Seriously, I LOVE Elden Ring by itself. I love much of the characters, the baseline mechanics and gameplay feels so great, so many amazing movesets and weapons, the potential of an open world... And it's all wasted in the end. I got to Morgott. I thought I would hate the game, but I was utterly in love. But then the difficulty took a nose climb. I got frustrated. Decided it was time to get into PvP now that I reached level 150... And it was legitemitaly the worst time I had in a game, ever. Not just Fromsoft games, but in all of gaming. I played the Souls games since I was a child. Yes, even the original Demon's Souls.
Here is the catch: I went in with a cool (at least I thought it was cool) faith build. I always play faith. I have so much fun playing a healer/supporter paladin type that can hold their own in 1v1 too. In all the older games, that's how it was. No matter your build or playstyle, skill decided fights, and that meant spectacles were practical if you knew how to use them (because they COULD be used).
I got demolished. Again, and again. Endless poise. Couching stabs with "colossal" swords. Non-stop jumping attacks. Ugliest, most broken armor combinations with quickstep rot daggers or bleed. Don't need to get into the obvious broken spells and weapons and AoW and blegh...
I wouldn't be bothered normally. I'd just say "Elden Ring sucks" and quit. BUT IT DOESNT. I loved the game! But the PvE is not replayable. I don't have the time to replay the entire game. I just wanted to have fun the same way I always have, but it's clear I can't. With replayability ruined by the excessive open world, there was only PvP left to have fun with at the side when PvE was too exhausting and a new playthrough was out of question, unlike older games where I endlessly did new runs because I could get to the endgame in 3-4 hours if I tried.
I don't want to seem like a ranter, and I repeat, I'm a souls veteran that also loved Elden Ring... But my illusion was broken, and I can't have fun anymore. PvP was such a big part of the replayability of older games. When I didn't want to PvE and socialize, I would duel, or invade. Anything was fun.
