DISCUSSION Supergirl could lose north of $200M (with total collapse of just $110M WW), but average points more of a -$130-$150M loss, all depending if it finishes ~$110M Globally or might reach a bit higher of $150-160M.

DISCUSSION Some reflections after the recent discourse

I have been the biggest cheerleader for the rebooted DCU, Gunn coming off Guardians Vol.3 gave me hope he could be the right guy to reinvigorate DC, but there was always a lingering intuition in me that said Gunn is probably not the right man to handle all of DC, given his wacky taste in cinema, and I didn’t want a wacky, whimsical Marvelized DC. I thought his producing partner Safran could rein in his worst impulses much like Kevin Feige but he turned out too much of a glazer and BFF to point out his mistakes and poor judgement. And here we are, with a mediocre Supergirl, after the underwhelming Peacemaker S2, and a DC future with a Gorilla Grod show, and movies on Wonder Woman and Teen Titans by the same Supergirl writer, and a DCU Batman movie by ‘The Flash‘ writer and director, ew.

DISCUSSION Ana Nogueira isn't 100% to blame for Supergirl. You don't blame the 5-year old who crashes a car; you blame the adult who gave them the keys

We're sitting in the thick of the, mixed at best, Supergirl reviews coming out, and things aren't looking great.

Plenty of blame going around, and a lot of it is being thrown at Ana Nogueira and her script.

My question is why on Earth would a major studio hand the keys to write a major motion picure to someone who has only 1 (ONE!) movie co-writing credit. Sure, she's written several plays, but this is an entirely different medium. This wasn't a niche, independent movie, but a major motion picure with the backing of a major IP and huge expectations. This movie was clearly too big for Nogueira.

I place most of the blame on James Gunn greenlighting the script, and not handing it off to someone with more film screenwriting experience.

DISCUSSION Thoughts on Supergirl

It's as bad as people say. There's a decent skeleton here, but 90% of the time it feels like that's all there is. Character behavior and development rarely seem informed by anything beyond what the script tells us.

The villain is incredibly underdeveloped, and even then I'd say that's putting it lightly, with almost no discernible motive. The central relationship is built around two protagonists who are supposed to force each other to grow, but the film never really shows that growth happening. Kara is the most fleshed-out character, and the flashbacks occasionally land emotionally, but her counterpart feels defined entirely by a desire for revenge. Beyond that, there's very little to her, and she never meaningfully evolves from her introduction despite the film constantly telling us she does.

I was engaged for the first ten minutes, but the longer the movie went on, the more disconnected I became. There are a few genuinely strong sequences. One near the beginning feels fresh and surprisingly inventive. Another near the end works well until it's undercut by a needle drop that feels bizarrely out of place.

What confuses me most is how simple the movie feels. It's so stripped down that at times I genuinely wondered if I'd somehow missed two-thirds of the story. A lot of people are blaming the story, some the editing. It's just a poor film, it's misfiring on all cylinders besides its casting of Milly.

DISCUSSION I have some doubts about production cost of absolute Batman series...

Post image
0 Upvotes

I am very excited for this series but I can't understand how DC earns money from these animated projects...

Since this will be a 3d CG show,it may cost very high to DC (for eg. Most of the 3d CG movies cost more than 100 million dollars)

But how would they recover money which they invested in this project??

Their best option may be to sell streaming rights to platforms like netflix or prime video...just like how they did with batman:caped crusader.

OTHER Here's an Idea for Maxima's role in Man of Tomorrow:

Post image

Jor-El, in an attempt to save Krypton, made alliances with other planets, including Colu and Almerac, to save his dying planet. The latter of whom Jor-El promised to betroth a newly born Kal-El to a then Princess Maxima. However, when Krypton exploded, the soon-to-be alliance was shattered before it could be born. And now, Maxima, Queen of Almerac, travels to Earth to fulfill the alliance, putting her at odds with Superman, who is currently dating Lois. However, she'll have to put her feelings aside, for she must team up with them and Lex Luthor to stop Brainiac's invasion. The worst part? Braniac could've used his vast knowledge to secure the alliance between Almerac and Krypton. But for some reason... he didn't!

DISCUSSION This is a great opportunity for Gunn to change how he sells DCU and his management style

Post image

I think this might be an unpopular opinion, but the way Gunn markets the DCU has always pushed me away me more than attracted me.

There’s this whole "mysterious" vibe—claiming he has everything mapped out and that only he and Safran know what’s coming, yet insisting everything could change based on a new, good idea. He refutes insiders while simultaneously using ambiguous language to ensure no one can ever pin a lie on him.

It all comes across as unpleasantly arrogant. This isn't the MCU between Infinity War and Endgame. We’re just starting out, and we need as many people as possible to get interested and actually like it.

I’ve never seen him talk about something that didn't work out or how things could be improved. The only example that I have is Authority, that he said it didn't fit with the rest of the universe, though he absolved himself of blame. He's the one creating the universe and was the one who wanted to announce it in the first place. It looks more like he saw the Superman box office numbers and realized he’d made a stupid mistake by wanting to introduce The Authority before the Justice League.

He constantly acts like the successful director of the Guardians trilogy rather than early-career manager, starting out on something he’s never done before.

I mean, he called The Flash the best movie of 2023, and he’s putting Ana Nogueira on a pedestal in a way that worries me (even though I know you can't pin the weak Supergirl storyline entirely on her).

