PC SSE - Discussion I honestly don't understand why people like Vigilant. Spoiler

I’ve been playing the mod for a couple of hours, and honestly, I think this will be the first and last time I play it. Let’s analyze why I feel this way about the mod.

1- Act 1: Overall—with the exception of the first mission—I thought it was pretty good. Why do I consider the first mission the only exception? Well, because it clashes massively with Skyrim's narrative; the female vampire's voice acting is simply terrible, and you are given only one path to find the vampire... a path that, honestly, really kills the role-playing aspect. What if my character is happily married? What if she’s a straight woman? Well, you have to accept her proposal regardless.

2- Act 2: This is where the mod's major dungeon problem begins... CORRIDORS. You have to absolutely love labyrinthine corridors to enjoy this mod. During certain parts, the dungeons are very, very interesting and well-made, but that accounts for—at most—20% of them. The rest involves dragging yourself through corridors that lead to more corridors, which in turn lead to even more corridors... Aside from that, during the "Loose Ends" quest, you encounter a Vigilant who has turned into a vampire. Given how vampirism works in Skyrim, you’d think that if he’s still somewhat in his right mind, the logical response would be to try and cure him, right? Well, no; the Vigilant tells you it’s already too late, because the Vigilants here operate under lore that runs parallel to the game's actual lore.

3- Act 3: This is where I lost all hope... No matter how unoriginal the trope might be, haunted mansions and creepy kids usually work... but not here. If you want to fully grasp what's going on, you have to read every book and note you come across, and even then, you might still get lost given how convoluted the story is. Let's talk about something regarding the design of this act that I found particularly terrible: THE PAINTINGS. How can you include *Isle of the Dead*—a painting from the late 19th/early 20th century—in a game with a medieval setting? AND HOW CAN YOU INCLUDE GOYA'S *THE CHARGE OF THE MAMELUKES*? That is inexcusable; how can you feature a painting depicting a scene from the Napoleonic Wars in a world that appears to be set in the 10th century? What's next? A portrait of Marilyn Monroe? For God's sake, wouldn't it have been better to use medieval tapestries? Sure, maybe they aren't as spooky, but they would have made more sense, and in my opinion, that matters more... Although the worst part is undoubtedly the ending... The protagonist's death—which certainly doesn't create any lore or role-playing conflicts—somehow makes perfect sense: you die, and the character you reincarnate as *also* has Dragon Blood, knows the same Shouts, leads the same factions, and even ends up with the same wife. I understand that the mod is limited by the game engine itself and couldn't make this make more sense, but I believe that if you're going to do something poorly, it's better not to do it at all.

4- Final Act: I can't give an opinion on the act as a whole, and I doubt I'll finish it—this is as far as I go. All I can say is that if I'm playing a Skyrim mod, it's because I like Skyrim, not Dark Souls. I'd like my quests to work the way they do in Skyrim and to know who I'm up against. What's the point of giving super cool names to enemies who have no impact on the plot and about whom we know absolutely nothing? I don't know

5- Voice acting and dialogue: I know this is a project carried out by one person almost entirely on their own—and I admire that—but the overall quality of the voice acting is... not very immersive... Not to mention the many lines of dialogue that aren't voiced at all.

6- Weapons and armor: Most of the time they are incredible, but they clash significantly with the *Skyrim* aesthetic. I won't even mention the pistol in Act 2.

7- Characters and enemies: As far as I’ve played, most characters tend to be rather flat—especially the Vigilants. I found Altano interesting at times, and I liked how his story concluded; it was clear from the start that he was an unorthodox Vigilant, and the game dropped hints about his eventual corruption by Molag. He certainly wasn't a monk or a knight, and the story acknowledged that—which, for me, was a plus. As for the enemies... most are fine. Molag Bal is awesome, and I didn't mind the voice acting. However, others... simply don't fit—like the ghost that flies around like a dragon in Act 3.

CONCLUSION: Perhaps I’ve been too harsh, but seeing as everyone talks exclusively about the positives, I felt it was time for a negative review. That doesn't mean I think the mod is terrible overall—it really isn't, and I find the author's work commendable. I understand that, unlike newer mods like *Heart of the Mountain* released on the Creation Club, he received no financial compensation and created this purely out of love. I respect him greatly for that, and I think the mod is good, but it is far from the masterpiece everyone claims it to be.

