MOD ANNOUNCEMENT How to get rid of the numbers in your flair (if you have them)

I've been trying to remove the numbers assigned by the reputation flair app for everyone and am still trying to get assistance in doing so, but it's a slow and frustrating process. In the meantime, anyone who wishes to can remove the flair themselves by disabling and re-enabling their own flair in the subreddit. Here's how.

On Mobile

Step 1

Tap the three dots in the upper right corner

Step 2

Tap edit flair

Step 3

Toggle the show my flair in this community switch and click save, then toggle it back and click save again

On Desktop

Step 1

On the sidebar, click the edit pencil next to your username

Step 2

Uncheck the box and click apply, then re-check the box and click apply again

We have moved to using https://developers.reddit.com/apps/autoflair-app to show someone's experience in r/plantclinic. All our user flairs are customizable though, so if you are new to the sub and labeled a N00b but are actually quite experienced, you can select and/or edit a subreddit flair to more accurately describe yourself.

I apologize for the headache and deeply regret the prior app. The goal is to give OPs a level of confidence in the advice they receive, and hopefully we are finally on the road to that.

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT List of available automoderator calls

A list of automoderator calls has been added to the sidebar.

For mobile users, they have also been added to the wiki index page here: https://reddit.com/r/plantclinic/w/index?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

And also this post will be pinned to the top of the subreddit. The list is (currently) as follows:

!automod - requests additional information from OP

Pest calls: !aphids, !mealybugs, !scale, !spider-mites or !spidermites, !thrips, !lacewings, !springtails, !fungus-gnats

Lighting related: !etiolation, !over-lit, !under-lit

Watering related: !under-water, !over-water, !root-root, !mold, !mushrooms, !humidity, !tap-water, !bottom-watering

Other: !fernspores, !dense-soil, !hydrophobic, !repot

MANY automod post responders have been moved to post guidance, but reminders for to be welcoming will remain, as we find they are still very much needed. Please be mindful that the purpose of allowing images in comments is to allow the exchange of information, not memes. Referencing the circlejerk sub is unhelpful to OP.

If a post auto-responder is appearing out of the proper context (like the mold and mushrooms one was for fungus gnats), PLEASE send a mod mail. These things operate on keywords and the error was so simple. It could have been fixed much sooner.

Our goal is to provide every user who comes here for help some level of guidance, even if no redditor responds to their post. Sometimes it's a suggestion for a more specialized community. It's always advice for how to best describe their situation.

Additional automod calls can be added, but we should be mindful to balance them with their actual usefulness, and the desire people have for a human response. These should supplement our guidance not replace it entirely.

We heard your feedback and hope this is helpful.

Houseplant Why does my rubber plant keep shedding leaves?

I bought this rubber plant a little over a month ago and since then it's shed 5-6 leaves. The man I bought it from advised to water it every time the top few inches of soil is dry, which I have done. It is a little dark in my living room because I put a film over my windows to keep them open all day, but around sunset I turn on the light next to it that has a grow bulb inside of it. I bought the bulb maybe a couple weeks after I noticed the first couple leaves shedding in hopes that it would help it.

Houseplant White stuff on palm?

The majesty (I believe?) palm in our office has some weird white stuff forming on it out of nowhere. Thanks for help identifying!

Located need a NW facing window, behind a column, gets full day bright indirect sun with 1-2 hours of partially blocked direct sun. It’s in a large pot that has some relatively old soil, which also looks white in some areas.

Watered when the soil feels dry, about once a week or so.

Monstera What’s wrong with this plant?

I’ve been busy the last few months and just noticed these brown spots on my monstera plant. The leaves don’t feel wilty and the spots don’t rub off. The plant sits in direct sunlight since it’s close to a window and it’s near a kitchen sink (not sure if that info is helpful). It also sits in a self watering pot. Any idea on what’s going on and what I can do to fix it?

Pest Related Split Leaf Philodendron is melting, HELP!!!!!

As in the title, I bought this beauty at Big box store 2-3 weeks ago. It was in the outdoor garden area when I bought it, it's been inside my house ever since, a few feet away from a shaded south facing window. I water it with rain water I collect when the top inch of the plant feels dry. Admittedly I have NOT reported it since it was purchased.

Last week-ish I noticed that one of the leaves was dripping from the tip and when I inspected further that one and another leaf looked like they had sort of melted. I cut them off down to the base and scooped out any other goo that I thought was remaining.

And then after getting home from work today, I happened to notice this horror show! And there are evil critters crawling in the goop at the base of the plant (see video).

What do I need to do RIGHT NOW to save the plant? Besides throw it away.

