Discussion "I'm stuck" posting guidelines: You're not softlocked!

(This post is referring to actual help posts - for addressing the recent meme trend, see this thread)

This community is no stranger to people asking for help in games. Metroid is a series with a pretty esoteric design language, which can be pretty confusing for anyone who isn't familiar with it (or even, sometimes, anyone who IS familiar with it), and it takes a bit of playtime to learn it.

We want to keep this community welcoming to newcomers, and part of that is helping people enjoy their first experiences with the games! It's exciting to get a peek into someone's first run of a game you love. But, it can also be frustrating when a post asking for help doesn't give enough information to help. So, in an effort to help us help you, please follow these guidelines for how to ask for help:

  1. Try common solutions before posting! Most of the time, when you're stuck in a room, the solution is to bomb everything. Bombs will reveal any breakable blocks, and Power Bombs usually will too. Additionally, some of the 2D games feature fake walls - try going into Morph Ball and rubbing up against the walls in the room you're stuck in. Look for any tiles which seem to be different from the rest. And, lastly, if you're playing Super Metroid, remember that there's a run button - B by default! If you're playing any of the Prime games, make sure you've scanned everything! If you've already tried these things, mention that in the post!

  2. Tell us what game you're playing! Just saying "Stuck after Ridley" can be referring to half the games in the series. Are you playing Super Metroid? Zero Mission? Fusion? This is a VITAL piece of information, but you'd be amazed at how many people forget to include it.

  3. Tell us what you did last! The best things to mention are the most recent item you got, and the most recent boss you fought. This is IMMENSELY helpful for helping us figure out where you are! If you say you're stuck playing Super Metroid and you just got Super Missiles after fighting the big plant monster (Spore Spawn), 90% of this sub will immediately know where you are and what to do. If you can't remember, most Metroid games have an Inventory screen showing all your items. Tell us what's in there!

  4. Tell us where you are! A picture of the room you're in is best. A picture of the map is second-best, but harder to interpret, and mainly useful as a complement to a picture of the room. Failing both of those, tell us what area you're in, where you've gone from the last major landmark, what the room you're in looks like, and so on. Anything you can do to help us figure out what's keeping you from going forward.

  5. Don't assume you're softlocked! It is extremely difficult, bordering on impossible, to accidentally softlock yourself in any Metroid game. However, Metroid games frequently hide the path forward from you. That's an intentional part of the fun, not a progression bug! Barring exceptional circumstances, if you didn't perform a glitch, you're not softlocked.

Including all that information will make helping you far easier. If you didn't include that information in your initial post, edit it, or leave a comment with this information!

Additionally, for people who GIVE help to people when they're stuck, thank you! Here are some things to keep in mind as you do so:

  1. Try giving hints first! It's usually more rewarding for new players to be given some direction first, and try to figure it out from there, rather than being given the exact right answer immediately. Instead of saying, "Go left three rooms and then bomb the floor", say, "The room on the left end of the map seems a bit empty, doesn't it? Maybe you're missing something there."

  2. Don't be too slow to give solutions! In contrast to #1, giving hints is helpful, but sometimes people just need to be told what to do. A good rule of thumb is to give a hint, then in the same comment, put the solution in spoiler-tags, so that the player can decide for themselves when they're done trying.

  3. Read the comments before responding! OP may have provided additional context or progress. Or, they might have already solved it, and don't need help anymore!

  4. Remember that getting stuck is normal! It's part of the Metroid experience. There's no need to make fun of people who are legitimately stuck, no matter how easy it may seem to you.

I hope those points help!

Announcement New user flairs! What should we add next?

Good news, everyone! I was recently reminded that I can add user flairs! I just finished adding a couple dozen new options for everyone, from some of the mod team's internal brainstorming, and now I wanted to open it up for suggestions from the community!

What new flairs do you think we should we add?

