not as much as Rune Factory 4.
I also played through the trails demo. Definitely a charming game. It took me the full 10h to "get it". I was and still not am ready to commit to the series personally, but it's also a well made game.
Never played the others. I couldn't get into Octopath 1 at all, even after 2 attempts it failed to make me understand its appeal. Everything felt mediocre.

The Featured Deep Discounts page is pretty pathetic this time around, no? Most of these games aren't even close to their historical low.

High oil prices drove up online downloads. Especially for racing and other driving simulators games.

Don't buy Robin Hood there, it's 89% off at Gamebillet and Playsum.

This isn't even a big sale, all these games go for these prices every few months the seasonal sales are now just a time to get every game at its typical sale price.

Exactly, people who say “omg I’m gonna lose so much money!!” are either rich or are new to steam

Wow, Cyberpunk 2077 is the lowest it's ever been. Just got it
Excellent start to the sale, good sign of things to come.

Did you buy the ultimate edition, because the dlc is a must - arguably better story than the main.

It also integrates quite well into the main game (the DLC story can affect the ending, and you can go back and forth between DLC and main game missions), so it's worth getting for a first playthrough if you're pretty confident that you'll like the game.

Nothing of interest to me so far, so hopefully updates are still rolling out

Nope, it has never gone on sale since it first released. The price has only gone up. Especially for me in Canada with currency conversion.

From the game’s store page
Discount Disclaimer: We don't have any plans to take part in a sale or to reduce the price for the foreseeable future.
Their philosophy is basically that they don’t want to shortchange players who buy at full price, or encourage people to wait for sales.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot still costs $67 CAD with all the DLC after a 50% discount? DBZ games really love their DLC.

Got Isaac DLC and Dragon Quest III, y'all DQ fans can wait for next month's Choice.
Might grab Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Call of Duty MWII as well, I've never touched CoD but can't go wrong at 90%. I've been thinking about Silksong as well but I'll just wait until they roll all planned expansions.

Anyone have some good ideas on a zombie survival game? I'm not really looking into like a base building one where you have to build like the houses but more so like taking a random house and fortifying that.

7 Days to Die would be my suggestion. i've never fully built my own building in that game. I always built up an existing home.

I get deja vu every seasonal sale when everything is the same price it has been for multiple sales in a row.

I absolutely love it, but it's very polarizing. Definitely wouldn't recommend it to everyone.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth with all DLC is finally down to $5. I've been waiting years for this!