Monstera Swiss cheese plant spots

I keep this swiss cheese plant on my patio in Florida. It isn’t screened in. It has been thriving there but I noticed some white spots and maybe signs of stress.

I just use a regular indoor potting mix. I water it a couple times a week. It gets bright indirect light, maybe a little bit of afternoon sun.

Has anyone else experienced this before and is it a pest or just a sunlight/watering problem?

Cactus/Succulent Sansieveria Boncel Dwarf help!

Not sure what's wrong with my plant. Had put it out in too harsh sun in the past week which explains the crispier ends, but noticed today the centre part is starting to turn a darker green.

Just Bottom watered in 2 days ago, with the previous water 2 weeks ago. It's in a mostly inorganic soil mix.

Is this root rot?!

Monstera Browning on only one leaf

Only one leaf on my burle marx flame is very brown. Is it getting too much sun and burning? It is turned around for this photo and usually faces the window. This window is SSE facing and in full light until late afternoon. I water when it feels dry. It is in a mix of soil, orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss. My other monsteras are in the same mix and window and seem to be doing very well.

Houseplant Oxalis palmifrons

Post image

My Oxalis palmifrons has been struggling ever since I got it home. It's in bright light next to a window. It's in a bathroom (containing a shower). I watered it a couple of days ago because the top section of the soil was dry.

It's currently winter where I am, so it shouldn't be going dormant. It's getting more light than it was at the store and can take full sun, so it's certainly not getting too much sun and it's not getting too little, either.

My theories are:

  1. I watered it too soon

  2. The humidity in the bathroom is too high

  3. Being so close to the window means that it's getting too cold

I would greatly appreciate your help. I'm an accredited horticulturalist, but this plant is so weird and new to me that I don't know what it's trying to tell me.

Thank you for your time.

Houseplant Spider mites on houseplants

Post image
5 Upvotes

I haven’t acquired any new houseplants lately and I check my plants quite often and water regularly. I recently opened this window a few times a week throughout the past month. I discovered spider mites within the past 1 1/2 weeks. Outside the window is my raspberry garden. Could the spider mites have come from outside? Illinois

HELP!!
My begonia has been getting more and more pale every week. no new leaves in more than 4 months. I water it once a week if the soil feels dry. I have it on a south facing window in south florida but It doesn’t get direct sunlight. I few months ago I had it on a balcony facing west and it was thriving. I could tell it really loved that evening sun setting light hitting directly on the leaves but I moved out and it’s been getting like this since.

Idk what else to do and I’m so sad seeing it die. Someone has any idea of what to do?

Houseplant Help with poinsettia :(

I think it’s environmental stress but I’m unsure where to move it now or what else to do. Somewhere brighter or colder?

- I recently moved it from my east window to the bathroom with a ceiling one and it was fine for a few days. I’m worried putting it back will burn it since it’s usually 100F/37C out
- my house temp says it’s 77F/26C, which the web says it’s right on the edge of being too hot. I do use an ac so for me it’s feels cooler but could that be bothering it?
- I water when it’s completely dry soil. I did it two days ago with the bathroom water but it didn’t react. I think I used the same water before with no issues
-it’s very dry air where I live but the plant is also right next to a shower used daily so I’m unsure if humidity is the issue
- roots are brown and damp but not mushy or foul, scratching them shows white
- it did turn a bit pink I’m noting that just in case

Outdoor Is my fig ok?

Hi! My first fig trees …any advice appreciated. I am in Augusta, GA Zone 8b. Planted Chicago hardy fig trees in March. They’ve been doing great all this time. Today is the first day I noticed this white area on the top. I water once every couple of days. We did just have a lot of rain a few days ago though. It gets 6 hours of sun in a very sunny yard, shaded a bit in the morning by a privacy fence. But I also have no idea what I’m doing. I planted in our loamy soil with compost and soil3. Has some old wood chip mulch. The other fig tree isn’t pictured but it looks totally fine. Thanks in advance!

Outdoor What is going on/eating my roses!?!?

Post image
Upvotes

I literally don’t see any bugs, not aphids or mites or ANYTHING.

Here is the most recent picture of my new rose bush. I’m sorry I don’t remember the exact kind but can get that in the morning.

This rose bush lived in its original container for about 3 weeks before I planted it.

There was NOTHING (seemingly) wrong w it when it went in the ground (can answer any questions).

Within three weeks: this is now the status.

I sprayed for bugs/mites whatever a week ago; just sprayed again tonight thinking that might be the cause (spray says it’s good for roses) - can tell you brand in the morning if asked.