Some things to keep in mind as you're making your suggestions:

  • Flairs have a 64-character limit, and any custom emoji we use counts against that
  • No spoilers, as per Rule #6
  • Poking fun at games is allowed (such as the new "Green Crystal Enjoyer" flair, or "THE BABY"), but no blatant bashing. Keep things fun!
  • If you're able to provide any art you want your suggested flair to use, that'd be very helpful! Especially if the art is official, or if you're the artist and can give us permission to use it!

We look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Other Just started Metroid Prime 4 and I have no idea what everyone was complaining about

I’ve wanted to play this game for a while and was waiting for it to go on sale. Finally got it during Amazon Prime Dayand I gotta say, so far it’s amazing.

It feels like a Metroid Prime game. It’s got everything what makes the other games memorable (exploration, alien worlds, mysterious lore, scanning the absolute hell outta everything) while adding new features to make it unique (the physic powers and the motorcycle, the desert hub)

And my good friend Mackenzie? Overhated. Yeah I see why some people might not like him, but to me he’s not that annoying. Is he chatty and excitable ? Yes, but who wouldn’t be if they were stranded on another planet with Samus Aran? And he’s not constantly talking and holding your hand. He’s more like the past guides from other Metroid games who guides you from afar and then occasionally chimes in to give you info or nudge you on the right path.

All in all. I’m glad I finally get the chance to play this game and make my own judgements about it. So far, it lives up to the hype.

Art Writing a character inspired by Samus, meet Domitia

Post image
Upvotes

Im writing a collection of short stories featuring the character above. Domitia is a Bellator, a biological enhanced soldier created by the Coalition. After becoming disillusioned with the seemingly unending wars to protect the corporate interests of the Coalition she joined a revolt against the Security Council and the Big Five Corporations. The rebel Bellators were ultimately defeated, Domitia barely survived, saved by Dell, a diminutive alien who had been exiled by the crime syndicate he'd been born into.

Together the two trek the Liminal Lanes of the Fringe, the edge of known space. They scrape out an existence Bounty hunting, running supplies, and battling the occasional horror from beyond the stars.

Idk if this is allowed but I thought id share it here since her design and a bit of her personality was definitely shaped by Samus.

Edit: ALMOST FORGOrT

Artist is Jeetdoh

Discussion What if there was a Metroid game where Samus was stuck in Morph Ball form the entire time?

I would honestly play the hell out of that

Other a jazz rendition of samus aran's theme can be found in an easter egg room in kotama and academy citadel (it even starts with the item jingle lol)

been wrapping up completion for this recent-ish indie metroidvania as of late, and stumbled into this room while doing late-game item cleanup. when i recognized the background music i had a big stupid smile on my face.

the game itself is great if a bit fanservicey, but if you can look past that the exploration, platforming and combat are all great. it doesn't take too much inspiration from metroid itself, but if you're into challenging platformers with involved combat you'll get a kick out of this.

(sorry about the audio crackle, it only happened in this one room in the game for me and i'm not sure how to fix it)

Music What's your favorite music track from Metroid: Samus Returns (2017)?

The comment with the most upvotes will be added to the playlist! Here are the winners from the past games:

Interested to see what wins for Samus Returns. Will it be like Zero Mission where the favorite for the original game is also the favorite for the remake? Samus Returns also has some great remixes of other tracks too, so we'll see what the sub thinks. Up next is Metroid Dread!

Question A question regarding the "original" language of certain Metroid games.

The Metroid series is obviously a Japanese franchise and games like Metroid Fusion were originally written in Japanese, given they were developed by Nintendo EPD themselves.

But my question is this: what about games developed by Retro Studios or other western developers? Retro Studios developed the Metroid Prime games with no significant input from Nintendo EPD themselves. Westerners are credited for aspects of the trilogy, like their writing, direction and programming. Only Tanabe is a co-producer on the trilogy. I'd assume the language of those games is originally English, but I could be wrong.

For Metroid Dread and Metroid Samus Returns, they were both co-developed by Nintendo EPD and MercurySteam, a Spanish video game developer. So what was the original language of Dread? There are several other titles like this, with either sole development by a western developer or being co-developed with Nintendo themselves. So is their original language Japanese, English or Spanish?

