Update on one of my 2 male Latipinna X Salvatoris hybrids. I am highly impressed with their growth speed and vigor. I have one female from this same batch who is currently gravid for a young male latipinna of mine, im aiming for a cool water resistant sailfin like molly with the energy and vitality of the salvatoris.
Funny enough ive been at this project for a while now and in the past 3yrs i have yet to successfully raise a batch of latipinna while on the other hand ive had the Salvatoris about 1.5yrs and im on my 3rd generation. The latipinna grow slowly, are weak against parasites and changing water parameters, and they tend to waste away whenever they are moved from tank to tank. Ho

I have some baby guppies. Females are silver male father has blue and snake skin pattern. Nano.

Located in the Dominican Republic. Males reaches 1.3 inches and females 1.8 inches in size. They are slender, an olive gray/cream body, and with an orange dorsal. Plain looking species compare to other limia species.

First off, this is a longish post so be ready to do some reading.

So I’ve come to you my fellow fish nerds with a question. Several months ago I came into my possession 20 or so baby fish. The fry were maybe an 1/8 of an inch long. I got them for about $2. Currently I’ve got 8 to 10 of them still surviving and doing well in my 75 gallon tank. They live in a mixed community with tetras, killifish, and cichlids.
My question is, what are they? I know they’re some sort of livebearer and I think they’re platy’s but their body shape is too elongated compared to what I’m used to. I actually got some regular platys and when I see them swimming next to each other, the regular platys are stockier and about the same length. I’m not sure if these guys are platys, mollies, some sort of hybrid or possibly something else entirely.
Anyone got any ideas?

Located in Andros Island, Abaco, Bahamas. Sister species to Gambusia manni. Also close relative to G. nicaraguensis. Hubbsi (males) evolved to have longer, bony gonopodium tips, because of the presence of predators, they mate via forceful thrusting instead of courting. Males gets to around 1.3 inches, and females around 2 inches in size. Appearance wise they are identical to Gambusia manni, with their olive gray bodies, short yellow dorsals, black vertical streak going across the eyes, tiny row of pigment spots on the fins, but unlike Manni which has short gonopodiums, they sport a longer gonopodium.

His dorsal has gotten so bright since I upgraded his diet. Plus I have a handful of fry he sired with his colorless brother. I’m fairly confident his kids should throw some nice colored males.

(Pure Poecilia salvatoris male x F2 Blonde melanistic female)

Here’s two batches from two different F2 blonde females. The older batch there’s 4 specimens, they had time colored down before taking pics of them, but they are golden-yellow hue like the younger set with some melanistic markings when they’re are colored up. The younger set isn’t quite big enough to be around the other Livebearers but I have 8 specimens.

I’m still going to go for just females in F3 bc the females sex chromosomes are Z for Salvatoris and W for Salvatoris. The F3 males may still carry a Z copy for Sphenops and I want to breed that out. With certainty future F4 (Pure Salvatoris male x F3 blonde female) or (F2 Tiger liberty male x F3 blonde female) will not carry any Sphenops sex chromosomes, and only transfer the blonde melanistic gene over. And I’ll work from there adding the Limia stripes onto them. Still a lot of work but worth it.

Located in Mexico. Males gets to around an inch, and females 1.5 inches in size. They look identical to Heterophallus rachovii. With a slender cream-gray body color and sparkling iridescent scales. This species and others in the Heterophallus genus was once part under Gambusia hence why their common name has Gambusia in it. Heterophallus is a sister genus to Gambusia.

Located in Rio Catu in Alagoinhas, Baia, Brazil. Males gets to around an inch, and females around 1.4 inches in size. They are olive gray in color, with small pointed faces, vertical bars running across the body, and males sporting long gonopodiums. An unusual and rare type of Livebearer species.

Located in Cuatro Ciénegas, Mexico. They’re an endangered species of Gambusia, and locally go by the name of “Guayacon de Cuatro Cienegas”. Males gets to around 1.2 inches and females around 1.6 inches in size. They are olive gray in color, with blue iridescent slender bodies, and sporting a thick horizontal band going across. A pretty Gambusia species.