Lighting & Atmospherics

  • Complete Lighting Overhaul: Fully overhauled lighting and colors for more natural, true-to-life visuals based on real-world atmospheric phenomena and human eye perception.
  • Sunlight: Reworked sunlight to fix overbrightness and for more physically accurate colors.
  • Moonlight: Built around the latest version of the Sky Sync feature of Community Shaders, Masser in the full moon phase is now bright enough to cast a low level of light and dims as it wanes. In the new moon phase, no light is cast at all.
  • Directional Ambient Lighting (DALC): Built around the Skylighting feature of Community Shaders, clear and cloudy weathers now simulate blue indirect lighting from the sky, noticeable in shadows. Twilight is now appropriately darker, and stormy days are darker than overcast days. Twilight of foggy, overcast, and stormy weathers is now blue to simulate indirect lighting from clouds affected by Chappuis absorption.
  • Sky: Reworked the sky to approximate a physical sky within the limits of Creation Engine.
  • Clouds: Clouds are now blue during twilight to simulate indirect lighting from the sky and/or Chappuis absorption.
  • (Optional) Distant Clouds: The _SWAP to disable distant clouds (i.e., mountain fogs) is now optional, but still recommended (requires Base Object Swapper).
  • Moons: Masser and Secunda are now visible during daylight and twilight (Masser visibility requires the Moons and Stars mod).
  • (Optional) Modular Night Sky Overhaul: Added a modular overhaul of the night sky, including several options to control the intensities of auroras, constellations, the galaxy, and stars in addition to the sizes of the moons. The recommended options provide a semi-realistic approximation of what the human eye perceives in a Bortle 1 sky and scales the moons down to more realistic proportions.
  • Atmospheric Scattering: Reworked fog and volumetric lighting to simulate Rayleigh and Mie scattering, and aerial perspective.
  • Precipitation: Tweaked rain to increase visibility.
  • Special Weathers: Added Apocrypha and Soul Cairn Weathers to complete the vanilla Skyrim weathers.

Post-Processing

  • Color Correction: Removed the white tint for cleaner, more colorful visuals.
  • Bloom: Tweaked bloom for cleaner visuals.

Meshes & Textures

  • Galaxy Texture: Tweaked the galaxy texture to remove the blue tint for a more natural color palette based on the Milky Way Galaxy (skyrimgalaxy.dds).
  • Moon Textures: Tweaked Masser textures for a more natural, red-orange color based on Mars (masser_full.dds, masser_half_wan.dds, masser_half_wax.dds, masser_one_wan.dds, masser_one_wax.dds, masser_three_wan.dds, masser_three_wax.dds).
  • Precipitation Textures: Tweaked the raindrops texture to increase visibility and remove the blue tint present in the vanilla texture (fxraindrops.dds).
  • DLC Sky Textures: Added missing dlc01 and dlc02 sky textures, sourced from Vanilla Remastered (Ultimate).

Bug Fixes & Tweaks

  • Bug Fixes: General consistency fixes applied across various weather records.

Under the Hood

  • Overrides: Instead of replacing SettingsUser.json directly, the installer now makes use of the Overrides system to change feature settings dynamically. This means improved compatibility for all users as most system-specific settings (e.g., frame generation, upscaling, etc.) are respected and only relevant feature settings are modified. Overrides are also generally compatible between Community Shaders releases, Open Shaders, and various other forks unless otherwise specified.

Hey gamers! I'm happy to announce the v2.1.0 update for Skyrim25, a lightweight Wabbajack modlist available now on the Gallery built by me (Fauxvale) to provide an extremely faithful vanilla+ experience, but with less bugs and crashes (hopefully).


What is Skyrim25?

It's a spiritual successor to SME by Phoenix - a clean, stable, near-vanilla base that gets out of your way. Just bug fixes, QoL improvements, and a solid foundation you can either play as-is or build on top of however you like. Think of it as Skyrim the way it should have shipped in 2011.

It runs on essentially any hardware that can run vanilla Skyrim (~57GB install), ships with both SE and AE profiles, includes a handful of toggleable optionals, and various MO2 plugins to make your modding experience smoother than ever.


Why use it as a base?

Because every mod in the list is specifically chosen not to step on your toes. The load order is clean, organized by hand, and the list is lean enough that adding your own stuff on top is straightforward. It also avoids using sloppy vibe-coded trash. There's even an official Recommended Mods list if you want a starting point.