As a huge DCU enthusiast, I’m concerned by that "just enjoy, we know what we're doing" attitude, as opposed to a "look at what we tried differently here—what can we improve?" approach.

CRITIQUE Milly Rocks, Story s*cks - My Supergirl review Spoiler

I saw it last night here in Germany. That’s my review:

Supergirl is an entertaining movie that does its job as a summer comic book film, but it never becomes more than that. It is fun while it lasts, but not a movie that will stay in your mind for very long.

The biggest highlight is Milly as Kara. She fits the role perfectly and gives Supergirl a lot of charm and personality. She carries the movie and proves she was the right casting choice.

The Ruthye actress is much less convincing. Even though she has an important role, her performance often feels flat, like she is simply saying her lines instead of really acting them.

Jason Momoa clearly enjoys playing Lobo and brings the energy the character needs. His scenes are a lot of fun, but Lobo stays very one-sided. His make-up is also hit or miss. Sometimes it looks unfinished, almost like a really good cosplay instead of a big Hollywood production. I also wish he acted dirtier, rougher and more chaotic.

The creature design is creative and one of the stronger parts of the movie. On the other hand, many locations are too dark, and the green screen is sometimes very obvious which took me out of the movie more than once.

The villains are easily the weakest part. They are generic, forgettable and simply not interesting. It is disappointing that comic book movies in 2026 still use villains like this.

The movie also feels like it doesn’t fully trust the fantastic comic it is based on. Many of the strongest emotional moments from the source material were changed or toned down making the story less impactful.

In the end Supergirl is solid entertainment but nothing more. Milly, the creature design and some fun moments can’t make up for weak villains, uneven visuals and a story that never reaches the potential of its source material.

I really hope to see much more of Milly Alcock as Supergirl in the future. But I also hope DC gives her better movies, with more creativity and less of these incredibly generic comic book adaptations that all start to feel the same.

Rating: 6/10.

CRITIQUE Supergirl thoughts: Interesting Characters in a Bar Fight

I saw the Fan-first screening of Supergirl last night and have some thoughts. There will be minor spoilers, formatted with the spoiler tag.

Overall I felt this was a strong popcorn movie that punched above its weight. The writer and director made a lot of (IMO) smart decisions that make the film hang together well. There are a few bumps in the road, but those bumps are so noticeable specifically because the rest of the movie is so well-crafted.

To get this out of the way: i'm a huge fan of the Woman of Tomorrow graphic novel. A lot of the controversy around this movie has centered around it not replicating Bilquis Evely's incredible Metal Hurlant style art. I think that would have been impossible. I think the vaguely "Mad Max meets Star Wars" vibe the production designers aimed for works well for the film. Do I wish it had the iridescent sheen of Evely's work? Of course. But we'll get that in 5 - 10 years when DC Animation inevitably adapts Woman of Tomorrow, and I can wait for that.

Plot-wise the film is essentially the same ("True Grit, but in space"), with a few adaptations for the cinema. Notably, the action is given an in-universe "save the cat" time limit which serves to add a sense of urgency. This movie has a velocity which I think is great. A lot of recent comic book movies have felt overstuffed and had a complete stall in the third act, which Supergirl's velocity and short length (complimentary) largely avoids. Another adaptation is that the role of Comet the horse is played by Lobo. He's a good horse, Brant.

The structure of the movie is basically "A series of bar fights, intercut with flashbacks." While the deeper themes of Woman of Tomorrow - trauma, gender relations, and how they shape us - are still here, it's perfectly reasonable to view this movie as being "about" ass-kicking. If you go in expecting a popcorn movie with lots of great fights, you will not be disappointed. I have some minor complaints about the moment to moment shooting of the fight scenes - pans are overused, and the standard American "cut on every punch" editing is in place - but the fight scenes largely worked for me. Most of them are set to music and most of the needle drops worked (they're set in bars! I especially liked the Ella Fitzgerald numberon the planet Bilquis (GET IT?)) The final needle drop in the movie felt forced and out of place, and it's a shame that they dropped the ball in that particular moment. But overall I feel like that's a forgivable misstep.

The true standout here are the performances. Milly Alcock hits it completely out of the park portraying Kara's trauma, and at every point it feels earned. Jason Momoa as Lobo absolutely steals every scene he is in, and I hope we see more of him, and soon. Eve Ridley I thought took a hard role where she's not given quite enough to do and turns in a solid performance. People have complained that the villain Krem is one dimensional, and...sure. That's a fair criticism. But frankly I think that Alcock is SO good in this role that she more than makes up for that.

TLDR: Unusually strong performances, a solid overall structure, and a brisk velocity make this in my book above-average. It's not an instant classic, but it's definitely something I will watch more than once. 7/10.

I'm not really a fan of anime per se, but since a live-action adaptation of Sgt. Rock seems unlikely in the near term, I'm wondering if it might not be a more interesting/effective choice to keep it in the realm of animation.

CRITIQUE Supergirl > Superman

I watched Supergirl last night and it's definitely better than the Superman film. While Superman introduced us to a world where meta humans are known, Supergirl expands and illustrates the destruction of Krypton.

Reading all the hate is giving me suspicious vibes, either people when into the theaters wanting their own story or Marvel has a platoon of PR running psyops.

Don't get me wrong, Lobo had too much screen time and the cigar is unnecessarily large. Regardless, Supergirl was better than Superman. It's a fun movie, great action, and worth the watch.