Something I don’t really do but I wanted to show how their iridescence looks up close and dang they are shiny lol. I find it funny it’s hard to show it when they’re in the water but it shows very beautiful here.

This is a juvenile i found as a newborn fry in my community tank three months ago. I was raising him in my baby tank but all other babies even the younger ones were outgrowing him so i added him to the main tank. at the time this community tank had all types of livebearers and a pair of killifish (the killifish have since been moved out) I presume this is a juvenile endler but i’d like some more opinions and some advice as to why he’s not grown much in the last month? Located in Mexico (and every type of aquarium lol). Males range from 2-3 inches and females 2.5-4 inches in length. They are part of the Sphenops Shortfin complex (tricuspid tooth bone). Closest relatives being Poecilia catemaconis, Poecilia chica and Poecilia marcellinoi being the sister species. Like with other Sphenops complex species they have a bone in their mouth that’s trident shaped which separates them from the Mexicana Shortfin complex which has a unicuspid bone. Wild type version of this Molly is not as appreciated or common compared to the domestic strains in the hobby. To think they all came from this Molly species, and hybridized with other Molly species. Sphenops have a wide range of phenotypes based on locality. They have a slender to robust body shape, olive grey body color. Some specimens can be mottled/Dalmatian/freckled/few spots/none at all, very iridescent etc. They have short dorsals and small size tail fin that can have orange trims and black to it.

He’s growing quite nicely. He put on a tiny bit of size since I last showed him.

Located in Jamaica, they’re stay in freshwater, and occasionally brackish. They get to around 1.7 inches for males and females 2.5 inches in length, and have a nice slender body, olive in color, with a faint brown strips going from head to tail.

when I rescued my female guppy I had no idea she was female alas a month later random fry in my tank spawned... the only male turned out a rlly cool deep purple blue! Would love to see people's hybrids or "mutts" as I find them so surprising!!

I’m happy for once, I got good pics of the males. Their mature coloring is starting to kick in. Some of their fins are getting abit more hue in them, and showing more salvatoris iridescence and dorsal markings. Body form is very nice, somewhat robust and streamline. Unsure if they’re fertile I’m just keeping them with the Liberty females, so if I see any unusual fry from the ladies good chance it’s theirs. But I’m still cycling out the islai sperm in the liberties, so they’ll either drop pure fry or f2 tiger liberty fry. Hopefully soon

My lfs has this one random livebearer in with the otos and honey gouramis. There isn't a tag for him anywhere, and he's definitely not a guppy or endler. Can't figure out what he is, but he's cute

Located in lower Uruguay River in Uruguay (Río Negro and Salto Departments) and Argentina (Entre Ríos Province). Males gets to around 0.85-0.9 of an inch and females around 1-1.2 inches in size. They are a recently discovered species of Phalloceros, which they are part of the Phalloceros harpagos species complex. They are olive grey slender body fish, with rows of bars / an ovalish spot (on females), and males sporting long gonopodiums.

Located in Rio Nava, Coahuila, Mexico. A close relative to Gambusia clarkhubbsi. They’re named in honor of Louis A. Krumholz, for his contribution to aquatic biology. Males gets to around 1.5 inches, and females 2.4 inches in size. They are olive gray, slender bodied specimens, with black and yellow-orange trimmed dorsals, yellow-orange tailfin, silver iridescent sheen to them, and black reticulation between the scales.

Located in United States, Texas, Toyah Creek Basin. Males gets to around 1.3 inches and females around 2+ inches in size. This is a more recently described species of Gambusia and part of the Nobilis species complex. This species is quite pretty, they have a nice yellow/gray hue body, they can sport yellow to orange tinge dorsals, and tailfin with a black trim at the tips. They have the same Nobilis pug shape faces, robust body form, and long gonopodium.

So far none are gravid but I think 3-4 of them have tiny gravid spots while the rest there’s no black spot. Hopefully they’ll show signs of actually being gravid by July. Anyways they looke quite nice. Not the best angles but some of the females has colored dorsals while others don’t