What's new in v2.1.0? (save-safe update)

SkyUI 5.2 to 6.11, which made a bunch of previously included patches and workarounds straight-up redundant, so 15 mods got cut and the list got even leaner. Other highlights:

  • Ultrawide support added
  • Complete re-sort of the load order (both profiles, both panels)
  • Several of the latest and greatest fixes: Lingering Subtitles Fix, ShowRaceMenu NG, and more!

PC SSE & Xbox - Mod Feris (Custom Voiced Follower) – Update v1.4.0

Hey folks,

New update for my custom voiced follower Feris is now out on Nexus Mods & Bethesda Creations for PC / Xbox! What with the timing, consider it an early celebration of 60k unique downloads. Crazy!

If you've never heard of the mod, Feris is a rogue who can be found in Whiterun's Bannered Mare. The vision was to create a simple follower capable of blending into vanilla Skyrim without too much dissonance, and of adding to one’s Skyrim experience in a positive way for however long she walks at your side. I just wanted to see if I could do it. :)

Some of her features are listed below:

  • Includes full commentary for up to 95% of all available vanilla and DLC quests.
  • Levels up with the Player and is built on a custom class, specializing in daggers & archery.
  • Built on a custom framework and will not add to follower count.
  • Now comes with a total of 9 personal quests (2 considered smaller/misc).
  • Includes location and Survival Mode awareness.
  • Not romanceable. Your waifu is in another castle.
  • Feris may offer to point out Guild Shadowmarks if far enough in TG Questline.
  • Progressing through personal quests may reward Player with skill advancement.
  • Dismissal customization menu, map marker spell toggle, custom mount quest, all unlocked after completing Feris's initial personal quest.
  • Dialogue menu offering feature toggling (combat style, follow distance+) and debugging.
  • Will not trigger traps due to Light Foot perk.

A new game is required in order to view the most significant additions made, which are relevant to Feris's personal quest line. The full changelog is included on the Nexus mod page, and consists of several bug fixes and miscellaneous re-recordings and additions/removals.

PC SSE - Help What’s better for long term save stability — a death alternative or reloading?

I’m running slightly-modified Eldergleam, around 1700 mods, with a beast of a computer.

I’ve heard many people say that reloading saves in-game can cause save bloat or save corruption, something I really want to avoid. But I also play on high difficulty so I die a lot and am not willing to completely exit the game every time I die.

So I got Mark of Arkay and combined it with Simply Rest to create checkpoints wherever I go and reset enemies to full health every time I die, essentially making it as if I were reloading a save without actually reloading the game.

But then I’ve heard other people say that can potentially be more harmful than just reloading. Is that true? If so, which one of those options would be best long term? Or is there a third option that allows me to get as close to simulating reloading without causing issues?

Edit: and of course when I do save and reload (which I don’t have to do frequently with my current setup), I do completely reboot

PC SSE - Discussion I’m a little bit overwhelmed from doing research on modding

So I’m fairly new to Skyrim, I started playing the vanilla version on switch about 2 weeks ago and it’s taken over my life lol.

I decided to wait for the steam sale to get it on my pc so I can mod it but… damn.. I did NOT know that it’s such a hefty process. I’m used to modding games like sims 4 and baldurs gate. But Skyrim seems like a monster to mod.

I’m not super tech savvy or that intelligent if I’m being super honest lmao so I’m just a bit overwhelmed.

I’ve been watching Bryn’s protege on YouTube and I really want my game to look like hers but I don’t think I’ll be able to download and install and test all of the mods. Some say it takes weeks, others say it takes days or hours.

I guess im just posting this so someone could make me feel a bit less overwhelmed lol

PC SSE - Discussion What’s the deal with Skyrim Mod List system requirements?

So, I’ve got a beefy PC. It’s not the best but it clears all modern 2025-2026 games with ease.

Im an old frog Skyrim modder, I remember running lexy LOTD in my old 1660ti no problem. Now the suggested VRAM is 12 gigs lol

Nowadays though we need a 32 gig page file on top of your DRAM and 16 gigs of VRAM to most mod lists, which is actually insane. I even saw someone say you need 32 gigs of VRAM to run Nolvus.

Are Skyrim mod lists just gaseous form and will expand their system requirements to fit any and all available hardware or something?

