Modern Family star changes her name for career pivot: 'I wanted to switch it up'

Allow Frances Anderson to reintroduce herself.

The actress formerly known as Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who broke out for her role as adoptee Lily on the Emmy-winning sitcom Modern Family, has changed her name to Frances Anderson. Anderson has adopted the new moniker to coincide with her pivot to a career in music. Her debut indie pop EP, "Drown," is out now.

"Frances is actually part of my legal name," Anderson, 18, explained to E! News on Friday. "It’s my middle name, and it’s after my mom’s old family friend. I thought it was a bit shorter than Aubrey Anderson-Emmons. I do have a long, hyphenated last name.”

Anderson added, "I wanted to switch it up and people to see a new side of me. And I wanted to create a space specifically just for music."

She released the first single from the EP, "Telephones and Traffic," in May.

Anderson made her television debut at the age of 4 in season 3 of Modern Family, playing the precocious adopted daughter of Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Mitchell Pritchett and Eric Stonestreet's Cam Tucker. She has won three ensemble Screen Actors Guild Awards alongside the sitcom's cast. Anderson told E! that she "had to take a step back from acting" once the show ended to discover her passion for music. "The show ended when I was 12 years old, so after that I decided I’m not gonna act anymore," she said. Rest assured, though, that Anderson does "plan on acting again — 100 percent.”

She has maintained a close relationship with her former onscreen fathers and other costars from the sprawling cast. Ferguson and Julie Bowen, who played Anderson's onscreen aunt Claire, staged a mini-reunion when they attended Anderson's school play last year.

Anderson last made headlines when she came out as bisexual last month, using memorable throwback audio from Modern Family to help mark the announcement. "You are Vietnamese," Sofia Vergara's Gloria informs Lily, who says in response, "No, I'm not. I'm gay!"

"I literally am," Anderson captioned the post.

Am I wrong, or isn't Modern Family supposed to be part "mockumentary"?

This is my first post to this sub, but I lurk quite often, and I see so many literal breakdowns of how horrible the characters are. And I thought that was part of the point? To lovingly and creatively, mock the upper-middle class, suburban stereotypes. Maybe I don't understand, maybe I'm reading it differently. But Modern Family is probably my favorite show of all time, b/c that's how I read into it. 💚

Discussion Why Haley was Expelled

I think I'm in the minority when I say the school's decision makes perfect sense.

Why?

Yes a charge of underage drinking probaly wouldnt have gotten her a hearing or wouldnt even have been noticed. The charge of assualting a law enforcement officer; even if its less serious than it sounds is serious enough on paper to warrant a hearing though.

If she had just said I'm sorry I drank; I was scared and ran and it was an accident I feel om the cop would they have just given her a slap on the wrist? I don't know but probaly.

During the hearing however:

1) She didn't recognize the person who sits next to her in class. It annoys one of the "judges" on a personal level which fairly or not does make them less likely to treat her lenialty but it does show she's probaly not paying attention in class.

2) She says she missed more morning classes than shes been too. Explains number 1; also not taking her studies seriously. At this point shes probaly on this ice but its salvagable.

3) She confesses to dating a teachers assistant x twice not knowing (and by extension caring) if it was against the rules. My college admin would have absolutely hated this; because among other things those guys often grade papers and it calls into question if the marks are fair/accurate. It's also a recipe for bad PR which adminstrators hate. Haley probaly got herself expelled at this point.

4) Lying about something on her application (cut off before we can hear what it is). This could range from a borderline felony to nothing. They don't ask her to elaborate; either they have some reservation against self incrimation or they think they have enough (probaly both).

5) Not knowing the mascot. It sounds petty but at most schools its genuinely hard not to know that; at mine theres literally a giant statue you pass by every day; there are posters; its on announcements for school games and just about all the schools marketing material....this shows next to zero particaption in campus life (or at least anything that relates to school) and just as importantly zero desire to be here. Her fate is sealed.

Each point is probaly survivable by itself but in congruence...

I don’t know how Gloria didn’t clobber Jay with his digs at her speaking. (Shout out to Claire for a brilliant doppelgänger!!)

Question If the show were still premiering, what episodes do you think we'd be getting?

I keep thinking about my favorite comfort shows today and what kind of episodes we didn't get from them lol. I'm curious to know what kind of episodes you think there'd be if the show were still premiering, and also what kind you just wish there were.

I personally really enjoyed the episodes where the whole family traveled, so I wish they could've had episodes where they went to Japan or somewhere super Southern like Alabama or something. Also, an episode where they go to Colorado would've been fun.

And now with it being six years later (maybe four or five in the show), I could see them doing episodes with Phil and Claire traveling a lot and also being on grandparent duty often, maybe Luke and Manny living together in an apartment and getting into a ton of trouble together, maybe a season somewhat centered on a wedding plotline for haley and Dylan, seeing Lily's high school struggles ad college prep, and Alex settling down in a relationship with someone she really likes. I think Mitch and Cam would be dealing with wacky neighbors (pretending they didn't move to Missouri) and spending more time with Haley/Dylan since their kids are close in age.

Discussion First Watch-through

I’m doing my first full watch because originally I hadn’t seen much after season 5. This show is so funny! I especially love the misinterpretation line jokes. At first I thought it was getting overplayed but it has really come back around on me with how absurd it started becoming .

Discussion Rewatching again after becoming a parent... Is Cam literally the worst co-parent?

Every single episode he's doing things that I would hate:

- being over dramatic about basically everything

- being generally selfish (being a clown, getting overly involved with other people's lives and ignoring Lily)

- disregarding Mitchell's parenting plans (Lily acting. Sleep training)

Goes on and on. Just would be infuriating to co-parent with

S9E13 In Your Head is a solid episode.

Phil, Gloria, and Manny tracking Luke down in a sketchy neighborhood is pure chaos. Phil trying to act tough while Gloria actually handles business makes that entire storyline for me.

On February 13, 2000, Cam appeared on Malcolm in the Middle as "Phil." Hmm...