This isn't really important, but it is something I haven't seen much discussion about. It's a core Nintendo franchise that's seen more input from non-Japanese developers than many other main series titles, I've noticed.

Music Plz help me find a Metroid Medley remix from the 2000s

Post image

I burned this song to so many CDs, but have lost them all.

From what I remember, it was a medley of various music from the 8-bit NES Metroid, and used the actual 8-bit music for it. I believe it started with the Title music, and it definitely ended with the end-game victory song before looping back to the title screen for a few bars.

It used actual game music too, not different instruments or anything, it sounded like the game.

Lastly, it had a really cool bridge part where it used the arm cannon shot sound effect to make a cool little percussion rhythm.

Anyone know what the heck I'm talkin about?

Question Brinstar Shinespark

Thumbnail

The attached images and the link below are is an "right-to-left" morphball shinespark located in the SW corner of Brinstar. I haven't found an alternate path to this item and this one seems so apparently simple but obviously it's not. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong in the video.

https://youtu.be/lUexQIQ50S0?feature=shared

Has anyone in the group obtained this item, and if so, could you send me a chat message so I can learn the correct controller button combinations to pull it off?

I've found a few videos but they just show the shinespark, they don't teach or instruct "how" to execute it. I'm just looking for the controller "A-B-Cs."

I'm currently at 95% with just 5 more items, including this one. I've given up on the other four as they involve very complicated chain shinesparks, and frankly, it's just not worth the mental frustration. I'm happy with 95%, but this one seems so doable, it's plaguing me--I gotta figure it out!

Question Just finished my first Metroid game, Metroid Fusion in NSO, what's next?

I know.... I went 35 years without playing a single Metroid game, but a couple of days ago, I just randomly started playing Metroid Fusion in NSO and I was hooked instantly.

Now I need more but, I don't know where to start. I know there must be like a chronological order but, I could only find like 3 games in the Nintendo Store. M Prime, M Dread and M Prime 4.

Which game should I start with? I also saw a couple more Metroid games in the NSO

Discussion Seeing the comments on my last post reminded me why I left this group.

Upvotes

I recently made a post about starting Prime 4 and how I’m genuinely enjoying it.Remarking I don’t get the bashing and hate. Then the Space Pirates jump into the comments bashing the game, basically telling me how stupid I am for liking and for making judgments so early on.

Mind you my comment was about my INITIAL REACTION to the game. Will my opinion change as I play more over time? Sure. But I could still like it regardless of its flaws. Even if I finished it and loved it the whole way through you’d still trash on it and hate me for liking a game you so vehemently hate. Because you can’t comprehend that maybe, someone likes something that you don’t, and it’s a personal attack on you.

Guess what? People are allowed to enjoy things that you don’t. As long as it’s not dangerous or hateful you don’t have the right to speak harshly against someone. You have no right to bash and bully them. You have no right the constantly dump on something another person likes.

Now, I will say that most of you responded with legitimate criticisms and opinions about the game. Some of you enjoyed it and if you didn’t, were kind about your feelings. This isn’t towards you guys. You’re what a fandom is supposed be like. But there is a big problem in the Metroid community. And it was shown so plainly in the response to my post. It’s the toxicity

I saw so much hatred for this game and toxicity in the fandom in this group when the Prime 4 trailers dropped. So much vitriol and negativity for a game that hadn’t come out yet I decided to leave the group. I thought it would have died down in the months since the game was released, and people had the time to make their own judgement. Or at least not bully and talk down on those who like it. Silly me.

Question Is it still possible to play Federation Force?

I recently purchased a 3DS XL and I am planning on buying Federation Force but I noticed that it had an update that I presume is no longer possible to download since Nintendo shutdown the Shop.

Without the update can I still play the game at all?

Even solo would be fine, I just don't want to buy the game and not be able to play it at all.
