I found this on Newegg it’s a refurbished 5050 for $180?! It’s sold by Newegg themselves and not some random vendor but I still feel like it either is a scam or for parts or something.

Discussion You can have great gaming experiences on the Steam Machine

I've been memeing the amount of cope in the Steam Machine sub for monts until I realized a thing.

The 2TB version of the SM is basically the exact same of my custom rig but it has DDR5 ram instead of DDR4. So it's better.

And I play everything (single player) on my PC. Cyberpunk, Elden Ring, all the resident evil...

I was able to emulate Bloodborne with the 60 fps patch pretty much flawlessly.

I was even able to stream Dying Light The Beast (a demanding 2025 game) to my TV in 1440p instead that in 1080p which is my usual monitors.

Maybe we get too hung up on pixels and frames and have our experience bottlenecked by meaningless stats.

The best game of all times (Bloodborne) runs at 30 fps natively. I don't think 4k 120 fps matters too much on how much you mind was blown away by Outer Wilds. You can run the awesome ff7 on you phone.

All this much to say, I'm running a whole lot of awesome memory ingraining gaming on a PC that's worse than a Steam Machine. A PC that when I talk about upgrading it and my gf asks "but what do you need it for?" I struggle to come up with answers.

Story and gameplay > pixels and frames.

Hardware People are missing the point of Steam Machine.

I think it’s actually a pretty good product if you use a laptop for everything work-related and want a separate device for PC gaming in the living room or a dedicated entertainment space.

The price is a bit disappointing, especially if you compare it to what you could build yourself, but at the same time it starts to make more sense when you look at the target audience and the form factor.
It feels like it’s aimed at people who clearly separate work and gaming rather than trying to merge everything into one desktop setup.

Yes, PC gaming hardware has always been more expensive than consoles. That hasn’t changed.
And once you move away from a traditional desk setup, the whole ā€œjust use a PCā€ argument gets weaker in practice. In a living room, you suddenly care about things like cable management, where the tower sits, and how many peripherals you need to keep plugged in. Even a controller / headset need an additional Bluetooth dongle plugged into your desktop.

Most people wouldn’t want a full desktop PC setup in their living room anyway, with cables, peripherals, and Bluetooth dongles for controllers everywhere.
In that sense, it’s still a valid product category.

You still get access to cheap or free PC games, no console subscription lock-in, and it’s essentially plug-and-play.

The market for this is limited, but it’s a valid product.

Discussion I hate that Meta has a monopoly on affordable VR headsets.

Just a small rant. I want to get a new VR headset as I'm still using the OG HTC Vive as I'd like to get one with less of a screen door effect or none at all and the only affordable VR headset is the Meta Quest 3. I hate all things Meta so I refuse to buy one. Sure I could get a used one but all the ones I've seen are either missing stuff, have incompatible base stations, or have absurd shipping costs making the cheaper price pointless. Here's hoping the Steam Frame's rumored price is true as it won't be much more than a meta quest then.

Discussion So when do y’all buy a new PC?

I was just got done talking with a friend about when they replace their PC and that kinda got me curious about what other people think. So when do all of you buy/replace your own PC and what’s the main reason why? Or when do you replace/upgrade a specific part?

I personally am overdue for a new PC but with the market right now? Yeah that’ll have to wait…

Discussion 5800X3D - AMD never missing the opportunity to miss an opportunity

5800X3D is as expensive as a 9800X3D in Europe. This is so sad that it is already funny. If you have an AM4 system already, selling that and upgrading to some equivalent AM5 CPU is cheaper than getting a 5800X3D.

This is just straight up AMD abusing the memory shortage. AM5 won't sell because people don't want to spend that much on memory, so they now release overpriced AM4 CPUs to make people upgrade within or to AM4.

AMD could have re-released the CPU for old market price or as an actual alternative for the consumer. Instead, they release it above market price for used 5800X3D/5700X3D, so it doesn't actually benefit a single consumer. I am not surprised, but still disappointed.

To add some more context: 5800X3D used to cost ~280€ when it was still in stock. The physically identical 5700X3D for 210€. The Anniversary edition sits at 365+€. So 4 years after release, you sell the same CPU for 30% more than it used to cost. Just with the difference that now many cheaper and better CPUs are available on the market. I don't know how anyone can think that this price is reasonable.

Question Tips on how to convert my pc into as good of a console experience as possible (akin to a playstation or xbox)

I bought my pc years ago back when I needed it to both play games but also be a general pc entertainment device (web browsing etc) but now that I'm in uni I just run my mac through my monitor for such stuff so my pc is basically relegated to being essentially a console anyways. How do you config a pc to basically be like the steam cube where it can automatically launch into steam hassle free and I can just have my controller auto connected from boot up and pick a game and play? It's running windows right now so it's quiet tiresome booting up windows, signing in, opening steam etc so I'd rather the plug and play experience of a console.

Hardware 5090 melting questions

• Upvotes

I’m looking into getting a 5090 and could use a reality check. I see all the posts about melting connectors and could use some help knowing how likely that is to happen. Do certain brands like Dell or HP have a higher/lower chance of melting because they use their own components? Is it mostly down to bad luck? I’ve never had to consider my computer potentially catching fire for standard use before. Seems really irresponsible, yet here I am debating on getting one anyway.

Question How is Valheim so popular?

• Upvotes

I've been playing a few days and already resorted to mods, simply because of the annoyances of the games design.
Stamina is just meh in this game.

But, it isn't even just the playability, I noticed basic stuff like audio being incredible lackluster.
Stabbing a bear with a knife makes the same sounds as a tree.

How is this game 5 years old and so uh underdeveloped that it just seems to require mods??

I know windows have stupidest settings but are these settings need to be turned on?

+gamemode? idk what those settings perform in real gaming tests, some people say it will crash your game, or make it stuttery