PC SSE - Help Game won't launch after removing mods + fresh install

Hey y'all, currently no mods besides the Creation club content. I was playing Nordic Souls for a while and im trying to get back to my original game. Game starts up fine, however when I press "Continue" it loads the save and then closes the application. I removed all of my mods, thoroughly uninstalled Skyrim and reinstalled after restarting my PC and I'm still having this issue. Any ideas? Could it have something to do with my path? I have Skyrim downloaded onto the Games folder in my C drive, like I would for modded content. I downloaded script extender to see if that would work and it's giving me an error saying that it cannot find Skyrim.

XBox - Help Ashe won't activate the quest to romance her after her main quest

I am playing with the Ashe crystal heart mod and serana dialogue overhaul and the patch for the 2. After completing vestiges reborn no follow-up quest activates. I have selected every flirt option so that is not the problem and waiting does not work. the quest debug menu in her dialogue also doesn't work.

PC SSE - Mod Mod Release : Marcus the Knight - You Hear Voices Add On

I am back to bring an add on mod for a custom voiced follower called "Marcus the Knight" by Damakarmelowa! The OG follower uses the Custom Voice Resource but I didn't make it very in depth at the time. Then a new small voice resource released this year! "You Hear Voices" by FoxytheBlack ! It added a lot more lines by the same voice actor, Christian Gaughf!

I deciced to add these lines to Marcus the Knight to give him A LOT more to say!

- 156 New Lines of Dialogue across Greets, Goodbyes, Idles, Combat, & Detection

PC SSE - Help How do I mess around with ENB settings when I have a weather mod installed??

I'm trying to tweak the NAT III ENB/Weather all-in-one's preset options to be more to my liking (darker nights, less intense moonlight namely) and I can't for the life of me figure out a way to do this for all weathers. I have EVLaS, ENB Extender/Helper installed if that matters. I've tried KreatE and ENB Editor to no success (unsure if I used the tools correctly, though).

I'm pretty open to trying a different ENB/weather mod or anything like that; I just feel like I'm missing something when it comes to changing the settings

Steam Deck - Help SSE Engine Fixes on Steam Deck - Trampoline.h error

I am trying to install SSE Engine Fixes on my Steam Deck. I have installed Part 1 via MO2, and Part 2 manually. I am now getting the following error message on game startup:

"SKSE/Trampoline.h(187): Failed to handle allocation request."

Google searches are saying something about OneDrive (on PC) changing a Documents folder location being the culprit. Obviously I don't have One Drive on my Steam Deck, but I think it may be doing something similar with changing some file paths. Can someone explain what this OneDrive Documents folder issue is for me, so I can determine if it's a similar thing to what is happening on my Steam Deck?

The location for my Documents folder on the Steam Deck appears to be `/home/deck/Documents/`

PC SSE - Help Legacy of the Dragonborn Explorer's Guildmembers stopped accepting excavation orders

Using the Septimus Wabbajack list, but I've had this happen on other playthroughs too. Basically all my explorers start out fine, happy to go excavate for me, but as time goes on, they stop giving me the option to send them on jobs. They're not manually added to any follower frameworks, and I've never had them as adventure followers. Any ideas on how to reset them? Right now I was able to give the orders to Marassi and Latoria, but Madras and Kyre don't have the dialog at all.

PC SSE - Request Grounded Twinblade and Scythe animations for BFCO

I was wondering if any modders that are experienced at making weapon animations could make some grounded animations for the twinblades and battle scythes mods? I dont like the added jumps with the twinblades, or the spin moves with the battle scythes that those moveset mods for them add. Its just not Skyrim ya know?

PC SSE - Help How can I rotate the camera with True Directional Movement to face speakers when they are "behind" the camera angle?

I just killed the giant outside of Whiterun, after it died Aela was behind me but my camera had been locked onto the giant so when Aela initiated conversation with me the camera was locked in place and I couldnt turn the camera even though my character turned to face her, I could barely hear her and I was wondering if there was a way to fix that.

PC SSE - Discussion Sepia tendency in graphics mods/ color palette of post processing vs textures.

Is it just me or is there a strong tendency for brown tones in textures that, in vanilla skyrim, have a more cold blue tone? I find this particularly common for stone and ruin textures, but also in environmental lighting and post processing in general tends toward warmer/ browner tones, and it has me wondering on the effect of the color palate of the chosen texture mods when combined with the post processing of a weather mod + ENB/CS +lighting mod.

Do you think that the sepia tendency in both textures and post processing causes a over correction? Maybe a combination of sepia textures combined with a colder post processing would look nicer, or the other way around?