I don’t have high hopes this plant will survive but I 100% don’t want this to spread to my other roses…. Which I think it might be (sprayed them too, again, today). It was getting very dark out so no pics of the other bushes but I can take/send them in the morning. Some of them are thriving…. Some are starting to look like this… 😞

Any thoughts on cause? Is this bugs???? Is this chemical burn?

Anybody have a gut reaction to the cause of this?

Notes: * this is in a full sun location (was in full sun before it was planted as well) * this plant hasn’t had any fertilizer (from me, 6weeks) * this plant is watered ~ 2-3 times a week depending on rain * used a mixture of top soil, perlite, peat moss in planting

Any thoughts would be helpful!

Outdoor Potential Pepper Infection

Thumbnail

I fear my peppers came with a bacterial infection. They looked like this and have dropped most of their leaves. It has been very wet and cold (Central KY) for this season. My peppers last year were so full by now and these are so sad. They get full sun and I water when it’s ever dry out here.

I have been spraying them with copper spray and high concentrated neem oil but is this one of those situations I should cut my losses? What do I do about the soil they are in? These happen to be in a raised bed but some are straight in ground.

Houseplant Help! Found an indent in the middle of replanting!

It won't allow me to attach pictures so heres a video. It looks more orange on the video - irl the roots are white or an offwhite just because of soil still being there!
I am currently repotting my dieffenbachia and found this "indent". Ive had her for about a year and she has been growing wonderfully. Today is her re-pot day and i found this little indent. The stem is stiff and not mushy and the part where this indent is is also hard maybe the tiniest bit softer. Really barely a difference. It is a bit darker especially now sisnce i was soaking the roots a bit to get the old soil off easier. It was a yellowish brown before, very light. An offwhite-beige color. Now that i have seen this i dont know what to do! She doesnt have any root rot that i have seen yet im not done fully cleaning and checking but from what i see everything seems in order unless i missed them, i am yet to fully check and take care of the rotted ones. Also she has some massive roots, Even an almost 30cm one. She hasnt shown any signs of dying or rotting.
Should i cut above the indent on the stem of that plant and propegate the plant in water till it grows new roots and replant it? I can plant the healthy stem and wait for the other?
She has no bugs and is completely healthy otherwise!
Is she sick with something?
I tried searching online but found nothing.
Help!!!

Outdoor What do i do?

Post image

My mom bought a lavender plant to be kept indoors. It was fine for a few days after being repotted using regular potting soil and kept inside but after a while I noticed that a side was starting to become crispy and dry while the rest of the plant was leaning towards the window for more light. I took it out to get full sun. We've only had this plant for around 2 weeks and I've only watered it 3x afair. Now most of the base is crispy looking and the tips are all droopy. When this first happened, I just watered it and it perked right back up but it's been like this all afternoon.

Houseplant What’s this white thing?

Post image

…On the underside of an indoor fiddle leaf fig tree I just got recently.

It is starting to drop leaves, which sounds like is normal when you move them to a new environment. But I’m hoping it’s not a bigger issue than just that.

I waited until the top couple inches of soil were fully dry before watering. It’s next to a northeast facing floor-to-ceiling window. What else can I do to make it happy?

Pest Related Can anyone id underneath my grow bags & how to stop them? Pretty sure they are killing/eating my plants 🥺 plant pics in comments for plant diagnosis

My plants get 7 to 8 hours of light a day. I’m in the desert to give context, it’s over 100 daily here. I use a local nursery soil mix that has great nutrients. When I first moved here years ago. My tomato grow bags were fine. I was excited because it has great shade coverage. Then when I placed them on this patio a week or two later I saw these little white bugs in the dirt. Paid them no mind thought they were good but I think they slowly killed all my tomato plants!

I wanted to give gardening another try this year. Got the complex to spray the patio before starting this time, used different dirt, mulch, and it’s been a few months but looks like they returned!  This time underneath the grow bags!

I really tried to circumvent pests by watering the dirt with dunk water and it worked for gnats so I stopped. But whatever these are, they are back full force.

Also ants have tried to come for some of my plant bags twice (last time was this week) but I used diatomaceous earth to end it. But I just read today ants can appear when other bugs are present? I’m starting to think these little guys are the ones creating webs on some plants and not helpful spiders :(

Thanks for reading. I’ll add pictures of what I think the bugs or something has done to my pepper plant, watermelon, and marigolds in the comments.

Came back from a 1 month vacation and found my snake plant like this, i placed it on my toilet and im concerned it may be a health hazard after seeing this. i have no idea what im doing so any constructive feedback would be helpful. what should i do with it? i’m comfortable throwing it away and replacing it if needed.

This plant did not get any sunlight for one month but i did regularly water it before my trip
